I installed an exhaust fan in my garage. I wanted it to come on and go off automatically. I bought the Duct Stat for this purpose. I mounted the Duct Stat to a rafter in the garage, making sure the air hole in the back was unobstructed. I plugged the Duct Stat into a 110v outlet that was all ready installed in the garage. Then I plugged the fan into the Duct Stat. Here is how I set the temperature: First I put a thermometer in the garage. When the temperature in the garage reached the temperature I wanted the fan to come on, I set the Duct Stat. I moved the switch on the Duct Stat to heat. This sounds backwards but it's not in this case. Remember this devise was designed to be used in ducting. I moved the adjustment screw until the fan came on. No need to move it anymore. When the temperature gets to the set point the fan comes on. It will stay on as long as temperature stays above this point. If the temperature drops below this point it will turn off. This setup works perfectly and keeps my garage a lot cooler in the hot summer months.

We live in Maine and we have an air-tight fireplace to supplement heating in our home. It has a cement block air chamber around it with a 110V fan used to move air from floor level ... through the air chamber area ... and then out into the home via slotted vents in the chimney above the fireplace. The problem was that we would turn off the fan when we went to bed so that it would not run all night after the fire died out and thereby loose out on circulating the heat during those first several hours when the fire was still burning. So ... I ordered the DuctStat (which arrived on time and in good condition) hoping to automate the fan to turn on when the heat in the air chamber reached about 75, then continue to run until the fire died out and the temperature dropped below 75, hence turning off the fan.

When I received the DuctStat I used a hair dryer and IR temp gun to set the ON/OFF point and then plugged it into the fans electrical circuit. We used it last night and it worked perfectly. I am very happy with the results so far and if it continues to operate as it did last night, I would give this product the fifth star.

The DuctStat 100 thermostat seems like a nice little unit for what I'm doing, but so far the first one they sent was defective. I'm hoping the relacement works. I can't give it more than 2 stars until I see it work!

Also, ClimateDoctors didn't put enough postage on the first shipment so I had to go all the way down to the post office to pay the postage due before I could receive my package. To their credit, ClimateDoctors gave me a rapid refund of the postage due.

That is, kindly note it is 90% polyester, 10% Egyptian cotton. WTF? I hate that kind of thing.

I got this from another site, hoping it would be light and warm. It is light, and pretty, but it's like two pieces of flannel with thick wires inside. There is nearly nothing to disguise the fact that you're sleeping under a web of wires. Very disappointing, and I'm sending it back. I came here to find another choice.

I manage several buildings that feature these, They are very common in apartments and they work very well. Lots of heat, pretty low noise, and they take up very little wall space; just don't place furniture too close to them and vacuum the grill out once a year. These are often run by a wall thermostat; over-riding the built-in one.

I ordered this as a replacment for a failed unit. It was an exact match and installed easily in place of the old one within minutes. The prior unit failed after we had the house for four years. And I believe the original unit was installed a few years before we bought the house. So it lasted 4+? years.

I have Cadet wall heaters in my apartment. One of these 2000 watt units in the living room, two 1000 watt units in the 2 bedrooms.

As far as I can tell, the thermostats are useless. Just as an example:

I have one of the 1000 watt units turned on in my bedroom right now. The room is 68-69 degrees. If you turn the thermostat all the way down to shut the heater off, and then turn it up until the heater turns on, it turns on at about 62 degrees. If you then turn it down until the heater goes off, it turns off at about 54 degrees.

That's an 8 degree swing. And the setpoints are WAY off from the actual temperature in the room.

I don't understand why I don't see a lot of complaints on the internet about this kind of heater. I don't think it's just Cadet, I think it's the particular type of thermostat, no matter who the manufacturer. I believe these are what are called "bimetallic" thermostats. As far as I can tell they are utterly useless. All they are good for is as an on off switch.

At least that is my opinion based on my own experience. If I'm missing something, someone please point it out to me.

Has anyone ever been actually able to control the temperature within a reasonable range with these? If so please speak up and explain how you were able to do so.

Bionaire BWF0910AR-WCU Remote Control Window Fan Review

Bionaire BWF0910AR-WCU Remote Control Window Fan
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I love this fan so much I bought a 2nd one!

I have a large and tall verticle sliding window, two units placed vertically on their side, end-to-end fit perfect in my window, and it is the perfect solution for my hot and hard to ventilate and cool upstairs bedroom.

I love the thermostat function, that starts the fans up in the morning when I am still sleeping, and the fans are so quiet, they do not wake me up, so I wake up to a perfect 74 degrees.

If I do not want a drafty breeze on my skin, I program all of the fans to exhaust all of the hot air out of the house.

If I want to feel a breeze, I can program 1, 2 or all 4 fans to blow outside air into the house.

Since I have 2 units in 1 window, I set one thermostat to 74 degrees, and I set the 2nd set of fan's thermostat at 76 degrees. So if it is extra hot outside, and the 1st set of fans can't keep the temperature down to 74 degrees, and the temp rises above 76 degrees, then the 2nd set of fans come on and they keep the temp below 76, so far I haven't needed to use any AC!

I am very pleased, and I will install the same in the second bedroom soon.

Twin window fans are easy to find in stores. But something like this is a true rarity. I decided to opt for this Bionaire model after a couple of cheaper ones died on me over just a couple of summers. The price on this baby may be steep, but its a top quality solid machine all the way. The blades on it are a little bigger than the usual you are used to seeing on store models, and whisper quiet during operation. It really moves a lot of air effortlessly and cleanly. This thing can be programed with the remote with so many options that its like a new toy for any man, (and something the more sensible lady can set once and forget about)... This unit fits nicely in most windows and is very easy to set up. The digital readout works perfectly and saves trips to your thermostat if your wondering what the actual temp is. I admit I am spoiled by this fan and would never settle again for something cheaper. A real keeper. Highly recommended for the discriminating window... : )

I purchased this fan through Consumer Wholesales here on Amazon. The fan, even with the extender panel does not fit my window. At the time I purchased the fan, the product info states extra extender panels were available. I tried to return the fan first. Consumer Wholsalers told me to contact Bionaire. There is no phone number on the Bionaire website, & the contact by email kept taking me back to their FAQs! I have been searching for weeks for the elusive "extender panel" & have not found it. What a waste of money!

Honest reviews on Bionaire BWF0910AR-WCU Remote Control Window Fan

The product overall is pretty good but could be improved with design changes.

It is going to be strange because some of the PROs are also negatives or features lacking.

PRO:

It has a Remote control

Fans turn in Exchange mode (out/in), Push out, or Pull in.

It gave me batteries for Remote.

Temperature Shut off if the temperature is reached.

CONS:

Window Size is limited especially for vertical windows.

========================================================

I wanted to put this in 4 places in my house but all my windows are vertical. However I saw that you could

extend the edge out on the horizontal so I thought it would work vertically. It however did not extend enough on my windows were about a foot taller than the fan could expand.

Remote Control

===============

Remote control lacks 1 of the buttons that is on the unit also you can't tell by any way what setting is on

the fan already from the remote point of view.

Temperature Shut

================

This is nice but I wanted it to adjust to pull from outside if the air on the outside is cooler than inside

or do an exchange automatically figuring this out it does no of that.

Timer Shut Off

==============

It lacks a timer shut off one could argue that the Temperature Shut off is good enough. Often it rained outside

and the room was still above the set degrees since it was late or I was not paying attention to the fan I often had to shut off the fan to avoid it throwing water in the gears. If it could detect moisture instead using a barometer or something that would be better but since I never seen that I don't expect that but other fans have timers that shut off after so many hours.

These fans have a history of thermostat problems, but I had hoped that they had been resolved. In my case they were not. The thermostat would only read between 74 and 77 degrees when running. When I unplugged the fan and let it sit next to an AC vent for an hour, the temp would go down to 68. When I plugged the unit back in....with or without the fan running, the temperature climbed back up to 74 degrees quickly, and remained between 74 and 77.

Additionally, the fan was shipped in flimsy original manufacturers boxing. While I understand that mechanical items sometimes fail, I was surprised at how difficult the seller made the return, challenging my ability to troubleshoot a fan, trying to force an exchange when I wanted a refund, and demanding I handle the resolution their way. I eventually had to engage Amazon to intervene through the A to Z guarantee process.

I bought this thermostat and installed it myself though Honeywell is quite clear that this is not for homeowner installation. It's my understanding and it's clear from the documentation, that only professional HVAC people are supposed to install this.

Though you can install this without the Equipment Interface Module (EIM), I decided to wait, get the EIM, and then do the full installation. The first EIM I ordered was the wrong one, so you have to be careful about that. The EIM is installed next to your equipment, you run almost all the wires from your devices to the EIM and just a two-wire thermostat wire (for power) to the thermostat itself. Once powered up, the EIM, the thermostat, the outdoor remote, and the handheld remote can all start talking with each other over the air and things are swell from that point on.

I have a forced hot air, oil furnace, an air conditioner, and a powered bypass humidifier. I also got the optional return and supply air temperature sensors. Everything wires into the EIM: the humidifier can use one of three universal terminal pairs. When you setup the thermostat for the first time, you tell the thermostat what you have and what's wired to what ports on the EIM.

I did run into some quirks. When I opened up my furnace to find the power supply, I didn't realize the low voltage thermostat power is actually AC, not DC. I was carefully (I thought) testing everything as I went and ended up confused when I didn't read the voltages correctly on my meter. This was a rookie error. A professional installer would have known immediately that 24 volt AC power is used.

You are given the option of having the thermostat control the humidifier and run it even when the heat is not on. I have not been successful in implementing that option and the thermostat didn't run properly with that option set. Once I put the options back to the more typical situation where the humidifier only runs when the furnace is on, everything ran perfectly.

You have to enter a code to get to the installer options after you first set everything up. This code is not hard to find and if you read the installer instructions carefully, you can find it easily thereafter.

Once in place, the thermostat is excellent. It recovers from lost power without a hitch and no new programming or resetting is needed. The touch screen works very well. The options are plentiful and excellent. You can, for example, hit a button for "Stay home from work" and it will keep the heat on for you. Controlling the house heat using the remote control as your temperature sensor works very well. (I need this as the wall-mounted thermostat is affected when I have a good fire going in the fireplace formerly leaving the rest of the house freezing.)

I'm very pleased with the thermostat though I don't expect any help from Honeywell if something goes wrong.

**************** Update... three months later... ********************

I spent some time going through all the wiring on all my equipment. I found wiring diagrams for the furnace and air conditioner. I got better light into the nooks and crannies and took my time identifying everything on everything. I found it helpful to take pictures of items, load them onto my computer, and then blow them up to see details and to have everything in the same place.

The end result was that I found several places where technicians over the years had swapped wires here and there. Things worked with simpler thermostats but I think these swaps were causing problems with this fancier system.

I took my time, straightened out the wiring for the furnace, hooked it up, tested it, then did the same for the fan relay, then the A/C, then the humidifier. I tested things as I went and made sure I was matching all the wiring diagrams.

Bottom line was that I got it all working beautifully. I mentioned that the thermostat has a code-locked installer section. In that master menu, there are all sorts of sub-menus for setting up and testing the system. In the testing section, you can go through each component one by one and turn them on and off. If you have the sensors, you can check the temperature difference between return and discharge air. This was extremely helpful. There were times I was worried when testing the equipment without using this special testing section... things would work and then they wouldn't. Another rookie mistake on my part. The thermostat won't allow the A/C system to turn on then off and then on again in rapid sequence... that's to protect the equipment from rapid cycling. But that was also causing me to worry something had gone wrong when I couldn't fire things right back up. However, if you use the installer test section, the delay is bypassed and you can turn things on and off as necessary to check it all out.

Soooo.... I'm very pleased with this system. It ain't cheap, it ain't uncomplicated, and it ain't for the timid. But with some patience and skepticism of what technicians have done to your system in the past, you can get it all up and running and when you do, it's really, really good.

This thermostat is a life saver as well as a money saver. We needed this thermostat for its remote sensing device. I have a two story house but only one zone heating and cooling. Our thermostat is located downstairs in a far corner of the house that is always cooler than the rest of the house. This makes it very difficult to keep a consistent heating temperature at night. Our upstairs would easily be 88 degrees at 4 am while the heater was trying to keep the downstairs at a mere 67 degrees. The remote sensing device can be taken anywhere in the house. With one touch of the button it can be told to sense temperature from its location. We do this every night to keep our bedrooms comfortable. We are now able to sleep again at night. Plus the downstairs doesn't get too cold either as the heat still falls. Great option to have. On top of all that, the setup is easy. It walks you through every possible option for setting up your schedules. The display looks great and the touchscreen is very responsive.

I am very happy with this thermostat. I replaced an existing 5 wire. I have 2 separate furnaces/AC that are single stage. I was intimidated when I saw a list of the installer options. I was worried that I would make a wrong choice or miss something. Not to worry. Once I selected "Conventional", only the options that pertained to my system showed up. It was a very quick and easy walk through the options. Make sure you shut the power off. Wire it up and off you go. I did have a worried moment when I was attaching the thermostat to the base. I clicked it in at the bottom and then tried to get the top to click in. It wasn't going. I was worried that if I pushed too hard I was going to break it. I had to push pretty hard but it clicked in.

I was up late that night and noticed that the upstairs display had turned to this faded out color and all the numbers were black instead of white. OMG, what did I do wrong? I pushed on the touch screen and it changed back to that beautiful blue. I went down and looked at the other thermostat and it was the same way. Looked in the manual and in the troubleshooting section, found out that it changes at 2AM for 1 hour to prevent burn in of the screen. WHEW!

I bought this thermostat because of the remote unit. It did not disappoint. If you can afford the extra bucks and you need the remote, it's a no brainer. I think it is worth it just for the display. Classy. So easy to use and program. No regrets.

With all the hype Nest thermostats are getting I was a little reluctant to get this one. But I have to admit that especially with the Remote Sensor and Portable Remote control I am extremely happy with my purchase of the 2.0 kit. Its also nice that I can build more off of this kit. ie remote access. The only down side is that its a night light. I would prefer that the screen would turn off when inactive. But on the other end I can see from across the room what temperature the house is at any time. Oh and being a consumer (not knowing all the differences and details of versions) I had to return my original order for the 2.0 IAQ version so that it would work with my Air Exchanger and Humidifier.

We tried the Nest, but it wasn't good for us. It allows too much of a temperature swing. The Honeywell is extremely good at keeping the temperature consistent, and the ability to move the remote around as a thermostat is perfect for keeping the baby's room at the right temperature. Now we just set it and forget it. No more fiddling.

For quite awhile I've had a Honeywell programmable thermostat, but it wouldn't allow me to set the the temp span. It had a 1 deg span (1/2 deg down and 1/2 deg up) and it looked like it was stuck on one temp (I'm old fashion: I like setting my thermostat manually so I couldn't tell if the furnace had just went off or if it was ready to turn on again, it just stayed on one temp). So a while back I bought a Hunter thermostat just like this one, so that I could set the temp span on it and I really liked it, but it didn't have a back light. Needless to say, its a pain in the A$$ trying to set a temp on a thermostat at night without a back light and now my pain is gone because this Hunter does have a back light, so a lesson learned: before buying a thermostat always make sure it has a back light (in my defense, I guess I was looking too hard at the temp span aspect and over looked the light aspect). I guess it telling that I like this thermostat if I'll spend the extra money just to get a light.

Note: Sorry, I can't comment on the programmable aspect of the thermostat, because even though I have the skills, I'm just old fashion and I haven't use the programmable part of this thermostat

Pros: Easy to install, compact footprint, snaps off mount for easy access when programming, blue backlight screen.

Cons: Changes temperature setting outside it's programmed schedule, very small print on display, somewhat complicated to operate (for a thermostat!)

I bought two units, both "malfunctioned" in the same way I set "Asleep" time to end at 6am (heat was programmed to 55 degrees for Asleep time) but the thermostat changed to "At Home" heat temperature setting (62 degrees) at 5:20am!! I verified several times that I had set it up correctly. I even changed the "Asleep" schedule period to 7am, then the thermostat changed to the "At Home" temperature at 6:30am, while still displaying that it was in the "Asleep" period.

Soleus Powered By Gree 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

Under normal conditions, our house can handle what most people consider extreme heat. It was built a hundred years ago, and the basic design and the many large windows keep us comfortable while those around us are frantically running up their electric bills.

Last summer was a major exception. The heat index was up over 124 degrees all day long. The air was so super-heated, it was like trying to draw a breath in a blast furnace. Even the nights were blisteringly hot.

Ordinary air conditioners were not the answer. The windows were not made for it, and cutting through a wall wasn't an option. It didn't leave many alternatives; we had to do SOMETHING. We quickly researched the possibilities, evaluated the most likely candidates, and decided to try the little Soleus portable.

The instructions were remarkably clear and understandable (always a good sign,) and assembling the hose was a no-brainer. It went together quickly and without incident. The only delay putting it into use came from the need to allow the refrigerant to settle before turning it on.

At 10,000 BTU, we didn't expect it to cool more than one room, so we set it up in the kitchen, sealed off the doorway with plastic sheeting to contain the cool air, and fired it up. The heat index outside was well into the life-threatening range, but within a matter of minutes, the kitchen was freezing! We had to turn it down. We made it through an impossible day in absolute comfort.

The next day was no cooler, so we headed for the kitchen, again, this time without the plastic sheeting. Over the course of a very dangerous afternoon, we were astonished to find that the little Soleus managed to cool ANOTHER large room, without turning it up any higher than we had before. The entire first floor stayed livable all the while it was running. A series of fans helped keep the air moving in the father reaches, but it was the Soleus that cooled things off.

We got another pleasant surprise when the electric bill arrived. We had run it for several hours a day for the better part of a week, and the bill was about what it always was for that time of the year.

We haven't had to use it this summer, but it's there if it's needed. Storage isn't a problem; it takes up very little floor space in the utility room. It could as easily be stored in a closet. It was a Godsend when we needed it the most. We couldn't be more delighted with this great little air conditioner.

right out of the box worked great. Heated a 34x34 garage in no time at all. only problem the propane tank I was using was frozen. Temp in the garage before the heater was -5 after it was 50.

This is a FANTASTIC heater but there are some things a new buyer should be aware of. It'll bring a 30x60x12 garage from 0 to 60 in about an hour and a half. However you really do need a 100 lb tank. You can get away with a 40 or 50 lb heating a smaller area on low otherwise the tanks will condense and shut off the gas flow to the heater. They are louder than you'd expect if you haven't used one of these before because of the blower fan. Think mini jet. I've also used the convection style heaters and depending on your needs these are both great. The convection style is much quieter but takes a fair bit longer to heat a large space and you won't get as even a heat in the room. For larger spaces or fast heat up the forced air heater is an awesome product.Mr. Heater MH125FAV 125,000-BTU Forced-Air Propane HeaterMr. Heater 80,000 BTU Propane Convection Heater #MH80CV

I'm in the process of insulating and paneling a 12x30 portable building to be used as a workshop. During the winter it get's a bit cold here. I got this hoping it would heat the building enough to work comfortably. I couldn't. Kept having to turn it off after every 15 minutes of run time and wait 45 minutes to an hour before needing it again. That's a lot of heat from a device that's slightly larger than ones thigh. It uses very little propane for a LOT of heat. I heartily recommend it.

This is a great basic model thermostat by honeywell. It has a nice clear easy to read display and simple controlls and adjustments. great to replace those old dial or slide thermostats. Great for the workshop. But, in my home, i have the programable version of this thermostat, looks identical to this, and simple to use, and it only cost around $10 more on average than this model.

This is junk. The batteries don't quite fit right, so I continually have to jiggle the batteries to get it to go on...this was after replacing the batteries with new ones several times until I realized it had nothing to do with the batteries, but the poor make of the unit. THEN...tonight was the final straw. Sometimes, it will take a long time to turn on, or will turn off before it gets to the desired heat. Tonight I came home, and although I had the heat set to 70, it never stopped running. When I came home it was 94 degrees in my house! Thank God my dogs had plenty of water because my house was an oven. I have to wonder if I had stayed out later, just how high the temperature would have gotten in my home. I am replacing this with a better one tomorrow, the savings just isn't worth it and now I can't imagine what my electrical bill will be like!

BUT, to access the controls that allow you to switch from A/C to Heat, you have to remove the plastic face-plate and this is NOT easy to do. It tends to stick, and one could easily pull the whole unit out of the wall. So i recommend removing this cover plate permanently, just leave it off, and you will be fine.

Honest reviews on Honeywell RTH110B Horizontal Digital Manual Thermostat

Everything below the lb sign was my initial review. The unit failed 3 days after installation. I returned it for a refund. Cool no longer functioned, as indicated by previous reviewers. Junk.

Perhaps some specifics instead of "its real good".

I recently installed and tested both heat and A/C for several cycles, without fail. It took longer than 15 min. to install, but not a lot longer. Any mechanically inclined home owner, use to doing home repairs can do this. It does hold the temperature for heat and cool to 1 degree as advertised. For me this is its greatest feature.

The 3rd piece, very top cover, must be removed/lifted to operate the switches. I trimmed the tabs off the lower edge to allow this cover to lift without effort. Else, repeated use would tear the unit from a sheet rock wall anchor, even a plastic insert anchor.

Perhaps, as other users reported long term use will produce variations in temperature control. I find this hard to believe as an ex-engineer, because solid state electronics do not behave this way. They either malfunction right away or they work for the life of the unit.

Now the serious down side that you can live with. The thermometer, on which the unit senses temperature, is fixed at assembly and can not be calibrated. Ours is off by 2 degrees from 3 other thermometers. But the work around is to simply adjust the temperature set points up by 2 degrees, to match real house temperatures. This is annoying, but I bet other inexpensive models have similar or worse flaws. I know that the Lux unit I purchased last year failed its installation tests after 1 cycle.

Installed and lasted 2 winters before fan switch failed.

Worked fine until it failed. Cheaply made. Go for something sturdier.

I replaced the lower heating element in our electric hot water heater, it then worked fine, except it would get so hot it would trip the reset button. I looked at the lower thermostat and it looked like it had gotten too hot, somewhat melted. I ordered this replacement, and followed online instructions, it only took about 10-15 minutes start to finish, and the hot water heater works perfect now. I am very happy to have saved the money by doing it myself. This part fits perfect, seems well made, functions as it is supposed to, and is very reasonably priced.
