I installed these fans about 18 months ago. I installed them into a custom desk that we had built into our motor home. There was no air flow in the desk and our laptop kept overheating. The laptop in on 24/7 (work unit)so it was important for it to function correctly.

This system included a digital readout and a remote temperature probe. The lead on the probe was not long enough so I splice on the same size wires to the length I needed. I placed the probe under the laptop, and set the unit to come on at 96deg.F and turn off at 86deg.F . It has preformed flawlessly over the last 18 months. It keeps the computer cool and we have had no more computer problems associated with overheating.

CoolerGuys are great to work with also. Prompt to answer an email or a phone call. Highly recommend.

I installed this cooling system in my entertainment system cabinet about nine months ago, and it has worked flawlessly since installation. The cooling fans are pretty easy to install, and the instructions for setting up the cooling system on/off parameters are easy to understand. I wouldn't say the cooling fans are completely inaudible, but they're pretty quiet and barely noticeable, especially if they're mounted toward the rear of your entertainment system.

I installed this fan unit inside an enclosed cabinet where I wanted to install my cable boxes, BlueRay player, receiver and video switches. It vents between two studs in the adjacent wall and keeps the equipment cool. The fans are very quiet, and the thermostat runs them only when needed.

I am disappointed in this item. This thing was not cheap so I expected more,

It is very well made but I cannot highly recommend.

Unless you always listen to movies or music at very loud levels,

you will find yourself unplugging the thing as I have.

I know I can replace the fans with quieter ones that run at a slower speed, but for what this cost,

you would think the mfg would have selected better/more appropriate fans.

A good bit of assembly required, but easy enough to follow. The fully assembled heater is quite pretty and throws off a lot of heat. The included remote controls on/off and brightness of the logs and flames, but not the temperature. All-in-all, very pleased.

I received this item as a gift and I really love it! It's as close to a fireplace as I can get in my small home! It's small enough to fit and still get a a comfortable cozy feeling. I agree it does have a hummm when you have the flame on, but easily overcome if you have other noise, ie TV. Well made and not too difficult to assemble.

...I bought this machine for my apartment living room after my landlord refused to install a window a/c unit in it for "aesthetic reasons." (Who cares if it's 100 degrees and your tenant is boiling to death).

But I digress... PROS: The design is very modern-looking and doesn't take up a whole lot of space. It gets cooler and runs fairly quiet. Price of $249 can't be beat! (Bought somewhere else).

I have been running it non-stop from 10am-midnight for over two weeks with no issues.

The machine will turn off when water collects at the bottom; making sure you remove it before it works again. This has not happened to me yet. Running with no leaks or drainage.

CONS: The vents are on the top of the machine, so the air shoots up, not out. Takes much longer to cool a room. It cools my living room/kitchen by about 10 degrees. But to get a better/cooler outcome, I have to run my standing fan next to it so it can blow the cool air towards me. (Hate to see what my electric bill is going to be)!

If you have a smaller, enclosed room with closed doors, I'm sure it will be much cooler for you.

As far as installation, I could not remove the cap from the grated adapter; it refuses to come off. Perhaps there is a trick to it. So I'm not using it. Also not using the window piece to install properly because I have windows that swing open; not open up and down. So my window has to be open for this to vent. Not the best scenario. But okay for now.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes, if you have sliding up and down windows and smaller rooms to cool.

I have a 14,000 BTU dual-hose portable air conditioner, but to use it in my bedroom I have to run heavy duty extension cords from another room due to the heavy electrical load. I researched which portable air conditioners use the least electricity, and this Koldfront model seems to be the winner at only 600W. I bought it specifically for its minimal power requirement.

The little Koldfront works well and surpassed my expectations on what it can accomplish despite only having half the cooling power of the bigger unit I have. It's not particularly stylish but not ugly either. It's really small, so it won't have a lot of presence in the room. I positioned it between the bed and the window and you can barely even see it it's so short. The sound level is decent, and definitely lower than the larger portable air conditioner I have. The tone of the sound is mostly air movement, but when the compressor runs it has a light, buzzy, reed like sound that is not objectionable. It's possible to sleep with this thing running near the bed. If I set the temperature control to a number in the 60's, the room stays between 71-72 degrees, so it seems to have a natural limit of how cold it can make a room. I think this unit is adequately powerful for a small/med sized bedroom, but it may not get a large bedroom as cool as you'd like, and it definitely couldn't handle a small studio apartment on a hot day.

CONSIDERATION:

It's a single-hose design and that means it will be sending some of your cooled room air to the outside. Because of that, replacement warm outside air will come in from around the doors and windows and wherever outside air has a point of entry to the house. Single-hose air conditioners are good if you have central air conditioning and have a problem room, or if you want to keep the thermostat higher in the rest of the house and have one cold room. If single-hose portable air conditioners will be your sole source of cooling in your entire living space, they will not work nearly as well as window units because window units don't cause warm outside air to move inside. Dual-hose portable air conditioners, which also don't suck hot outside air through the cracks, cost more and are usually the largest and most powerful ones. If you are cooling an apartment, I'd strongly suggest getting a dual-hose model.

FAULTS:

The button panel has glowing lights that light up the room when sleeping. You may need to tape something over it at night. It has a glowing orange LED temperature display, and unfortunately the clear plastic cover over the numbers has a texture that makes it too foggy to actually read the numbers. It's pretty annoying and negates the usefulness of the remote for changing the temperature. If you aren't standing close enough to press the temperature buttons on the unit with your finger, you won't be close enough to make out the shapes of the numbers in the fog. I consider this a design blunder and I knocked off one star from what would have otherwise been a 5 star review.

The warranty is 1 year parts but only 90 days labor. If you are trying to research this unit on the web, Koldfront is made in China for Edge Star. The distributor is Living Direct, which is located in America.

Overall, I'm quite happy with this purchase so far.

Hi All..I live on the 5th floor of a 10 unit walk up in NYC. Pros: looks great, easy to use remote, the hose for me worked great in venting to the window, can move it easily per the rollers and easy mount into the window. Cons...I have a 400 sq ft studio, I was looking to have this cool down 200sq ft and it does bring the temp down by 7 degrees or so and that is it despite running it for several hours + ! Also, the cool air shoots up into the ceiling and not out into the room. I think this unit would be good for 100sq ft small room. It is a bit noisy when placed on high which is what I needed. I am now going to buy a window mount unit with 12000BTU.

After reading the rather not so impressive reviews for the Frigidaire 7,000 BTU portable AC, I decided to get this one instead. I wanted a unit that didn't break the bank but could cool my room within a reasonable amount of time. I just got this unit today and I'm doing a "after 2 hours of running it on high" review.

I live in an apartment that has jalousie paneled windows and is overlooked by a property management company that is run by a rather strict person who won't allow me to do much, if anything to my apartment. Because of this, I felt that it was probably better for my stay here to get a portable air conditioner. I am using this for a ~120 sq ft bedroom with an outside temperature of 83 degrees and average humidity of 60-80% depending on the season.

ASSEMBLY

First off, the thing is quite heavy. I don't lift weights, so it was a bit difficult getting the thing to my front door. I strongly suggest using a handtruck or getting the help of a friend if you have to take this far distances. Once you can get it out of the box and onto a floor though, it comes with four casters attached to the bottom to easily roll it to where you need it.

Setup was pretty straightforward. Much like someone else did in their review, I had a hard time getting the exhaust cover off the grill window adapter. You will need a flathead screwdriver to get this thing off. Using my fingers didn't help.

Next, the manual states that the machine is supposed to come with two duct connectors that are angled. Mines came with only one the other side of the duct already had a straight duct connector screwed onto it (which can be taken off if needed). Kind of annoying, but not enough to dock off a point.

The window that I could use to exhaust air was located farther away from the unit than I expected. Just remember, you will be given a maximum of THREE FEET for the plastic duct itself, and you'll want to leave about a half foot of slack each for the connectors (the duct is plastic, hence the necessary slack). In other words, this will probably be positioned directly below the window you want to plug it into.

The window adapter is a PVC panel, but it comes with two extensions if needed. The adapter itself has a fixed and short length that should fit most windows. My jalousies were a bit bigger, so I used one of the two plates to attach it to the adapter to extend it to the perfect size for my window. This should be sufficient for most jalousie window users and also vertical and horizontal sliding windows.

COOLING ABILITY

Jalousie windows don't have the best air/sound insulation. There's lots of little cracks where air will escape/enter into windows and whatnot. This is why it's best to buy a unit that is slightly oversized for your use. As someone has pointed out, warm air will also want to come back into the bedroom you're trying to cool, so do your best to try to insulate as much of the area as possible. I'm a cheap person so I just used duct tape.

So after running this thing for a couple hours with the fan on high in cooling mode, my room which was initially at around 75% humidity (according to my weather application on my phone) and was 83 degrees (according to the LED readout) now is at 77 degrees. I haven't seen it drop any lower. I do run a high end computer gaming machine 24/7 that could be contributing to the heat load, but this unit is supposedly advertised to be able to cool a room that's 250 sq ft, where my room is 120.

That's a 6 degree temperature drop after 2 hours of cooling, which I suppose is okay, but I was hoping it could cool my room a bit faster. I might have to get a higher BTU unit simply because of the inefficient design of the windows in my room.

The vent for the machine pretty much points straight up at the ceiling. In theory this should work as cool hair tends to sink, but since I only care about having it cool *me*, this might be a design flaw that will annoy me, since I would prefer the vents just point at me. I'll probably deal with it once I get used to the way this machine works.

I'd say if my room was slightly smaller, maybe 100 sq ft, this AC would be JUST the right size, but as of now, I would try to find a way to borrow a 7000 BTU unit from somewhere and test it out in your room if your room is about my room's size and see if it'll help any. I MAY consider upgrading to a 8000 or 9000 BTU unit now that I know how this one works. I only run this unit when I get home from work in the evening and I'll probably only run it in the weekends if it gets unbearable, so for my purposes I think this thing is sufficient.

Hopefully this helps you guys make an informed decision about your machine. If your bedroom only contains something simple like a TV and nothing else, this machine is probably great for you, but I'll probably have to get a slightly stronger unit because of the massive amount of heat my CPU generates.

I've had this a year now and I've increased the original rating from 3 to 4 stars because it does what it's designed for but with little to no precise temperature control. I use it often outdoors in the summer for BBQ's but with modifications to meet my needs. My hope was to use the plate warmer for burger and hot dog buns and tortillas. First time I tried that I was serving dehydrated bread to my guests cuz it gets so hot. It would work well for warming plates but the temperature controls are far from precise. It gets too hot to touch and when I turn it down ever-so-slightly, it gets too cold. I continue to use it for a bread and tortilla warmer but I put a small metal pan of water in with the bread which keeps the bread moist but now the new problem arises...the steam from the water condenses between the two glass sliding doors and they stick together. One of the doors just needs to be left open slightly to allow the steam to escape and problem solved. I also have to put a rack or towel on the base so the bread does not make contact with the metal or that too will dry it out. Again, I know it was designed as a plate warmer and for that it would work well but I just wanted to share what I intended to use it for in case someone else has the same idea. Now for the top warming pans. I wrote below that I was surprised to find the food on top is heated without any kind of moisture but what I've found is as long as the food is being replenished and doesn't sit in the pans unattended for more than an hour, it actually works very well. I bought extra pans online so when one empties I can just replace it with fresh hot food. Compared to using hotel pans heated with Sterno this has done a solid job. It's much easier than monitoring the Sterno and protecting it from the wind when outdoors. I hope this helps.

3 stars out of the box. I just unpacked this and because I'm in the restaurant business I was surprised to find that the warming pans on top are not part of a steam table or warmed with water. They are simply warmed by sitting atop the cabinet. It just seems counter-intuitive to warm with dry heat. The manual does state that you should have the items you wish to keep warm already hot before adding to the unit because it heats so slow. Perhaps that's the secret. We'll see. Now for the details. What you see in the picture atop the cabinet is simply a steel frame that loosely holds the hotel pans on the top. The frame easily lifts off and can slide side to side (not front to back due to lips impeding such movement) because it is not attached in any way. If you search for other products from Broil King you will find just the warming cabinet ( http://www.amazon.com/BroilKing-MLW-C-Warming-Cabinet-Family-Size/dp/B0018Z2PL8/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1338279109&sr=1-1 ). That warming cabinet is exactly what you have if you remove the frame and pans and it's $100 cheaper than the unit with the pans. I just looked on the restaurant supply store website that I use and found the pans sans the frame for $8 each. The hotel pans (or chafing pans) are 1/2 pans 2.5" deep (a little smaller than I'd hoped). I bought this for entertaining at my house and have not used it yet. It was on my Amazon wishlist for a year and a half and I finally pulled the trigger because we entertain outdoors a lot and we were tired of later guests eating cold food. The heat control knobs for inside and on top of the cabinet are labeled 1, 2 ,3 and I would prefer temps rather than "I hope 2 is warm enough!". We will be using it this weekend (June 3rd, 2012) and I will report back regarding it's performance. I will monitor temps and hopefully be able to report those as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm pulling for ya Broil King as it is nice to buy an American-made product for once.

I had a Black & Decker D2030 Auto-Off Digital Advantage Iron for the past two years, and since I was not completely satisfied with it (this was really just a convenient iron, not what you need when you have 10 shirts to iron at one time every week) I felt like it was time for an upgrade.

I heard from a lot of people that Rowenta irons are the Mercedes of irons (after all, they're made in Germany!) so I looked into their offers, and come across the Pro Precision, which I had no clue existed: an iron with a separate yet compact base where you can put a ton of water and get humongous volumes of continuous steam!

I have never seen so much steam coming out of any iron, not even from garment steamers, this is a brilliant idea, you literally need just one pass and the garment is completely flat, no wrinkles left, not even the toughest ones! The steam goes so deep into the fabric that I can do two legs of a jeans folded on each other at the same time. Ironing my clothes is the easiest thing now!

Other than the steam which is the main benefit of this product and "benefit" is too soft of a word to describe it, this amount of steam should be called a REVOLUTION :) the iron has two other great features which are apparently unique to Rowenta irons:

1/ a "precision tip" which I had never seen on any other brand and allows to go into every corner of a piece of clothes, like under the buttons of a shirt

2/ an ironing plate with hundreds of holes all over the surface, which all release steam all the other brands I have seen on the market only have a few holes, and only on the sides or at the front of the plate, and they don't even all release steam (makes one wonder what they're for, really).

Other cool features are the fact that you can refill the water base while ironing (makes sense, since the iron and the base are separate) and it has a valve on the side that recollects all the impurities from the water that can build up inside the base over time.

I really recommend the Pro Precision for anyone who wants the best in irons and in steamers, it's like having a dry cleaning service at home! Look at my video, it really says it all.

I like this iron in general. I like it especially for the steam generator ability. However, this is my third iron that has broken and rowenta does not back them up. On all three irons the button that you push for steam has popped and quits working. I would not recommend this iron to anyone.

If you are a quilter, heirloom sewer, seamstress or have to do a log of ironing, this is the best thing you can do for yourself. If you think about it, I've went through Rowenta Steam Irons. Over time, they steam less and less and eventually don't work anymore. This one, with the steam seperate, it won't lime up. Well I have had the fan for a few months now and I tell you what I like it. It works like any other box fan except it is super light. It is kind of difficult to stand up straight, but you will get the hang of it. What I use it for is to sit in my window and blow air into my room, and I am about to buy another one to blow air out of my room so it can circulate. For a 20 dollar fan you get a good deal.

-Won't break if it falls over

-Not loud when on low or medium

-pushes a lot hair on high

I actually ordered a different fan from Amazon (Chicago box fan) but received this one instead. In the heat of 110 degrees, I was not sending it back for a replacement!

Anyway, this fan works, but it definitely has its problems. On the plus side, it has cooled down the one room of our house that doesn't get very good a/c flow to the point where it is comfortable to work.

Negative side the high and medium settings are what I would expect, but the "low" setting is like waving a piece of paper.

Should also add that it arrived in the manufacturer's box with some small dents and with the metal finish scratched.

Still running and cooling several months later.

I bought the Avanti because it was one of the cheapest wine fridges on the market at the time (in 2007) for the number of bottles held. I've come to somewhat regret that choice. Before I start with the problems, I will say it is an attractive cellar. The glass door, the lights at the top, and the shelves look nice. The brown-painted metal walls are similar to regular household refrigerators. The engine/fan noise is definitely present, but it is quiet enough that I keep mine in a formal dining room without a problem over dinner.

Now for the problems:

First, the off-gassing is a serious problem. When I first got it, I cleaned the shelves and the inside fridge walls over and over, aired them in the sun, and left piles of baking soda in it. I still felt uncomfortable leaving my higher priced bottles in it, the chemical smell was so strong. The smell lasted 4-5 months!

Second, the shelving slots and the distance between shelves were designed to only fit the smallest shape of all standard (750ml) wine bottles: Bordeaux bottles (Cab/Merlot/Sauvignon Blanc). With anyone other type of wine, the shelves are a pain. If your bottle is slightly fatter, the next one won't fit in the adjacent wooden slot. If the bottle is slightly longer, you can't oppose necks to stagger bottles in the back row. So instead of 11 bottles on shelf, you may only get 7 to 9 and they roll around since they don't sit in the slots.

The bigger problem is the shelves are too close together, so except for Bordeaux bottles, the shelf above your bottles won't slide well, and it scrapes the labels off the bottles beneath it. The worst case is with some Rhone wines (incl. Syrah), Burgundy (Pinot Noir) and Champagne bottles: you have to remove every other shelf to allow enough head room.

All of which dramatically impacts how many bottles you can really hold. In my mixed collection, I can probably store about 100 bottles.

Finally, my compressor quit after 18 months. It was still under warranty but the company will not pay for labor, just the part, and the part is back-ordered for at least a month. To make matters worse, none of our local refrigeration companies want to service Avanti products. We called numerous companies, and they all said it was an "off-brand". Avanti was no help either they offer no service for the entire states of Georgia and South Carolina.

So, the old lesson lives: you get what you pay for.

I sell wine for a living. I needed storage space fast, and I bought two of these. One broke after six months, couldn't be repaired, and Avanti gave me a brand new one. That broke after four months, and then the other one eventually broke too. I have extended warranties on them but I don't even want to fix them because it's too much trouble unloading all the wine every time they break. If I have them repaired I'd bet big bucks that they break within a year. Two thousand bucks down the toilet. If you want one of mine I'll have it fixed for you on the warranty and you can have it for $200. On top of wasting my money, I can't just throw these in the garbage, so I may have to pay to get it taken to a landfill. They should ban any product coming from china that weighs more than 20 pounds this product led to me to throw out a half ton of garbage, and that's just from one year of use! If I could give it negative stars I would. If I could pay another $100 to make Avanti suffer a fraction of the pain I've endured over this P.O.S. I'd send it in right now. I have had this unit for almost 8 months now and this morning I discovered about 12 bottles had blown their corks. My beloved CA Pinot collection is toast!

The "Set Temp" LED read 58 degrees F. Right next to it sits the "Internal Temp" LED, which read 32 degrees!!!

I took pics of this, and of the blown corks, the frost covered wine collection of 90 bottles or so. But Avanti didn't care. I spoke to a superior manager, but she didn't care and said I saved money on the purchase. Avanti could care less about your wine collection. Do not buy their products if you care about your wine. Simple as that.

The wine cooler does take a number of times to clean before the chemical smell finally goes, but seems to be a well constructed unit for the price. My only real issue is the spacing of the draws and the fact each draw only holds 11 bottles, 12 would have been nice. The spacing becomes a problem if you have wine from different wineries that use non-standard bottle sizes.

They only way this cellar holds 166 is if the wine bottles are a standard size bordeoux wine. Since wine collectors obviously purchase wines from all over the world there is no way to expect this cellar to hold 166. For me it is more like 140. My temperature control is also usually off by two degrees, no bigee but adds to the disappoinment

I love this thing. Now I can see what the Outside Temp & Humidity are before I step out into it.

Most brands tell the Outdoor Temperature BUT display the Indoor humidity, what good is that??? This unit tells outdoor Temp & outdoor Humidity.

I had the Honeywell unit first and was nervous buying this one hoping they were the same. Oh yeah, they are exact copies with only the name on them being different, but the MEADE unit is less expensive. I don't like paying for names.

Remote:

The unit comes with a remote that you place outside. On the remote there is a display that shows the temp and humidity it is reading. So, if you place the remote on a tree or something you now have 2 units telling the temp & humidity. The manufacture recommends using lithium batteries in the remote if it will be used in extreme cold. I've used regular batteries but have noticed that they tend to die quicker in the cold Winters in Michigan faster than the lithium batteries.

Base:

The base unit has a really nice display making it easy to read from a distance. You can mount the base on a wall or use the fold-out stand to sit it on a table of half-wall which is what I do. There is no backlight but I can still read it in low lighting. The base has little pictures that pop-up to the left of the number readings. The pictures provide a quick way to see if it is wet, dry, and even has a happy face when the humidity versus the temp is suppose to be comfortable. The base unit can read from 3 different remotes in different locations. I can't really see using multiple remotes unless you were monitoring 3 greenhouses or maybe your outside/basement/garage? There is also a memory button to read Max/Min values if you are into seeing how hot or cold it got. Holding the memory button down clears the memory values.

Battery:

I change the batteries in the base unit yearly. You can tell when they are dying as the display starts to get dimmer and dimmer. If the remote battery is getting weak a little battery symbol shows up on the base so you know it is time to replace the batteries in the remote.

Remote Placement:

I would recommend placing the remote in the shade under an overhang on you house. Be sure you keep it out of the sun or you will get some wild readings. I don't think this thing is waterproof so I'd make sure the rain, or a spraying sprinkler, can't get to it.

Setup:

Make sure you have the channel on the remote the same as the channel on the base. When you set it up the first time it is a good idea to have the base and remote next to each other.

Channels:

I think similar outdoor units may transmit on the same frequency. Hopefully your neighbor doesn't have one or if they do you can determine which of the 3 channels their unit uses so you can use another. Some of my older units from Radio Shack only used channel 1 so I use channel 3 on mine to avoid this possible interference.

Scan:

Holding the channel button down for 2 seconds puts the unit in the scan mode. The unit will scan between Indoor temp/humidity as well as the Remote temp/humidity devices connected to it.

Range:

The range of this unit for me is about 100 feet from my living room to the front of the garage. The more walls you pass through the shorter the range. Mine passes though 1 wall but if I move it to pass through 2 walls at 100 feet I will get a straight bars for the temp and humidity on the base telling me it can't get a signal from the remote. Think about your wall/window penetrations and distance run when you place the remote and base in their locations.

Overall, I don't regret this purchase. I even purchased one for my parents in Florida as a Father's Day gift.

We've been using the Honeywell branded version of this unit at the office for the last year, so I ordered the Meade version (to save some money) and an extra remote sensor for home. The main unit I received would not pick up signals from the remotes. The replacement sent from Amaazon is working fine, but the QC issue kept me from giving 5 stars. Our house has a 3-zone heating/cooling system, so I mounted the main unit next to the thermostat on the main level, one remote upstairs in the master, and the add'l remote in the basement. By setting the main unit to "cycle" I get temp/humidity readings in all three levels every 10 seconds. Concerns about distance and the range of the remotes did not materialize. They work fine.

Both of my installations have had the remotes inside, so can't speak to ability of remotes to handle outside conditions. The Honeywill and Meade units (both TM005X) seem to be identical except for logo, so seems like you pay for the Honeywell name but get same unit -so just buy the Meade.

It just arrived yesterday; I thought I would share my initial impressions, while they remain fresh in my mind. I'll try to remember to update this later if anything changes.

My bottom line -I recommend it, and would purchase it again. It does just what I want, does it well, and has a fairly simple screen with nice big digits -nice and readable. I am happy with my choice.

Consistency -Very good. I had the base and remote units side-by-side on my desk for awhile to see whether they at least showed the same temperature, and they did -sometimes identical, and never off by more than 0.2 degrees. That could well be round-off error and/or minor air current differences. (Reviews for some other brands/models are not that good.)

Accuracy -I don't have another thermometer to compare against. I can say that the outdoor reading stays within a degree or three of what my computer reports the airport (several miles away) was reporting. The difference appears to just be the airport report lagging. Until proven otherwise, I am satisfied with the accuracy.

[edit (7/5/11) update: I have been constantly comparing it against the thermometer from my Honeywell thermostat for the last week and a half, and they match quite well. This one lags less than the one on the thermostat.]

Precision -0.1 degree -mainly useful to show trends more easily than full degrees would -nice for that.

Functions -Good. All work as advertised. All the functions that I need.

Remote sensor -has a small base, so it can sit upright on a flat surface. Seems like the wind might blow it over, but we shall see. Worst case is I might have to either lay it down, or else wall-mount it. Back attaches with four small Phillips head screws -I presume that is for the weatherproofing -less convenient, but won't matter as long as battery life is good.

Batteries -the product manual advises against rechargeable batteries "Avoid using rechargeable batteries. (Rechargeable batteries cannot maintain correct power requirements.)" Since all I have are rechargeable batteries, I'm using them and they work fine so far.

I note that in the "Battery Safety Information" section they refer to "rechargeable (Nickel Cadmium)" batteries. My hope is that their caution only applies to conventional rechargeable batteries, especially NiCad (since those lose charge even sitting, and might not remain charged enough over time in the thermometer). I am using LSD batteries (Sony Cycle Energy, Sanyo Eneloop, Imedion, etc), and expect that their low self discharge means they will last just fine in the thermometer. I am using the Sony's, but any of the major brands should do as well.

[edit (7/5/11) update: it has operated flawlessly on the rechargeable batteries so far -I'd say go for it. Only time will tell how long they last.]

The following are very very minor points, and do not detract from the 5-star rating:

*) Comfort level indicator -Works as advertised. No problem, but I could do without it. For me, it is just visual clutter.

*) Trend indicator -I have no idea what they are talking about. It is in the on-line description, but I cannot find it in the manual and I have seen nothing on the screen that corresponds.

*) Extraneous -The little thermometer (upper left) and water drops (I presume, lower left) serve no function that I can see. I have not found them in the manual. They have not changed so far. I don't need them as labels -the degree and percent signs are enough -so they are just (minor) visual clutter.

I am not sure if I got a bad unit. I should have read the negative reviews before I got this product. The indoor reading is 8 degrees off compared with two different thermometers including one mercury thermometer. It is showing 80 degrees inside when the actual temperature is 72 degrees verified by the A/C unit thermometer and also a secondary Mercury thermometer.

The Meade customer service was not helpful. I spoke to a person called Christopher. He kept repeating that I should reset the unit. This was the extent of his help. I reset it multiple times. Then I requested to talk to his manager. I was put on hold and then transferred to a Manager. The Manager was extremely rude and told me that there is nothing wrong with the unit and according to him 8 degrees off is normal. He does not want to even consider that there could be anything wrong with the unit. The whole customer service experience was useless. I am sending this unit back to Amazon.

Works well except for slight differences in temperature and humidity between base and remote unit. Remote sender is being used for reporting conditions in my greenhouse. It serves that purpose very well.

It is a real bargain also.
