My oven has always been much hotter than the number on the dial. So, a while back, I bought this oven thermometer (Taylor 503 Connoissuer Line Oven Thermometer) which I hated because it was hard to read. So recently I bought this Sunbeam one and an MIU one (MIU #90069 Commercial Oven Thermometer) because it was 4 for 3 and I was tired of not knowing the oven temperature.

Then I turned my oven on to somewhere between 325 and 350F, put all three thermometers in the same part of the oven, and let it heat for a while. After 10 or 15 minutes, I opened the door and took a picture of the thermometers so I could get their readings at the same time.

The results were:

Sunbeam: approx 380F

MIU: approx 360F

Taylor: approx 380F

So, the 380-degrees have it. Anyway, my cooking experiences have led me to believe that my oven is more likely to be off by about that much.

The Sunbeam and the Taylor had the same temperatures, so the only difference between them is that the numbers on the Sunbeam are legible, and the Taylor costs three times as much.

Hooray Sunbeam!

I've never needed an oven thermometer before. That is until I moved to California and my apartment had an electric stove.

Me,only ever having used gas stoves, made the mistake of thinking that they were all the same. Well, my first meal in this oven was supposed to be meatloaf. I put the oven at 350, put the loaf in the oven and figured I'd have ample time to take a shower.

Well 10 minutes later, my house was full of smoke and there was a lovely black brick of what used to be meat in my oven.

After this little escapade, I was so paranoid about cooking anything in this oven, I would only set the thermostat to 150 and watch everything like a hawk.

Then one day, I'm surfing on Amazon and see this little beauty. I ordered it immediately. I now know that my oven was cooking at at temperature above 500 degrees (the thermometer only reads up to 500) when I so innocently put it on to 350 so I could cook my meatloaf.

The thermometer itself is very easy to read and can be put into the oven any number of ways, from sitting on a shelf to hanging from one. I am no longer afraid to use this oven and have made pies, cookies, cakes, pork chops, chicken and especially meatloaf several times now.

No more burnt food, no more smoke filled house and I'm getting ready to re label my oven thermometer dial to what the temperatures really are now (200 will get me 375) so the next person that lives here won't have the same problem.

Even if your oven thermostat is spot on, I would still get one of these, since you never know when it's going to decide to lose calibration and begin cooking at different temperatures.

Happy Cooking!

After I realized that my Sunbeam thermometer was off 10 degrees by testing it against other more accurate thermometers, I was told by Sunbeam that this thermometer is rated to be plus or minus 15 degrees of the actual temperature. Which makes this thermometer not accurate enough for my oven.

Honest reviews on Cook Rite Oven Thermometer, Stainless Steel

I bought this because my oven wasn't cooking things with any regularity, some things were done on time, some would take up to 45 minutes longer. This thermometer I have to assume it's accurate since as I mentioned, the stove has been acting strange has showed me that my oven temperature varies and doesn't stay constant at all. I hung it on the bottom of my top rack and it has never been in the way and I count on it. I will be buying a new oven as soon as finances allow.

Try to find a better one. My oven takes about 8 to 10 minutes to reach 400 this thermometer takes 15-20 minutes to reach 350 it shows my oven is not hot enough even though food is burning, so I know it is not accurate. I have never seen a thermometer take so long to register a temperature. Its also a pain cause it doesn't stand up without constantly falling over, & hanging it always falls off the hook with little vibration.

Updated 6/2012.

Update and RIP: Sadly, in 2011 my Soleus died. The main issue was that the compressor stopped switching on...the fan would blow, but no more cooling. Secondly, the exhaust tubes became brittle and then completely fell apart, unspiraling like some cartoon prop.

The death of the unit prompted me to come in and update the review. I'm knocking the product one star because of how long it lasted. I used it about twenty times per summer over three years, and that's not a great lifespan for a unit that costs this much. Additionally, Soleus still makes machines with the same exhaust hoses, but you can't easily buy replacements (I found some on eBay for $140 per set.) because they're plastic with a metal wire core, they're only going to last so long before cracking and failing. This being the case, I really expect the manufacturer to offer a replacement set for $50 or less.

This is still a good unit for those who have no other alternatives. But in all honesty, any time I used it I found myself brainstorming ways to get something different. Portable ACs are just too huge and costly for the cooling they accomplish, and they don't last long enough. That being said, options are VERY limited in my 2nd story apartment bedroom with weird windows, so another Soleus was ordered.

Original review:

The Soleus LX-140 is actually the third portable AC we had in the household. The fist, a discontinued Hampton Bay model worked well and is still operating in a second bedroom. The next, the Sunpentown WA-1010e, was terrible, could only cool the room by about 4 degrees, and broke after a year.

On to the Soleus. The most important thing in a portable AC is obviously cooling ability, and the Soleus lives up to its claims of being one of the more powerful units available. At 14,000 BTU, it has proven capable of getting my 150 sq ft bedroom down to 70 degrees on hot nights, and on sweltering summer days when it's in the upper 90's, it can drop the temp around 15 20 degrees if we completely shut out any sunlight and leave the unit running on high. It is also capable of cooling our larger 300 sq ft master suite, although it maxes out at about a 15 degree drop when it's hot and sunny. Unlike most of the other portable ACs we have looked at and used, this one does produce a steady stream of pretty cold air, and while it is massively huge and more expensive than window units, it rivals them in cooling capacity.

Features The unit has three fan speeds on all the settings and includes a dehumidifier and heater mode in addition to AC and fan. There is temperature control on the main unit that allows you to select anywhere between 61 and 95 degrees. If you set the Soleus to 71 degrees, it will run in AC mode until the room cools down, then it will switch to fan mode until the room warms up again. This is a nice feature that not all portable ACs have. There is a timer setting that can be accessed from the main unit, and allows you to run the unit for a specified number of hours. See the remote control section below for info on the 'time of day' timer. It's not the quietest unit in the world, but most of the noise is a result of the air being pushed through the unit rather than the annoying refrigerator noise you get from some. Light sleepers might not like it, but it drowns out the noisy neighbors with its rather non-offensive white noise. It could also stand to have better circulation features. There is a 'swing' mode on the remote that makes the vent rotate in an up and down direction, but it does not move side to side and the up-down differential is not all that huge.

Exhaust and drainage The unit comes with two 6 ft plastic hoses that need to be stuck out a window so that it can exhaust the hot air. The dual hose method is supposed to make the unit work a lot better, and between the dual hoses and the high power of the unit it seems to perform superior to any other unit we have looked at. The hoses are a bit wide and cumbersome and could stand to be insulated, but they do the job. While the manufacturer claims the unit does not usually need to be drained, I find their statistics a little optimistic. While I don't need to drain it when I am using it at night to drop the temp from 80 to 70, on really hot and humid days the water reservoir will fill up and need to be emptied every 2 days. Unfortunately, a big design flaw is that there is no automatic shut off on the unit. While the 'drain unit' light will come on in plenty of time, if you ignore it for more than a couple hours the water will start to seep out the bottom of the unit and it will just keep running. I did this once overnight and woke up to find about a gallon of watter puddling on the hard wood floor with all the electrical cords lying in it not the safest of situations. A second design flaw is that the drain is on the very bottom rear of the unit. If you place it on the floor, only a very very shallow pan can catch the water. There is a rubber hose that comes with the unit that can be used to drain the water either out a window or into a bucket, although either option feels a little poor white trash to me.

Power At 1500 watts, the unit is a bit of a power hog. All AC units are, and when it's 110 degrees outside the electricity expense is well worth it. However, it should be noted that many circuit breakers and fuse boxes can be overloaded when you throw this unit on with a bunch of other stuff. We had to find a plug on a breaker that was separate from our other main electronics, because running this unit, a tv, stereo and computer all on one breaker was not going to work.

Portability The unit is moderately heavy, although it does have wheels to make portability a little easier. The photos in the ads hide that it is a little deeper than you might think, and it's foot print is a rather large 20 x 20 inches. There are two exhaust hoses that reach about 6 ft in length, so it needs to be right under or right next to a window. We purchased a small table at Ikea for it to sit on so that the hoses extend straight into the window, which helps cooling capacity greatly since the primary exhaust hose is where all the heat from the room goes, and it can get rather warm. Extanding it to its full 6 feet greatly reduces the colling capacity of the unit, since that's like having a long tubular heater in the room. Better insulated exhaust hoses should be at the top of every portable AC designers list, but none of them seem to have them.

The remote that comes with the unit is so-so. It allows you to access most of the functions, although you need to point it straight at the unit or it will not pick up the signal. Even when the unit does communicate with the remote, it doesn't function 100% properly. For example, if I press 'mode' to switch from AC to fan, the unit will beep to tell me it received the signal. However, it may switch from AC to fan like I asked, or it may stay on AC, or it may switch to heater. Unfortunately you can't tell without looking at the top of the unit. There is also a timer setting on the remote that supposedly lets you program what time of day you want the unit to switch on, probably so you can come home to a cool room after work. This does not work all that well, since you have to remember to point the remote at the unit before leaving and hope it actually turns the unit on when it's supposed to. There is no clock or time of day setting on the main unit at all, so for this feature you have to depend on the remote 100%. The remote is not backlit, so it is hard to see at night.

Overall, the unit gets an A for cooling, a B+ for features, and a Cfor remote control. Since my primary objective was to cool a room and getting around the difficulties with the remote is relatively simple, I would indeed recommend this to anyone looking to cool a 200 400 sq ft room.

I paid $600 for Soleus PH4-12R portable a/c + heatpump. I was very happy for about three months, seemed to perform to specs. I even posted a very favorable review. But then it revealed it's true colors.

After about 3 months the blower developed a rubbing or bearing noise, transforming the unit to near intolerable.

After 5 months the unit simply went dead, not even any lights on the controls. Yes, wall outlet has power.

Soleus warranty requires me to ship unit two directions to CA for warranty service. Troublke is, warranty does not cover shipping. After an estimate to pack for shipping = $50, and shipping the 100# unit two directions by UPS for $150 each, my "warranty" repair is $350. They have no service centers except their factory.

If I ship back, I will have invested $950 in this unit which has already proven it has no reliability. And there is no guarantee that they will not find some arcane reason to honor the warranty, despite my outlay for shipping.

The warranty is a complete ripoff since they use no standard national network a key question when you think a large item has a good warranty. Ask to be sure before purchase.

Best Deals on Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner

Before buying a portable air conditioner, it helps to understand what you can expect and not expect from it. There is no way it will provide the cooling of central air, ductless air or even a really good window unit. I have owned all of these and speak from experience. However, when you move into a condo with all kinds of restrictions about what can be visible from the exterior or constraints on the architectural structure, then the portable is the best answer.

I have owned 4 of these and three different brands. My condo has three separate major spaces, 2 smaller for bedroom suite and office/den. The main living space is larger than the max recommended for any 120 volt unit, and that is where I now have the Soleus LX140.

The two smaller spaces are cooled with GE 10,000 BTU units that I have had for 5 years. HE quit making these units the year after I bought them They are quiet and have held up and keep the spaces in the upper 70s when the ambient temperature is in the mid 90s.

I used to have and Edgestar in the main space. I live in the Seattle area so only need the cooling about 2 months a year, and then not every day. The Edgestar was the worst unit I have ever owned. It was the noisiest unit and it quit in the middle of the second season. I called the manufacturer in Texas and they said it only had a 90 day warranty. They also said they had no service reps in the Pacific NW and couldn't help. After lengthy searching, I found one person who said they fixed them. After spending over $300, it still didn't work. The service tech said he would take it to the shop and return it in "New Condition." That was a year ago and I have never seen him or the unit again.

So I bought the Soleus. I found a dealer in Portland where I knew I could get to if needed. The manufacturer is in California, I can get there pretty easily too. Also, the Soleus has a 1 year warranty. I ordered the unit and it was delivered in 7 days. I set it up immediately but found that you had to use the remote to turn on the fan oscillator. It had to be the receiver or the transmitter, but I didn't know how to tell. I called the dealer, and within a few hours I got a call back from the manufacturer. They said they would send a new remote. If it still didn't work, they would send a label and an RMA. I got the remote in three days and everything worked.

The Soleus runs about 10 db quieter than the Edgstar. My main living space is oversizrd with 594 square feet and with partial cathedral ceilings giving about 5565 cubic feet. I am on the top floor, facing southwest with ceiling to floor glass across the entire space. Without any AC, the space has reached 110 degrees when it was 95 outside in the late afternoon. Also, there are no opening windows or sliding doors, so I am venting the unit up the fire place flu.

This week we had three days in the 90's. When it reached 98 degrees outside, the Soleus maintained the space at 81. When the temperature reached 85 today, the Soleus maintained the space in the mid 70s.

CONS: The only con I have at this point is that the fan oscillation is vertical instead of side to side. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning for that. Cold air settles and hot air rises so a constant upward blast that oscillated die to side makes better sense to me. My GEs do that very effectively.

As for evaporation, I have had it running for fiv continuous days without a drop of water coming from the drain. Of course the Seattle area has relatively low dew points. In areas like the midwest, east coast or south east, there may be more of a problem.

The next test will be longevity as to how long it will hold up. However, at this time, the Soleus LX140 has proven to be the best unit of its type that I have used and I am very impressed with the technical service assistance of the manufacturer.

Honest reviews on Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner

I have tried 5 different units over 8 yeasrs (two being this one). Only one worked 1/2 way decent, and it still has problems.

This one is the most powerful 110volt portable unit there is.

In general, they all end up leaking water all over the place. None of them seem to be able to evaporate the water as fast they are supposed to. By winter, I can expect the units to leak water everywhere, and the water light never comes on.

All 5 brands are cheaply made and by the same factory even though they are from different manufacturers.

If you are looking for portable AC. Better to skip it as you'll be lucky if you find a unit that satifies your needs. IF you are insistant, go with a better built unit. Google around for a unit built in the US, most likely it will be designed for server room cooling. Most likely that will run $1000-$3000.

I am on my 5th unit and wish we had just spent the money up front instead of having to replace the unit every year as we are doing now.

These units are generally cheap and you get what you pay for. I would rate this higher if not for the water issue (I just cleared an 1/8 inch of standing water out of a 12 x 12 room).

I have owned an operated four different models of portable ac over the years, and thus far the Soleus LX-140 has surpassed them all. As the other reviews state, you will not get quite the cooling capacity or functionality of central air or a quality window unit, but that's not what portable ac units are for, is it? If you use it for what it's designed to do that is, be a supplemental unit cooling one or two rooms, it works great.

Cooling capacity This unit cools better than any of the other portable AC units I have used. Like all air conditioners, the cooling capacity depends on the room you are using it in. In my personal tests of the unit, I found the LX-140 capable of the following:

1. 250 sq ft room, 85-90 degrees outside, sunny day time, drapes closed, room reduced to 72 degrees within an hour.

2. 250 sq ft room, 80-90 degrees outside, night time, capable of reducing room to low 70's or upper 60's and maintaining all night.

3. 250 sq ft room, 95-105 outside, sunny day time, drapes closed, unit can reduce temp to low 80's and maintain.

4. 500 sq ft room, unit can get into the lower 70's at night, but during day will max out at reducing temp to 80 when it's 90 outside or 85 when it's 105 outside.

This is far superior to other portable ac units. Other benefits include that it's quieter than my other units have been, and it produces a heck of a lot more airflow.

On the downside, the internal tank for water collection is a little small and can fill rapidly on humid days. Unfortunately, there is no alarm for when the tank gets full, and it will just overflow all over the place if you don't empty it. During the most humid parts of summer, I empty daily to prevent overflow, although really you can run it three days straight without emptying. When it's not humid, I never need to empty it (the unit evaporates the water itself). Therefore, if you plan to operate in Florida or some like clime, you should use the included hose and drain the water out a window or into a bowl.

The other downside is the slightly useless remote. The unit control panel is on the top of the unit, so you can't see it from across the room, and the remote kind of tells it what to do and kind of doesn't (this is hard to explain, but it's a really weird remote). Therefore, if you get up in the middle of the night and decide you want to reduce the temp and try to use the remote, it may do what you're asking, or it may turn the unit off, or it may shift it into heater mode. Weird. So, you usually have to go to the unit to adjust anything other than turning the unit on and off. I shoudl mention that the "timer" feature is also completely within the remote it has a clock and if you sit in someplace it can 'beam' the on command at a certain time of day, it will. This works so-so, with the remote sometimes turning it on and sometimes not.

These small downsides can be somewhat annoying, but fortunately they all have to do with ancillary features of the unit rather than functionality itself. As far as the ac performance, this is the most powerful and capable unit I have come across in this price class, and overall is a great value.

Got this gift for my mom for Christmas and she has not put it down. She was blown away by this blanket. When she unwrapped it initially she was in love with it because of how soft this blanket was. It was only after I told her that it was also heated that she nearly lost it. She brings it into every room she goes in and is always near it. The automatic switch off after 3 hours is great for saving power as well. If you expect this item to be EXTREMELY warm (about as warm as a heating pad) then you're wrong. This isn't made to do that, but it will warm you up no matter how cold the night gets. Strongly recommend this item, it's exceptional in it's design and function and for the price, this gift is VERY worth it. I hope you buy it and I hope the person you get it for loves it as much as my mom does already.

My first review: This is priced at $200 at Walmart. Why so much here? You want a hundred dollar tip? The ship there is a whopping 97 cents.

Update:

I bought this from Wal-Mart and am happy I did. It is small, so look at the dimensions carefully. But, I do enjoy sitting on the couch and having the flames twinkling out of the corner of my eye, or even staring at the thing is nice to do. It is fairly well made, and it does put out some heat. Not enough heat to take the place of a house heater, but on a really cold day it is nice to have it on. I have turned on the fireplace many times without the heat since I live in the south, and enjoy being able to do that. It really "warms up" the feel of the room. Another good thing is I have cats and am terrified of space heaters that they might get their little furry tails into, and this one seems safe to me from that perspective.

When we opened the box, found that the legs were broken. I called Dimplex, the manufacturer (per shipping instructions) and they indicated that they would send replacement parts. We should have within 5-7 working days. Have not received yet so I called. Now they are saying they do not stock the parts and therefore I have to send back to the retailer to get a new unit. They were going to call me to let me know, but have not had the time. They are too busy with other phone calls. Makes me wonder about the product....

Best Deals on Dimplex DS5629GP Traditional Electric Stove, Glossy Pewter

This is a very nice stove. The stove is very heavy, with solid construction. The pewter finish is a beautiful dark grey and the accents are very nice. The stove warms a room quickly and the flame is fairly realistic in a darkened room. Dimplex units have patented flame technology that uses a reflection of the logs to make it look like the fire is between two logs. There are glowing embers at the base. The logs themselves do not glow as they do in more expensive dimplex units. On the back of the unit, there is an adjustable thermostat knob, a heat on/off switch, and a fireplace on/off/remote toggle switch. This is quite a solid piece, much more so than the units I have seen in home stores and the flame effect is much more pleasing to the eye.

This is actually a large unit as electric stoves go which is one of the reasons I chose this model. There are multiple dimplex models that look similar and can be found on the dimplex website. I think the amazon price of $220 is very good as the MSRP is $499 and it is listed for $440 on the Lowes website. I could not find this model stove for sale on Walmart's website (as reported by another reviewer) at the time of this review.

This is our third electric fireplace/stove and our second Dimplex. If you are in the market for an electric fireplace because you want to add a cozy fireplace to a room without the expense of installing a real fireplace, I highly recommend dimplex. While you can usually find flame effect videos online, it is worth looking at the flames in the store to see the difference between the dimplex effect and others. If you are buying this for heat and simply the design of the unit then there are many options available, but the flame effect on a dimplex unit is much more realistic in my opinion.

I bought this fridge short notice when a defrosting attempt rendered my last beer fridge inoperable, and I felt a little pressured to hit the Go button on it as my tasty 12oz's of Heaven slowly warmed. But I must say I'm not disappointed at all! It's a great size, looks fantastic, isn't as heavy as I thought it would be, is very quiet, and keeps more than 60 bottles of Sam Adams ice cold and within arms reach with room to spare! My original fridge was a Kenmore job, with a pathetic waste-of-space freezer section (which this does not have) that for some unknown reason Sears saw fit to make the freezer floor out of the cooling element. So of course it iced up like you read about, and I, like many a man before me, took the task of removing this ice seriously (it was encroaching on my beer space as it grew!)...and pulled out my trusty, and ridiculously pointy, pocket knife. So after a bath of freon, or what ever the hell they're using these days to cool, washed over me with a snake-like hiss, I proceeded to slam the door and muscle the fridge out to the driveway where it still sits. Luckily my beer supply was low (it pains me to admit this), so I only needed to commandeer a single shelf in the practically useless "food" fridge as the wife calls it. But knowing this arrangement wouldn't last, I needed a new fridge, and fast. So I bit the bullet after reading a few whiny reviews about ridiculously trivial issues (like not getting cool enough, or damaged in shipping; neither of which plague(d) my unit), even springing for the $4 overnight option (Thank you PRIME!), and couldn't be happier. My pregnant wife likes it so much she's decided to throw caution to the wind and resume drinking. Who could resist pulling a frosty beverage from this bad boy and tossing it back at the end of a hard day? Not this guy! And this fridge delivers with style. Only thing I can think of as a drawback is it doesn't keep the ice frozen, but then, giving up room in it for ice when it could be holding more beer is just ludicrous. This scenario actually makes me shudder to consider.

Summary? Kick-ass fridge for the money and if you have Prime, pay the $4 to overnight it just so you can tell your friends you overnighted a FRIDGE for FOUR FREAKING DOLLARS. Then slam back a cold one for emphasis.

We purchased this refrigerator for our outside entertainment bar because of its size and energy efficiency rating. So far we are very satisfied. It is a quiet and maintains internal temperature keeping everything nice and cold. There are plenty of shelving options as they are all adjustable. The door has 10 can holder slots for beer or soda and also has adjustable shelves for bottles of soda or wine. There is a drawer on the bottom perfect for storing garnishes, cheeses or meats. There is plenty of room in the rest of the fridge to fill as you please. The door really is spot resistent, we are not constantly cleaning it! This was a great purchase; we highly recommend this item.

I had my Danby less than 24 hours before the problems started. I had the thermostat set at slightly more than half (probably 6/10) for the first night it was in use. The next day, I discovered that all of my 6 (expensive!) bottled beers on the bottom shelf (above crisper drawer) had frozen, and 3 of them had burst causing beer to go everywhere! Checked the rest of the beverages in the fridge to see if they were also close to bursting, but found those in the middle & top shelves not even beginning to freeze.

After this fiasco, I set the thermostat to about a third of the way up (probably 3/10) so as not to have a repeat incident. After another 6 hours, the stuff on the bottom did not freeze, but was very cold (great!). However, the items on the top shelf were barely even cool to the touch (not great). I proceeded to do a little test with a refrigeration thermometer leaving the thermostat at about one-third. After 30 minutes, the bottom shelf read 37 degrees. I moved it to the top shelf and waited another 30 minutes, and found it showing 54 degrees! A 17 degree difference between top and bottom!!! Not to mention that 37 degrees is WAY too cold especially when the thermostat dial is set so low.

So it seems that I am experiencing the same inconsistent cooling that at least 2 other reviewers are having. Amazon was great about setting up a replacement delivery & pickup. I am willing to try a replacement before calling this fridge a total failure. The replacement is set to arrive tomorrow, so I'll post an update in a few days. Wish me luck!

UPDATE: Received a replacement, and it had the same EXACT issue!!! Started it off with the thermostat at the midway point (most manufacturers recommend this setting), and placed identical thermometers on the top and bottom shelves. After one hour, the top read 55 degrees, and the bottom was at 30!!!! I am willing to accept a few degrees difference, maybe even as much as 6 or 7 tops, but 15 degrees is ridiculous. I would have to accept the top being at nearly 60 just to keep the lower half above freezing. Am sending this one back also (UPS is gonna hate me tomorrow), and am getting the Haier 4.5cu ft one instead. Fingers crossed...

Honest reviews on Danby DAR125SLDD 4.4 cu.ft. All Refrigerator - Spotless Steel

I got this unit for my office. I've had the unit for about a month. I got concerned with the temperature because the items on the bottom were freezing and the item on top felt warm. I did a little research and found out that the proper temp. of a refrigerator is supposed to be between 34-39 degrees Fahrenheit. Just above 32, freezing, and just below 40, when bacteria can grow. I kept adjusting the thermostat and couldn't get anywhere. So I placed 3 thermometers in the unit, bottom, middle and top shelves. There is a 20 degree different. The bottom shelf is at 25 degrees, the middle shelf is perfect at 37 degrees and the top shelf is at 45 degrees. I've done this for almost 2 weeks trying to adjust the thermostat just right to have the entire unit at somewhere between 32-40 degrees Fahrenheit. Nothing works. Even when it is left overnight and i check it first thing in the morning. There is still about a 20 degree temp. difference between the top and bottom shelves. It appears that there is temp. leakage through the doors or top of the unit due to lack of sufficient insulation. I cannot recommend this unit because it fails to hold a safe temperature, 34-39, throughout the entire interior. It's not safe for storing food that can spoil.

Works great in the winter to keep the garage to where you can use it for projects. Does require a 220 service be set up where ever you locate it which is a small price to pay to add a space where projects can be worked on.

This is a pretty good, little, electric heater. It's in an all-metal case. It has a non-detented thermostat. The detented power knob (Off, Fan only, I. (less power), II., III. (more power)) works much like opening a prescription pill bottle. The plastic, hinged handle is nice, too. I tested the tip over feature while moving it on the floor, and it works well! The whole unit shuts off if it's even a little out of plumb.

"Sparky," as I named him, gets pretty hot. The fan blows at what I'll call a slow to medium rate--sufficient to circulate the air and quite quiet. The thermostat works well, too.

Bought this heater at my local hardware store before reading these reviews. Sounds like they either work or they don't. My didn't. I brought it home, took it out to the garage (about 35ยบ F out there today), plugged it in and waited about an hour to see if it would warm up. Despite being on the highest setting and having the thermostat on it cranked, the heater barely put out any heat. It was level and stable, but the only heat I could feel from it was from about two inches away, and that felt like a hair dryer on the lowest setting (and that's being generous).

I returned it. I'm sure some of these heaters really get the job done, but I can't imagine that mine was functioning properly, and it sounds like a common problem. Light came on, fan whirred away (a little) but barely any heat came out. My halogen work light put out more heat at three feet away. Find another heater.

Honest reviews on Honeywell 1,500-Watt All Metal Heater #HZ-2110

I took a chance on this heater because of the January 2010 review that said it had no toxic fumes. But the one I just received (in September 2012) was so smelly, without even being plugged in and heating up, that I quickly repacked it and returned it. (Since the return was not because of damage or any error by Amazon, return shipping costs of $10.99 were deducted from my refund.)

If you could bottle this heater's odors you might label it "Eau de Service Station". The rubbery cord smelled especially strong to me, like new tires. These are smells that I know from experience never air out or burn off.

This is sad, especially if the product has changed that much since 2010. Many people who buy an all-metal heater are trying to avoid inhaling toxic fumes and have serious health reasons for doing so.

I've been getting by with Markel 198TE all-metal portable heaters, which used to have minimum smell, but in recent years the new ones are smellier and break down quickly. In desperation I just keep getting them replaced on warranty through a local store. And searching for something better.

I was so happy with this heater, at first.

It had good heat output, was incredibly quiet, and produced no chemical odor after a couple hours of use.

However, within two weeks, it stopped working. Even the fan won't come on. The only sign of life is the indicator light.

Sigh.

I've found that the "freezer" section of a mini fridge is pretty much a waste of space too small to be really useful, and in constant need of defrosting. The Danby all-fridge is a great addition to my tiny kitchen. It, and a stand-alone freezer, are all I need to keep my food fresh. The veggie crisper actually works, and the can dispenser is a nice touch.

--1 year later--

I've had the fridge for a little over a year now, without a single hitch or glitch. Still a great product!

I went with the positive reviews, ordered the fridge, and hoped that the seller had read the negative reviews that had criticized the packaging of the fridge.

Delighted to see that it was extremely well packaged with heavy crating protection. Fridge is perfect in every way, my last fridge died because of the freezer leaking, so I love the extra space. Great for white wine/beer/and it fits beautifully into the basement alcove. I picked black and honestly really glad I did, because you can't even see it in the alcove. It runs quietly (I even opened the fridge several times because it was so quiet I wanted to make sure it was running!) so both thumbs up on this fridge.

Honest reviews on

There aren't a lot of compact refrigerators out there in this size, without a freezer. This one also has a built-in light, which is useful and storage for larger items, such as 2 liter bottles. Our unit arrived quickly... maybe too quickly, as it arrived with two large deep dents along the right edge of the door. There is a long story that goes with resolving the problem but I'll go straight to the bottom line. We spent two months emailing the vendor, Price Pros (Texas), to get them to replace the unit or even to ship us another door. They refused to take responsibility for the damage. Action was finally taken only after we requested an RMA number. Even then they did nothing, referring us to the manufacturer. It took another two months for the manufacturer to replace the door.

Please see the photos I uploaded for details on a pretty straightforward kegerator conversion. My conversion is geared to homebrewing. 5 gallon batches to two 5 gallon corny kegs. Other commercial kegs should fit( 2 x sixth barrel, 1 x quarter barrel , 1 x slim quarter barrel , 1 x half barrel). Check your own dimensions on this.

You will need

For your work:

Protective eye wear (optional as is being a Darwin award winner)

Drill

Phillips head screw driver to remove door screws

2 1/8" Hole Saw bit to drill the opening on top of the fridge for your draft tower drill slowly )

Weatherproof metal tape to seal exposed insulation

Cheap cutting board or other rigid material to anchor tower (optional)

Utility knife to cut dry erase or other material used to replace inner door moulding.

For your beer:

Draft tower, CO2 tank and regulator, Corny kegs, lines etc. All products available on Amazon)

A digital temp controller is a recommended addition to the finished product example Ranco ETC-111000 )

I have provided two personal photos to show size. I am satisfied with this heater but beware that most states, including mine (MA), prohibits vent-less heaters as primary sources of heat and should only be used as supplemental.

With that said, please be aware that although this product is 99.9% efficient, the unit does give off a smell. The gas by-products that are burning off into the air make the .1% and it is important to keep one window cracked 1 inch.

I have a 1000 square foot apartment, and this year (December 2012) temperatures have dropped below 32 degrees a couple of times and this heater has more than done its job. It is extremely warm and very nice to look at with the blue flame and compact size.

This model does NOT have a digital reading of the temperature despite the product image description. I did purchase an indoor digital thermometer along with a carbon monoxide detector for safety, it has not detected any levels of carbon monoxide. It does come with a kit to either mount it to the wall or have it free standing.

I spent over 5 months researching gas heaters before buying this one, and am overall very satisfied with the physical and mechanical performance.

I did have to call customer serviced a couple of times with questions and they were not only helpful but there weren't any wait times.

Great heater! We had a Williams brand wall heater that failed on us. If we were to fix it , it would have cost us around $150 just to buy the pilot for the old heater SO we decided to try this product. Note that the one we bought does not require vent, blue flame, natural gas. The blower fan blows the heat from the unit towards the room it helps make the room heat quicker and it helps keeps the unit and the things close to it reasonably cool. Also we got the blue flame coz we read somewhere that the yellow flame gives out radiant heat (not sure). The 20k btu heats up a 20-30 degrees 700 sqm (approx) fairly quick. I would buy this product as a gift or recommend it to others.

I mounted this on the wall of my basement shop and I set it and forget it. I have an old thermostat that I use to monitor the temperature and it stays a constant 72F. The flame modulation feature works very well. The 2012 winter is very mild, but I am still glad I got it. This is a quality unit.

Honest reviews on Mr. Heater 20,000 BTU Natural Gas Blue Flame Vent Free Heater

I am pretty happy with the heater, but I have run several tests on the blower fan ... and I can't even tell a 1 inch difference in whether the fan is on or off.

I hear the fan running, (and I can see the blades moving) but it does not blow into the room (not even one inch more than if the fan is not on) I am beginning to think the fan blades have no significant pitch to them ie they just spin but do not move any air forward.

What do you suggest?

Functionality:

I just had the T5800 Color Touch thermostat installed yesterday by my HVAC person and I love it. I love that the mobile app and website utility allows me to control my thermostat away from home, see usage info, send a message to be displayed on the thermostat screen, and other features. One suggestion I do have for the user interface is that while the mobile app/website utility allows you to turn vacation mode on or off, it does not allow you to set the start date and end date for your vacation. Setting up the start date and end date is something you have to do at home. I'm not sure if on/off feature for vacation mode from the mobile app bypasses any dates that might be stored in the thermostat and turns it on/off, or if the dates that are already setup are taken into account. It would be nice to know that. As a user and being busy with packing for my trip and such, I'm thinking that I might forget to setup the vacation schedule before leaving home and would want to do that later on after I leave home.

Internet Connection:

In regards to the internet connection, I was able to successfully set it up and test the mobile app to verify it was working. However, later in the day, I noticed that the internet connection was not working. I was not able to login with the mobile app and I saw a red X in the upper right hand corner of the thermostat screen, indicating that the internet connection was not working. I don't know what caused this; perhaps it's due to the nature of wifi, such that wifi tends to be intermittent and goes on/off at times. I tried repeatedly to make it work, but couldn't. I tried pressing the reset button on my wireless router and trying the setup process on the thermostat, but did not have success. I then tried power cycling the thermostat by removing the front part of the thermostat and putting it back on again, and running through the setup. But it could not connect. The Accessory Info screen seemed to indicate that it could not connect to skyport. The following morning, I then tried to reboot my wireless router again by clicking a button within the web interface for my router on my computer. I also tried to login to my venstar account on my computer to see if that worked, and it did. I then went through the wifi setup process again on the thermostat and finally it worked! I just hope this connection issue doesn't happen anymore. One other comment regarding the wifi connection is that I saw on the box that the wifi key came in, indicated that it's compatible with 802.11b/g. The wireless router I have is 802.11n, which seems to work fine. But, 802.11n has been on the market for a while and I'm surprised that the wifi key was not designed to also take advantage of that.

FirmWare Updates:

I have one comment in regards to how firmware updates need to be made. You have to use the Color Touch Assistant software to save the firmware settings to an SD card and import it, by plugging it in the SD slot on the thermostat. Considering that this device is wifi capable, you'd think that you it would be able to download the firmware update wirelessly and install it, when selected by the user. I have other devices that already do this.

Product Support:

The product support at Venstar is very fast and good. Whenever I emailed Venstar support for questions or issues, the responses were pretty quick and they were helpful.

I will provide future updates as necessary.

I have a vacation home in Maine that I go to most weekends. During the colder months, it is always so chilly in the house when I arrive on the weekends because we leave the heat set at a lower temp to save on fuel when we're not there. But, after installing this wifi key and the Venstar T5800 colortouch thermostat...I can now adjust the heat up to a comfy temperature long before I arrive. It's fairly easy to set up the unit (as long as you have all the correct wires) and the online account is easy to use from my iphone, ipad, or laptop.

No more waiting for the house to warm up each weekend...

Best Deals on Venstar ACC0454 Skyport Wi-Fi Key for ColorTouch Thermostats

Its a little bit big for just being an antenna, however, it sometimes does not do what it is suppose to and I had to re-set 2 times so far for it to pickup my Wi-Fi signal, though, my router/transmitter and this unit is quite far from each other. Otherwise, its a nice thing and allows for remote control of the Thermostat.

Honest reviews on Venstar ACC0454 Skyport Wi-Fi Key for ColorTouch Thermostats

I love the ability to pickup my iPhone and modify the settings on my home thermostat while away. This allows for better conservation while away but also a warm home upon return.

Unfortunately, the Wifi Key utilizes the same connector as a backup SD card. Therefore, if one chooses to backup with a SD card the wifi password with have to be reentered into the Wifi Key upon reinsertion.
