This heater is very nice for the "draftier," colder room(s) that your central heating system can't reach. It also assures that heat, at the right temperature, is in the room when your central heater system's thermostat is in the hallway!
Consumer reports gives it high ratings and rightfully so; it is a simple, easy to use heater that is very quiet when it is on NON-FAN mode. Other space heaters with temperature settings only have a fan or electrical noise when they start up and stay on; this can wake you (or the baby/kids) up at night. This heater doesn't have that rude awakening "turn-on-and-start-the-heat-up" noise when your temperature drops below a certain point; it just releases the heat slowly. If you're a light sleeper, this heater is kind to your ears.
Like other space heaters, it has a quick heat FAN mode that can rapidly expel heat. Some owners may say that the fan is noisy, but it's relatively more quiet than the previous space heaters with fans that I've used in the past. Unlike those other heaters, the HZ-817's FANLESS mode starts heat slowly and keeps a nice warmth around itself and the room. When your desired temperature preset is reached, it then provides a "trickle" of heat to hold that temperature.
It is an intelligently designed product, and I also like the automatic shut off if the unit is accidentally tipped over.
A suggestion for improvement: more range in the knob's temperature settings. For example, instead of going from 65F to 70F to 75F, it would be nice to have in between settings such as 67.5F and 72.5F options as well.

On December 12th 2010 I ordered a Honeywell HZ-817 Baseboard heater. I'd read the reviews posted on Amazon and also checked with Consumer Reports who gave it a high rating. It arrived about 10 days later. We set it up in our 11' x 11' bedroom and it worked great. It provided a constant heat (we like it about 62 to 64 degrees) and without the fan it was completely silent. That lasted about a month. Then it stopped working. I tried calling customer service but the wait was too long so I sent an email instead. I received a reply a couple of days later at first offering to have me ship it to Massachusetts (I live in Maine)for an exchange. A subsequent email alerted me to the fact that they didn't have any more of those models in stock and didn't know when they would. Because of the time of year she offered to ship me a lesser model, the HZ-617 without the Energy Saver mode, and waive the shipping fees. I declined the offer and will ship it to the Memphis warehouse with a 4 to 6 week process time. When it worked, it worked well. But if it breaks you'll pay shipping costs both ways. I don't know at this point if they have parts available to make the repairs.

We purchased this heater after reading a Boston Sunday Globe review. The Globe tested Eden Pure and several other heaters and gave the Honeywell HZ817 five stars. We turn the oil heat down in the main part of our large house and use the heater in our family room...Works like a charm!!! We love the fast Convection Heat feature and also give this heater five stars*****.Honest reviews on Honeywell EnergySmart Baseboard Heater, HZ-817
This works great. I live in California where the temperature's great most of the time, but in the winter gets down into the 40s at night and my place doesn't have heat, so I picked up this heater. It heats up my bedroom to a comfortable temperature within 15-30 minutes if I keep the door closed. It's silent when the fan's not on, and creates only a very faint whir when it is on (Quick Heat Mode.) Quick Heat Mode is nice to have but I rarely use it since my small room (about 10 x 12) doesn't take long to heat up.My only complaint with this heater is a minor one and is possibly due to my obsessive compulsiveness. Honeywell calls it a baseboard heater, which implies that it should be placed near the wall at the baseboard. The instructions, however, say that it should be placed 3 feet away from anything for safety. I realize this may just be the company being overly cautious and covering themselves in case of lawsuits, but I'm now hesitant to place it too close to furniture or the walls, which in a small room is a hassle. May not be necessary though.
Overall, I'm very happy with this heater and would recommend it to others.
