My wife and I are very pleased with the heater. The pedestal allows it be off the floor so it works much better for the bedrooms where the floor heaters just toast the bed cover. And the oscillating feature is very handy to spread the heat throughout the room. Its more expensive then the floor models but for bedrooms and other limited floor space areas, its terrific. Silent when not oscillating and practically silent when it is going.

I've been using Optimus heaters for several years, and they are by far superior to space heaters. I used to use regular space heaters before but always had problems with the fans going out in them, so I decided to try radiant heat and haven't looked back. I have an Optimus H-4500 now and absolutely LOVE it. This heater easily warms up my 250 square foot family room in just a few minutes and it puts out heat almost instantly after you turn it on. I really like the digital display, timer, and the remote that this model offers. The metal grate on the front also doesn't get hot, so it is safe to touch and kid/pet friendly. It also has a safety feature with an automatic shut off in case it is knocked over. I recommend them to everyone!

Really happy with my new dish heater. Silent when running, except in the beginning when I started using it, I heard some subtle clicking noises, but now they seem to be gone.

It has the thermostat and the timer, so it is smart. Will auto stop heating when the temperature reach at certain point, but will turn off when the timer is gone. This feature is good if you want to go to sleep without any worries.

The remote is awesome too so I can control it from my bed easily in the morning before I get up from the bed.

My room is not very big but it is heated really good.

The only con, is that it doesn't holds the heat for very long, so in case your room gets colder quickly, this product needs to run more often, which will consume more energy.

Honest reviews on Optimus H-4500 14-Inch Oscillating Pedestal Digital Dish Heater

Well first off, the heating aspect of this heater does do its job. I've owned this product for almost a year now, and it does heat the room. The problem is the Oscillator is very weak. Sometimes it gets stuck and just clicks constantly without turning. Very cheaply built obviously but it does warm the room. I like the thermostat feature also. Would recommend if the oscillator worked more often, but to me it just seems cheaply made.

Just right for keeping a room warm and toasty. Use it in the garage during cold nights to keep it warm and toasty.

This thermostat was pretty easy to install. The only problem is that this one only has two wires to connect while the old one had more. So it did take some research to determine the specific connections. Basically, all white wires together, all red together, and all ground wires together. As for the black wires, the hot wire goes to one of the two thermostat wires. The remaining black wire(s) is connected to the second thermostat wire. Note that either of the two thermostat wires can be connected to the hot wire. This thermostat's best feature is that, unlike mechanical ones, it doesn't simply blast heat at high temperatures once the room cools off. Instead, it has a much smaller temperature variance range and will put out warm air gradually to maintain a much more comfortable environment. The unit is new so it has only been used occasionally so far.

The Broil King Double Buffet Server did all that was expected. It kept a paella and meatballs hot all during a five hour party. The only slight dissapointment was the quality of the stainless steel inserts. They were not as heavy duty as I thought they would be. They did clean up well, but scratched a little from the serving spoons. In general I was very happy with the product and look forward to using it again.

I had originally bought the Homewerks version of this one for $119. The network set up was no where as easy as this Honeywell. As a matter of fact I never got it to work. So I returned it. The Honeywell is very well thought out. It even has a function setting for hydronic systems. The set up leads you through a series of choices very deductively so the was no time wasted. Oh did I say I bought two? Yes and setup from beginning to end was about 1.5 hours. Be prepared though, you must have a ,VERY small screwdriver to hook up the wires. This was frustrating. I finally went out and bought an eyeglass repair kit because it has a screwdriver the right size. We'll at the moment they are both working. I'm monitoring 150 miles away! Love it.

This is the third line voltage digital thermostat we have had in one zone, It failed after a year and a half. It failed because of a bad relay.

The zone with three 4 foot baseboards is well under the rated wattage rating on the thermostat.

I think in general this was a good thermostat, seemed to be reasonably accurate, easy to program (with the instructions)and fairly quiet in operation. If you have one heater or a minimal load I expect this would work fine and would last much longer although other people have noted premature failures as well.

For higher wattage installations it just seems that the 30 amp Omron relay in this thing is not up to the task of dealing with the number of cycles at high wattage. Mine didnt show any thermal damage but upon taking it apart it seems like this really is a lighter duty product than its specs make it out to be. If I were to use one again I would consider using it to control a master relay to reduce the load.

The last thing: all of these electronic line voltage thermostats have no failsafe if something goes wrong with them. That means the slightest malfunction could leave you with no heat and frozen pipes. I would never consider using one of these for the primary heat in a location (cabin, summer home, etc)that is left unattended for prolonged periods. The fact remains in 30 years I have never seen a wall mount bimetallic thermostat fail. I have had 3 electronic ones fail in 4 years... In my case I replaced this with a standard bimetallic wall thermostat like the house was originally built with and called it a day.

We put one of these in each of our bedrooms, as we have baseboard heaters (also replaced with King ceramic baseboard heaters). This thermostat works great! It is keeping our bedrooms at the proper temperatures we programmed, and nice to have something so updated as to have digital instead of an old turn-knob thermostat. The backlight is great for a glow light in a kid's room at night too! You can turn off the backlight, as well as the heat itself, which will be great for summertime when we won't need them on.

We are very happy with this thermostat, highly recommend them for anyone with baseboard heaters. Also highly recommend the ceramic baseboard heaters they are much more efficient, and a better and more stable heat.

Shipping was super fast. Very flexible programming capability, but the initial programming can be a little tedious. Allows temporary temp changes without messing up the settings. Nice to be able to turn the backlight on/off. There's also a switch available to turn off the heat without messing up the settings.

Honest reviews on King ESP230-R Electronic Line-Voltage Programmable Thermostat, White

I had to look for replacement thermostats for my LUX units because they could not handle the amperage my heating system uses. This king thermostat can handle up to 22 amps. It has an on/off switch and has a back light. SO far I really like these units but it is not winter yet so only time will tell if they are a great thermostat but I have no reason to be concerned.

I replaced a Honeywell thermostat that was not the programmable type. The installation on this one was easy to follow. Programming gives you a lot of options but this also adds some to the complexity of programming. Once I figured it out, it wasn't too bad.

The main thing I wanted in a water cooler was to actually make the water cold. I did a lot of research and found that most of the popular ones only cooled water to around 50 degrees F and were not adjustable. All I can say is when I have any kind of drink, I'm the kind of person that fills the cup with ice first. This cooler is perfect for me. Makes ice cold water without needing to add ice to the glass and I don't even have it turned to the coldest setting. I don't use the hot water so I can't comment on that. Water flows quickly, especially more so the fuller the bottle is. For ice cold water, this one is perfect.

After reading reviews, I decided to go with the Clover B7A hot and cold water dispenser. However, I saw that this item came in black and had only 2 reviews (one 5 star and one 1 star) so the rating was kind of low. Let me go ahead and bring that star rating up a bit as this product is awesome. I was able to set it up in almost no time and it didn't leak, didn't taste like plastic and the cold was plenty cold and the hot was really hot!

I would recommend this water dispenser to everyone.

My dispenser arrived promptly and worked very well for the first month. During the first month the unit was quiet and you would not know it was in the kitchen. Since the the first month however the unit will make a noise once every hour or so as though it is re-heating or cooling the water. It lasts for about 60 seconds and then stops but it is a little annoying and makes me wonder if it a precursor to a bigger problem. The unit still works and appears to be sound in every other way.

I knew exactly what I was buying when I purchased the Sunheat earlier this year and it does the job well. I needed a large-room electric zone heater for a small (450 sq ft) finished area for my basement. I live in Maine (very cold winters), but my well-insulated basement temperature stays fairly constant year round. I tried a few smaller space heaters and electric baseboard units prior to the Sunheat, but I found they simply didn't heat the space evenly or quickly enough. The Sunheat heats the space very well -comfortable and quick. The noise from the fan isn't even that loud. I can have the unit on next to the couch while I watch TV and it is a non-factor.

Also, it is important to note I do not run the unit 24/7 nor do I rely on the on-board temperature gauge to regulate the heat in the room. Instead, I plug the Sunheat into a Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Outlet Thermostat Heating & Cooling Programmable Outlet Thermostat (which can be bought from Amazon for $30), and it basically turns my basement into a separate heat zone of the house. I can program when the heating unit comes and and what temp I want the room at based on when I use the space, just like I do on the other programmable thermostats in my house. I leave the Sunheat switched on and on the high temp setting, but it only comes on when my separate thermostat tells it to. A big reason that I bought a Sunheat 1500 is because it has a non-digital on-off switch, which is only thing that is compatible with this type of thermostat. The Duraflame (which is the top rated unit on Consumer Reports) and others will not work with a separate programmable thermostat because when they are plugged in, they require a person to actually turn them on by pushing a digital button. The Sunheat has a manual switch, which is exactly what I needed.

The rest of my house is on oil heat. I priced out adding a heating zone with forced hot water baseboards through my oil furnace in the basement, and installation alone was $1500-$1700, plus the cost of the oil heat. For around $275 I can accomplish the same with the Sunheat and outlet thermostat. I cannot say exactly how much my electric bill went up from using the Sunheat because it can be common for my bill to fluctuate $10-$20 each month yearround depending on other variables. I haven't seen an noticeable increase since I started using the Sunheat so that tells me it likely increases my electric bill around $10 monthly.

Again, I knew exactly what I needed when I bought the Sunheat and it does the job well.

I have tried many other heaters and this one is the cadillac of all heaters. Heater is rock solid and cranks out heat. It has a made in the USA wood case and is on wheels. The heater on off switch is located at the front top. Nothing on this heater gets hot.....very safe for pets and kids. 5 year warranty! A little more expensive then some heaters but worth every penny. Ignore the morons that claim all heaters are the same. I have had 1500 watt plastic junk heaters from walmart.....huge difference! A strong wind will blow the cheapies over or can get knocked over by a pet......Sunheat would take a hurricane to topple it.

You pay a lot more for a Mercedes then you do a Yugo for a reason.....I wonder if the same morons think the Mercedes is just the same as a Yugo and not worth the extra dollars??!! Buy this heater......best on the market!

It's a great "lunchbox" if you adapt your menu to it.

First the description

The lunchbox is a Thermos Jar with a non-insulated plastic top. There are four containers that fit into the jar in a specific order.

-The bottom container is a insulated bowl. It has a gasket sealed screw on top, insulated side walls and a small vent for pressure. The most insulative of the bunch it is designed for soup or other liquids

-The next container is the biggest. It has a slide and lock insulated top.

-The third container is notably smaller and has a Tupperware like pop top.

-The fourth container is smaller yet and has the same top.

You stack the containers in the jar and then clip the top on with little side clips. The whole thing then goes in a nice nylon carry bag that also has a pair of chopsticks in a narrow plastic box. There are little pockets on the side for extra sauce packets or condiments (or I-pod video's to watch while your eating lunch).

This unit is optimally designed for the Japanese style lunch. A soup, Rice, entrée and pickled/salted vegetables. Normally you'd put your soup in the bottom container, fill the middle container up with rice. Your entrée would go in the third and the veggies in the fourth. Since the soup and the rice container both have insulated tops they stay warm. The other containers are not insulated and neither is the top. This allows some heat coming off the bottom two containers to escape so that your veggies are at room temperature. Understanding this is important. Its not supposed to keep the entire meal at the same temperature. Its supposed to keep one part hot and the other part at room temperature.

I've found that in real use the soup container stays steaming hot. The stuff in the rice container stays warm (but not hot) the stuff in the top two containers heats up to room temperature, maybe a little bit more.

Naturally you don't have to use it as designed (soup/rice/entrée/veggie) but departures require a little bit adaptation and creativity. You need to balance both amounts and what you want to keep the hottest vs coolest. Also if you have access to a microwave at lunch it kind of makes this not quite as useful since you could just heat your food up there (as opposed to heating it up in the morning before you go). You could use the whole thing as a cooler (everything remains cold/cool till you heat up what you want). That might be a better way to go if your using it for the office.

The size of the room temperature containers is not large enough to handle American sized sandwiches and breads, so if your looking to take that traditional lunch box stuff this isn't the best unit for that.

If your looking to make the most of this unit you might check out some Bento Box cookbooks. They give receipies and menu sets more in line with what this is designed to handle. In particular I enjoyed the book "Bento Boxes" by Naomi Kijima

Bento Boxes: Japanese Meals on the Go

I'll cook something up out of that and thrown in a packet of instant miso soup for a Japanese style lunch.

Pros-

Compact and efficient use of spaceIt all goes in the tube, no bag full of different containers

Allows for two temperatures in the same container Allows for flexible combinations

Lots of interesting comments from your co-workers

Cons-

Cleanup is a bit of a pain Not dishwasher safe. The soup top is a little tricky at times.

Soft plastic will eventually pick up strong smells/Stains

Two temperatures in the same container Requires a little creativity, doesn't keep everything uniformly hot/cold.

Conclusion-

As long as you understand how it works and adapt it's a great product. Might encourage you to cook a bit more healthy food and eat more vegetables.

I bought one of these not too long ago. I thought it was a little expensive,* but I can see that I will get many years of service from it.

The construction of all the components are very sturdy, and the container is very well insulated. The bag has an outside pocket that you can use to store a napkin (or teabags, as I do) and comes with a detachable shoulder strap and an attached short carrying strap. Inside the bag, along with the thermal container, is a utensil box that holds a pair of chopsticks. Everything is quality construction even the chopsticks, which have a textured surface on the business end of them making it easier for you to pick up food with them. Whoever designed this package gave it a lot of thought.

The bottom two containers are intended for holding rice and soup; the rice container has an insulated cap, allowing you can to store hot & cold items in the same container.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase and would recommend one of these to anyone who needs a lunchbox.

My only complaints (which are minor, but included here for the sake of completeness): the instructions are in Japanese (as if you needed them), and no western utensils (you can pack your own fork). But outside of that, it's a perfect product.

*Expensive? It paid for itself in 2 weeks after I bought it, I stopped eating fast food for lunch.

** It's been 2 years since I bought yet to show any sort of appreciable wear and tear. I love this thing!

*** It's now been about 5 years. Still using it, still in darn good shape.

*** It's now been about 10 years. Still using it. No appreciable wear.

The picture doesn't show that each bowl has a lid. The two smaller bowls have snap on tuperware type lids.

The rice bowl has a thick, insulated lid but it's not airtight. Instructions say to use it only for rice as other contents may spill.

The soup bowl has a twist on lid that has a valve on it. However, the instructions say not to microwave the bowls with the lids on, so I'm not sure why the valve is there.

You're not supposed to put the pieces in the dishwasher, nor put any food directly into the outer container.

My lunch jar came with both English and Japanese instructions.

Honest reviews on Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless Steel Lunch Jar

My daughter, a high school senior who agrees with her friends that the school lunches "suck," is sold on this. She wanted to lose a few pounds, which this has helped her do despite the fact that she now eats a higher volume of food during lunch.

How? She, like all her friends, used to skip lunch and leave school famished, scarfing down the first things she could get her hands on usually high fat, high calorie junk food. This lunch box has eliminated her after-school munchies, keeping her appetite in check all day long. For the first time, she can pack hot (or cold) nutritious lunches at 6:30am, and they are still piping hot (or ice cold) when she pulls it out of her locker at 11:30. Her friends, who good-naturedly mocked her "space capsule" lunch at first, now crowd around her during lunch with their tongues hanging out, jockeying in line for her scraps. One remarked: "Your lunch container is about the same size as my water bottle, but you've got, like, a 4-course gourmet meal in there."

She's lost 10 pounds in the 2 months since she started taking her lunch in the Zojirushi jar, has gained noteriety among peers for having the "best lunches ever," has become more good-natured and less surly (better nutrition), and dances in her seat during 4th period as she waits for the bell to signal lunch period, where she can spread out her containers before her envious yet admiring friends and hold court over her "gourmet surprise" meal, trying to decide what to eat first. By her own admission, she has more energy and better concentration in class and during studies (her grades are up, by the way). She admits it's a pain to have yet one more thing to carry around in addition to her backpack (not that it wouldn't fit, but the backpack is already stuffed tight with books), but swears the payoff makes it worth the minor trouble. As a parent, it tickles me to see this self-described "laziest person on earth" hunkered over the sink at nights, lovingly and painstakingly cleaning out every container and lid (no doubt thinking ahead to the delicious and wholesome treats it will contain tomorrow).

Such a good buy, I bought another Zojirushi model better suited for my 11-year-old daughter. My kids say they will never go back to school cafeteria lunches, and have become much more nutritionally aware and involved in meal preparation. While their friends waste half their lunch period standing in line for tasteless and overprocessed entrees laden with salt, refined sugar and carbs, my kids dine on veggie chili and hot cornbread w/butter, delicious main course salads with homemade dressing, pita sandwiches and hummus, and stir fried teriyaki veggies over whole grain rice. And that's just the bottom 2 containers! The top 2 containers are perfect for fruit, tortilla chips, nuts and/or healthy desserts, all items middle and high schoolers love to eat. I'm thrilled with the product, which is solidly constructed, and which works completely as advertisied, with even better results if you preheat or pre-cool containers for 5-10 mins. We replaced the chopsticks with a plastic cutlery set, which fits nicely upright in the cloth carrier, thanks to the stretch loop on the inside.

NOTE: Like the other reviewer, I too was mildly annoyed at the Japanese-only user documentation, but then called the company at their California office (800-733-6270) and they promptly mailed/faxed English instructions. Don't even get me started on the money this saves by eliminating costly meals out and packaged foods. Excellent, excellent buy that has already paid for itself tenfold.

We purchased the Bento box, based on the good reviews on Amazon, and initially had a good experience with it. The concept is obviously sound (with centuries of testing!), although we were concerned by the apparent flimsy security of the insulated tub "rings" on one container (the little rubber inserts for insulation). The center "plug" fell out after a few weeks use, and would not stay securely inserted thereafter. We called the manufacturer, and were curtly advised that there was NO WARRANTY on the product whatsoever! We were invited to purchase replacement plugs for nearly $3 each, plus $3 shipping, which we did, begrudgingly. We filled out a customer service feedback form online, hoping that perhaps the lack of service provided by phone was an anomaly (It's not so much the additional expenditure that bothers me, as the company's complete unwillingness to stand behind their product. That's disconcerting, to say the least).

UPDATE: The company just called and threatened legal action based on the above review...!? Way to go, customer service! I am leaving 2 stars for the product, but the company behind it gets zero stars. Purchase at your own peril, and in the knowledge that you are paying mor ethan $40 for something that will likely break, and has no warranty for anything but the large outer casing.

I have both the Honeywell RTH7600D (bought at Costco for around $65 and packaged there as model RCT8101A) and this Honeywell RTH8500D. Both units are very good with the one major difference being the "Vacation Hold" feature; the 8500 has it and the 7600/Costco version does not. The programming interface is different as well, however, one is not necessarily better than the other. The 7600 unit is a little easier to program whereas the 8500 offers a shortcut that allows multiple days to be programmed at once. Since you'll likely program the unit infrequently, I don't think this should necessarily be a consideration unless you are an installer of these units where time is money; then the 8500 is the unit of choice.

The Costco version for me is going back because it lacks the Vacation Hold feature. If you travel or not at home frequently, the Vacation Hold feature allows you to hold the temperature, say, at 50 degrees for 10 days while you take off for a ski trip. With this feature, once the timed Vacation Hold is over, the thermostat resumes it's normal programming schedule. So, when you arrive home, the house temperature is at a comfortable level.

The Costco version allows you to manually override the program schedule, however, you must manually remove the override as well. Therefore, when you arrive home from your ski trip, you come home to a cold house and you'll need to manually reset the thermostat and wait for the house to warm up. If this is not an important feature for you or you're are at home most of the time, go for the Costco version and save about $40.

Otherwise, the RTH8500D is an excellent unit that has worked quite well for me over the past several years.

UPDATE: We recently (May 2011) installed the RTH8500D in our bedroom. The "click" of the relay contact when the thermostat calls for activation annoys my wife who has rather sensitive hearing. I contacted Honeywell and they said the clicking sound is unavoidable at the current time and suggested insulating the back plate of the RTH8500D with 1/8" Styrofoam to deaden the relay sound. I temporarily tried a thick folded piece of clothing material and I didn't notice any difference. After reading other Honeywell thermostat reviews, the clicking sound seems to be universal across many of their thermostats. So, if considering a bedroom application, you may want test the unit to ensure it's within an acceptable noise level .

I had trouble finding programable thermostats that would control my split system Carrier heat pump. Honeywell has the installation manuals for every one of their units online ( I spent time looking at this unit's documentation to be sure it could handle my Carrier unit. Be careful, many Honeywell and other manufacturers have units that don't handle heat pumps, and some include "call a professional" in their instructions. Setup was a cinch and the ability to program temps for four times per day for up to seven days will save me money throughout the year. It's a simple unit, seems compatible with most systems, has some neat features like "vacation hold" where you can override all the programming and set a temperature to "hold" until you reset it for programming. You could be away for an evening or a month...it would honor the "hold" setting.

There are a couple of "if this...then that" instructions, but they're really well put. I did notice a poor rating on one of Honeywell's other thermostats because one purchaser didn't realize the difference between possibilities linked with "AND" vs. "OR". "And" means EACH MUST EXIST, "Or" means ONLY ONE OF THEM SHOULD EXIST. So, although the instructions are excellent, they must be read carefully before using the unit on a more complex system, such as a heat pump.

Only thing I'm not too happy about is the very short time the backlight stays on...barely five seconds. Unfortunately, in my house, the unit is mounted in an area with little natural or ambient light. I'm sure once the screen is totally familiar to me this won't matter much. But, learning the system and setting the various "System settings" takes reading along with the Installation Guide and the screen is constantly going black. Maybe I just haven't found the setting that lets it stay on longer...

I'm not experienced with HVAC. I'm a 62 year old woman/avid home "improver" and installing this in place of the 25 year old mechanical mercury stat was very easy...maybe 30 minutes.

I wanted a touchscreen thermostat that accepted power from the furnace system so I didn't need to replace batteries every year. (It will run off of batteries if your system does not provide 24vac power to the thermostat; many were not originally installed to do so.)

This model has practically every feature you could want in a standard thermostat. It's easy to install with a bit of careful reading and looks great on the wall. I like that you can set a temperature range (disabled by default; must set an advanced option to enable) and the unit will automatically switch between heat and cool to maintain the set range.

Each of the 7 days of the week is individually programmable with up to 4 events (wake, leave, return, sleep). It offers advanced hold modes: 1) hold override temperature until next program event; 2) hold override permanently until canceled; 3) "vacation hold" for a number of days before automatically resuming the normal program.

Another advanced feature is the "recovery" mode, where the unit learns how long it takes to heat/cool the living space and it can turn on the heater or air conditioner early so that it reaches the set temperature at the set time. Cheaper thermostats only turn on *at* the set time and then the temperature has to catch up to the program. This unit can anticipate your needs, so if you want it to be 75 degrees when you wake up at 7:35, set the wake-up event to 75 degrees at 7:35. It takes care of the rest.

Highly recommended! I have three of these in my home, one for each zone.

I replaced a 20 year old thermostat with this model. I have a simple gas heat / air conditioner. It took me longer to find he scissors to open the box than it took to actually install. I love that is actually comes pre-programmed with suggested times and temps. In fact, I left the Monday Friday settings as it. I did however purchase the oops-plate for this unit since the older one was larger than this one. Excellent product.... quite happy.

I have a bunch of these installed in my rental properties and my primary residence.

Unlike the VisionPRO 8000 series, these lack the ONE feature that make this more useful than a much less fancy thermostat automatic air circulation.

In addition to the "AUTO" and FAN ON", the VisionPRO model has a third option called "CIRC", which cycles just the fans periodically. This allows multiple level houses to keep consistent temperature at all levels of the house instead of the basement being cold and top floor being hot without out turning on the heat or AC.

Another drawback is that the touch screen usually goes bad in the second year. I'm not talking about the LCD breaking, but losing touch sensitivity with certain areas of the screen where you can no longer get any response from a more frequently used button such as the "hold" button.

Other minor, but important features missing on this consumer version are the following:

Lack of remote sensor support useful if your thermostat hits the Sun light and falsely runs the AC.

No option to lockout the touchpad. Most residences won't use this, but a great option for public spaces or if you are sub leasing.

Lastly, the warranty is 1 year for this item through Honeywell. The VisionPRO model has 5-year warranty, but REQUIRES installation by Honeywell HVAC dealer to get warranty service.

Recommended if you just want a fancier thermostat, but buy with Amex card for 2nd year protection. Better yet, buy the VisionPro model using Amex and deal with Amex for warranty service for the card's maximum 3 years.

--- Update ----

More of my thermostats lost the touch sensitivity, but was able to fix it by taking the case off and re-inserting the thin/flat cable that connects the screen to the main board. For some reason, this reinserting reset the touch functionality and everything returns to 100% operations.

Added an electric heater to a new walk in closet. This worked fine when we installed, but not even one year later, the thermostat is broken (in very light use). The electrician bypassed the thermostat to see if it or heater was at issue; heater works fine whenever you flip the circuit breaker. Thermostat: nada.

This mechanical based thermostat has a huge temperature swing to it. It wired in-line wity my electric heater (high voltage 240v, 2 powered lines in and out) easily. When I think it should turn it, I have to physically tap the dial and the heater turns on. When I think it should be done, I have to physically tap it again to turn off. Temp swings from below 68F to above 72F without me intervening with a tap. Looking for another thermostat now that is digital based.

Outstanding space heater. Much more heat than most other heaters. I think that is because it is just more efficient. . . All the power goes into generating heat, not a motor to oscillate the unit in different directions, like some space heaters. Have used it for several seasons now. No problems. Heats me and the room up very quickly. Sitting in front of it is like sitting in front of a warm and cozy fireplace. Only drawbacks are that it will dry out the room, there is no remote control, and the noise from the fan, while not terribly loud, is enough to keep light sleepers awake at night. I use this one when I want to warm the room up quickly, and then turn it off when I want to sleep, or just use a different model when I want a no-noise no-fan heater for sleeping.

Portable heaters are a mixed bag--they can be incredibly useful and they can start fires. I personally know two elderly women who ran portable heaters continuously at the maximum level . . . until the outlets caught on fire! In most cases, the circuit breaker will trip before this happens, but obviously not in all cases. The biggest trippers of the circuit breakers, where portable heaters are concerned, appear to be those running at high settings of 1000 watts or more. But lower settings under 1000 watts often don't provide enough heat. This Patton has a lower setting (#1) of only 750 watts, and yet feels like a heater running at a 1500 watt setting. Thus, it's an excellent choice for houses that can't handle the higher wattage settings. Although I will never plug any portable heater directly in an outlet any longer, after hearing of outlet fires. I either use a First Alert Fire Shield cord, or an extension cord that can handle 1875 watts. (Using an extension cord that can't handle at least 1875 watts can also cause a fire.) This heater also sells under the brand names of Jarden, Sunbeam and Holmes.

This space heater by Patton does a great job of initially heating up relatively quickly (fifteen minutes or so) and even while it's "warming up" for the very first time it pushes hot air outward into the room you want to heat. True, it doesn't heat larger spaces but on the other hand it's great for heating rooms about the size of my bedroom (120 square feet).

Setup is nothing. Just plug it in and turn the temperature knob (the knob on the right) to one of two settings. I recommend the warmer setting at least initially and then you can lower it after you get the initial blast of heat. As for the other control knob on the left, I turned that all the way up to get the maximum blast of heat. Another plus is that the unit automatically turns off if it tips over or overheats so there doesn't seem to be a fire hazard here.

The heater makes some noise while it's working but it sounds like a fan and some people will definitely like this; that sound actually helps me go to sleep faster at night! If you're a light sleeper, however, this could be a negative.

The only disappointment I have is that the temperature control is just one of two settings; and neither setting is specified by degrees Fahrenheit.

I recommend this space heater by Patton, especially for heating smaller rooms. People who want to heat larger spaces would do well to continue looking for larger and more powerful space heaters.

Honest reviews on Patton PQH307-UM Tower Quartz Heater with Adjustable Thermostat

I used it mostly in the fall and winter time. It worked pretty well. The thing i like most was that it had a automatic cut off, if it ever gets knocked over. I have kids so that was a plus. It heats up pretty quick it doesnt work well in large rooms, but it works more so in bedrooms. I mean dont get me wrong itll heat an entire apartment (600sq ft.) but it wont be toasty just warm enough. I had to retire mine cause the power cord broke off at the very base of the machine. Maybe from being bent to much, not sure. But a good heater. My next one i want it to be more powerful.

I purchased this heater on the recommendation of my wife, who was using it while waitinf for a new furnace to be installed. And my wife said it keep two large rooms warm. I ordered it for myself, and WOW. This heater is worth the money. Even my dog loves it. It has quartz heating, and a fan to blow out hot air. So it really heats a good size room very quickly. The heater starts heating right away, and the heat is going full blast in about 2 minutes. It works very efficiently, and I usually use it on the low setting. The heater is light weight and easy to move around. I will be purchasing another one, because it just works so well. At such an affordable price. This heater can be summed up in just one simple word "awesome".

This is the second Delonghi oil heater that I purchased through Amazon & I am completely satisfied with both of them. (I also purchased the Delonghi HM25E Dragon Ultimate Oil Filled Radiator Heater purchased in 2005, twice the cost, twice the heater.)

I like the size of this smaller one a little more -it fits better into the small space where I am using it. We use it in a 10' x 10' main bathroom. The room is not insulated (85 year old home) and gets almost no heat from the home's central heating system (radiated water heat).

I have used it every day this winter and found that it is more than adequate for this room, even on the coldest winter days. The temperature recently has dropped to -5 F overnight (Chicago) and I have the heater set on high to turn on 60-90 minutes before I get up. The bathroom is always nice and toasty in the AM, even though the exterior wall is cold to the touch.

I was concerned about the safety of using an electric heater in the bathroom because of electric shock and fire risk. No problem on either account. I recommend using a GFCI electric outlet to reduce the risk of electric shock; also, the oil-filled radiator does not build up an excessive amount of heat (as long as you don't cover it keep it open so heat can radiate away from it).

The heater has on/off switches (one for high, one for low) and a electro-mechanical timer. You set the current time with the dial, then set the timer to turn on & off as much as you wish during the day. You can be accurate to within about 15-30 minutes. The unit must stay plugged in for it to keep accurate time. Electronic LED timers (like on the Delonghi Dragon) can be set more accurately, but usually have a limited number of on/off automatic settings (Dragon has a limit of 2).

This heater also has a "thermostat" of sorts. It doesn't give a temperature, just gives a min/max range of 1-6 (my other one goes to 11). A 6 setting for about an hour is necessary for a toasty 10x10 bathroom at 0 degrees F, while setting at 3 for an hour is sufficient at 32 degrees.

Energy consumption my electric bill increased only about $8-10/mo from fall to winter, a small price to pay.

The heater is short (about 16-18 inches)& very stable, fits under my pedestal sink between the sink & tub perfect spot. It gets hot to the touch, but not so that you (or a child) might burn yourself.

Bought two of these last year and really like them. They are only 15" high (21" long) flat saucer feet for good stabliity, and no sharp metal edges for the kids to hit their heads on.

The Timing and temperature dials are easy to use. We used them last year when natural gas was so expensive. They did such a good job keeping the kids rooms at a consistant temperature at night that we plan to use them this year too. It worked out much better than using the house thermostat at night.

Update Dec. 2012: This is the 3rd winter that I am using these heaters. They are great for continuous heat. I'm still using only the "Low" switch and around "3" on the dial. We just had zero degree temps and I turned the closed laundry room heater to 4.5 for a couple of days to protect the pipes.

Here's how simple it is to test and learn to use your heater:

Take the heater to a room that you can close the door to and will not use for the next 24 hoursspare bedroom, bath, or garage. Before you plug it inpush all the red pins on the timer dial toward the center. This will prevent the heater from going on and off during your testing. You can program it later.

Plug the cord in. Click both red switches to on and they will light up. Each switch controls a separate heating coil. If they do not light up, go to the black box on the power cord and press the red button. If you now have both switches light up, you have just solved the problems of over half who have written reviews saying the heater did not work. Rotate the temperature dial to the highest setting. Run the heater for 3 hours. There should be a lot of heat coming off the unit. If both switches are still red, the heater is working.

You will smell the burn off but it is over at this point. Turn the switch for the hotter side off. You can continue the test in the room you want to run the heater in or leave it where it is. Turn the temperature dial down to a lower setting if you wish. It is better to run the unit on a low setting 24 hours a day than to have it going on and off. I found that I had to leave the door to the room open at setting #3 to keep it from getting too hot in my mountain home during the winter.

I ran 3 of these units in my 2 story home all winter and the main furnace hardly kicked on. They cost about $20 more a month in electricity compared to gas. Not bad.

I bought 7 of these units. I left each on for a month. I then boxed it up and tried the next one. I had one quit after 2 weeks and got a replacement. Once a room has been at a constant temperature for several days it does not take much to keep it there. If you want a warm bathroom, leave it on a low setting and crack the door. The excess heat will warm your hall and other rooms over time. The bath will stay warm no matter when you use it.

Timers are a weak spot and they will fail before the heater is worn out. Its your money. Other than a factory defect-like the one I hadmost of the complaints are because the people did not follow these steps. The manufacturer failed to explain these details.

I purchased this at the end of 2007 because I needed a safe, small compact heater. I bought this at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, paying a little less than 60 with a 20% coupon. It was a wonderful heater and did its job really well that I bought a second one a couple of months later. Don't expect this to heat a large room, it's only designed for small rooms. The GFI plug is a nice safety feature. I would have given this a 5 star if I wrote a review then. Almost a year later one of them broke. I thought that was just a lemon, but then the second one broke shortly therafter (warranty was only for a year). It's a shame because I really liked this heater, but I wish the durability was better. It's really unfortunate because there are not many oil-based heaters in this size to choose from and price was not a major criteria for me(I would gladly pay more for a quality heater that would last).

We got one of these at the hardware store. Liked it enough to get another at Amazon (at about half the price).

Great for a small room. One keeps our 11' by 14' TV room cosy. Doesn't dry out the air like the fan heaters, and totally quiet.

My wife loves the timer on the one in the bathroom. Nice in the morning, pretty easy to set up.

Two minor gripes. The cord comes out at the control end (you never see it in the picture). Also, it gives off a bit of a smell for awhile while it's new. They do mention this in the instructions and it did go away, but it might worry you if you're not aware.
