I bought this thermostat (four of them actually) to replace four 28-year old analog thermostats controlling the baseboard heating in a condo I bought as a second home. These digital units immediately let me set temperatures without having to guess and constantly juggle to get a proper temperature as the old non-digital thermostats required. They hold temperatures within a nice narrow range (although they can be programmed via a dip switch to let temperatures fluctuate a bit more for possible energy savings) for each room. Installation was simple (note that you do want to cap off the second set of wires if you have a 120V system -read the instructions and note how any existing thermostats are wired to make installation easy). The $2 faceplates which can be ordered separately seem to be necessary to get a finished look on the installation since the thermostats apparently do not mount flush to all boxes.

Each unit takes 2 batteries (AA) so get them before you install the unit. They recommend two major brands and no others -probably a good idea to follow that suggestion. This is not a "rechargeable battery" setup.

I was looking for replacement digital double pole thermostats for my whole house and found that there seems to be a total of only two different digital thermostats made that work on double pole. I initially got the Honeywell for my living room, waiting to replace the rest of the house at a later time. Later I got the Lux ELV4 for the three bedrooms because of the overall price difference on three units. The things I noticed right away after installing the Lux is that the over all look of it was a lot less appealing. Not that any of these thermostats are really nice looking, but this one is just a little bigger and not as clean a design. Otherwise here are my pros and cons of this unit:

Cons:

Very loud electric switch when it turns on and off. This may not seem to horrible but it's loud enough it wakes me up at night.

No backlight, makes it hard to adjust in the middle of the night without having to turn on another light.

Display is very tiny and quickly flashes between time and current temperature. No way to control if it only shows one or the other.

Requires Batteries. The Honeywell works without batteries and is able to store the programmed setting even if it looses power.

5-2 Programming Only. Ok, no other programable double pole digital thermostat does anything other then 5-2 either but would be nice if one of them did.

Pros:

Easy to install though recommend having some basic electrician tools (multi-meter or voltage tester) to ensure you know which lines are the load/power lines and correctly connect everything, especially in older homes.

Easy to program

Price.

It works well, but I guess you get what you pay for. If you really want a good unit save a few extra dollars and get the more expensive one.

This is a great in-line thermostat. I put 5 in my house just recently and they are easy to install, easy to program and work well. Some rooms are 120V and some are 240V and this worked on both. However, I also have ONE of the more expensive kind which go for about $55. The difference is that these ELV4's have a very loud relay that clicks when engaging and disengaging. Loud enough that if you are a light sleeper, you'd be disturbed by the relay click. I (just by dumb luck) happen to have the other-brand $55-dollar version in the master bedroom and it is silent. I never hear it at all. The Lux ELV4s I have in my family room, kitchen, basement and kids' bedrooms. The clicking doesn't seem to bother the kids at night, but I definitely notice it in the family room and kitchen.

The Lux is also not as attractive (or rather, more unattractive) than the other one, but none of them are nice to look at so who really cares anyway.

So, final word: Good, quality product. Handles 240 and 120 V systems. Works very well and is easy to use. Great price. Caveat: Loud relay.

Honest reviews on Lux Products ELV4 Programmable Line Voltage Thermostat

The manual states this, and the same is also printed on a sticker attached to the wiring:

WARNING: THIS THERMOSTAT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH HEATING

APPLIANCES WHICH CONTAIN BOTH AN ELECTRIC HEATING ELEMENT

(RESISTIVE LOAD) AND A BLOWER FAN (INDUCTIVE LOAD) WITHIN

THE SAME DEVICE.

I read that as not being compatible with fan forced wall/baseboard heaters. Would have been nice if they would have stated that in the product description. Lux does list this information on their product page:

I ordered this thermostat based on its electrical rating in the product description, which as it turns out is incorrect. The thermostat is actually rated for 15 amps, not 16 amps. The wattage rating is 1800/3600 watts, not 1900/3800 watts. I will have to return it because I'm right at the capacity rating listed in the product description. Be sure to check your wattage/amperage requirements carefully before ordering: 15 Amps, 3600 watts (240VAC) maximum!

Very disappointed with the lifespan of the LaCrosse remote sensor. The original I received with the weather station failed after four months, and a replacement I purchased lasted about as long. I like my LaCrosse weather station a lot and have had no problems with the main unit, but I don't want to purchase a new remote unit three or four times a year.

This was the 3rd of three remotes I've had linked to a La Crosse clock/thermometer unit. The first fell and broke, but the second and third units simply failed. While they worked, the range on the units was very poor. I had difficulty at times in getting a signal within 8 ft. through a window in line of sight with the remote. As nice as it is to have a remote temperature sensor, La Crosse doesn't seem to be able to provide reliable products for that purpose.

Best Deals on La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor for 433 MHz

The specs on this unit are +/2 degrees "under normal conditions". That probably means "at room temperature." At winter temps, freezing and below, this unit is over 5 degrees off. La Crosse more or less admits to this on their web site. The saddest thing is that the LaCrosse base stations display outside temperatures to 1/10th of a degree for a sensor that is +/2 degrees at best and generally not even that close.

Honest reviews on La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor for 433 MHz

I have owned two of the outdoor LaCrosse Wireless Temperature sensors. Both have failed within the first 1.5 years. When the sensor goes out, you will not see the outside temperature on the indoor display. I will NOT purchase another LaCrosse unit.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor for 433 MHz

Although I like the base station, the TX6U remote is a costly product in that you have to spend $15+ every year for a new one. They are very unreliable. I just wish La Crosse would engineer these things to last.

Review of VillaWare V3900 Krumkake Baker

Words cannot say how much I love this machine. Using my bestemor's (grandma for you non-norwegian speakers) heavy-duty cast iron krumkake iron, the process of making of krumkaker would require an entire afternoon and burnt fingertips. Well, no longer. I made an entire recipe in about an hour and without any help. This is an excellent product and I recommend it highly. Also is included is a recipe for Krumkake and a wooden roller. For those of you who are not familiar with this Norwegian treat, one really delicious way to eat it is to fill it with a mixture of sweetened whipped cream and cloudberries (or lingonberries) It is a real treat.

My only complaint is that the design is not as pretty as the one on my bestemors krumkake iron. But that is a minor detail.

Vær så god!!

One of the things that is nice about the VillaWare Krumkake Baker is that you can cook so many krumkake quickly by cooking two at a time. The design on the iron makes very pretty krumkake. While we have our own krumkake receipe from Norway, the one included with the cooker is excellent. Note, in order to make the krumkake authentically thin, you need to make sure your batter isn't too thick. Totally non stick, it is very easy to clean.

This was so much fun to make small cones for ice cream and so beautifully decorated that everything came out perfect. I made all kinds of fillings from creams to puddings and filled them up. They are beautiful and very nordic in design. You can even just make cookies and also very pretty, easy to use, nothing to clean, and impressive to show.

Honest reviews on VillaWare V3900 Krumkake Baker

I love it so much! It is so easy to use and the Krumkate came out very thin. However the product is "made in China" not "made in USA" as indicated under its description. I experienced that the cookies came out rather dark, so I used a timer instead of waiting for the light. It will take approximately one minute and 45 seconds for each cookie. I set mine as one minute and 25 seconds. If you want a thin krumkate, your batter should be thin. The thinner, the faster it will take, so adjust your timer accordingly. It is easy to clean with a dam towel or paper towel

My purchase consisted of two Krumkake bakers; one for a shower gift for my daughter and one to replace my two old stovetop krumkake irons. The electric is far superior to the stovetop irons because it is so easy to use and it does not generate the amount of heat that the elements on the stove top do. I am very pleased with my baker and my daughter loves hers as well.

My husband had tried several other thermosets, 6 in all, on our new air conditioner, but none seemed to work. We looked to see what the thermoset was at our home and it was Totaline, it works great! This one is not with battery backup but we didn't want battery backup. Good price and great service. Would by from this company again.

I bought this fan unit to help air circulation in a custom sound conditioned and air filtered 19" computer rack that I just finished building. I'm on the fence whether I should return it now that it's installed, here's why:

While it does start up when plugged in and does push air without too much additional noise, it has several significant drawbacks:

1) Don't buy this product and expect it to fit within a normal number of rack spaces. It's height really is 4.3" tall (I thought this may have been a typo...no) and the screw hole locations don't allow the device to fit correctly in a fixed number of rack units (normally divisible by 1.75") within a standard 19" rack. The screw hole locations require about half a rack unit above and below the device, causing significant air gaps that need to be taped up in order to ensure proper air movement from front to back.

2) The temperature display doesn't have a display granularity of less than 2 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temp is in between two even temperature values, the display numbers bounce back and forth between the upper and lower numbers.

3) The temperature reading seems to be 1 to 2 degrees high, but I guess that's better than reading too low.

I'll give the product an initial 2 stars and and update depending on how long the fans last.

Bought this item only a few months ago and will have to send it back for repair....bearings in one of the fans have already burned out and squeal when you turn the unit on. The unit looks good but like most things today are not made in the US, so the quality is just not there. Hope I don't have a problem returning the unit for repair or replacement, If I do I'll post it here !!!!!

Okay so maybe this is amateur grade but that's fine by me. I wasn't about to spend high dollar for my basic system. I don't know about long term but as we speak the fan is up and running. I'm able to hear the fans but they sound like their turning freely and operating just fine.

I hope this continues but if something were to change i will let you know.

I purchased this item to assist in the air circulation for my companies 7' AV rack that holds a multitude of amps, recievers, EQ's and switch boards. It has helped a lot to keep the air flowing and equipment cool. I really enjoy the built in LED tempature disply on the front of the unit. One susgestion I would make to new buyers it to place the thermostat wire inside of your rack to better ascertain the tempature. I would like to see an option to reverse the air flow so as to have the air pulled out, but it does great for what it does. Cant beat the price either.

I use an electric heater in the office, that I built in my garage. I have been running this with an electronic wall thermostat that holds the temperature within 1 degree most of the time.

In the summer I have a room air conditioner that has always held an uneven temperature so I thought I would try this wall thermostat for both heat and AC. It works well with temperature held within a narrow range. It is not as constant as the electronic thermostat was in winter, but it is good I'll see this winter how it actually compares to the electronic thermostat for heating.

This is an excellent appliance; I'm on my second one. However, it's no substitute for a true Crock Pot.

As with a whole string of multicookers, this cooker is basically a container-removable in this case-on a heat source with a thermostat. Unlike most of the thermostats, this West Bend simply has numbers approximating some of the settings on Crock Pots. A Crock Pot has heating elements surrounding the crockery insert to provide a more even heat.

There are advantages to both designs. One of the great advantages to this type of cooker is that one can cook much faster in this. The hot plate will heat up the ingredients hours faster. The wattage is ten times higher, so of course it will boil faster.

What's the disadvantage? That same thermostat. Rather than providing a steady heat, the thermostat in these cookers cycles on and off and without the crockery insert to 'even out' the heat, the food will alternately boil and cycle off. Not such a bad thing necessarily, but it can and will cause some foods to stick to the nonstick interior. Even if they have a crockery pot to go on the hot plate, these cookers will still have a hot zone on the bottom that isn't present in a true Crock Pot.

Another advantage is that, because these pots have much higher power, one can take the lid off and stir to minimize sticking, and the heat source will quickly restore the preset temperature. In a Crock Pot, removing the lid will add at least 30 minutes to the cooking time.

Why am I on my second pot like this? Just wore the finish off the bottom on my first one-though it took many years to do that, even only using plastic utensils. After a year or two the outline of the heat source became visible on the bottom, though the nonstick finish was still there. It just started flaking off and so I got rid of it. For those who are nervous about chemical nonstick finishes this isn't the setup for you.

For those who are used to cooking in a true Crock Pot, there will also be some adjustment required to recipes. This type of cooker loses moisture like an average pot on the stove, so most slow cooker recipes will lose more steam/water in this type of pot.

West Bend made 'bean pot' cookers for many years with a crockery pot on a hot plate; I've got one and it does an excellent job as this type does. Just don't expect it to do what a Crock Pot does.

This is the best small appliance I have ever had. I have had it 20 years or so. I cook everything in it: pot roasts, pork roasts, stew, pulled pork, beans, etc. I have purchased about 8 of them over the years for wedding gifts, college graduation gifts, Xmas, etc.

There are two main reasons I love this so much. One is the versitility of the heat control. I hate crockpots because all you get is low and high! Give me a break, who cooks like that?? These have settings from 1-5, almost as many as a stove burner. I can brown my stew or roast on 5 then turn it down to 3 or halfway between 3 & 4 or 4 depending on how long I want to be away from the house or want it to cook. The base doubles as a griddle by itself. Takes up very little counter and storage space. The pot goes into the oven or on the stove if you need or want it to. The pot and lid go into the dishwasher, although I ususally just give a quick wash with hot soapy water and wipe off the base. The other reason I love it is it is small and lightweight. No heavy monster crockpots to handle, try to lift full of food and then try and wash!

I have the older model of this cooker that is 6 quarts. At the time I purchased it you had the choice of 4 or 6 qt size. After 20 years I need to replace it, although it still works perfectly, the teflon pot lining is scratched and the teflon coating on the base(griddle) is flaking. But after 20 years of using it 3-5 times a week, its certainly held up wonderfully. I am now purchasing two more, one for me and one as a wedding gift! My only regret is that they no longer make the 6 quart in this model, only the 5 qt. I would recommend it without question!! Enjoy!

Best Deals on West Bend 84905 5-Quart Oblong-Shaped Slow Cooker

I received this 6qt oblong cooker back in the 80's for a gift. It was gold in color. I LOVED this unit! I use it all the time. Over the years it has shown wear. Because of my love for this unit, I attempted to replace it, even though the old one is still functioning. I found that this unit is no longer available in the 6 qt size, it is now a 5 qt. Very disappointing but acceptable. I ordered it. Upon receipt I found the glass lid did not fit properly. It rocked allowing heat, steam & moisture to escape...Very dangerous for transporting. Called the Company and was sent a new vessel, assuming mine waa warped. I didn't think the glass lid could be faulty. Received vessel (after a 2 week wait). Same problem! Vessel is much more thinner than original. Again, I can deal with this. Not happy but will deal with it. I am VERY VERY disappointed in the unit because of the ill fitting lid. I am very sorry I ordered it. Definitely would not recommended it.

Honest reviews on West Bend 84905 5-Quart Oblong-Shaped Slow Cooker

I ordered this slow cooker to replace a Rival that was 10-years-old and no longer coming up to temperature. When it first arrived, I was a bit skeptical as it appeared to be smaller than my original slow cooker, but despite its compact size, this slow cooker holds the same amount as the much bulkier Rival.

PROS: I love the fact that I can brown meats on the stove in the cooker before placing the cooker on the base to slow-cook no need to dirty up an additional pan browning the meat. I also enjoy using the base as a griddle for pancakes or French toast, or grilled cheese sandwiches freeing a burner on my stove. The griddle and slow cooker are very easy to clean the non-stick surface is great. The temperature settings on the griddle range from 1 -5 1 being low, 2 medium, 3 representing high for a slow cooker, and 4 and 5 used for griddle use. This slow cooker is so compact! I've never seen a slow cooker of similar capacity take up so little space.

CONS: I have not discovered any yet.

I wore out my West Bend cooker of some 20 years ago, bought one for my dad, and sister and two friends.

This item is sturdy, versatile, easy to maintain, and reliable. Better suited to large pieces of meat like whole chickens because of the shape.

The only negative is the short cord length.

I was not overly happy when I first received our Ecobee Thermostat, and I learned that I was going to need this remote temperature sensor module. Once we received it, the company that handles our commercial air conditioning system came to install it, because I was not comfortable with installing it. He said that installing the module in the thermostat casing was easy, but the instructions to integrate the module in the actual thermostat system were vague. It took a lot of trial and error with both of us going through each menu trying different combinations until something worked.

But now that it is installed and working, it is great.

My previous thermostats were the standard dial ones that you see in most apartments and condos. I had read a bit about them not being very accurate and not able to control temperature well as a result. Not only that but the dial ones are unsightly.

My search concluded when I found these. They look fantastic, are reasonably priced, and offer some nice features. I purchased four and had them installed in no time.

I love the room temperature display on the outside (now I know how cold I'm really letting it get in my place before turning on the heat), and the ability to set temperature exactly where I want it now. If you have baseboard heating and dial thermostats that are single-pole it might be time to upgrade!
