It's a great "lunchbox" if you adapt your menu to it.

First the description

The lunchbox is a Thermos Jar with a non-insulated plastic top. There are four containers that fit into the jar in a specific order.

-The bottom container is a insulated bowl. It has a gasket sealed screw on top, insulated side walls and a small vent for pressure. The most insulative of the bunch it is designed for soup or other liquids

-The next container is the biggest. It has a slide and lock insulated top.

-The third container is notably smaller and has a Tupperware like pop top.

-The fourth container is smaller yet and has the same top.

You stack the containers in the jar and then clip the top on with little side clips. The whole thing then goes in a nice nylon carry bag that also has a pair of chopsticks in a narrow plastic box. There are little pockets on the side for extra sauce packets or condiments (or I-pod video's to watch while your eating lunch).

This unit is optimally designed for the Japanese style lunch. A soup, Rice, entrée and pickled/salted vegetables. Normally you'd put your soup in the bottom container, fill the middle container up with rice. Your entrée would go in the third and the veggies in the fourth. Since the soup and the rice container both have insulated tops they stay warm. The other containers are not insulated and neither is the top. This allows some heat coming off the bottom two containers to escape so that your veggies are at room temperature. Understanding this is important. Its not supposed to keep the entire meal at the same temperature. Its supposed to keep one part hot and the other part at room temperature.

I've found that in real use the soup container stays steaming hot. The stuff in the rice container stays warm (but not hot) the stuff in the top two containers heats up to room temperature, maybe a little bit more.

Naturally you don't have to use it as designed (soup/rice/entrée/veggie) but departures require a little bit adaptation and creativity. You need to balance both amounts and what you want to keep the hottest vs coolest. Also if you have access to a microwave at lunch it kind of makes this not quite as useful since you could just heat your food up there (as opposed to heating it up in the morning before you go). You could use the whole thing as a cooler (everything remains cold/cool till you heat up what you want). That might be a better way to go if your using it for the office.

The size of the room temperature containers is not large enough to handle American sized sandwiches and breads, so if your looking to take that traditional lunch box stuff this isn't the best unit for that.

If your looking to make the most of this unit you might check out some Bento Box cookbooks. They give receipies and menu sets more in line with what this is designed to handle. In particular I enjoyed the book "Bento Boxes" by Naomi Kijima

Bento Boxes: Japanese Meals on the Go

I'll cook something up out of that and thrown in a packet of instant miso soup for a Japanese style lunch.

Pros-

Compact and efficient use of spaceIt all goes in the tube, no bag full of different containers

Allows for two temperatures in the same container Allows for flexible combinations

Lots of interesting comments from your co-workers

Cons-

Cleanup is a bit of a pain Not dishwasher safe. The soup top is a little tricky at times.

Soft plastic will eventually pick up strong smells/Stains

Two temperatures in the same container Requires a little creativity, doesn't keep everything uniformly hot/cold.

Conclusion-

As long as you understand how it works and adapt it's a great product. Might encourage you to cook a bit more healthy food and eat more vegetables.

I bought one of these not too long ago. I thought it was a little expensive,* but I can see that I will get many years of service from it.

The construction of all the components are very sturdy, and the container is very well insulated. The bag has an outside pocket that you can use to store a napkin (or teabags, as I do) and comes with a detachable shoulder strap and an attached short carrying strap. Inside the bag, along with the thermal container, is a utensil box that holds a pair of chopsticks. Everything is quality construction even the chopsticks, which have a textured surface on the business end of them making it easier for you to pick up food with them. Whoever designed this package gave it a lot of thought.

The bottom two containers are intended for holding rice and soup; the rice container has an insulated cap, allowing you can to store hot & cold items in the same container.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase and would recommend one of these to anyone who needs a lunchbox.

My only complaints (which are minor, but included here for the sake of completeness): the instructions are in Japanese (as if you needed them), and no western utensils (you can pack your own fork). But outside of that, it's a perfect product.

*Expensive? It paid for itself in 2 weeks after I bought it, I stopped eating fast food for lunch.

** It's been 2 years since I bought yet to show any sort of appreciable wear and tear. I love this thing!

*** It's now been about 5 years. Still using it, still in darn good shape.

*** It's now been about 10 years. Still using it. No appreciable wear.

The picture doesn't show that each bowl has a lid. The two smaller bowls have snap on tuperware type lids.

The rice bowl has a thick, insulated lid but it's not airtight. Instructions say to use it only for rice as other contents may spill.

The soup bowl has a twist on lid that has a valve on it. However, the instructions say not to microwave the bowls with the lids on, so I'm not sure why the valve is there.

You're not supposed to put the pieces in the dishwasher, nor put any food directly into the outer container.

My lunch jar came with both English and Japanese instructions.

Honest reviews on Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless Steel Lunch Jar

My daughter, a high school senior who agrees with her friends that the school lunches "suck," is sold on this. She wanted to lose a few pounds, which this has helped her do despite the fact that she now eats a higher volume of food during lunch.

How? She, like all her friends, used to skip lunch and leave school famished, scarfing down the first things she could get her hands on usually high fat, high calorie junk food. This lunch box has eliminated her after-school munchies, keeping her appetite in check all day long. For the first time, she can pack hot (or cold) nutritious lunches at 6:30am, and they are still piping hot (or ice cold) when she pulls it out of her locker at 11:30. Her friends, who good-naturedly mocked her "space capsule" lunch at first, now crowd around her during lunch with their tongues hanging out, jockeying in line for her scraps. One remarked: "Your lunch container is about the same size as my water bottle, but you've got, like, a 4-course gourmet meal in there."

She's lost 10 pounds in the 2 months since she started taking her lunch in the Zojirushi jar, has gained noteriety among peers for having the "best lunches ever," has become more good-natured and less surly (better nutrition), and dances in her seat during 4th period as she waits for the bell to signal lunch period, where she can spread out her containers before her envious yet admiring friends and hold court over her "gourmet surprise" meal, trying to decide what to eat first. By her own admission, she has more energy and better concentration in class and during studies (her grades are up, by the way). She admits it's a pain to have yet one more thing to carry around in addition to her backpack (not that it wouldn't fit, but the backpack is already stuffed tight with books), but swears the payoff makes it worth the minor trouble. As a parent, it tickles me to see this self-described "laziest person on earth" hunkered over the sink at nights, lovingly and painstakingly cleaning out every container and lid (no doubt thinking ahead to the delicious and wholesome treats it will contain tomorrow).

Such a good buy, I bought another Zojirushi model better suited for my 11-year-old daughter. My kids say they will never go back to school cafeteria lunches, and have become much more nutritionally aware and involved in meal preparation. While their friends waste half their lunch period standing in line for tasteless and overprocessed entrees laden with salt, refined sugar and carbs, my kids dine on veggie chili and hot cornbread w/butter, delicious main course salads with homemade dressing, pita sandwiches and hummus, and stir fried teriyaki veggies over whole grain rice. And that's just the bottom 2 containers! The top 2 containers are perfect for fruit, tortilla chips, nuts and/or healthy desserts, all items middle and high schoolers love to eat. I'm thrilled with the product, which is solidly constructed, and which works completely as advertisied, with even better results if you preheat or pre-cool containers for 5-10 mins. We replaced the chopsticks with a plastic cutlery set, which fits nicely upright in the cloth carrier, thanks to the stretch loop on the inside.

NOTE: Like the other reviewer, I too was mildly annoyed at the Japanese-only user documentation, but then called the company at their California office (800-733-6270) and they promptly mailed/faxed English instructions. Don't even get me started on the money this saves by eliminating costly meals out and packaged foods. Excellent, excellent buy that has already paid for itself tenfold.

We purchased the Bento box, based on the good reviews on Amazon, and initially had a good experience with it. The concept is obviously sound (with centuries of testing!), although we were concerned by the apparent flimsy security of the insulated tub "rings" on one container (the little rubber inserts for insulation). The center "plug" fell out after a few weeks use, and would not stay securely inserted thereafter. We called the manufacturer, and were curtly advised that there was NO WARRANTY on the product whatsoever! We were invited to purchase replacement plugs for nearly $3 each, plus $3 shipping, which we did, begrudgingly. We filled out a customer service feedback form online, hoping that perhaps the lack of service provided by phone was an anomaly (It's not so much the additional expenditure that bothers me, as the company's complete unwillingness to stand behind their product. That's disconcerting, to say the least).

UPDATE: The company just called and threatened legal action based on the above review...!? Way to go, customer service! I am leaving 2 stars for the product, but the company behind it gets zero stars. Purchase at your own peril, and in the knowledge that you are paying mor ethan $40 for something that will likely break, and has no warranty for anything but the large outer casing.

Stand fan heater much more powerful then compact fan heater. hot hot hot.. Has to be positioned a distant away from people. Thermostat can be set to desired temp and shuts off after a few minutes reaching the setting.

Cons:

Took a while to figure out how to assemble the base/pedestal part. But once that's done evrything's fine.

I find that in general Lasko products are reliable.

Lux LV1 is a reasonably priced line voltage "Heat Only" thermostat. I ordered the product and it shipping very quickly. The instructions that ship with the device are "limited". But given the simplicity of the device, this should not be a concern. The installation went off with a hitch. I installed the device into a standard single gang electrical box. The device is functioning as expected, which is when the room temperature drops below a pre set value, say 65 degrees, the themostat supplies 120 VAC power to the target load. In my situation, this is a ceiling mounted / fan based electric heater. I have not performed any exacting testing to determine how accurate the thermostat is compared to the actual room temperature. But I suspect it will be sufficient for my application. +/2 degrees. I'll post an update if it falls outside of my tolerance levels.

Honest reviews on Lux Products LV1 Line Voltage Single Pole Heat Thermostat, Sterling

I needed a line voltage thermostat so I could use it as a replacement on a small baseboard heater, I installed in my workshop. I did not want to use one that mounted inside the wall heater. I wanted one which mounted on wall, so when I wanted to make adjustments on temperature settings, I would not have to bend over to do so. I found this Lux thermostat on Amazon, and its design was just the right application, I was looking for. It worked great for my particular application.

I bought this as a replacement for my aging wall heaters. I found it to be a very well made bi-metal switching thermostat. It looks nice on the wall, is easily cleaned, and installation was a snap. All the material you will need comes with the device and it has a well written instruction pamphlet. The only negative issue seen was the scale on the thermostat is not accurate to temperature. But, the LV1 does hold the temperature at a controlled level without over-cycling the heater on and off too quickly.

Of course I had no problems with Amazon and getting it here and I had no problems with the company. I usually don't leave any reviews but I just had leave one this time. WARNING: This item cannot be used in the United States unless you have a converter, 120 volt to 100 volt. In the directions it states that it is only to used in Japan and it has a warning that you can only us it on 100 volt electrical systems. I guess if you live in Japan or anywhere that uses 100 volt electrical then no problems but if you live in the states don't waste your time. If you really want a takoyaki maker get one form Marukai, its the only place I could find one that works in the states. That one also has a flat top attachment for teppenyaki and okonomiyaki.

I would have loved to given this takoyaki pan 5 stars if possible, it's light, comes in a beautiful design and has the easiest cooking ability ever, with just an on and off switch. Unfortunately the item that I got was a dud and I was NOT able to cook a batch of takoyaki as I had hoped and was quite disappointed. The company that sold me the pan AOYAMA was quite prompt to remedy this issue and was gracious enough to issue back a full refund.

I just wanted a basic, safe radiant heater to heat a walk-in closet approx 7ft x 5ft. The winter temp. in there is usually about 48 degrees. This mini radiator seemed perfect given its compact size. Having unpacked the heater, I quickly discovered one of the two supplied screws was useless, so I attached the 'foot' with the one remaining screw which seemed to hold it in place. After placing the heater in the closet, it gradually warmed the temperature at a rate of about 1 degree every 2 hours over the first 24 hours (so don't expect any miracles from this mini-heater). It is now maintaining a temp of about 63 degrees and seems to cycle on and off about 8 times per hour. For our purposes it is doing what we need it to, however, I would not recommend this unit if you are seeking to heat a larger space than about 6ft x 6ft, or if you require rapid heat (unless you are prepared to sit within 2ft of it).

I estimate it is costing about 75c per day to run this thing and it needs to be left on all day because it takes too long to warm anything up if the room temperature is allowed to drop. In hindsight, I would probably have been better off using a larger heater that could be used only in the evening and overnight. We also have a larger DeLonghi EW7707 radiator in another room which is fantastic the trade-off is the larger size of the unit, but running costs could well be lower if it is used correctly.

My daughters room is the coldest in the house so I put it in there. My son is 2 years old, so I needed something safe. This 500 watt unit won't burn anybody. I love that it has no fans since my last space heater had the fan fail and almost catch fire.

Some people complain that this is only good for heating their bedroom 5 or 10 degrees. But that is what a space heater is supposed to do.... this isn't a whole house heater.

My daughters room is 13 feet by 13 feet with two exterior facing concrete block walls. Decent size room with relatively poor insulation, and it does exactly what I need.

Where I live winter lows can get into the teens, so I don't have the harsh winters of the northern states, but I would recommend this unit.

Best Deals on Optimus H-6002 Mini Portable Oil Filled Radiator Heater

I was looking for a silent mini heater which I can place under the desk in my office.

Prior reviews made me hesitant, but I gave it a shot as it was the only reasonably priced mini oil-heater with free shipping.

Well, the foot was attached in a minite with the 2 screws provided and works great for me. I agree that it is not for a large space. I sit right by it.

Honest reviews on Optimus H-6002 Mini Portable Oil Filled Radiator Heater

It is way too small in heating capacity. If you want to heat a very tiny area such your feet under a desk, it would be fine. I think it shuts off way too often. So upon realizing it would not meet the needs, I contacted the company and make long story short was given a bit of a run-around and ended up they would not let me return it. So we are using it since we have it. I would say it is better than nothing.

I am editing my review now. I forgot to mention that when I called the manufacturer early on to say the thermostat did not work correctly that basically I was told so sad, too bad. So I continued to use it and no matter what you set the thermostat on it does not matter; does same thing. NOW THE NEWEST CHAPTER is that I was just moving it over a bit and the on/off button just fell out in the floor. Some other piece also fell out. Even though we didn't like the thing, it was never mistreated. The button cannot be replaced so into the dumpster it all goes. What a total waste of money.

works great in my husband's studio, especially for it's size. Not very big, but does the job. We would recommend it for anyone who needs to heat a contained area.

Best Cuisinart WAF-4B 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Iron, Brushed Stainless Deals

Cuisinart WAF-4B 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Iron, Brushed Stainless Steel
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
Update: Please read review below. I returned the iron I reviewed below and got a replacement sent. It has been 1 1/2 years with the replacement and All the issues I had with the first iron I have with this one, knob falls off, and coating starts to peel. This is a bad product. Read the details below:

I am a true believer in reading reviews done by people who have owned the product for a significant amount of time. Most products seem great when you first purchase them and the same rings true for this. When I purchased this waffle iron I loved it. It has been about a year and a half since the initial purchase. I make my kids waffles several times a week. So I really use it.

Here is the good stuff: The waffles do cook great and I love the timer. I get great waffles all the time thanks to the beep.

Now the issues:

1. The cost is high considering the low quality of the iron. I have cheaper irons that are built way better.

2. The temperture control handle broke within 60 days. I can use it but if falls off all the time.

3. It is a pain in the butt to clean. The grids do not come out and it's pretty heavy so it is difficult to wash.

4. The sides of the handle get really hot and the handle is not sturdy. They may have addressed this with the new model.

5. My newest issue, the non-stick coating is coming off. YUCK! I had my previous waffle maker for 10 years and the coating is still in-tact. Since non-stick coating is so dangerous for your health I am going to be throwing this out. Every time I use it there are more areas where the coating is chipping off. It has never been washed with anything more than a wash cloth, and no metal utensils are used.

I do not think this is a very good purchase. I hope my review is helpful.

We absolutely love this Belgian Waffle Iron. It browns uniformly, and you can make them as light or as dark as you wish. The audible "done signal" is a major plus. The waffles have deep nooks and crannies to hold all the melted butter or ice cream you want to put on them. My daughter asked for them instead of cake for her birthday party. The recipe in the book is really the best one to use for this iron. Enjoy! We do.

Best Deals on Cuisinart WAF-4B 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Iron, Brushed Stainless

I purchased this Belgian Waffle Iron because I have a bed & breakfast and thought it would be perfect because of the speed of cooking as well as the size and the fact that it had a "beeper" on it to remind you that it was ready to cook and then again that the waffle was cooked. It even has variable temperatures. Well, I find that I want my waffles browned, so it's turned up, but the beeper goes off way before the waffle is ready. And it's really loud! So we have all been laughing at this little machine that keeps beeping me!

I had planned on buying a second waffle iron like this because I'm feeding lots of people, but I can't even imagine dueling beepers! It will drive us nuts. The clean up is fine, the storage is fine, the handle stays cool. Everything is great, except that darn beeper!

Honest reviews on Cuisinart WAF-4B 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Iron, Brushed Stainless

Pros:

Good size waffles

Not too big

Works well after break-in period

Cons:

Beep is super annoying (sounds like a smoke detector)

Break-in period required (the first 6-8 rounds of waffles stuck to the surface badly)

Beep/Green Light really has no bearing on when the waffle is done

No way to latch the lid shut

Doesn't store well on it's side at all

Pain to clean

We are a twice-weekly waffle family and have been for years. We are using this maker effectively now that we've gotten the hang of it. Here's our advice:

Step 1: remove the beeper (flip over the device, unscrew one of the pieces of plastic, de-solder and remove the piezo).

Step 2: plan to throw away your first 6-8 rounds of waffles since they just stick to the surface.

Step 3: hold down the handle for the first half or so of the total cooking time or the lid will rise too much, the waffle will get too airy, and the top and bottom halves of the waffles will split apart.

Step 4: wipe the overflowed batter away with a sponge while the waffles are still cooking and the batter hasn't yet baked onto the sides.

Step 5: experiment with temps (we use ~2.75) and timing (you'll want to go well past the light turning green). Once you get the a good pairing, keep your own timer.

Cuisinart really got it right with this 4-slice Belgian waffle iron. Its stainless "retro" styling is truely handsome, and it makes perfect waffles every time with heat variable by you to suit any individual's wish for degree of doneness. But you better get one while there are any left because I've been told that Cuisinart is discontinuing this retro styled model. DON'T DO IT, CUISINART !

I've had this for about a year. Programmed it twice before I got it how I like it, but have touched maybe 10 times since. Twice to put a hold on for vacation. Other times to temporarily change the temp for a Sunday spent setting around the house instead of going out. I live in an old house that is off the ground and this time of year in Florida it's hot in the day and cold at night. I use to forget to change the old one from cold to hot, so I'd get home from my day to a hot house and/or wake up to a cold one often. Never have this issue anymore. I'm about to buy one for my grandmother's house after I write this review. Once I get is set to her liking she will never have to touch it.

I like this thermostat. It's reliable and easy to use. It also lights up in the dark so I can adjust the temperature at night if I need to.

Temperature settings are separated into Weekday, Saturday and Sunday, so if you work an atypical schedule this model won't work for you. For time settings you can select Wake, Leave, Return, and Sleep times. Times are conveniently set in 15-minute increments which reduces the need to keep punching the up/down buttons.

Best Deals on Honeywell TH6220D1028 Focuspro Programmable Thermostat

Rated as a single start initially. After just a couple of months, with temperatures dropping to the teens, we discovered this unit would no longer operate our heat pump. Huge waste of money for purchase and for HVAC service call. (Very poor wiring instructions, BTW; required internet research and assistance to make it work to begin with.) To the credit of Plumbing Planet, however, they did replace it immediately and without question. Three stars but cost us for the service call, which negated its worth.

Honest reviews on Honeywell TH6220D1028 Focuspro Programmable Thermostat

A bit pricey for what it is, but a great product. Was easy to install and program with good instructions, and is easy to use. Seems to hold temperature better than other programmable thermostats I've owned. Very flexible in operational modes and systems it will work with.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Honeywell TH6220D1028 Focuspro Programmable Thermostat

Unbelievable Deal! My HVAC company, who I have a Service Contract with, was going to charge me over $240.00 for the this exact thermostat and to install it. This is the same Programmable Focus Pro Thermostat the HVAC Tech recommended I buy.

The Focus Pro is very easy to operate and program.

It has cut down my electric bill because you can set the temperature for your lifestyle. I think I saved more than enough in the first three months to pay for the unit with how much it has cut my electric bill.

Also I saved about $180.00 ordering it from Amazon and installing it myself vs what my HVAC vendor wanted to charge me.

The hardest part is installing the unit, which comes with good directions. It should go fairly easily.

My old unit I was replacing was the round mechanical one with the mercury in it. II had more wires in my wall than I needed to hook up the unit. The wires did not seem logical from how the old unit was hooked up and the terminals corresponding to it were different than the Focus Pro..

My thermostat was very old, so the wiring and terminals were completely different than the Honeywell.

So make sure when you are taking the old unit off, you mark the terminal with the color wire that goes with it.

Also you may want to get a face plate to cover any holes when you mount your unit.

If you have two or more zone house get the fancier thermostat, the Honeywell model above this unit.

Reviews of Honeywell HZ-2200 Mini Tower Surround Heater

Honeywell HZ-2200 Mini Tower Surround Heater
Customer Ratings: 3.5 stars
Buy Now
Pros:

Small footprint

Heating element well hidden inside the machine

Redundant safety features

Relatively quiet

Competitively priced

Cons:

Thermostat is not as accurate as I like

Not good for "spot" heating, like warming up just the rocking chair area when watching TV.

This heater suits best for heating up small, enclosed spaces (about 14x14sq.ft.). I use it in my bedroom and the result is great.

The air outlet velocity is low and non vectorized by design. It relies on low velocity, de-facto free, convection as a prime source of heat transfer. This mode of heating carries an advantage for not drying skin (Example, a typical hot-air blowing heater acts like a hair dryer!), and heat very evenly within a small area. Thus make this a bad choice for "spot" heating.

Advice the last person who gave this machine a bad rating. You are like complaining about a Toyota Corolla not able to reach 200mph. Please spend some money to insulate the place and buy a bigger heater, or two for your application.

The unit was solidly built, has overheat and tip-over sensor, and the heating element was located in a remote location and it's impossible to touch. Therefore, it scores really high on safety. However, please use common sense when using this unit (keep the unit away from small children, moisture, water, drapery...)

The unit uses a "Mechanical" thermostat and it does not control the room's temperature very well. It would be better for Honeywell to change it to a digital thermostat.

Conclusion: Use it for what it's best for (small, enclosed space or 14x14 sq.ft.), and you will not be dissappointed.

This little unit works very well in my bedroom and heats up very quickly just on the low setting. In the living room I've used it on the high setting and it also works pretty quickly. I use this unit when I am the only one who is cold and don't want to use the central heat. I really like the option to use 360/ front function and the thermostat capability. As per the directions, you turn on the unit with the thermostat on full heat and when the temperature is as hot as you want you slowly turn it down until the unit clicks off. Then it will automatically shut on and off to keep that temperature. My only complaint, which is why I didn't rate the unit 5 stars, is that it is too noisy for me. I mostly wanted this unit for nighttime use and when the unit clicks on and off it wakes me up.

I plugged this in yesterday for the first time. It seems very safe. The ON nob has a childproof turn system. At the hottest temperatures I can still pick the heater up by the metal grate. Most impressive is how fast it heats up. As soon as it turned on I felt a lot of heat, as if it arrives from the factory with hot air waiting to blow out upon first use. It has a little bit of the "heater odor", like when you turn the heat in the car way up. It heat my room up really fast, but it's a small-medium sized room. I looked around a lot for heaters and read a lot of reviews. This one worked out perfectly for me; I am very happy with my choice.

Honest reviews on Honeywell HZ-2200 Mini Tower Surround Heater

I have a 2 bedroom apartment outside of Boston. When the temperature outside drops below 20 degrees or so, the interior temp. struggles to remain above 60 degrees or so. I have deployed three of these great heaters in my apartment and the temp. now can get well above 65 when it is really cold outside.

A+ machine, sleek design, definetly not ugly and will get the job done.

The concept of this heater looked great, but it has one fatal flaw--the thermostat. It seems to think the room is much hotter than it actually is. As a result, even at the highest setting it shuts off after a short period of time. Yet the room is still cold--and there's no way to turn the heater back on. You basically have to wait 20 minutes for the heater to "cool down" enough to work again. We basically don't use it, and we went out and bought another.
