I'm an amateur carpenter and tinkerer of all things flashy and shiny. I built a cabinet style TV stand / AV hutch for my flat screen and entertainment components. The front of the unit has doors which stay closed most of the time, so I needed a way of keeping all my toys inside cool. An AV receiver can get hot pretty quick if no ventilation is available. I've heard the latest gaming consoles will put off a good bit of heat as well, and one of those will be in the unit soon too. Given my need for a breeze, I installed two small PC-style quiet cooling fans (12V, 200mv each), wired in parallel and venting out the back panel (airflow enters around the doors). I then wired this temperature switch between them and a 12v wall wart rated for 400mv. Once the temp gets a little too high in the cabinet, the fans kick on and cool things down within a matter of minutes. The temp does have to get a little hotter than I would like to kick on, usually around 95 or so, but the next temp scale on the 80 degree switch had a low end of 65 degrees. My house temp runs around 70 degrees, so that switch would have caused the fans to run all the time.

Granted there are other options for my application. I wouldn't feel right describing it above for others without mentioning the fact that you could go with a ready made product like the "Coolerguys Cabcool1202". That is an all-in-one cabinet cooler with the power converter, dual fan setup, and thermostat all built it. It runs around $70 and has a slightly lower temp scale, more suitable for cabinet electronics. I like to tinker, and didn't want to spend that much money though. This little switch suites my needs, and my whole setup only cost about $35 to construct.

Note that you will probably need to construct some sort of bracket to securely fasten this switch for oddball applications like mine. I made a simple one out of a piece of wood, two small bolts and a few nuts. Also check out the power range of this thing. I'm only running it at 12V and 400ma. However, it will carry up to 250V @ 25amps!

5 stars because it works, not sure how else I would rate it. I did not deduct given my need for a mounting bracket as that was an application specific issue, not a product issue. Also, I have not tested the actual open/close temps with a separate thermometer yet, but these types of switches are usually pretty reliable within their specified ranges.

I used this on a heater in a retirement home room. The heater is cycled hot water with a constant running fan. The unit is under an outside window. When the hot water stops then you get cold air. I put this switch on the heating element and in series with the fan motor. Now all you get is heat and no cold air. Makes the room a lot more comfortable because of the even tempature.

I always buy through Amazon if I can because of good parts with good prices and no rip offs in shipping costs.

Using this switch to turn on fans in my entertainment cabinet. On and off temps are a little higher than I wanted, but this was the closest available. Could use some info on type of connector needed for wires.

This device works exactly as expected and has an auto reset to boot. This device closes on thermal achievement, meaning it completes a circuit and does not break it. I use this to trip a relay that engages full vents in the mechanical room.

I fabricated my own RV refrigerator vent fans and installed this on the flame tube as shown on another site. I used a 1/2 inch aluminium wire tie down and formed it to the shape I needed, then attached this with nuts and screws. Be careful not to over tighten. After starting the fridge and the sensor warmed up the fans kicked on and all works fine.

The design of this product caught my attention, plus it would work with my existing wall and baseboard heaters. Its shortcomings are that it only has two programmable temperature zones and, particularly deficient, is the much too broad range of temperature control. For instance, if you set it at 70F, the actual temperature could range from 67F to 73F -too broad a range for my comfort and expectation.

My 86 year old dad bought one, he said it would be good when the grandkids. A great product, love that the basket not only comes out but can rest on the side. Each kid was able to have their favorite for dinner, corn dogs, tater tots, chicken nuggets. Breakfast became very easy with french toast sticks. Made well and easy to use.

Received a knock-off of the Whirlpool defrost timer kit #482493 . No instructions, no hardware, and mounting holes too small. Jumper was already configured to pin #1 (which was correct for my model after an internet search for the instructions) but I had to drill the holes to the proper size to fit the plastic pins in the frig. Working for now but a real pain. The genuine Whirlpool FSP replacement kit includes mounting hardware and installation instructions.

Sold by Supply Edge and fulfilled by Amazon. Listed as a genuine Whirlpool part. I was a Whirlpool parts distributor for 40 plus years. This is a non genuine part. Comes in plain box, no identification of mfg or brand. No mounting hardware and no instructions included. The timer has a loose lead you have to install on terminal 1 or 2. You must have the instructions to know which terminal to place lead on. Different. Terminal used for certain models. I ordered item expecting to receive genuine FSP Whirlpool part. Not Amazons fault, seller misrepresented item. . Other vendors may be selling genuine Whirpool part. But not Supply Edge, avoid them. Will be sending this cheap knockoff back for refund.

Honest reviews on Whirlpool 482493 Defrost Timer for Refrigerator

I choose this part because they arrived on time in time at a fraction of the cost. I used it to replace an Adaptive Defrost Board after a new one did not work. The refrigerator does everything perfectly except count how many times you use ice. $10 as opposed to over $100 but the $100 part did not even work. I converted the refrigerator from Adaptive Defrost to Timed Defrost.

Works but I gave it 4 stars because it comes with no paper work on installing the tail wire and you will have to refer back to internet for location.

Reading the other reviews of this product I realized I had to write one of my own to help potential purchases realize they will really be missing out if they bypass this heater. This is the fourth space heater I've purchased in the last two months and finally one I can keep.

My living room has three sets of glass french doors, high ceilings, and lots of windows. It is very hard to heat it, but there is no central heating system, so I have to rely on space heaters. I tried the expensive Vornado (over $100), which didn't make a dent in the cold, the noisy Honeywell oscillator (which not only gave me a headache it was so loud, but also didn't provide quite enough heat, though it heated better than the Vornado), and the WindChaser radiant heater (which left the room freezing cold but made me sweat at the same time, extremely unpleasant). Finally I found this item.

It heats the room to the point where it actually shuts off sometimes, having reached the desired 65 degrees at night or 70 degrees in the day. The fan is as quiet as the Vornado when on high and is even quieter when on low. The quietest heater I've ever found. And as for the cord, while my oil filled heater does have a thicker cord and I do notice that this cord gets warm where that one doesn't, after 96 hours of continuous usage, it is just barely warm. Hardly anything I would worry about starting a fire, though a thicker cord would be a good investment for the manufacturer to make.

Given the natural limitations of space heaters, I think you simply can't do better than this one. If this heater doesn't work for you, then an electric space heater isn't going to do it for you and you should be looking at other heating options entirely.

I bought one of these at Wal-Mart for $28 (their normal price is ~$42). Since it is a 1500 watt ceramic heater, it heats as well as any other ceramic heater that draws that much current, so nothing to comment about on that point. What that means is it will heat up your room, but it will take a while if it is not a small room. To be expected. Since it is not a radiant (quartz) heater, unless you stand very close, you will not feel a lot of warmth until the ambient T goes up and that will happen from the ceiling area on down.

It operates quite quietly (fan and rotation)and is not annoying. The rotation is smooth. The remote is a very nice touch and handier than I thought it would be. The LED display is bright, but located on top, so you can't see it from the front of the unit if you are seated. A design flaw, I think. The three warranty is nice. Cobstruction is pretty much all plastic, so I wonder how well the heat grates will stand up over time when the plasticizers evaporate out of the plastic. Nice styling. There is a handle, but someone stopped thinking too soon and there is nothing for your fingers to grip, so you cannot pick it up sercurely with one hand.

As the other reviewer said, the cord does get warm, but not hot. The insulation is the same thickness as in other space heaters I looked at not really fragile. I don't think there is cause to worry here. It does not appear to be UL listed, however, which may be common among cheap space heaters and is slightly disconcerting. Probably a cost control measure.

Overall a nice unit with no serious flaws and adequate heating.

This is a rewrite of an old review. I initially gave it four stars and went on a bit over that I felt the cord should be heavier and would likely be the thing that ends up putting this thing out on the sidewalk. Well, I've owned and used this heater for five years now and can absolutely confirm no problems.

Further, we rent the entire floor of a townhouse in Queens, New York City and this heater has been great particularly for changes of season when the landlord typically doesn't turn on the heat. It makes a big difference in our comfort when our home would normally be cold and uncomfortable without it.

It heats a rather large space very well and you don't have to be sitting right in front of it get toasty warm as the fan is strong enough to blow hot air quite a distance. It is also not too noisy--no motor noise from the fan or buzzing from the heat element, just the sound of air moving.

It can oscillate, but we never bother using that feature. Just put it in a corner or a doorway and turn it on.

I don't know what the difference is between ceramic heat versus that of a steam radiator or kerosene, but I can say from experience that the heat from this unit is very comfortable--not too intense with one focused hot spot and the rest just warm, and you don't have to be practically sitting on it either.

Bottom Line: Five years on, I've certainly gotten far more than my money's worth out of this excellent little heater.

Honest reviews on Lasko 751320 Ceramic Tower Heater with Remote Control

Purchased this product from Home Depot in January of 2006 and used it to heat a very small room, which it did well enough. This year after using it for about a month on and off, the heater would shut down after running for a short time. I cleaned the vents located in the back of the unit and it now appears to be working okay.

The power cord does appear to heat up to an alarming temperature.

Nice featuers: Oscilating movement, timer and remote.

Bad: Power cord heats up to where it is nearly melting. It will shut down if rear vents get clogged. And it does't do a good job of heating up a larger room. I wouldn't use it for a room larger than a 10' by 12' bedroom with 7' ceilings.

We have leased a two-story townhouse. We call the upstairs the Sahara and the downstairs Antartica. Heat rises up, so no matter what temp we turned the central on, the upstairs got hot, the downstairs.... ehhh. So we got one of these for our living room and come downstairs in the morning and turn it on. It makes a major difference. We *love* it. My dad's wall heater went out so we brought him this until the new one came (2 days later) and had to fight to get it back. :) We bought him one online and it should be delivered next week. He (like us) liked the silence, the osccilation, the temp control... everything. And we're not heating just a bedroom, we're heating a big living room. It makes a world of difference. Love everything about it. Remote control way cool when you're sitting down and think ya wouldn't mind having it a tad warmer around you. I've read the other reviews, we haven't had "cord" heating troubles. Just warmth and with the osccilation, it isn't just blowing one direction, it's spreading the warmth all around.

I got tired of carrying window units around and from one floor to the next to store them off season. These do take up a bit of floor space but are MUCH easier to install seasonally. You basically run a 6 inch clothes-dryer type of flex hose to a supplied window kit. The install kit is all light-weight. The power cord also has a built in surge suppressor/ power breaker. So, you must plug it in on the lower outlet. The 12,000btu unit cools a 12.5x18 room very well. Just make sure you have adequate air flow into the room. The Ac can actually suck the insulation out of the window and draw in outside air if your house is too tight or your room is undersized for this unit. The box says it is good for rooms up to 500 sq ft. After trying it, I believe it. I was so pleased with the unit I wanted a second smaller one. We are looking for something around 8,000 btu in the same make and similar model. The remote displays all the settings of the ac, including your target room temp. The timer to start or stop is a great feature too. It's based on number of hours in half hour increments. Say it's 9am and I want it to start at 11am. You enter 2.0 using up/ down on the keypad. The other great thing about it is this: if it is really hot inside and cool and/ or humid outside this unit will run based upon the indoor temp. That is great if you have allergies or are bothered by humidity for any reason. Window models make you open the windows when it's cooler outside and open windows may not cool off the indoors enough! I love this unit. In hind site would I buy it again? You bet. Like I said, I'd like a second one.

Bad design Negative air pressure; Poor window mount

I purchased the Sylvania SYL-12PE portable air conditioner. The single-hose exhaust system is just bad. If you need this type of unit, get a two-hose system (separate intake and exhaust hoses).

Pros:

1) can be used as an A/C unit or as a dehumidifier.

2) nice control panel

3) not too heavy

Cons:

Bad design. Can't cool without causing warm outside air to infiltrate.

The unit uses only one air hose, which exhausts warm air from the unit to the outside. This design is inherently problematic. By sucking the air out of a room, it causes negative air pressure in the room (and house) and causes the hot outside air to infiltrate into your house from anywhere possible: chimney flue, an open window in another part of the house, gaps in windows, etc. It's impossible to exhaust air out of a room without replacing it by an equal amount of air from somewhere else. So as this air conditioner is cooling one room, it is also causing warm/humid outside air to be sucked into your house through any place possible. At first, I thought this A/C was doing a nice job cooling my living room, but when I went into other parts of the house, they were heating up from all the infiltrated air. To use this A/C in a room, you really need to open a window in that same room. Obviously, the efficiency is poor.

Con:

Another problem is the window mounting. It was designed for a window without a sill. If you have a sill, then you have to add a fat foam strip under the window mount. It seems to be a last-minute "fix" for another bad design. When it rains, the foam strip acts like a sponge. So you have a big, fat, wet sponge sitting on your window sill. There is no flapper valve on the frame's exhaust opening. If there is a blowing rain, the rain will get into the exhaust hose (and possibly into the unit or your house). Also, the window mounting frame does not fit very well.

Summary:

The unit is nice, but the implementation is bad.

I have provided two personal photos to show size. I am satisfied with this heater but beware that most states, including mine (MA), prohibits vent-less heaters as primary sources of heat and should only be used as supplemental.

With that said, please be aware that although this product is 99.9% efficient, the unit does give off a smell. The gas by-products that are burning off into the air make the .1% and it is important to keep one window cracked 1 inch.

I have a 1000 square foot apartment, and this year (December 2012) temperatures have dropped below 32 degrees a couple of times and this heater has more than done its job. It is extremely warm and very nice to look at with the blue flame and compact size.

This model does NOT have a digital reading of the temperature despite the product image description. I did purchase an indoor digital thermometer along with a carbon monoxide detector for safety, it has not detected any levels of carbon monoxide. It does come with a kit to either mount it to the wall or have it free standing.

I spent over 5 months researching gas heaters before buying this one, and am overall very satisfied with the physical and mechanical performance.

I did have to call customer serviced a couple of times with questions and they were not only helpful but there weren't any wait times.

Great heater! We had a Williams brand wall heater that failed on us. If we were to fix it , it would have cost us around $150 just to buy the pilot for the old heater SO we decided to try this product. Note that the one we bought does not require vent, blue flame, natural gas. The blower fan blows the heat from the unit towards the room it helps make the room heat quicker and it helps keeps the unit and the things close to it reasonably cool. Also we got the blue flame coz we read somewhere that the yellow flame gives out radiant heat (not sure). The 20k btu heats up a 20-30 degrees 700 sqm (approx) fairly quick. I would buy this product as a gift or recommend it to others.

I mounted this on the wall of my basement shop and I set it and forget it. I have an old thermostat that I use to monitor the temperature and it stays a constant 72F. The flame modulation feature works very well. The 2012 winter is very mild, but I am still glad I got it. This is a quality unit.

Honest reviews on Mr. Heater 20,000 BTU Natural Gas Blue Flame Vent Free Heater

I am pretty happy with the heater, but I have run several tests on the blower fan ... and I can't even tell a 1 inch difference in whether the fan is on or off.

I hear the fan running, (and I can see the blades moving) but it does not blow into the room (not even one inch more than if the fan is not on) I am beginning to think the fan blades have no significant pitch to them ie they just spin but do not move any air forward.

What do you suggest?

I replaced the lower heating element in our electric hot water heater, it then worked fine, except it would get so hot it would trip the reset button. I looked at the lower thermostat and it looked like it had gotten too hot, somewhat melted. I ordered this replacement, and followed online instructions, it only took about 10-15 minutes start to finish, and the hot water heater works perfect now. I am very happy to have saved the money by doing it myself. This part fits perfect, seems well made, functions as it is supposed to, and is very reasonably priced.
