I purchased the Aprilaire 700 to replace the model 110 that quit working after 15 years. Several reviews said this was a good choice so I thought I'd give it a try.

Everything arrived in one box and the instructions were very clear. Since I was replacing an older power model, the wiring was already done for me but it looked easy enough. I did replace the water supply line which came with the new humidifier and had to cut a larger hole in the plenum and smaller hole in the return air supply for the humidistat.

In all, it took me about 2 hours to cut and fit the new one in. I did't use the outdoor temp. sensor because I prefer to use a manual setting. The unit has been operating flawlessly for a couple of months and the humidity in my house has risen to where it's much more comfortable. I'd recommend this unit.

We had an Aprilaire 700 system installed professionally, but the solenoid broke after two years. (the solenoid controls the water flow from your plumbing into the unit). This is the most powerful system Aprilaire makes, and was recommended for our house by the ARS professionals that installed it. The system never got our humidity over 30%, but in fact we have hardwood floors in about 1/6 of our house and lots of wood furniture, and about 3500 sq ft of floor space. The unit seems better suited for houses without much wood (floors and/or furniture) and certainly less than 3500 sq ft. Suitability aside, I'm not happy the solenoid, which is over $200 to replace/install, broke after less than two years. Unfortunately, we got only 1 year parts/labor on the unit.

We purchased the 700 in 2004 and it has been nothing but a headache for us. The first two years the water panel wouldn't stay wet. The installer blamed it on the saddle attachement to the water pipe. He came out and cleaned the saddle and claimed it worked but we never had anything but dry air. About 2007 we had someone come out and tell us the panel holder doesn't distribute the water well and they came out with a new version that has fabric in it. Bought that and it helped for a year and the fabric came loose and had to buy another. (in addition to replacing the panel each season). Finally last year we had someone install a real valve to replace the saddle. Then this unit started pouring water all over the floor. Apparently the low-flowing saddle was masking other problems. Some low-flow, inlined device was broken. (read $.01 piece of plastic) I ordered a new hose for it and put it in. The new hose was so stiff that part of it broke on trying to install it. Duct tape helped hold it in place. Turn on the water and NOTHING... back to no water again and a dry panel = dry house. Generally this unit has me running to the furnace room every day since we owned it. It has never worked right despite having 3 different companies come out to service it. The general features of this thing that I don't like are:

water panel: I just don't believe that this puts as much water in the air as one could

fan: The fan is outside of the duct work blowing unconditioned air into the duct which is supposed to deliver humid air to the system. But I feel more air coming out than going in and isn't it reducing the heat in the duct by inserting cold basement air?

vent: The vent on this thing is a giant hole in the summer. The unit is off in the summer and the cold air just blows out. One may suggest that I leave this thing on all year and just turn off the water... that would help but the way these are wired is to turn on only when heat is asked for. We keep our house fan on all the time to balance the system and the 700 only comes on when heat is generated. So even in the winter, conditioned air is escaping through this unit.

water delivery: The pipe it goes through is entirely proned for error and anyone with harder water than us will suffer tremendously.

This is probably the worst house purchase we have made since 1998.

Good quality humidifer but requires a 120 VAC outlet so be prepared. Took a few minutes to understand exactly how the rear housing frame mates to the duct opening. Must install the humdifier controller in the return duct upstream from the fresh air intake which required rerouting my fresh air intake. Also installed the Aprilaire Model 8570 Thermostat using a separate 24 VAC transformer. My furnance could not supply enough current from it's 24 VAC humidifier accessory terminal to run the humidifier. Aprilaire recommends not using the accessory terminal when installing the Model 8570 Thermostat so I already purchased the 24 VAC transformer. Pleased with both the 8570 Thermostat and Model 700 Humidifer. Like the ability to monitor outdoor temperature and humidity from the thermostat, and automatically control humidifier operation based on outdoor temperature because I have wooden casement windows. You will need some skills to install this unit.

I got the automatic version of this for $229 w/shipping on another site. It took me an afternoon to install and so far works great. When I turned it on the relative humidity in my house was 25%, this morning I woke up to an "ideal" (given the outside temperature) level of 35%. One thing to consider though when choosing a humidifier is whether your furnace is over-sized for your house. If that is the case then the furnace will not run frequent enough for the humidifier to work (my furnace is pretty much perfectly sized for my home), in which case one of the newer steam units might be a better bet (or you could try hooking this one up to your hot water supply instead of the cold water).

One quick tip with installing it. The temperature sensor can actually be mounted inside the air intake pipe of your furnace (assuming you have a newish direct-vent model). You do need to mount it as close to the outside wall as possible to get an accurate reading but, by drilling a small hole in the pvc pipe and sticking the thermometer in it, you save yourself from having to drill a hole through the outside of your home.

Bought this heater from costco about 1 week ago to heat our 18' x 20' living room, Not only doe's it do that very well, it heats the kitchen, hallway, and closest bedroom to the living room. we are going to purchase another for the rest of the house. Our house heater went out and cant afford a new one, don't need to fix it now. I would definately recommend this heater. we had bought one of those fake fireplace heaters they look great but took it back it didn't work anywhere close to the vorando heater for a fourth of the cost.

I recently purchased this for an office that is about 20' x 10'. When I first turned it on within 5 minutes the whole office area was heated. I had to turn down the heat to a lower heating setting (it has 3 settings) so the office area wasn't overly heated. The safety feature of automatically shutting off if it is moved or tilted is a really great feature. It would be nice if it had a remote control or a thermostat control to set a specific temperature but that shouldn't stop you in purchasing this little heating marvel. You don't need to point this heater directly at you for warmth. It takes the heated air and evenly circulates it throughout the room. I own a Vornado air circulator at home and use it during the hot summer months. It works great....that is why I purchased this product. It is basically the same Vornado air circulator only with a heater inside of it. It gets a 4 1/2 star rating from me...but Amazon ratings don't do 1/2 points.

This is my second Vornado VH110 purchase in 6 months. I have bought electric heaters before from different manufacturers and none of them withstood the normal wear and tear as well as the test of time like these Vornado heaters. Most of the ones I got at the big superstores caught dust in the grill after about 6 months of use and ended up just giving up and dying or even starting to burn the dust and grime inside stinking up the room and causing them to sound like a small airliner is about to land. Needless to say I had to bite the bullet and buy another one, and then another one and so on. A friend turned me onto Vornado heaters. I have to say I have never seen a small size heater heat up my high ceiling room so well, yet it only feels warm to the touch. This thing is quiet and seems to be very efficient it doesn't seem to burn the element inside as hot as the other heaters, and yet circulates the air a lot better then the 2700 watt higher powered heaters sold at Walmart. I am very impressed with the engineering of these little marvels and will recommend these to my friends too.

It is a very nice heater and I love it at first...until the exterior cracked in 30 days. I suspect is the heat that caused the plastic exterior to expand and then crack open. Now there is an rattling piece of plastic inside the heater and I stopped using it. Amazon is replacing it with a new one at no cost since it's about 30 days since I received the item. I can't imagine what Amazon would do if it broke later and I would have lost the moeny I spent on this heater. I just hope the new one will last.

I read a lot of review about this product before I made my purchase. What I noticed on a pretty consistent basis is that the people who posted really negative reviews were people who don't actually have one because they think the heaters are too expensive. Lets' settle this up front, these heaters are expensive so if you're looking for a bargain then this heater is not for you. If, however, you're looking for a stylish way to heat your home or maybe just an individual room then I think this heater is a great. I am completely satisfied with my heaters. I have 2 of them, one for my bedroom and one for the living room, dinning room, kitchen area. The total square footage of my house is just shy of 1,000sq ft.

The heaters have kept my house an nice and even 67 degrees (my preferred temperature) without any noticeable fluctuations in temperature. I live in Ketchikan, Alaska, which is in the middle of a temperate rain forest. This means that we don't get the extreme cold temperatures here, but it certainly is not "warm" very frequently. I chose to go with electric heaters because electricity is much cheaper than oil where live and natural gas is not an option. I tried the cheap space heaters that people keep saying "will heat your house just as well as they Dyson for 10% of the cost", and I can tell you that they certainly do not maintain a consistent temperature the way that these heaters do. I saw that some people have complained that they're a little big "loud", but I don't really think so. After a few days I really didn't even notice when the heater was running anymore. I guess I expected that the heaters would make a little bit of noise since they're also fans and I've never had a fan that didn't make some noise. Overall I'm very satisfied with the performance of the heater. It does what I expected it to do, which is heat one 500 sq ft area in my house, and heat my bedroom which is about 300 sq ft.

So the real question is "is this heater worth the money"? To me, I say absolutely. They do what I want them to do, and they look awesome. I'm willing to pay extra to get something more than just utility out of a device. Are there no cheaper "safe" heaters, no other cheaper heaters that will heat just as well, of course not. There are lots of other heaters out there, and if you're getting this heater because you think somehow it's gonna magically heat your house better for less money, then you're going to be disappointed. If you are going to buy heaters anyway and don't mind paying a little extra for heaters that look cool, then go ahead an purchase this heater. I did, and I don't regret it. I liken purchasing this device to purchasing a Bose audio device. You'll have to put up with listening to people tell you about how you "overpaid for a name brand", but in the end, most people who have Bose audio systems are very happy with them. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with paying a little more for something you'll be happy with if you can afford it. So these aren't a bargain, but they are fun.

I'll start with a little scene setting: When the idiots who previously owned my 1914 farmhouse a long, long time ago turned the attic into a master bedroom (guest room and bathroom too), they didn't run the heat vents to the master. Because of this, I turn the house heat off at night unless we have guests. They installed a chintzy little built-in electric heater in the wall. The bedroom is 400 square feet with ceilings 25 feet high in center to 12 feet at the edge. The wall heater scares me. I've made it through four winters just fine, only occasionally needing a second blanket. Obviously we have good insulation, seals around the door to the widow's walk, and good windows (I keep one cracked at all times tho). Then I had surgery in early January and was forced to lounge around in bed all day. My SO stayed home to take care of me. In order to heat the bedroom to a comfortable level, the heat downstairs needed to turned on really, really high.

In checking out solutions, I discovered the Dyson hot was a fan as well. I was sold, having fallen in love with fans at my friends homes on hot, hot days last summer. Also since the heat comes from the center of a void, my dog won't interested. They have been known to sniff the vent front on a fan and that part heats up with a space heater. Also dog hair collects on traditional fans (and therefore heat fans). Pugs shed a lot, but with the Dyson Hot, the fur stays on the ground. But everyone was sold out of them, and the company selling on Amazon was marked up $50 over the $399 price tag. On a post-doctor appt. trip to Bed, Bath & Beyond to buy throw pillows to elevate my arm, I saw the Dyson Hot in white was $100 off (blue sold out, but I was in too much pain to care about the color).

After reading reviews, I did not know what to expect. We set it up in the middle of the room on the floor at an angle from the wall, so it would oscillate past the bed (its a platform so low to ground) and I turned it on at 68 degrees fan level 2. I was freezing. It took maybe 5 minutes for me to stop freezing. I didn't really pay attention to it and went about lounging around uncomfortably in bed. I heard it going on and off. It's not loud, but it does sound like a fan. Obviously the higher fan speeds means more noise, but not loud enough to say have to turn the tv off or wake me up.

When my SO came to check on me he commented how the room felt really warm with a noticeable temperature difference between hallway and bedroom. Warm and happy, I turned the fan off for a while and turned it on as needed throughout the last few weeks.

Basic Observations:

1. On Oscillation mode it heats up a 400 square foot room to a comfortable temperature. I am not a person who thinks a room needs to be 80 degrees--more like between 68 to 72. With my arm in a crazy contraption, I can only wear tank tops and the like, so I'm not bundled up. The Dyson Hot keeps At night, I put the Dyson Hot on 66 and eventually turn it off when I get too warm under covers. It heats a decent size room quickly AND COMFORTABLY.

2. On fan speed 2, you can feel the heat from about 10 feet away. It's not a hard blast pf hot, but a warm breeze as it moves by you. 10 feet is where my head sits if its on edge of bed. I didn't test further distances. I also didn't test the stationary mode.

3. It's sitting on hardwood floor. It's not wobbly and it doesn't heat up on the plug or base. The dogs sniff around it a bit, but haven't burnt themselves, although the inside has a warning it gets hot. I didn't touch it. But most importantly, it's sturdy. I've used oscillating heaters in the past (at work) and they always wobbled and would fall easily.

4. Through our really bad winter storms last week, it survived a couple brown outs. It also kept me warm.

5. It has both the thermostat and the fan speed. Much more control than the usual low, medium, high. The thermostat is on the base pointing out instead of on top, so you can actually see it when using remote.

6. I've used the fan a couple times and it offers a nice cool breeze throughout the room.

7. It's not whisper quiet, but than neither was the $150 whisper quiet space heater I had at work.

it is the same audible level as the Dyson fan.

Cons:

1. Moving between the heater and fan is clunky, requiring you to lower the temperature to 32 to turn on fan and up too 66 to turn on heater. I would have liked a button to switch.

2. The remote is supposedly magnetic with the top of the fan. Mine is not as far as I can tell. I keep the remote on the nightstand so not really a problem.

3. No timer. Not necessary, but would be a nice feature.

So yes it's expensive, but if you don't have the money for it, than don't complain about the price just don't buy it. I don't see that as a con. I am willing to pay extra for a safe, reliable room heater that also has a great fan. All of the ones I've used or seen at friends houses have always sucked or are scary like the one stuck in my wall. And not all of those are that cheap anyway. It's not going to substitute for an actual heater in the house, but its an excellent option to add extra heat to a single room.

Update: now that I'm not on bed rest, my SO has been using the Dyson hot. He's more of a crank it up until the room is an oven, he puts it on 86 or so and leaves it on for a while. It really does crank the heat. This thing is warm!

Update 2: After two months of continuous use between January 20 and March 20, 2012 in the cold, cold Seattle Winter including snow (no other heater in bedroom), my bill was $13 more in 2012 than in 2011. So it seems pretty energy efficient.

I bought this product because it was not just a heater it is both a heater and a fan. This product works and works well. We have a large second floor bedroom that gets cooler in the winter than the other areas of the house. We have already had temps of 38 at night and by setting this heater at 72 with the swivel turned on and tilted up warms the room very quickly and then stops while the thermostat waits for the temp to drop. So I do not have to adjust the furnace to compensate for this bedroom. The remote control is extremely simple to use and the read-outs on the front are clear and easily readable. I have tried other heating units and this is by far the best.

There are a lot of negative and positive reviews of this heater and very little in between. Here's my take. First, I paid $260 at Costco...at the $400 list price I would have a different level of expectation, but I'm judging based on what I paid.

It's quiet as fans go...I found it to be a very reasonable sound level. It warms our upstairs nicely (we have a wood stove to heat downstairs...I'm not heating a 1000 square foot detached garage, so I don't know if it's up to that job). The rotating and tilt features are great for our needs to spread the heat around upstairs from the hallway. Controls, remote are all nice, easy to use. It's very small so you would have to practically get on your knees to hit the controls, but the remote eliminates the need for that. The compact cylindrical shape makes it easy to place in small areas. It produces a decent jet of warm air...almost a tube shaped flow.

The exposed surface (inside the ring) does get very warm, BUT not what I'd call dangerously hot. I have a 4 and a 6 year old. If they tried to hold on to the surface as long as they could they might be able to burn themselves, but when I touched it it slowly got more uncomfortable...I pulled my hand away after about 5-10 seconds, unharmed. So I think the kids would feel hot enough that they would pull their hands away well before they got burned. Same for a inquisitive pet sniffing around. With a toddler my concern wouldn't be so much getting burned but knocking it down. I think one could place it outside a baby/toddler room and let it shoot the jet of heat through a gate (leaving 3 ft between the unit and the gate).

It has overheat and tilt safety which I like, although I think the safety shut off for the tilt should kick in a lot sooner...I have a cheap heater that shuts off at about 10 degrees. The Dyson seems to have to be 80 degrees or so...could be a problem if it falls partially on to something and remains on, leaning against it (like a pile of clothes). That should be improved.

Like most of these heaters the cord is only 6 ft so it does make it hard to place (because extension cords are not supposed to be used).

I recommend it enough that I wanted to write this to counter some of the negative reviews.

I chose this because Dyson products have an extremely good reputation. I have one of their vacuums and it's great. This heater is so nice--really heats a room but slowly and keeps it at an even temp. Noisy little freezer. Found one mounting bolt for the compressor missing, one not tighned down. Manual incorrect with settings of temps. This freezer runs almost constantly. Temp inside rises quickly when power is off. I question the amount of insulation used.

Freezer is great for frozen veggie and prepared food packs as well as those bags of frozen breads and rolls and stir-fry, etc., that take up so much space or that slide around when a freezer door is opened and you search for something.

Our older house has limited refrigerator space in the kitchen (unless we rip out some overhead cabinets). When we replaced an old fridge around May 1st, we decided to buy a "supplemental" freezer. After reading multiple reviews on multiple sites, we settled on this freezer. It was small enough and "light" enough for me to muscle it into the basement. It did take several hours to cool down after plugging it in (just like the instruction manual said it would), but we've been using it since May 1st and have had no problems. Because some reviewers of this size freezer (but not this brand) had problems with things staying cold, especially with frequent opening, we keep a pint-sized plastic bowl filled with ice cubes toward the front. So far, the cubes haven't melted noticeably. They serve as a warning system plus give me some cubes in the basement when I'm working down there so they get replaced periodically.

(Aug 18, 2013) We've now used this freezer for several months and gone through a power outage of just less than 6 hours' duration and outdoor temp of 85+ degrees. AFTER the power came back on and the freezer had run awhile, I checked the bowl with the loose ice cubes in it. Result: the cubes had not melted at all (that is, they were still jumbled up instead of fused together or refrozen in a block), indicating that the unit stayed cold enough that the food inside stayed frozen.

Really not much feature wise to discuss here, but the item seems quality and is easy to hook up. I put two down under my radiant floors incase one sensor goes bad. I used hot glue to hold the item in place. Seems durable enough unless you step on the sensor or smack it with a hammer.The line itself is your standard low voltage type line.

Unfortunately this electric floor sensor doesn't work with the Thermostat I purchased. The Honeywell TL8230A1003.

Even though Amazon stated it was often purchased with the T-Stat I bought, it wasnt too clear to me that the Honeywell AC112-01 sensor worked with it.

The Honeywell TL8230A1003 T-Stat is an Ambient (air) Temp Thermostat. Which i am going to keep, because the T-Stat which receives the Floor sensor wiring costs a lot more, and ultimately I just want the floor on and heating itself and the room.

So sunk this into my floor for nothing.

Comments: My house is not well insulated. I have 20' ceilings downstairs, where I spend most of my evenings, and high ceilings in my upstairs office. Running the furnace during these cold winter days does little to make me feel warm and most space heaters feel too puny trying to heat such large spaces. What I needed at is known as a parabolic dish reflector heater. Despite some overly-zealous descriptions, these heaters are not space-age technology. My great-grandmother had a parabolic dish reflector heater more than 60 years ago. Due to Costco's active in-store displays every year, Presto seems to be by far the #1 model. The selling price has risen to a ridiculous 70 100 dollars for something that must only have about 5 bucks of materials in it. After reading many reviews (see rebuttals below), I decided this was the right choice despite several logical negatives.

Pros: It works. The night before I bought it I shivered and was cold to the bone. As soon as I set it up the two of us sitting about 7' apart in front of the TV felt a comfortable warmth. I stress the word comfortable. Neither too hot nor too cold. If either of us moved a few feet out of the "zone" we immediately noticed we were much colder. This is exactly how parabolic dish heaters work ... they focus ALL of their energy into a relatively narrow cone of heat directed at the people who need to be heated. They are NOT intended to heat entire rooms or houses. Perfect for a small group of people and/or pets sitting in front of a TV (think fireplace, the effect is very similar) or someone working at a desk. At this the Presto (and likely other similar brands) absolutely excel. What makes the Presto different from some of the other brands is that it uses a very traditional heater coil like in an old-fashioned toaster. It is exactly the same technology my great-grandmother's heater used back in the 1950's. Some other models use a halogen bulb like a desk lamp. They are blinding to look at and the bulb burns out every few months. The Presto's coils produce only a soft reddish glow.

Cons: It does not tilt up and down. I can live with it not oscillating from side to side, but the fixed angle is just plain wrong and can't be changed. fixed angle seems to defeat the idea of a focused cone of heat. I think only a 10 percent range would be far better than none at all. The next item is one that confounds almost everyone ... why put a nightlight into the base of a space heater? It simply does not make sense. You can take the bulb out, which many people say they do, but why is it there in the first place? The heater is also just a bit too lightweight. As a heater with the potential of tipping over you would think it would weigh at least as much as a table fan. Presto totally missed the boat on this, thinking for some reason that a very LOUD buzzer if the unit is tipped would be a better idea. Some people hate the buzzer. Personally I think I would rather have it annoy me than start a fire, but a better base design would also not be so bad.

Rebuttals: It seems the #1 complaint is that the Presto Heat Dish does not heat their entire room (or house). This is NOT a whole-house or whole-room heater. It is a specialized heater that is designed and intended to focus an intense amount of heat in a very pinpointed direction and the lowest possible energy use. It will also cause a rise in overall room temperature, but that is NOT the intent or design of a parabolic dish reflector heater. Used properly, this type of heater is nothing short of amazing. Why heat the WHOLE room (like my 20' ceilinged living room) when we are sitting in a small area in front of the TV? As far as the night-light, I agree Presto is totally weird in that area but if you hate it, pull the bulb out and enjoy the heat. The manufacturer states in the instructions that you can replace the bulb with a standard Christmas tree bulb. A dark blue bulb actually looks quite attractive. Another negative comment I have seen is that the unit does not have a carrying handle. Reality is that the carrying handle is the thing on the back that is labeled "carrying handle" and clearly pointed out in the instruction manual as a carrying handle. Other review errors state that it points upward at a 60 degree angle. It really points upward at about 15 degrees, about right for someone sitting in a normal chair.

Summary: It rates a fairly solid 5 despite the fact that the first one I bought had a thermostat knob that did absolutely nothing. No matter where I set it, the thing operated continuously on high. Even if I turned it off, the heater was still on non-stop on high. An obvious defect (what are the chances?). I cringe when I read reviewers that say they got a lemon and will NEVER buy anything from that manufacturer. I can't believe a major brand name is junk just because of one bad apple. Update: The unit was instantly replaced and the new one's thermostat works as it should.

"Point Anywhere" is very misleading. As-sold unit MUST be placed in a low spot below the "target". It is ONLY capable of heating at 60 degree angle upward. It is too light to be stable, way too easy to knock over. I think out of the box it is unsafe. I have made modifications to mine.

I see this thing in BJ's and Costco all the time, mounted up high on a shelf pointed down, and the kiosk says "Directional Heat! Point Instant Heat Anywhere You Want It!"

So you open up the box and right there in the WARNING is Do not mount on shelf. Do not point downward. Which is exactly what the Presto demo stands do in the store..? They mount the heater on a high shelf and point it down at the customers. Do you think it would be wise to put this on the floor in the store the way it MUST be used at home? You would think that was unsafe, kids would mess with it, people would inevitably trip over it or kick it over.. So the Presto demonstration display disables the safety shutoff switch and does exactly what the instructions say not to do, mounting it high, pointing it down. You'd think that might be one way of using it, since it says "Point Anywhere". False advertising?

The unit HAS to go below you pointed up. Pretty much that means it has to be on the floor. Instructions also say do not use near dogs, cats, children, curtains, furniture etc.. In other words, do not use in typical household environment. Our dog knocked it over frequently because it's just stupid-easy to knock over. Imagine a large standard 3-speed desk fan, only you can just ever so lightly bump into it and it topples over. It's featherlight, unevenly proportioned and topheavy, a trip hazard, and has no base weight AT ALL to stabilize it.

I bought this to warm my dad while he sits at his computer or watches television, intending to place it safely on a clear bureau or dresser to provide ambient heat. Best I can do now is stick it on the floor and bake the tops of his knees. As it was out of the box in our case, it was useless.

There is a large spring-loaded switch under the base, it's easily bypassed. You can do it with scotch tape. NOT RECOMMENDED, but this allows you to point it "anywhere" including a down-angle as the in-store demo clearly does. I built an angled wooden platform, put a brick inside it to add weight, and screwed the heater down. Now I can aim it where I want, and it doesn't fall over. Problem solved.

Aside from the fact you can't really aim it where you want it, it does everything else you'd expect it to. Doesn't get too hot to the touch, provides EXCELLENT heat in the target zone, and saves you a lot of money by quickly and consistently heating a particular spot rather than trying to heat an entire area. Just don't trip over it.

I've been having this product for almost 2 years now. It was designed to direct heat to a small area. Unfortunately I did not find the HeatDish a good heater even for keeping a single person warm. If you direct it towards you, you'll be burning so much, even through your clothing, that it actually hurts. You move just a bit farther, and you'll feel very little warm sensation. What usually happens is that one side of mine is burning, while my other side is totally cold.

The heat coming out of this HeatDish is very focused to a small area. You will instantly start feeling the heat, in fact so much heat that it literally burns you. At the same time, other areas of the room will remain cold for a long time. Since the HeatDish doesn't have a fan, it absolutely doesn't help evenly distributing the heat. If you need to heat the entire room, you should be able to find a much better heater, one that oscillates (rotates the heating grille) and uses a fan.

The HeatDish is entirely silent while it's on. However, it has a fairly loud rattling noise when it turns on -and in the low setting, it does turn on and off every 15 seconds or so. It is a bit hard to sleep hearing the heater clicking. It's very bright, too: The entire parabola dish lights up, making the room as bright as daylight. I occasionally need a heater that can keep my bedroom warm for the night, for the case the central heater goes wrong, and this is not the right equipment for that.

There's no way of setting the temperature with the HeatDish. You can adjust its power from low to high, but it has little to do with keeping a preset temperature, even approximately. In most cases it's too hot in the evening and very cold by the morning. If there's no one to occasionally adjust the temperature, it will not be very comfortable. For example, it doesn't work well for me as a night-time heater. It doesn't have a timer either.

My HeatDish went wrong after less than 2 years of very occasional use (I normally use central heating, a gas furnace). It no longer turns off, it always heats at its maximum power, so I can no longer leave it alone. You should not draw any conclusions from this -things go wrong sometimes. When it was working, it was regulating the temperature by periodically turning the ceramic element on and off. When it's on, it is very, very hot. There was never a way to lower the actual power of the heating element.

Safety: If the HeatDish is not entirely horizontal, it instantly makes an exceptionally loud alarming sound. You can not possibly tip it over without noticing it. In fact, it is nearly impossible to move this heater around while it's on without sounding its alarm.

Verdict: If you need an instant heater that makes a tiny area of the room super hot in no time, it does the job. It does a dissatisfying job at distributing the heat, even to a small area like a sofa, or automatically keeping a preset temperature.

I bought the Presto heatdish because my house furnace has a issue and one side of the house is not working. I have a few larger portable heaters but they just dont do a good job, even the ones with a fan don't put out the heat you would expect out of a 1,500 watt heater. The Presto is great, heat is instant, covers a large area(approx 8 foot wide by 15 foot). I am sitting currently 15 feet away and can feel the heat, I don't have my house furnace on now and it is 30 degrees outside and I am very comfortable and area I am in is probably 70 degrees or more using just this heater. I have it in a corner of my living room(is 20x20) and works perfect letting you sit far enough away to get the wide area heat and not overheat. I do have to watch my dog, she tries to lay right in front of it and worries me since it does get very intense close to the heater. It is very lightweight and at first I didn't think it was in the box, I'd say it weights under a pound. It had the light which I have no use for, but would make a great thing to use outside if you have a motorhome and want to keep the chill off and have a light at the same time. Overall it is a great product, instant heat and uses slot less power than normal portable heaters.

The Presto HeatDish does exactly as described. My observations are:

1) The heat is very strong and directional.

2) Great if you and your significant other are opposites. My heatdish is directed at my wife while I prefer cooler temperatures.

3) The nightlight cannot be turned off. You must remove the bulb if you don't want it on.

4) The heat dish does not have a carrying handle on the back if you want to move it.

5) The heat dish is in a fixed position so you have to set it in the exact position to direct the heat where you want it. It would have been very nice if it could tilt up and down.

6) This does not have an "OFF" switch. To turn it off, you have to unplug it.

My pipe was frozen solid, with more cold weather in the forecast. I wrapped my pipe with this after work, and by the next day at noon (the next time I checked), the water was flowing freely. The Lux 500E thermostat is easy to install and easy to program. Can readily change set temperature, without opening cover, by pressing exterior up or down arrow [1 degree per click]. I rate it only 4 stars because it does not have a light and some display wording is too small, i.e., difficult to read. The wall plate cost only $2.00 and gives a nice appearance. I purchased both the thermostat and wall plate at same time from Amazon, but they were shipped from different locations; wall plate arrived a few days after thermostat.

I bought my first Lux 500 thermostat on a Sunday morning in January 1999 when it was 30 degrees outside and the existing Honeywell digital/programmable thermostat (roughly six years old) had failed. I was waiting at Home Depot when they opened their doors at 7 am, and choose the Lux 500 from their available inventory. The house has no A/C, only a forced air gas furnace. Installation was simple and, within an hour of leaving the house for Home Depot, the furnace was working again and the house was warm. Programming is easy: you turn a dial to select day of week and time, and programs for weekday, Saturday, and Sunday. Vacation Hold and override functions are easy to program and operate. The device uses AA batteries which I change out once per year in the fall.

My only qualm lies with the issue of durability. After several years, the units seem to develop either short circuits or worn-out switches, in particular the on-off switch (which basically remains in the "on" position for the entire heating season and is switched back to "off" only once each spring, then back to "on" in late fall). The original unit began acting erratically after about five years of use. At that point, I found the Lux 500 offered online from an Ace Hardware Outlet store (roughly $26; Amazon did not yet sell them) and purchased TWO of them: one to replace the existing Lux 500, and one to keep on hand as a spare, having learned my lesson after my 7 am trip to Home Depot. Last year, I had to install the spare, since unit #2 stopped working reliably, so each of the first two units provided 4-5 years of service.

The current (third) unit, the former "spare", has been in place for nearly two years and the on-off switch is starting to "act up": you have to push it up and "jiggle" it to get the unit up and running, which makes me wonder if the switch contacts are wearing out, and/or not well made at the factory from the outset. One advantage of replacing with the same model--assuming it meets your needs--is that there is no learning curve, and installation is simply a matter of removing the screws that hold the base to the wall, and reconnecting the wires on the new unit in the same configuration (duplicating the original installation).

My only other hesitation about the Lux 500 is the lack of a backlit display. Outside of daylight hours, I have to turn on a nearby overhead light fixture to read the display or adjust the programs.

The bottom line: a good and easy-to-use thermostat for the price, as long as you don't expect 10-15 years of service from it. And given the reasonable price, if you buy one and like it, you may as well buy a second unit to keep as a spare, in case your original unit stops working at an inconvenient time. Just as people keep spare light bulbs and batteries on hand. That way, you can fix the problem instantly without having to learn a new system. In my case, since I've used a total of three units of the same model, even the holes in the base of the unit matched the drywall anchors on the wall. Installation was simply a matter of removing two or three screws, removing the old base, and inserting the new base using the same screws. Ditto for the control wires, which simply connect to the same terminal screws in the new base. After adding batteries, the front (display/control) portion of the unit then snaps on top of the base, and you're in business.

Four star rating, with one star deducted because neither of my first two units lasted longer than roughly five years.

Note for "green" customers: the battery bay has a warning sticker to use only alkaline AA batteries and not rechargeable batteries. So once or twice a year you will have to recycle or otherwise dispose of a pair of AA alkaline batteries. The owner manual specifically advises use of alkaline batteries only.

I grew up in a Crepe lovin' household. We had sweet crepes for breakfast, savory crepes for lunch and meat filled crepes for dinner.

I always have used a stove top crepe pan and thought it slow and kind of a pain. That is how my dad always did it so I always thought it was the best way.

Not anymore. A friend recommended I try the Villaware electric crepe maker. Non stick coating, quick and easy. Boy were they right. Just dip the the cooker in the pan they include and you are making a crepe every 25 seconds or so. Easy to clean. I love this thing. Good recipes too, altough their basic recipe is not sweet enough.

In anticipation of granting my high school French club's wish to have an after-school crepe party, I bought a VIllaWare crepe maker at Christmas. This past week we used it, along with the more traditional skillet-on-the-stove method in our home ec room. While the seniors preferred the skillets, which allowed them to show off their crepe flipping ability, the younger students liked the "perfect every time" certainty of the VillaWare crepe maker. It was so much fun watching them cook for themselves and for the other faculty members, whose noses led them to see who and what was cooking in the home ec room after school! We had both dessert and chicken crepes. The French 4 kids "volunteered" to make more crepes the next day in class so as to use up the many left-over toppings. This may be one of the better crepe makers at the price there are a couple of things that really bum me out ...

One .. it takes close to a good 3 to 4 minutes to make a crepe on this machine even though it has a 900 watt element (200 more than and older model...) so unless you are makeing crepes for one ... realx have a drink cause your gonna be sitting at this machine for some time ..

Two .. the teflon covering .. well it's French teflon ... don't expect it to last ... nuff said ...

Three .. the handle doesnt come off and the crepe batter is pretty liquid so get ready to use toothpicks to clean the cracks between the handle of the crepe maker and teflon plate

Four .. appart from that it's probably the best machine out there .. definitely for the money ... and .. since we love crepes and theres more than one person in my house I've bought 2 of these machines ... go figure ....

We have had this crepe maker for about a year, and although it makes great crepes, the teflon surface is seriously peeling off (enough that we can no longer use it) after just about 20 uses. This is my major problem with it, and I will not by this brand again.

It does make much thinner, more delicate crepes than using a pan, but the batter has to be just so not too much or too little oil or flour, or else they either stick or fall off the surface.

I made my first batch of crepes last night, and I am happy to report that they were very easy to make. Why not 5 stars then? I agree with other reviewers that the chord becomes easily entangled. I had to stop three or four times throughout the batch and untangle the chord. Other than that, each crepe only took about 40 seconds to make and were delicious, using the basic recipe from the manual. Another issue I have with this crepe maker is the dipping pan that is included as part of the set. Besides being made out of plastic, it is oddly shaped: mine actually appears to have been through the dishwasher because it looks a little warped. Also, when I got to the bottom of the batter, I was afraid, like another reviewer, that I was melting the plastic into my crepes. A better chord design and a glass dipping pan would make this unit merit 5 starts. I would still, however, recommend this crepe maker for its price and ease of use.

There is a lot to like about this thermostat. The display is bright, easy to read, and most functions on the unit are quite simple to program. The thermostat offers many different ways to be customized and it will likely will meet all of your needs. However, before you buy the thermostat, be sure that you feel confident programming it yourself. Honeywell explicitly will NOT provide any customer support for this thermostat, as it is supposed to be a trade-only thermostat. That is, only the trades are supposed to install this unit and hence there is NO customer support at Honeywell for this unit.

To reinforce this message, Honeywell ships the unit installer settings locked by default so to get to the installer settings, you have to enter the date code into the installer-menu lockout (see the manual). Working your way through the many installer menu options is actually quite simple, so I was left scratching my head why Honeywell wants to restrict this unit to the trade-only. It probably has to do with profit margins since Honeywell also advertises that this unit is so simple to set up that the installer will save hours on the install and Honeywell encourages contractors not to pass on that time savings to the customer but to increase their profits instead. Not everyone wants to call in a professional for $$$ every time that they have a small question on the product. If Honeywell can provide support for $30 thermostats then it would seem reasonable to provide support for thermostats that cost 10x also.

For the 93% of the US that uses air-based heating and cooling (heat pump or furnace), this unit works great right out of the box. However, if you happen to have a water-based heating system (i.e. radiant, radiators, steam, etc.) and also AC, this thermostat requires more work to set up, and the approach is not intuitive. Why? Well, there is no installer setting for "hydronic heat and AC". Instead, you are limited to choosing among a conventional furnace, a heat pump, or a heat-only approach. A strange limitation on a premium thermostat that targets premium heating systems...

Anyhow, to make the thermostat work automatically with AC and a hydronic heating system, select the "conventional" system setting, declare two-stage heating system (even if it doesn't have two stages) and finally program the fan to only come on with stage 2. Otherwise, your AC fan blower will come on every time there is a call for heat. If you have a whole house humidifier, you can elect to have the fan come on with the humidifier, but not with every heat call. If that sounds like a bit of a workaround, it is, but at least there is a workaround. Plus, you can download your menu settings to a USB memory stick once and then upload them around the house, eliminating the need to program every thermostat.

Besides handling multiple stages of heating and cooling, the thermostat also offers a Wireless Outdoor Temperature Sensor, which works well over long distances and is easy to install. The many ways in which the thermostat can be controlled are quite nifty among them a portable handheld controller and the "TotalConnect" system. The latter is part of a Honeywell suite of home automation / security tools that, once again, only trained Honeywell professionals are meant to install. While that aspect may be annoying, I suppose a whole lot of people may like the convenience of being able to use a Apple/Android smartphone/tablet applications as long as they can stomach the monthly subscription model that Honeywell is using right now. If I needed that kind of connectivity, I'd probably opt for something like the Ecobee Internet Thermostat instead since that unit does not require a $$ monthly subscription.

The installation of the Prestige HD thermostat is a breeze thanks to the easy-to-wire base that can be affixed to the wall before snapping the thermostat in place. The terminals are easy to use and well-labeled. These thermostats can also interface with humidification systems, dehumidification systems, etc. but you are locked into a proprietary wireless communications format (Redlink, a Honeywell-only technology) so you better like the external interface and/or units that Honeywell offers if you go wireless. But, I hold out hope that Honeywell will not only see the light and change its attitude towards the hands that feed them (i.e. customers) but that they'll also offer firmware updates so that these great thermostats can meet the needs of more customers. After all, there is a USB port to upload installer-menu settings, images, contact information, etc.

Update on 11/21/11: Honeywell has released a new Prestige series thermostat, the Honeywell YTHX9321R5079 Prestige® 2.0 HD which allows for more heating systems to be specified up front. Hence, if you go for that thermostat, you will not have to engage in the work-around I did. This is especially helpful for those who use deep setbacks since such setbacks may in fact trigger the Prestige to engage the 2nd stage heating system, turning on the fan potentially when you don't want it to. What is a bit ironic to me is that many vendors here and elsewhere are still hawking first generation Prestige HD thermostats for more money than their more capable 2.0 replacements.

Bought this unit from another supplier about a year and a half ago. There are many things that I love about this thermostat. Easily read, great programming options, wireless remotes, and more. Recently the temperature readout has become erratic making the thermostat useless. Honeywell advertises a 5 yr warranty on this unit and provides a number to call for service. I called and was told that the unit can only be returned to the contractor that installed it. Even though the warranty specifically states that one can call the 800 number and have the unit replaced, Honeywell refuses to replace it. I informed them that I bought the thermostat on line and thus had no contractor. They are adamant about this item being a contractor item saying that only a certified contractor can install it. Garbage! I installed and programed this unit in 10 minutes. There is nothing different about installing this thermostat over a retail model. Just a marketing ploy! No where on the warranty does it state that the unit must be replaced by a contractor if defective. I have a useless $400 thermostat! My advise DO NOT BUY!!!!

I've had nothing but problems with the unit. It looks great but can't keep a schedule without removing the unit from the wall and pulling the backup battery to clear it's cock-eyed scheduling. I've had to do this many times now. The problem is its internal clock and scheduling keep going way off. For example, it runs the schedule 12 hours off sometimes. Like when it's 4 pm and it's running the schedule for 6 am. I've confirmed the clock date/time and the am/pm times as correct. But internally it thinks it's another time other than what is displayed in the unit. And sometimes it doesn't clear old schedules. When you change a schedule, let's say from your Winter to Summer schedule, sometimes it's running the old schedule that no longer appears in the unit. I'm looking at what it's running at and wondering where are these temperatures coming from? There are no temps like this scheduled. Then I remember, that temp was from an old schedule that is no longer in the unit.

Here's what I think is wrong:

1) The time you see displayed in the unit is NOT the time it uses to run the schedule. It must use a separate internal clock that isn't always the same as the time you see. When the internal clock is out of sync with the time displayed, you can't adjust it, except to kill the power to it to wipe the time, then input the date/time again.

2) The schedule you see is NOT the schedule it uses. It must use an internal schedule (same as the date/time problem above) that you cannot see and it isn't always the same as the schedule you can see or adjust. It seems to run old schedules that are no longer displayed but somehow are still in memory and you can't delete them. The best you can do here is pull the unit off the wall to kill the hardwired power and then pull the backup battery and let it sit for awhile. The unit still has the schedule in memory but this seems to help. But there's nothing else you can do.

Still the same problem as above. And now it runs off schedule for no reason. For example, I have it set to turn on the air conditioning from 11 am to 5 pm seven days a week for the Summer. But the air turns on after 10 am (instead of 11 am) and shows the air conditioning temp I set for 11 am. I kept fiddling with this and can't seem to change this. I can't figure out why it's going off an hour early. I also confirmed the thermostat is off by 2 degrees. So if it's set for 71 degrees for air conditioning, it'll really be set for 69 degrees.

I really regret paying this much for a thermostat that can't keep such a simple schedule with an inaccurate thermostat to boot. It looks great with its HD screen, but that's all it does well.
