I am reviewing the Frigidaire FRA086AT7 8,000 BTU Mini Compact Window Air Conditioner. I am giving this AC a good review, but will mention a few things I didn't like about it. All of the complaints are minor, except for one, which was a problem for me, but might not be for you. I'll start with the background information, then list the features, and then list the good points and bad points.

Background Information:

This is a great AC with many features, good looks, digital display, remote control, and it cools the room very well. I'm using it installed in a window for my bedroom. Mine is 8,000 BTUs, but Frigidaire has similar models with different BTUs. It only comes in White. Even though it is described as "Mini Compact," it appears very sturdy and well-made and isn't really that small. Installation was a breeze because the unit weighs only about 50 lbs. It comes with the AC unit, a window installation kit, a nice manual, foam that you can put between the windows, and self-adhesive weatherstripping to cover any openings. All hardware is included. You just need a Phillips screwdriver to install it and a drill if you want to screw the top of the unit into your window. It is Energy-Star Compliant. The warranty is ONE YEAR Full Coverage and FIVE YEARS for the AC compressor.

Features:

* It has a green LED digital display with membrane button controls. You press buttons to control the unit. There are no knobs. Membrane means that all the buttons are covered by hard plastic and you press the label on the plastic that covers the buttons underneath. Each button press emits a beep, but if you hold the temperature/timer button down, it scrolls faster and only beeps once.

* It has buttons for On-Off, Mode, Fan Speed, Temp/Timer Up, Temp/Timer Down, Timer, Sleep, Filter Reset, and Clean Air.

* The Green Digital display shows the Temperature and Timer. Normally, when the unit is on Cool or Econ, it shows the temperature you have set, like a thermostat. However, when the fan only is on, it shows the actual temperature in the room. When you are setting the Timer, it displays the count-down timer.

* It has green LEDs for the 3 modes, the 4 fan speeds, whether the digital display is showing Fahrenheit, Centigrade, or Timer, Timer On, Sleep On, Filter Reset On, Clean Air On, and Remote Sensing On.

* You turn the unit on and off and it remembers your last settings. You press Mode to select from Cool, Econ, or Fan Only. Econ is Economy Mode that cycles the AC compressor on and off, once it reaches the set temperature, to conserve energy.

* Fan Speeds are Low, Med, High, so you have 3 speeds for both the AC and fan. The AC also has Auto Fan, which regulates the fan speed automatically for you. It comes on full blast when you first turn it on, then gradually lowers the fan speed as it reaches your desired temperature.

* The Up and Down buttons are used to set the temperature on the digital display. You can set it from 60 degrees to 90 degrees and display it as either Fahrenheit or Centigrade. These buttons are also used to set the Timer.

* The Timer button allows you to program the unit to either turn on or shut off one time over a 24 hour period.

* The Sleep button raises the temperature you have set by 2 degrees, one half hour after you activate it, and then by another 2 degrees, half an hour later. Then it keeps this temperature for the next 7 hours. It sounds more confusing than it is. Basically, you can activate the Sleep feature when you go to sleep. It assumes an 8-hour sleep cycle. So if you set the temperature for 72 degrees, then an hour after you go to sleep, it will be set for 76 degrees for the next 7 hours, and then go back to 72. The theory is that it you can fall asleep with the temperature you have set, and it can gradually get a bit warmer during the night, without it disturbing you, plus, it will prevent you from becoming too cold.

* Filter Reset has an LED that lights after every 250 hours of use. When it lights, it reminds you to clean the filter. After you clean it, you press the button to turn off the LED and reset it. Then it will remind you after the next 250 hours of use.

* Clean Air is a built-in Air Ionizer and Purifier. If you turn it on, it will automatically remove dust and impurities from the air while either the AC or fan is running.

* It has two separate air vent openings at the top that can be controlled independently.

* The enclosed remote (2 AAA batteries included) has an unlit LCD Display that shows the actual temperature at the remote, presumably that is where you are sitting. You can control everything from the remote, except the Filter Reset and the Clean Air Filter. A red LED blinks when you press a button. You can also turn Remote Sensing on and off from the remote. When it's on, a corresponding LED blinks on the AC unit to show it's activated. Normally, the unit controls the temperature, based on what the temperature is at the AC unit itself. When Remote Sensing is on, the unit then controls the temperature based on what the temperature is where the remote is located.

Good Points:

* Cools fast and extremely well.

* Very quiet.

* 6 foot long, 3-prong power cord, so you probably won't need an extension cord.

* Remembers your last settings, even if the unit is shut down due to a power failure.

* Auto Fan speed is very nice and is similar to digital climate control in a car, plus you have the other 3 manual fan speeds.

* Sleep feature is a nice touch to prevent you from getting too cold while sleeping.

* Reminds you when to clean the filter.

* Air ionizer is a good idea and makes you wonder, why didn't someone think of this before.

* Very attractive looking unit.

* Remote control adds a level of convenience, but it is the temperature display right on the remote that is an added bonus. Plus, having the unit control the temperature right where you are with the remote is very nice.

* Small and easy-to-remove air filter. It slides out from the top.

* Very energy efficient and the increase in my electric bill is much less than with other AC units I have owned.

Bad Points:

* Can't speak French. (Honeymooners' reference.) ;)

* It's slightly annoying that if the AC is on, you have to cycle it to Fan to display the actual temperature in the room, and then set it back to AC. There should have been a separate toggle button that would allow you to view either the temperature you set or the room temperature right on the AC unit itself. There is a temperature display on the remote, but when I am closer to the unit than the remote, I often use the unit to see what the temperature in the room is.

* The vent is always closed. It's the first AC unit that I've owned that strangely doesn't have a Vent Open and Vent Closed control. A number of my other ACs have Vent Open, Vent Closed, and Exhaust controls. It's not that big a deal, but with all of its other features, I wonder why this very basic control was left out.

* When you press a button on the unit, the beeps are very loud.

* For many people, the Timer feature will be a great thing, but I have been spoiled. The Frigidaire unit I am reviewing is replacing a Carrier AC that lasted me 21 years! The Carrier worked perfectly from 1988 until the end of summer 2009 and then it broke. I replaced it with this unit.

The Carrier was ahead of its time and it also had a timer. It was an analog timer, but it allowed you to turn the unit on or off, at hour intervals, as many times as you wanted over a 24 hour period. That might sound like overkill, but I would use it to turn the AC on one hour before I came home from work and then shut off 2 hours later, just in case there was some emergency and I didn't make it home right after work. Normally, I would come home, the room was nice and cool, and then I would turn the timer off. But just in case, I had the peace of mind knowing the AC would shut off in 2 hours, instead of staying on all night, if I didn't make it home.

You can't do that with the Frigidaire. You simply set a countdown timer and when it reaches zero, the unit will turn on, if it is off, or turn off, if it is on. Also, you have to set the timer every time you use it. With the Carrier, you could set the programmed times once, and then just turn the timer on when you wanted to activate it. Again, this is not that big of a deal and many people may not even use the Timer.

* The major drawback for me and the only thing that prevented me from giving the unit a 5-Star Rating was that the air-directional controls are absolutely horrible. I'm talking about the opening at the top of the unit where the air blows out from. I honestly can't understand how such a nice unit could be so deficient in this regard. They really missed the boat on this one.

All the ACs I've had over the years had very similar air-direction controls and they all worked great. Basically, they all had little handles, where you could rotate the vent flaps either left or right. Then there were also up/down flaps, where you could direct the air to blow upward. The bottom line is that you could control the direction of the air flow beautifully.

With the Frigidaire, they advertise it as 8-way air control. If you look at the picture you can see that you can control the left and right vents separately. So the left vent can be controlled left-right-up-down and that's 4 ways. Then the same for the right vent, makes 8 ways. Well, it sounds good on paper, but the vents simply do a bad job of controlling the direction of the air flow.

Each vent has a knob that you rotate to presumably control the left-right air flow. Then, you can also click each vent either up or down. Well, if you look at the picture you can see that a plastic rod with small plastic circles on it controls the left-right air flow. The problem is that these plastic circles don't go all the way to the top of the unit, so air ALWAYS blows straight ahead, no matter how you adjust the controls. If you adjust them full left and full right, some air will be directed left and right, but the majority of air will still blow straight ahead. To add insult to injury, the up/down controls are totally useless. They don't swivel, allowing you to position them at numerous up/down positions. There are only 2 positions. Straight ahead or you can click them up one notch, which raises them up about a quarter of an inch. They are useless because they only vary the up/down air flow by about 6 inches.

I made a big deal about this because I'm using it as a bedroom AC and it affects me when I'm sleeping. Truth be told, in most circumstances, the air-direction controls of an AC are not that big of a deal. If it's not used in a bedroom, or if it's installed high in a wall or even in a window that's not next to a bed, this should not create a problem for you.

However, as fate would have it, the unit is installed in a window located to the side of my bed. That's where the Carrier AC was installed and when I adjusted its vents, the air would blow upward and to the sides, so it NEVER blew directly on me while I was sleeping. With the Frigidaire unit, no matter what I try, the AC always blows directly on me while I am sleeping and I don't like that. So the bottom line is that this may not apply to you, but it's something you should be aware of. It's really quite annoying that I can't adjust this unit so it doesn't blow on me while I'm sleeping.

Conclusion:

This is a great unit and I highly recommend it, but with one reservation. You virtually cannot control the direction of air flow and it always blows straight ahead. Depending on your circumstances, this might not matter. However, if the unit will be installed in a window next to your bed or next to where you will be sitting, be aware that it will blow directly on you.

The best thing about this little AC unit is the "remote sensing" feature. It has a thermometer on the remote control and can use that as the input for the thermostat, set the remote in the middle of the room and it will keep it at an even temperature. It also has an "econo mode" setting and a "clean air" ionic air filter. It is small, relatively quiet, and the 8000 BTU's do a fantastic job keeping the place cool (it hardly ever runs in econo mode but still keeps it cold). This unit was only $10 more than the equivalent 6000 BTU Frigidaire unit.

Ok, I did my research before I bought this unit. It seems like the most bang for your buck. Amazon.com was VERY fast shipping this to me! I was shocked how fast.

The manufacturer claims that it uses only $59 of electricity a YEAR on average. We'll see. I haven't gotten the bill yet.

The unit has an ionizer and here's what I found about them:

"An air ionizer is a device that is intended to purify the air. As its name implies, instead of using fans and filters, an air ionizer creates ions which remove microscopic particles from the air. Rooms are healthier for those suffering from asthma, allergies, impaired immunity, or respiratory ailments, without as many allergens circulating in the lungs. Dust and mold collects inside heating and air conditioning ducts. Higher humidity inside allows bacteria to thrive. An air ionizer addresses these home and office sources of pollution and odor. The ozone that is created when negative ions are generated battles pollution by breaking it down into smaller, harmless components. Published research shows that high levels of negative ions are a useful treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder."

Then again, a new study conducted by Consumer Reports indicates that ionizers also create ozone that isn't good for you. So who knows? I've been using it.

Pros

* Cools great! Cooled my whole apartment!

* Remote control

* Can use the remote for sensing the temperature instead (nice)

* Easy to install (took me an hour)

* Has an ionizer on it

* Lots of features

* I personally love the sound of the fan. It sounds a lot like a really nice box fan. I sleep like a baby and it downs out the noise from outside since I'm off a busy street. (people pay a lot of money for white noise machines!)

Cons (not enough to deduct a star though)

* No option to use vent to bring in outside air (on the bright side, bugs can't get in through the unit)

* On energy saver mode, it only checks the temperature every 10 minutes (it got up to 80 degrees in here in-between 10 minute checks)

* You'll need weather sealing tape for the side panels (so little bugs don't come in the sides and cold air gets out)

* Smelled a little metallic at first (I think it's the lubrication inside the unit)

Please note: You will probably want to weatherize the room (or your place) the unit is in. This is very easy to do (I put "high density foam tape" around the doors and "clear weather sealing tape" where air could come in around the unit) and makes a huge difference. If hot air is coming in and cold air is getting out, then no normal air conditioner is going to seem good enough. Plus, you lose a lot of money on wasted electricity. That's pretty common sense. If I can do it, anyone can.

CHECK WITH YOUR ELECTRIC COMPANY! I was eligible for a $30 dollar rebate on my electric bill for buying this "green" unit. Every little bit helps!

I don't have a lot of experience with window a/c units, but this little guy seems to do alright. I moved to Brooklyn recently in the midst of mid-90s heat, into an apt with 0 a/c. Units were sold out all over town (except in overpriced specialty stores) so I had this unit rush delivered. The quality seems pretty good, given the relative low cost. I have this installed in my bedroom and it keeps the entire room chilly (68 F) on the lowest fan setting. Another plus is that I've not been bothered by any water dripping inside or out of the unit, which has been a problem of mine in other units.

The one negative I have is the loudness of the lowest setting. I wish there was another setting lower that was a bit quieter.

4 stars instead of 5 due to noise not terrible, but not the best available. Just purchased this unit from Lowes (slightly newer model remote control has been changed to the thin "credit card" sized remote control). About the same noise level as my 2-year old Kenmore 8000 Btu; not as quiet as my 20-year old Kenmore 8000 Btu (I have all 3 units installed and running in various rooms, so can compare). This unit is slightly cooler than the 2-year old unit, about the same as the 20-year old unit. Adjusting the directional vents on this unit is better than the older Kenmore, but still not great (no A/C I've seen has had good directional control). One annoying item for a bedroom installation: there is a really loud "beep" whenever you adjust anything. Would be really annoying to a partner if you adjusted the unit in the middle of the night.

I started with one of these and after a month of satisfaction installed four more. It's an easy two wire installation, although you might want to have some yellow wire nuts handy in addition to the red ones that come with the unit. For some of my connections the red ones were too large. The temperature is easy to read and adjust and we have found them to be very accurate. The temperature rarely changes so they keep the temperature in the room consistent. These units are wonderful compared to the old dial and guess style we had.

If you live in a house that uses 240V baseboard heaters with independent thermostats in every room then you really should use these RLV310 thermostats in addition to window plastic (if you have drafty or single pane windows) and ceiling fans on low speed blowing down to the floor to distribute the heat throughout the room. I just spent the past month and a half experimenting to find the most efficient and cost effective way to heat my home here in the Poconos. I was originally using Aube TH115 type 7 day programmable thermostats and, in all honesty, they were lousy! They were too slow to respond and didn't keep the room temperature stable, thus using more electricity than was really needed. I'm disabled and don't work anymore so fiddling with programs doesn't make sense. Besides, I know from experience that all the energy saved when allowing a room to cool for a few hours is needed to stabilize the temperature of that room once it's being heated again so why not just keep a constant temperature. I had one of these Honeywell RLV310 type thermostats in the bathroom and started experimenting with it in the living room, the largest room in the house. Using an inductive power monitor attached to my mains to get real time power usage data here's what I found out.

The Aube units use what I would call 'brute force heating', sending constant current to the heaters until the target temperature is reached and then waiting for the temperature to drop 1 degree before sending current to the heaters again. This allows the heaters to get cold, making you wait for them to heat up again at the beginning of each cycle. This waiting period wastes money, especially when you have 3000 watt heaters and it can add up to a few dollars over a month. The Honeywell RVL310 type thermostats eliminate this waiting period by sending short bursts of current to the heaters and then `regulate' the amount of heat generated in real time by varying the delay between these current bursts. The heaters never get completely cold unless another heat source, the heat of the sun coming through the windows for example, eliminates the need for the heaters or the house is exceptionally well insulated and holds on to the heat well. The RLV310 type thermostats are extremely sensitive and fast acting, making them much more efficient at maintaining a constant room temperature than the `brute force' type thermostats like the Aube. I just installed 3 of these thermostats in the rooms I choose to heat constantly, the living room, the dining room/kitchen and the master bedroom. After only a few hours I feel more consistently comfortable in every one of those rooms. It's 18 degrees outside right now and I'm drawing an average of 2.5 KWh per hour with 8 kilowatts worth of heaters. It's too soon to figure out monthly savings but I do know I'm going to save a bundle over last year. I'm a newbie to mountain winters and while on budget billing I wasn't paying attention to my electric usage. I didn't know the best way to heat this house and, to make a long story short, I just finished paying my balance in time for the cold weather to come around again. ;-)

As an afterword, these RLV310 type thermostats don't have a back light on the display. No biggie for me but it would be a nice addition to future models.

Update:

After more fully evaluating these thermostats I've run into a situation that I think should be addressed. My mail living area consists of two large adjoining rooms that are on separate circuits, Living room and Dining room/Kitchen. For some reason these thermostats will not achieve a proper balance in this situation. One will always wind up driving its heater far too much while the other ends up rarely providing heat. I've tried switching them around but the problem doesn't follow a particular unit, nor does it occur always in one specific room. These thermostats also get very warm when running the heaters at 100% for an extended time. This is on the side opposite the temperature sensor but I suspect it may effect the reading. In smaller rooms with doors these thermostats work perfectly but in this large dual zone area they don't seem to cooperate well. I can't say that this will happen in every house with this type of room configuration, just that it happens in mine.

Also, I need to retract my original statement about programmable thermostats. I originally saw no value in turning the thermostats down, especially during the day, but I failed to consider the drop in outside temperature during the night. Since the house requires more heat when the outside temperature is lower it indeed does make a significant difference when you turn the unused rooms down at least 10 degrees during the colder portion of the day. The longer this period the more energy you'll save. I set them down from 65 to 50 between 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM. This has cut my electric costs by up to 30% on average. During the day when the outside temp is highest there would not be as much of a savings, if any at all.

I still think these are great thermostats. If it wasn't for the multi zone problem downstairs I'd love to see Honeywell create programmable thermostats that use the same method as these to regulate the room temperature.

I believe this thermostat has a fatal design flaw --at least for our application which is a fairly large room with significant heat loss. I installed this to replace a Honeywell Digital LineVoltPro(tm) 7000 which died after working just fine for several years. The temperature reading for this RLV310 thermostat reads from 1 to 7 degrees below the actual room temperature. (Actual room temperature measured by three different digital thermometers mounted in close proximity to the YRLV310's sensor, all measuring within 1 degree.) One would suggest just lowering the set point, but that doesn't work since the sensed temperature varies so much. Worse yet, the sensed temperature error grows larger as more power is delivered to the heaters; the largest offset occurs when the thermostat is pumping out the most power to the heater. This results in a fatal "runaway" which keeps the heater on indefinitely in our application, even when the room the room temperature get up over 75d and the set point is less than 70d.

Be very careful of the wattage rating for your baseboard heating system. I have a larger family room with 3 different baseboard heaters connected in series. The total of the 3 baseboard heaters is 3500 watts at 240 VAC. This thermostat is rated at 3000 watts maximum. Once it is turned on the thermostat goes "bonkers". The indicated room temperature actually decreases!!!! For example if the room temperature indication on the thermostat is say 68 degrees and I set the desired temperature to 70 degrees, the unit calls for maximum heat and after about 10-15 minutes the room temperature indication actually decreases to 65 degrees. The thermostat is pumping out maximum heat and the unit itself actually becomes very, very hot to the touch. Works well in other rooms where the maximum rating of the thermostat is not exceeded. Just do your homework and check your heating system beforehand..

I purchased this thermostat a month ago. It was not expensive, looks good. I would prefer it to be a little bit smaller, but it is OK. The installation was easy. It has been working fine. I am using it to control a 180W towel warmer that I am using as an extra bathroom heater. The thermostat specs claim that the load must be larger than (I think) 300W, but it is working perfectly with a 180W load. I definitely recommend this thermostat.

Lightweight but powerful with good energy efficiency describes this product very well. It nearly blew itself over on full fan speed! I had to catch it before it keeled over from the force of the windspeed! I am not kidding you! Very lightweight. It weighs about 7.5 pounds meaning it is good for the elderly and sick who cannot lift heavy objects. I priced these at Wal-Mart and Target and even with shipping I paid about $5 less regardless of fan brand name because I ordered it on Amazon.com. I highly recommend this product because of it's power, light weight, and energy efficiency. VERY EASY TO USE. Only one button and one power cord. Nuff' said.

Well I have had the fan for a few months now and I tell you what I like it. It works like any other box fan except it is super light. It is kind of difficult to stand up straight, but you will get the hang of it. What I use it for is to sit in my window and blow air into my room, and I am about to buy another one to blow air out of my room so it can circulate. For a 20 dollar fan you get a good deal.

I actually ordered a different fan from Amazon (Chicago box fan) but received this one instead. In the heat of 110 degrees, I was not sending it back for a replacement!

Anyway, this fan works, but it definitely has its problems. On the plus side, it has cooled down the one room of our house that doesn't get very good a/c flow to the point where it is comfortable to work.

Negative side the high and medium settings are what I would expect, but the "low" setting is like waving a piece of paper.

Should also add that it arrived in the manufacturer's box with some small dents and with the metal finish scratched.

Still running and cooling several months later.

I carry a 220V space heater in my luggage on some trips. The features I desire are: compact, light weight, and a low power setting. I previously had a dual setting unit with a 700 watt option. This was plenty of heat, but I was a little concerned about the risk of fire owing to the fairly high temperature of the air stream. Also, it was rather bulky and heavy and nevertheless not so well built. Eventually it failed spectacularly with a shower of sparks as it welded some parts inside the unit. (Just to be double clear I'm talking there about the other brand that I'm replacing, not about this one.)

This Windchaser unit is as compact and light weight as one could hope for. It is well built. It has only one setting 500 watts. As other reviews point out, this is not a lot of heat. However, I tried it on a cold fall night in a small, unheated Paris room and I was satisfied with it. I was also pleased that the air stream is not scorching hot I guess because the amount of air pushed through is large. It is quiet, but not silent, making a gentle white sound noise.

So my 5-star rating of the unit is based on my fairly specific wishes. It would not be suitable in a use where highest heat output was crucial.

i was looking for a 220v heater for tower guard overseas and this works, but it doesnt pack much punch. Every little bit helps where I am though, so for $20 I'd say it was worth it. just don't expect to be blown away with heat!

I tried two other thermostats (temp too low) before I got this one to replace the failed one in a Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker. I had never measured the temperature of the coffee before the original thermostat failed; this seems to hold it at about 200F which is maybe a little too hot (but it's only 160F at the top of the carafe).

This thermostat has a plain flat back, not the cut-out for the spring clip that the others had and which the Zo uses. So I had to play some games with pliers to reshape the clip and electrical tape to make sure it didn't short where the quick-connect tabs connect in. But that's more to do with the coffeemaker than this thermostat.

Although the thermostat got my Farberware percolator working again, it never reached the 145 degree setting because the coffee pot never shut off. I had to unplug it. Coffee was extremely hot, so I would have thought it had reached its temperature.

I make yogurt at home everyday and we as a family eat yogurt 2 times a day at the end of each meal( lunch and dinner). Its a south indian thing... I made yogurt at home perfectly well at home all summer without the yogurt maker....but the weather in winter at the place where i live gets really cold and even with heat on at home...i was not able to make good yogurt. Then at last i purchased this yogurt maker. This works perfectly. I do the exact same thing with my milk that i used to do before, bring it to boil, cool it down till its just luke warm and then mix some yogurt from the previous day into it as culture and keep it into this yogurt maker and turn it on...and next morning i have perfect yogurt.

This yogurt maker comes with 4 , 5 ounce jars. These too worked out great for me. I make different kinds of yogurt now everyday in these jars. yogurt with whole milk for my kids and yogurt with fat free milk for myself and husband. I also purchased on big bowl from walmart that fits perfectly into this yogurt maker...for days when I need more yogurt when we have ppl over and stuff...and it makes more than 1/2 litre of yogurt......

I usually let the milk sit in the maker for 6 hours to make sweet/non-sour perfect yogurt for daily consumption. But when i need sour yogurt for some dish ( like rava idli) and stuff I let it sit for 8 -10hrs and it works out great.

It consumes very less power, this device comsumes only 11 watts and so haven't seen any noticeable difference in my electric bill too..

this maker makes good yogurt. and the design is compact and looks good. it doesn't take much space at all while sitting on the counter. and the BPA free glass jars even make this model more awesome!

Makes good yogurt...now. On first try I used Trader Joe's 2% milk and Greek Gods plain yogurt as starter, used the amount suggested in the instructions, 1/2 cup i think. I heated the milk & cooled down beforehand, left in for 8 hours. Result was runny & inconsistent setting, inedible and too sour. Second try I used Strauss Family 2% milk and two generous tablespoons of Fage plain, heated/cooled milk beforehand, plus put a paper towel in the machine, under the jars. (I suspect the floor of the machine gets too hot for cultures to survive, don't need too much starter). Result was perfect yogurt after 8 hours, thick & creamy even without straining. Very happy esp since Amazon price was only $18 for new.

I chose this one since it was the perfect size for me since I'm single. The instructions say to use 1/2 c plain yogurt or starter, 4 cups of milk, and 1/4c to 1/2 c instant non fat dry milk powder. I didn't do that. First off, the 4 cups of milk is way too much and will not fit in the glass containers.

I used 3 cups of organic, ultra pasteurized(UHT) milk and about 1 1/2 Tbsp of Fage 2% plain Greek yogurt. If you use UHT milk you don't have to parboil. I wasn't thrilled about using nonfat dry milk so I left that out. Came out perfect for my tastes. I pulled out two at about 7 hours and the other 2 after about 15 hours. I didn't notice a huge difference in tartness but the consistency for the ones that stayed in longer was a tiny bit thicker. I mostly use yogurt for smoothies so I don't need it to be very thick. The consistency reminds me of yogurt you can get in Europe or Asia. Next time I may try using a full fat, organic Greek yogurt as a starter and see how it comes out. I also saw a recipe that uses 2 c milk and only 2 tsps of yogurt as a starter. I just got this yesterday so I'm still in the testing stages but I totally love it so far and would recommend this to anyone!

Why is it most (not ICS) thermostat manufacturers have to make product information so confusing? My old thermostat was located in a hall way in the front of our house. When it ran the heat or AC the front of our house would get nice and warm or cool while we sat in the back of the house sweating or cold. We needed a thermostat that would sense the temperature from a remote location, and also be adjustable from the same remote location. This is exactly what this thermostat doesthe reciever unit mounts where your old hard wired thermostat went, and the remote blue screened transmitter unit you can put anywhere in your house and it will sense the temperature from there sending the data wirelessly to the reciever. Installation was a snap. The installation video they have on their website is really cool. I mounted my transmitter on a wooden base which I can move to my back bedroom or any other room we might be using, it can also be wall mounted.

Sorry but I have to rant about Totaline and Honeywell. I found their websites to be very pretty but completely uninformative about exactly how their wireless thermostats work. They seem to have remote temperature sensors which can be mounted various places in your house but to change temperature you still need to go to the reciever unit mounted where your old original thermostat was, not real convenient. Honeywell had some kind of convenience remote control unit but it only changed certain settings. Most of the sensors and recievers were sold a la cart and I never did figure out what combination of devices I would need. It apperared the cost would be $300-$1000 just for the parts. Niether site has a customer service phone#, all I could find were some PDF's explaining to the professional installer how to calculate his profit margin! Wow. This is a classic example of a relatively simple job that most homeowners can install themselves and Honeywell and Totaline want to make it seem so complicated that you need to go hire a professional installer. Forget it.

I installed my ICS TS820 Wireless thermostat about 3 months ago in about an hour, and I really took my time to make sure I was hooking up the wires right. The transmitter is still on the 1st set of batteries and going strong. so far the unit has worked flawlessly. Finally we can be comfortable in any room in the house. The controls are so intuitive I didn't even have to read the manualThanks ICS. My old Totaline I used to have to get the manual and reading glasses out any time I wanted to make a change.

PROS: Low price. Intuitive controls. Cool blue screen. Easy installation. Programmable for individual settings for each of the 7 days of the week. Copy/paste function. Perfect for houses with standard central AC and heat. Thermostat is very accurate.

CONS: This unit does not have an auto changeover from heat to AC, you can only have either the heat or AC on. I had this feature on my old Totaline but never used it so I don't really consider this a fault, just pointing it out. It would be nice if there was an outside air temp sensor option. It would be nice if the reciever unit at least had a digital readout on it for the temp at the reciever location (It only has indicator lites on it for on, off, etc).

CONCLUSION: Everything considered I would highly recommend this unit. My cons are not really faults, just would be nice's. There are some lower priced wireless thermostats out there but if you read the fine print either they are not programmable or the sensor is hard wired right where your old thermostat went (which in my mind accomplishes nothing). Frankly I don't think there is anything on the market that comes close. Finally we have comfort back in our house.

I feel very fortunate to have returned this item. It turns out that as a consequence of having some reception problems in my home, I found this product has some serious design flaws that could end up costing someone a lot in wasted energy.

Here's the main problem. The device has all the sensing and smarts on only the remote unit. The base unit that controls your heater or AC only listens to that remote and if it doesn't get any new commands, it just keeps doing whatever it was doing last. That means if there is any interruption or failure in communications, your heater or air conditioning could remain on for a long long time.

Here's how I came to realize this problem. I was testing the unit in my home after I first installed it. I found that it didn't seem to have the range to work in the room where I needed it. So, I tested the range in the hallway where there would be clear line-of-sight between transmitter and receiver. Even there, I could only get it to work at a range of about 10 feet. (After I returned it, the folks at ICS claim to have tested it to work at a much longer range, so maybe there was some interference or something in my house.) Anyway, at this limiting range, the remote unit was able to turn on my AC unit, but then it never switched it off. I bumped the temp setting up and waited about 20 minutes, and still nothing happened. Finally, I brought the remote unit closer to the base unit, and it switched off.

Imagine now that you are away on vacation and the battery of the remote unit gets a bit low. Maybe a signal is strong enough to turn on the heat but then nothing else gets through to your base unit. Next thing you know, you get home and your house is like a sauna and your heater has been running nonstop for days. This didn't happen to me, but it seems it could with this design.

My recommendation would be to avoid this model and go for one that has a temperature sensor in both the base unit and the remote. Also, the main control should be in the base unit and not in the remote sensor. There are a few out there that do this. They may cost a little more, but I would think in the long-run they are worth it. After sending mine back, I purchased one from White Rodgers. In my opinion, these guys got it right.

There are a few other problems with the TS830 that are worth noting. First, the touch screen display is rather low contrast and the back-light is dim. Matters are made even worse because the screen easily gets smudged when you touch it. It has a special mode where you can clean it without activating any commands, but who wants to always have to clean their thermostat display? Like I said earlier, I also had problems with the communications range on the unit. I have experienced no such problems with my White-Rodgers unit White Rodgers 1F85RF-275 80 Series Wireless Remote Sensor Kit.

In summary, while I'm out shipping costs for the round trip, I still consider myself lucky. I ended up avoiding future headaches. I'm very pleased with the White-Rodgers unit I purchased instead of this one.

20% of the time it would hang either on or off. Running the thermostat through the manual setpoint mode would usually free it up and it would go back into normal operation. This makes me think the receiver was in range (30 ft. line of sight) but somehow missed the change output signal. The receiver should send a confirming signal back to the transmitter and if it fails, the switch output state signal should be re-transmitted. I got the feeling this was a open loop one way system. It would also loose communication completely and the whole system would need to be powered down and reset. At that point we decided to return it. Amazon return policies are great. UPS picked it up at our home the next day and our account was credited 3 days later. We used this remote thermostat to control a Harman P-43 pellet stove at the far end of our small ranch style house. When it worked it worked very well.

I have spent a considerable amount time looking for a solution to relocate one of our old thermostats and ended up buying this unit. I had it over a year now and it works great! The interface is straight forward nothing complex. Programing it is a bit of a pain, but I did it once and never had to do it again. Most importantly our baseboard heating system is about 150ft and a floor away from the control unit and the wireless works without issues!!! The design saved me lot's of time I would otherwise had to spend running control wires in the walls to relocate the old thermostat. I would buy this unit again, no questions! The only reason I knocked off a star was due to the complicated initial programming, but for most that will be a one-time event.

This product was exactly what I needed. My original thermostat was right next to the washer / dryer and involved heating / cooling the entire floor in order to cool the bedroom where we spend our time. I closed the other vents but that was still a lot of wasted energy, so I picked this up to go to in the bedroom. Install was a breeze, it took probably 10 minutes to get everything mounted. Programming took about 15 minutes (I was confused how the copy function worked), and then I was running my bedroom at a reasonable temperature w/o cooling the entire floor. All told, under an hour to replace and be fully operational. The temporary / quick adjust temperatures is very easy to figure out and it received the girlfriend seal of comprehension

Issues All of these are quite picky and more notes so that you know you're not the only one w/ the issue.

Holding the settings button in the top right for (5) seconds is difficult. The touch screen is finicky about that so it took several minutes to get it to register.

It took me a week to get the LCD unit to snap into place. I kept pushing it back and the last clip wouldnt go and I was afraid I'd break it. Finally I put a screwdriver behind the base plate to keep it from flexing and it popped right in.

If you touch it at night the LCD is BRIGHT.

First thermostat/remote purchase. Using it on a Martin fireplace with great results. Difficulty of installation of 5 if 1-10, just b/c I had to do some minor mods to install the off/on/remote component on the wall and 2 feet of supplied wire didn't suffice. Very easy to operate, and didn't mind that the thermostat is programmed to activate when it is 2 degrees below your set temp and shuts off the flame 2 degrees above the set temp. So if you set it at 71 deg, it will turn on at 68 deg and off at 73 deg. Haven't had the need to use the remote from the lazyboy yet, works just fine setting it while mounted to the wall and walking away. With evening temps at 38-45 deg the fireplace comes on about 3 times for mayb 20 min intervals and then shuts off. It is usually turned on at 6pm and shut off at 10pm. Had the thermostat for 3 months now and very satisfied.

I used this thermostat for one winter on a QuadraFire pellet stove. Install was simple. The unit kept the temperatures in the right zone. Operation was fine for me (Mr Rocket Science), but was not as simple for the other half. I will retrain the other half next season. I did encounter the pellet stove not turning on. I contacted the support via email and had a response in one hour. The batteries had gotten to low and temperature communication had stopped. This forced the stove to turn off and it got cold. I flipped the override on the receiver and we were toasty again.
