Holmes HCH4954-U Whisper Quiet Twin Ceramic Heater Review

I wanted a quiet heater to use in my den in the evening. I watch TV in this room and didn't want a noisy heater that competed with it, forcing me to raise and lower the volume to adjust for a noisy heater fan. This heater is the quietest fan-forced unit I've tried, and I've tried quite a few. The only heaters quieter than this one would be the micathermic or oil-filled models. The micathermic ones only heat up the area directly in front of the panel and not the whole room, and the oil filled heaters take way too long to heat up.

Now for the bad news......the digital thermostat. First off, the settings are in five degree increments, rather than one degree. If I set it for 65 the heater brings the room up to about 68 then shuts off. That's fine, but then the room will drop to 63 or 64 and the heater doesn't come back on. I'm either going to be hot or cold. If I set the unit to 70, after reaching 75 degrees it still runs----totally unacceptable. If Holmes improves the thermostat they would have a decent little heater here. Oh, one other thing. There are two output settings, low and high. They only control fan speed. The heater uses 1500 watts at both settings, unlike most other models.

The heater portion of this unit performs admirably: fast heat generation, quiet fan good for warming small to medium-sized rooms in a short amount of time. The heater does eat a fair amount of current the manual rates it at around 13 to 14 amps, which may be a big deal if you're on a circuit with only a 15 amp breaker. It's also light and compact, so it's easy to carry from one room to another, and doesn't take up much space.

The downside is that some of the fancier features of this unit are unreliable the oscillating base tends to bind and gnash gears, making a loud cracking sound. It also seeps oil from the base. Also, the digital thermostat is inaccurate, and has a tendency to lose calibration over several hours. I've purchased two of these heaters, and I've noticed all three problems with both.

As a space heater, it fits the bill well. But be advised that you may not get full use of the other features that you are paying for.

I want to like this heater, it is so quiet. But, in thermostat mode on low heat, the unit shuts itself off and goes into reset mode, thinking it is overheating. What a shame, all 3 units failed miserably. Thermostat mode works fine on high heat, but I need low heat for a smaller space.

I get headaches from gas-powered wall heaters you usually see in older apartment units. I thought this might be a good deal for my bedroom. While it does the job, my electric bill TRIPLED in a month. This would be better for sparing use at your office or something. Look for a heater that is a little more energy efficient if electricity costs are important to you.

I got this little heater for my desk because I work on the cold side of the building. A couple of other coworkers had this model and were very happy with it, so I decided to try it too.

One deciding factor is that this unit looks good. There are cheaper heaters out there, but they all look like cheesy plastic. Being in a somewhat public area (I don't have my own office) the heater needed to look nice, and this one definitely fits the bill.

More importantly this heater works very well. As soon as you turn it on, you can feel the heat pouring out of it, with no hesitation. My toes are soon toasty and my fingers no longer frozen. Equally important is how quiet it is. On low setting I can't hear it at all, even when it was sitting right next to me! On high setting the fan is audible, but not distractingly so.

An interesting feature is what Holmes calls "Viziheat". Since there are no glowing coils inside this unit, it might be hard to tell if the grill might be hot. When you turn on this heater, the orange stripes appear on the grill as it heats up. You can see these in the product photo here. When the grill has cooled off it fades back to black. The grill seems to be the only thing that gets hot. When the unit is pumping out heat, you can burn yourself on the grill, but the surrounding plastic housing is surprisingly cool to the touch, which makes it easy to adjust its position safely.

My only complaint about this heater is how poorly the enclosed instructions explain how the thermostat works. This unit has what they call "1-touch" for heat settings. There's only one button on this thing and you press to turn it on, and repeatedly to achieve what temperature you want. Sounds easy, right? What's confusing, and what the instructions don't bother to mention, is what it means when the temperatures are lit up in red or green, sometimes both! It has multiple pages of warnings and safety instructions, but not a single word on why I feel no heat at all when a number is lit up in green by itself. I eventually figured it out, but still, a little less "don't touch the grill when it's hot" and more useful information please! It's sad how most companies are so paranoid about getting sued because a few lawsuit-happy idiots were dumb enough to hurt themselves. But anyway, if you're good at figuring out puzzles, you should have no problems deciphering how the heat settings work on this thing. Overall I'm happy with this heater.

I've had this for about 3 weeks now and it's installed in the utility room next to my home office. I already have filtered water distributed throughout my house, so it was a piece of cake to add another tee and take a line into the water cooler. I had to go to the hardware store to get the parts I needed for that, but once I had them it took me all of about 10 minutes to hook this up. It does make a little bit of a hum when it's on, but it is extremely quiet (at least relative to the room I have it in).

With a reverse osmosis filter on this the water tastes fantastic; it takes about 30 minutes for it to cool the water down, a little less to heat up the hot water side (which by the way has to be turned on before it works -I didn't see the switch at first, so it didn't work until I flipped it).

I wish I'd purchased this sooner; it's fantastic to have a good source of cool (very cold, but not quite cold enough to be uncomfortable to drink) water in my office; I'm drinking 2 or 3 times as much as I had been.

Also, I should mention that the unit came in two boxes, which surprised me; the first had the cooler itself but it was configured to accept a giant water bottle, and the second had a replacement top for it that accepts water from a hose. That was a little confusing at first, but it only took me a few minutes to get it changed, and it's nice to know that I could use it with water bottles if I needed to.

The machine is kind of easy to setup, though it took me a while to figure out. The instructions are kind of worthless. On my first attempt I hooked up the water source to the cleaning drain, which resulted in the machine overfilling and spilling water everywhere. There is a plastic tube that you're supposed to hook the water up to.

Only other complaint is that it's a bit louder than I'd expect. The water is a good temperature though, so I'm happy with it.

I just placed an order for the Clover D7A Hot and Cold Point of Use Water Dispenser in Black.

I called to ask questions before I ordered and the lady I spoke to in Sales was very helpful.

I was confused about the difference between two models and she helped clarify that question.

I also asked about whether or not you need a professional to come install it as mentioned by one of the reviews on their website but found out if we already have the hook ups, then it shouldn't be a problem. When I asked about the instructions being hard to read due to the amount of times it has been copied, she said that if there were any issues with the instructions that they could get customers connected to the vendor.

I've been looking for something like this dispenser to replace the broken one in our breakroom. I was having trouble finding one like it (and even went to Ktown in LA to look for it) and am glad Air-N-Water carry it.

So 5 stars for the customer service thus far and I'll update my review shortly when we get the product.

I bought this heater to go under my desk at work. While the turn knob is simple and is suppose to allow various settings, I have not had the experience of enjoying any settings. The heater shuts off within a minute. It doesn't matter what temperature I set it at. It will not go back on unless I unplug the heater and let it sit for 5 min. I think my co-workers have seen me under my desk fidgeting with the heater more than actually up at my desk doing work. I will definitely be returning it.

Bought this unit last week to put next to my desk at work, but I haven't been completely happy with it.

The heater turns on and heats up instantly, but it is more like an open oven door than a space heater. The heat is there, but the fan in the unit doesn't have much blowing power... so you end up with heat for 1 or 2 feet in front of the unit but not 4 or 5 feet in front of the unit. I had it under my desk today and couldn't figure out where the heat was going... it sure wasn't circulating around anywhere.

The unit does put off a lot of heat... unfortunately I couldn't find a happy medium between cooked ankles and cold ankles.

I like the simple temp knob on top, but I end up leaning over to turn it up and down all day as I get cold and hot.

If I were shopping again I would get a unit with more than one level of heat, more than one fan speed, and an on/off switch so I don't have to unplug it every day.

i am a person that listens to reviews very frequently when buying online, unfortunatly i had the misfortune to buy this is the store and go along with advertising!

i also use heaters a lot! not that i go through them, but i have one in each room i frequent! i hate hate hate hate the cold! i can't stand it!

this is a deplorable product!

-the product is loud, so loud it distracts you from what ever you are doing! work, writing, reading, talking, peace and quite, or hanging out! so quite, just a loud repeated deep whirring noise that goes on forever!

-the heater might as well have one setting of heat! no difference and no change! want it a little cooler? WELL TOO BAD! sorry no can do!

-in reference to the last point, the timer for the heater goes off in what feels like an instant! there you are with the heater at a slightly unreasonable distance so you can feel the heat, but no burn your self, and it just turns it self off! then it takes an extraordinary amount of time to turn itself back on! so you are freezing your butt of waiting for it to heat up again! might as well not have a heater!

-the little trey/base it is on lets you adjust its aim to face higher, which would be nice if you were a super small being! it raises the heater about half an inch, which makes no difference! so there i am in the kitchen (i have the heater just outside of the kitchen door, but i stand near it) with my legs on fire and top half from the thigh up freezing cold! what is the point?

-oh and i know they tell you this, but i am just saying it because i had a close call! watch out or it will burn you!

I read a lot of review about this product before I made my purchase. What I noticed on a pretty consistent basis is that the people who posted really negative reviews were people who don't actually have one because they think the heaters are too expensive. Lets' settle this up front, these heaters are expensive so if you're looking for a bargain then this heater is not for you. If, however, you're looking for a stylish way to heat your home or maybe just an individual room then I think this heater is a great. I am completely satisfied with my heaters. I have 2 of them, one for my bedroom and one for the living room, dinning room, kitchen area. The total square footage of my house is just shy of 1,000sq ft.

The heaters have kept my house an nice and even 67 degrees (my preferred temperature) without any noticeable fluctuations in temperature. I live in Ketchikan, Alaska, which is in the middle of a temperate rain forest. This means that we don't get the extreme cold temperatures here, but it certainly is not "warm" very frequently. I chose to go with electric heaters because electricity is much cheaper than oil where live and natural gas is not an option. I tried the cheap space heaters that people keep saying "will heat your house just as well as they Dyson for 10% of the cost", and I can tell you that they certainly do not maintain a consistent temperature the way that these heaters do. I saw that some people have complained that they're a little big "loud", but I don't really think so. After a few days I really didn't even notice when the heater was running anymore. I guess I expected that the heaters would make a little bit of noise since they're also fans and I've never had a fan that didn't make some noise. Overall I'm very satisfied with the performance of the heater. It does what I expected it to do, which is heat one 500 sq ft area in my house, and heat my bedroom which is about 300 sq ft.

So the real question is "is this heater worth the money"? To me, I say absolutely. They do what I want them to do, and they look awesome. I'm willing to pay extra to get something more than just utility out of a device. Are there no cheaper "safe" heaters, no other cheaper heaters that will heat just as well, of course not. There are lots of other heaters out there, and if you're getting this heater because you think somehow it's gonna magically heat your house better for less money, then you're going to be disappointed. If you are going to buy heaters anyway and don't mind paying a little extra for heaters that look cool, then go ahead an purchase this heater. I did, and I don't regret it. I liken purchasing this device to purchasing a Bose audio device. You'll have to put up with listening to people tell you about how you "overpaid for a name brand", but in the end, most people who have Bose audio systems are very happy with them. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with paying a little more for something you'll be happy with if you can afford it. So these aren't a bargain, but they are fun.

I'll start with a little scene setting: When the idiots who previously owned my 1914 farmhouse a long, long time ago turned the attic into a master bedroom (guest room and bathroom too), they didn't run the heat vents to the master. Because of this, I turn the house heat off at night unless we have guests. They installed a chintzy little built-in electric heater in the wall. The bedroom is 400 square feet with ceilings 25 feet high in center to 12 feet at the edge. The wall heater scares me. I've made it through four winters just fine, only occasionally needing a second blanket. Obviously we have good insulation, seals around the door to the widow's walk, and good windows (I keep one cracked at all times tho). Then I had surgery in early January and was forced to lounge around in bed all day. My SO stayed home to take care of me. In order to heat the bedroom to a comfortable level, the heat downstairs needed to turned on really, really high.

In checking out solutions, I discovered the Dyson hot was a fan as well. I was sold, having fallen in love with fans at my friends homes on hot, hot days last summer. Also since the heat comes from the center of a void, my dog won't interested. They have been known to sniff the vent front on a fan and that part heats up with a space heater. Also dog hair collects on traditional fans (and therefore heat fans). Pugs shed a lot, but with the Dyson Hot, the fur stays on the ground. But everyone was sold out of them, and the company selling on Amazon was marked up $50 over the $399 price tag. On a post-doctor appt. trip to Bed, Bath & Beyond to buy throw pillows to elevate my arm, I saw the Dyson Hot in white was $100 off (blue sold out, but I was in too much pain to care about the color).

After reading reviews, I did not know what to expect. We set it up in the middle of the room on the floor at an angle from the wall, so it would oscillate past the bed (its a platform so low to ground) and I turned it on at 68 degrees fan level 2. I was freezing. It took maybe 5 minutes for me to stop freezing. I didn't really pay attention to it and went about lounging around uncomfortably in bed. I heard it going on and off. It's not loud, but it does sound like a fan. Obviously the higher fan speeds means more noise, but not loud enough to say have to turn the tv off or wake me up.

When my SO came to check on me he commented how the room felt really warm with a noticeable temperature difference between hallway and bedroom. Warm and happy, I turned the fan off for a while and turned it on as needed throughout the last few weeks.

Basic Observations:

1. On Oscillation mode it heats up a 400 square foot room to a comfortable temperature. I am not a person who thinks a room needs to be 80 degrees--more like between 68 to 72. With my arm in a crazy contraption, I can only wear tank tops and the like, so I'm not bundled up. The Dyson Hot keeps At night, I put the Dyson Hot on 66 and eventually turn it off when I get too warm under covers. It heats a decent size room quickly AND COMFORTABLY.

2. On fan speed 2, you can feel the heat from about 10 feet away. It's not a hard blast pf hot, but a warm breeze as it moves by you. 10 feet is where my head sits if its on edge of bed. I didn't test further distances. I also didn't test the stationary mode.

3. It's sitting on hardwood floor. It's not wobbly and it doesn't heat up on the plug or base. The dogs sniff around it a bit, but haven't burnt themselves, although the inside has a warning it gets hot. I didn't touch it. But most importantly, it's sturdy. I've used oscillating heaters in the past (at work) and they always wobbled and would fall easily.

4. Through our really bad winter storms last week, it survived a couple brown outs. It also kept me warm.

5. It has both the thermostat and the fan speed. Much more control than the usual low, medium, high. The thermostat is on the base pointing out instead of on top, so you can actually see it when using remote.

6. I've used the fan a couple times and it offers a nice cool breeze throughout the room.

7. It's not whisper quiet, but than neither was the $150 whisper quiet space heater I had at work.

it is the same audible level as the Dyson fan.

Cons:

1. Moving between the heater and fan is clunky, requiring you to lower the temperature to 32 to turn on fan and up too 66 to turn on heater. I would have liked a button to switch.

2. The remote is supposedly magnetic with the top of the fan. Mine is not as far as I can tell. I keep the remote on the nightstand so not really a problem.

3. No timer. Not necessary, but would be a nice feature.

So yes it's expensive, but if you don't have the money for it, than don't complain about the price just don't buy it. I don't see that as a con. I am willing to pay extra for a safe, reliable room heater that also has a great fan. All of the ones I've used or seen at friends houses have always sucked or are scary like the one stuck in my wall. And not all of those are that cheap anyway. It's not going to substitute for an actual heater in the house, but its an excellent option to add extra heat to a single room.

Update: now that I'm not on bed rest, my SO has been using the Dyson hot. He's more of a crank it up until the room is an oven, he puts it on 86 or so and leaves it on for a while. It really does crank the heat. This thing is warm!

Update 2: After two months of continuous use between January 20 and March 20, 2012 in the cold, cold Seattle Winter including snow (no other heater in bedroom), my bill was $13 more in 2012 than in 2011. So it seems pretty energy efficient.

I bought this product because it was not just a heater it is both a heater and a fan. This product works and works well. We have a large second floor bedroom that gets cooler in the winter than the other areas of the house. We have already had temps of 38 at night and by setting this heater at 72 with the swivel turned on and tilted up warms the room very quickly and then stops while the thermostat waits for the temp to drop. So I do not have to adjust the furnace to compensate for this bedroom. The remote control is extremely simple to use and the read-outs on the front are clear and easily readable. I have tried other heating units and this is by far the best.

There are a lot of negative and positive reviews of this heater and very little in between. Here's my take. First, I paid $260 at Costco...at the $400 list price I would have a different level of expectation, but I'm judging based on what I paid.

It's quiet as fans go...I found it to be a very reasonable sound level. It warms our upstairs nicely (we have a wood stove to heat downstairs...I'm not heating a 1000 square foot detached garage, so I don't know if it's up to that job). The rotating and tilt features are great for our needs to spread the heat around upstairs from the hallway. Controls, remote are all nice, easy to use. It's very small so you would have to practically get on your knees to hit the controls, but the remote eliminates the need for that. The compact cylindrical shape makes it easy to place in small areas. It produces a decent jet of warm air...almost a tube shaped flow.

The exposed surface (inside the ring) does get very warm, BUT not what I'd call dangerously hot. I have a 4 and a 6 year old. If they tried to hold on to the surface as long as they could they might be able to burn themselves, but when I touched it it slowly got more uncomfortable...I pulled my hand away after about 5-10 seconds, unharmed. So I think the kids would feel hot enough that they would pull their hands away well before they got burned. Same for a inquisitive pet sniffing around. With a toddler my concern wouldn't be so much getting burned but knocking it down. I think one could place it outside a baby/toddler room and let it shoot the jet of heat through a gate (leaving 3 ft between the unit and the gate).

It has overheat and tilt safety which I like, although I think the safety shut off for the tilt should kick in a lot sooner...I have a cheap heater that shuts off at about 10 degrees. The Dyson seems to have to be 80 degrees or so...could be a problem if it falls partially on to something and remains on, leaning against it (like a pile of clothes). That should be improved.

Like most of these heaters the cord is only 6 ft so it does make it hard to place (because extension cords are not supposed to be used).

I recommend it enough that I wanted to write this to counter some of the negative reviews.

I chose this because Dyson products have an extremely good reputation. I have one of their vacuums and it's great. This heater is so nice--really heats a room but slowly and keeps it at an even temp. Quiet---no sign of fire or flame or hot tubes. Doesn't use a ton of electricity. So very pleased!!!

This thermostat works great with my heat pump (2 heat / 1 cool). The display is bright and easy to read, and it was easy enough to install (once discovering how my kooky heat pump unit was actually wired). Initial setup required cracking open the manual but setting up the cooling schedule for the days of the week was very straightforward. One of my favorite features is the ability to "dumb down" the model. For instance, I only need two settings per day, not four which is the default. So setting it to two made it quicker and easier to program. Also, there appears to be an option to have one setting for all days of the week (m-f) and then individual settings for saturday and sunday (5-1-1) so that you don't have to worry with individually programming the week days. I'm not using this option but when I reprogram for heat I might turn that on. It's great to have the option to use the full capabilities or only a subset.

I like to sleep in the cold, but I want to wake up to a toasty house. I want to never have to switch my thermostat from AC-Heat (which I previously might have to do a couple of times each day in the spring and fall).

I don't want to think about the temperature in my house, I just want to be comfortable all of the time... now i can! I love it!!!

4) Adjusts Daylight savings time on it's own (even after Bush changed the dates).

6) Should save energy during the day if you program it to.. maybe it will pay for itsself one day!

CONS:

1) Wiring was convoluded in my opinion, but I had no experience doing this. it didn't clearly point out what wires are "optional or may not be necessary for some units" and I was concerned when only 1/2 the holes had wires in them when I was done(learning curve for me).. but it worked just fine after the first attempt. To be fare, all of the online help that I found failed to point out that only some of the wires were required also.

2) Initial setup is all in code and takes some thought definetly requeires the manual.

I'm an HVAC technician and the company i work for uses these quite often. I have one in my home and love it as it's fully prog. 4 windows, auto changeover and can be configured exactly how you need/want it. Works great for two stage systems with 2c/3h and has a lot of advanced options you wouldn't think a stat would have. This is about as good as it gets from a tstat, only thing that's close in my book is the lennox cs7000 + icomfort stats which are brand new.

Thermostat was mounted at the location of the prior thermostat (which had two wires) and required running additional wiring from the furnace. Never had trouble reading the old thermostat, but this one seems to have directional glass--easy to read straight on or from above, but the numbers disappear if your line of sight is from below (even a couple of inches). My husband agreed--he couldn't read the display when he bent his knees and looked upward. Lowering the mounting would mean making a new hole in the drywall and patching the old 2-3" hole. Surprisingly, the display can be read easily from below with a flashlight. The beam of light causes the blue color (which is a dim blue, not the nasty bright blue shown in the photos) to gray out and appear a clear black on gray. Display aside, the thermostat seems effective at regulating the furnace. I'll just have to make like a ballerina, en pointe, to adjust/read it, or bring a flashlight.

I installed one of these about 6 months ago, and it's really worked well.

I was really impressed with the "cool savings" feature that automatically / slightly bumps up the set point when the a/c unit has been running long cycles if the a/c has been running for an hour, 1/2 a degree higher temp still feels nice, since the a/c unit has pulled the humidity from the air, so no reason to keep running the unit. The "cool savings" feature is adjustable, so you can control how much it lets the temperature swing.

I also really like the outdoor thermostat it's about a $20 add-on, but it's just nice to know exactly what you're up against when checking the unit.

Plus, the blue color is impressive. Shallow, silly, whatever people notice this thermostat!. Truthfully, if I was selling a house with an old hvac unit, I'd install one of these, because people seem to think the thermostat IS the hvac unit!

The only disadvantage is the lack of "off the wall" or usb-type programming. One of the Honeywell units has it, but costs twice as much. Even if I could just pop it off the wall, and sit in my recliner to program it would be a nice feature, but at this price, for as often as the programming really needs to be changed, I'll happily live with it.

I have a two wire system that was using an older thermostat that was not digital. My old thermostat wasn't clearly labeled and so it was hard to know what temp I was actually setting it on. This one works perfectly with my two wire system (although I do have to run it off the batteries) and it very accurately sets the temperature and reflects the current temp. I've compared it to another temp gauge I have and, like I said, it's accurate.

My search concluded when I found these. They look fantastic, are reasonably priced, and offer some nice features. I purchased four and had them installed in no time.

I love the room temperature display on the outside (now I know how cold I'm really letting it get in my place before turning on the heat), and the ability to set temperature exactly where I want it now. If this heater wasn't a bit noisy, I would give it 5 stars. It heated up my room within a few minutes, even with the door ajar. Both the main unit and the remote are easy to use; there is even a hook on the back of the unit to hang the remote, so it's not misplaced. I like the fact that it heats the air, not a specific object, so that I do not become over-heated. In addition, the unit is light-weight, but sturdy and thus not likely to get knocked over. If I need another space heater, I'll purchase a second one.

I put this over the a/c thermostat at work, and it fits good. A little big, but it does the trick. Had a hard time mounting it on the wall, so we just ended up using double sided tape, and that did the trick and you cant even tell!

Why is it most (not ICS) thermostat manufacturers have to make product information so confusing? My old thermostat was located in a hall way in the front of our house. When it ran the heat or AC the front of our house would get nice and warm or cool while we sat in the back of the house sweating or cold. We needed a thermostat that would sense the temperature from a remote location, and also be adjustable from the same remote location. This is exactly what this thermostat doesthe reciever unit mounts where your old hard wired thermostat went, and the remote blue screened transmitter unit you can put anywhere in your house and it will sense the temperature from there sending the data wirelessly to the reciever. Installation was a snap. The installation video they have on their website is really cool. I mounted my transmitter on a wooden base which I can move to my back bedroom or any other room we might be using, it can also be wall mounted.

Sorry but I have to rant about Totaline and Honeywell. I found their websites to be very pretty but completely uninformative about exactly how their wireless thermostats work. They seem to have remote temperature sensors which can be mounted various places in your house but to change temperature you still need to go to the reciever unit mounted where your old original thermostat was, not real convenient. Honeywell had some kind of convenience remote control unit but it only changed certain settings. Most of the sensors and recievers were sold a la cart and I never did figure out what combination of devices I would need. It apperared the cost would be $300-$1000 just for the parts. Niether site has a customer service phone#, all I could find were some PDF's explaining to the professional installer how to calculate his profit margin! Wow. This is a classic example of a relatively simple job that most homeowners can install themselves and Honeywell and Totaline want to make it seem so complicated that you need to go hire a professional installer. Forget it.

I installed my ICS TS820 Wireless thermostat about 3 months ago in about an hour, and I really took my time to make sure I was hooking up the wires right. The transmitter is still on the 1st set of batteries and going strong. so far the unit has worked flawlessly. Finally we can be comfortable in any room in the house. The controls are so intuitive I didn't even have to read the manualThanks ICS. My old Totaline I used to have to get the manual and reading glasses out any time I wanted to make a change.

PROS: Low price. Intuitive controls. Cool blue screen. Easy installation. Programmable for individual settings for each of the 7 days of the week. Copy/paste function. Perfect for houses with standard central AC and heat. Thermostat is very accurate.

CONS: This unit does not have an auto changeover from heat to AC, you can only have either the heat or AC on. I had this feature on my old Totaline but never used it so I don't really consider this a fault, just pointing it out. It would be nice if there was an outside air temp sensor option. It would be nice if the reciever unit at least had a digital readout on it for the temp at the reciever location (It only has indicator lites on it for on, off, etc).

CONCLUSION: Everything considered I would highly recommend this unit. My cons are not really faults, just would be nice's. There are some lower priced wireless thermostats out there but if you read the fine print either they are not programmable or the sensor is hard wired right where your old thermostat went (which in my mind accomplishes nothing). Frankly I don't think there is anything on the market that comes close. Finally we have comfort back in our house.

I feel very fortunate to have returned this item. It turns out that as a consequence of having some reception problems in my home, I found this product has some serious design flaws that could end up costing someone a lot in wasted energy.

Here's the main problem. The device has all the sensing and smarts on only the remote unit. The base unit that controls your heater or AC only listens to that remote and if it doesn't get any new commands, it just keeps doing whatever it was doing last. That means if there is any interruption or failure in communications, your heater or air conditioning could remain on for a long long time.

Here's how I came to realize this problem. I was testing the unit in my home after I first installed it. I found that it didn't seem to have the range to work in the room where I needed it. So, I tested the range in the hallway where there would be clear line-of-sight between transmitter and receiver. Even there, I could only get it to work at a range of about 10 feet. (After I returned it, the folks at ICS claim to have tested it to work at a much longer range, so maybe there was some interference or something in my house.) Anyway, at this limiting range, the remote unit was able to turn on my AC unit, but then it never switched it off. I bumped the temp setting up and waited about 20 minutes, and still nothing happened. Finally, I brought the remote unit closer to the base unit, and it switched off.

Imagine now that you are away on vacation and the battery of the remote unit gets a bit low. Maybe a signal is strong enough to turn on the heat but then nothing else gets through to your base unit. Next thing you know, you get home and your house is like a sauna and your heater has been running nonstop for days. This didn't happen to me, but it seems it could with this design.

My recommendation would be to avoid this model and go for one that has a temperature sensor in both the base unit and the remote. Also, the main control should be in the base unit and not in the remote sensor. There are a few out there that do this. They may cost a little more, but I would think in the long-run they are worth it. After sending mine back, I purchased one from White Rodgers. In my opinion, these guys got it right.

There are a few other problems with the TS830 that are worth noting. First, the touch screen display is rather low contrast and the back-light is dim. Matters are made even worse because the screen easily gets smudged when you touch it. It has a special mode where you can clean it without activating any commands, but who wants to always have to clean their thermostat display? Like I said earlier, I also had problems with the communications range on the unit. I have experienced no such problems with my White-Rodgers unit White Rodgers 1F85RF-275 80 Series Wireless Remote Sensor Kit.

In summary, while I'm out shipping costs for the round trip, I still consider myself lucky. I ended up avoiding future headaches. I'm very pleased with the White-Rodgers unit I purchased instead of this one.

20% of the time it would hang either on or off. Running the thermostat through the manual setpoint mode would usually free it up and it would go back into normal operation. This makes me think the receiver was in range (30 ft. line of sight) but somehow missed the change output signal. The receiver should send a confirming signal back to the transmitter and if it fails, the switch output state signal should be re-transmitted. I got the feeling this was a open loop one way system. It would also loose communication completely and the whole system would need to be powered down and reset. At that point we decided to return it. Amazon return policies are great. UPS picked it up at our home the next day and our account was credited 3 days later. We used this remote thermostat to control a Harman P-43 pellet stove at the far end of our small ranch style house. When it worked it worked very well.

I have spent a considerable amount time looking for a solution to relocate one of our old thermostats and ended up buying this unit. I had it over a year now and it works great! The interface is straight forward nothing complex. Programing it is a bit of a pain, but I did it once and never had to do it again. Most importantly our baseboard heating system is about 150ft and a floor away from the control unit and the wireless works without issues!!! The design saved me lot's of time I would otherwise had to spend running control wires in the walls to relocate the old thermostat. I would buy this unit again, no questions! The only reason I knocked off a star was due to the complicated initial programming, but for most that will be a one-time event.

This product was exactly what I needed. My original thermostat was right next to the washer / dryer and involved heating / cooling the entire floor in order to cool the bedroom where we spend our time. I closed the other vents but that was still a lot of wasted energy, so I picked this up to go to in the bedroom. Install was a breeze, it took probably 10 minutes to get everything mounted. Programming took about 15 minutes (I was confused how the copy function worked), and then I was running my bedroom at a reasonable temperature w/o cooling the entire floor. All told, under an hour to replace and be fully operational. The temporary / quick adjust temperatures is very easy to figure out and it received the girlfriend seal of comprehension

Issues All of these are quite picky and more notes so that you know you're not the only one w/ the issue.

Holding the settings button in the top right for (5) seconds is difficult. The touch screen is finicky about that so it took several minutes to get it to register.

It took me a week to get the LCD unit to snap into place. I kept pushing it back and the last clip wouldnt go and I was afraid I'd break it. Finally I put a screwdriver behind the base plate to keep it from flexing and it popped right in.

If you touch it at night the LCD is BRIGHT.

Cheap Haier CPN10XCJ 10000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner

Guess I'll go in order of what was important to me when buying my first portable A/C unit.

Cooling: My residence has two large picture windows facing east and I'm on the top floor of the building. It gets blazing hot about 30 days a year here in San Francisco, so my place gets like an oven. So good cooling was critical. (If you are curious, without A/C on the hot days it would get a stifling 80 to 85 degrees in my rooms! Alas, that's the price I pay for having an otherwise full water view of the San Francisco bay, Bay Bridge and east bay foothills. The 15' x 10' windows provide a great view, but they act like magnifying glasses (even with blinds that block the heat, and a fully insulated ceiling). The only benefit of the heat in my place, as the old saying goes, "it is a dry heat." I am thankful for that because I HATE humidity.

I have always used window A/C units, about 5000 to 8000 BTU each, one in the living room, one in the bedroom. (My latest units were small 7000 BTU Panasonics. They work great and I simply figured it was time to replace them, being that they are about 2004 units.) Wanting to update I decided to get a portable unit, first for the bedroom, to see how it would perform.

This Haier unit gets the bedroom ice cold and if I leave the BR door open it cools the next room somewhat. How cool is that? Very. (Note: the BR is about 200 SF.)

Dependability: My Haier unit has been left on 24 hours, without incident. And I have had it for 18 months. I last used it about 8 months ago. When it got hot here a couple days ago I plugged it in, it fired right up and again ran 18 hours without incident. I was the coolest cat in town, literally and figuratively.

Set It and Forget It: I like the controls. I set it to the desired temp, the thermostat works perfect, cycling the cooling on and off according to the temp setting.

Features: While mainly concerned about cooling performance, I did want a unit with a remote, temp settings, thermostat (rather than a high, med, low switch), digital display, and fan speeds. This Haier comes with all these features.

Noise: While I did not want a unit that was super noisy, noise emission was not a critical factor. But I was pleasantly surprised that this Haier unit can operate quiet. Yeah, when the fan is set to full blast it is noisy, but hey, it is an A/C unit. If it is making lots of noise, that's because you are running it full blast. As an indication of noise level, if I have it running full blast and I'm in the next room, I don't notice it. I have to walk into the BR to see if it is on.

Keep in mind, however, an added benefit of the noise is that it acts as a white noise machine. You get used to the sound and it pleasantly drowns out City noise, which here in San Francisco there's a lot of. So when you set it on at night, it is like taking an Ambien. It lulls you to sleep. (It is kind of the same effect as falling asleep when on a jet, or on a train. The noise emissions of those travel modes can put you to sleep, so much so that my noise making machine has "train mode" where it sounds like you are in a train sleeping car., with the hum of the engines and clacking of the wheels on the rails.)

Value: I bought my unit on sale for about $270. What a great deal. I wish I had bought two of these units. Oh well, but I will buy another Haier unit because the Company has proven itself.

Portability: The unit is on wheels and actually quite easy to move around. While the footprint is somewhat large, hey, it is an air conditioner not a stereo. I was not expecting this to be the size of a microwave. In any event, it does roll around with little effort, although once you have this placed where you want (and where the tubing can vent hot air outside through a window) you are not going to be moving it much.

Bonus Tip: I am going to experiment with another one of these and run the exhaust hose up the stove hood. That's because I have a computer area next to the kitchen and there's no window nearby, so when trying to figure out a solution I looked at the kitchen hood. I can remove the fan and run the A/C exhaust tube into the circular fan opening that runs to the roof of the building. Yeah it won't look pretty, but I'd rather feel cool than look it.

Instructions: This was easy to unpack and all I made sure to do was remove all the tape and foam around the unit. So I did have to read the instructions to make sure I did not miss anything. Otherwise, you plug it in and turn it on. It is that simple. Matter of fact I turned it on without the exhaust tube connected to a window. The exhaust air was broiling hot. Kind of silly, one end was blowing ice cold air, the other end blowing air hot enough to cook with. But I wanted to try it out because that's what guys do.

Bragging Rights: I enjoyed calling my friends who were suffering in the heat, saying "Wow is it cold today or what. Hold on, I have to put on a coat. Oh wait, that's my A/C unit, never mind." (I then heard the phone click. How rude for them to hang up on me. Was it something I said?)

Bonus Tip: If your place is going to get hot later in the day, turn on your A/C BEFORE it gets hot. These A/C units work a lot better if they don't have to cool down an 80 degree room. I'm a lot more comfortable if I don't wait to turn on the Haier until AFTER it feels like an Easy Bake oven in my place.

Bonus Tip: To give this A/C unit a little extra circulation (to where it blows air into the next room, not a lot, but some) I place a little portable fan on the table next to this unit. I then run the fan on high. This adds about 1/3 more power to blow and circulate the cool air around.

I bought this portable air conditioner for my apartment after temperatures in my area reached 100+ degrees because my fan just wasnt cutting it and wow what a wonderful little unit. It is a medium sized air conditioner, kind of heavy but has wheels to move around, comes with the exhaust and a kit to hook it up to a window which can adjust to most window sizes for both horizontally and verticall. It's pretty quiet compared to most air conditioners and even though my room is a decent size with high ceilings it'll make the whole room cool within minutes. It has an adjustable thermostat and also has heating and dehumidifying capabilities and works as a fan also if you dont need the cooling. Great GREAT product, if you're in the market for a portable air conditioner, this is THE ONE.

I purchased this 10,000 btu unit after reading over 50 reviews on Amazon and Walmart. I could not go bigger as this unit is 115 volt and plugs into a normal electric outlet while the 12,000 btu unit requires a 20 amp dedicated fuse and outlet. Haier states the unit is for a small room, i.e. 300 sq. ft. area max.

I believe the manufacturer is reading reviews, too. My 2012 version has an unlighted circuit-breaker plug and the bright blue front panel turns itself off after a few seconds. (The light from the LED's bothered people who installed the unit in the bedroom.

One sets the thermostat to the desired temperature and picks the fan speed. There is also a timer function. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are three fan speeds and the unit continues to run whether the compressor is working or not. Since it is dehumidifying when the compressor isn't on, I don't mind the continual fan.

The remote has large buttons and the same functions as the unit.

I would like to mention that the exhaust pipe heats up fairly significantly when it is cooling. So, cold air is coming out the front but the exhaust vent pipe is reducing efficiency. I may insulate the vent piping on principle.

Also, there is a knob on the back that says "closed/open" that does not appear in the instruction manual. I have not tried to go to the manufacturer's site to read up-to-date specifications.
