I recently purchased and returned a round Honeywell thermostat (model CT87N1001) because it wasn't accurate. In addition, the built-in thermometer was off by several degrees and it couldn't be adjusted. Finally, unlike the older Honeywell round models that were completely mechanical, the new one contains a lithium battery that's not consumer replaceable. This means that when the battery dies, you throw the thermostat away and purchase a new one. Thanks Honeywell, but no thanks.

What I wanted was a simple, non-programmable, mechanical thermostat that didn't need a battery. The White-Rodgers was exactly what I was looking for. It's accurate, simple to operate, and it doesn't need a battery. And yes, you can easily adjust the built-in thermometer with a screwdriver if necessary.

Great thermostat. Easy to install. Easy to use. No batteries required. Fully mechanical. And best of all it works flawlessly. Vendor handled my order in an excellent manner. I would recommend this vendor. I am very satisfied with the product. I highly recommend it.

The installation was not bad. Instructions to instal were very good. Even though the specs say its operation range is between 50-90 degrees Farenheight, it works very good upto 72 degrees F. Above this range the operation is erratic. My old thermostat had mercury switch and it worked very good for 30 years but they are discontinued. I was able to set the old one to any rage of temperatures I wanted.

It may be that new environmental standards prevents it to operate above 72 degreees F. I don't know. I am still trying to adjust heat anticipator. I will appreciate if someone with more experience in this matters will comment on this. I was going to install Honeywell automatic thremostat but my system would not take automatic switchover from heat to cool and vice versa. My central hvac is 15 years old.

Honest reviews on White-Rodgers 1F56N-444 Mechanical Heat/Cool Thermostat

It works. It was somewhat harder to install than it should have been because the design was unnecessarily complicated -it has a three-piece design, when a two-piece design should be all that is really necessary. If I have to get out an ammeter to test the wiring, I'll have to pop off the top AND unscrew an intermediate piece (not just pop off the top like with most thermostats) due to this unnecessarily complicated design. But, all-in-all, it works. It seems more solid than the competing models from Honeywell, but the Honeywell's are better designed for a smooth installation and easier on-going maintenance.

Arrived promptly.

Instructions (diagram) made installation simple.

Easy to read, clean design, thermostat works great.

Can't comment on durability as I've only had it for a month.

I have owned 3 of these heaters. They last about 2 years and effectively heat about 800 sq ft. The company has great customer service. I set the thermostat and leave it alone. My house is 1200 sq ft, open rambler. The sole source of heat was propane, which is expensive. The propane stove is set to come on when the temp in the house drops down to 64, which is at night. The heater is in the living room and keeps the house at 68 during the day when I'm gone. When I'm home I set it to 70. Do not set the Comfort Zone at the economy mode as it will run none stop. Set it at the middle mode and then it will be energy efficient and turn off when it reaches 1 degree above the setting and will turn on when it falls 1 degree below the setting. The Comfort Zone is more efficient and costs less to run then my friend's Edenpure Amish heater that cost twice as much. It keeps about 800 sq feet warm, the outer areas are cooler. I don't remember exactly what the cost per hour is but it isn't much. The power is on 24/7 from about Oct through April and costs about $20 a month compared to a tank of propane at an average of $500 a month. Before the Comfort Zone I was having the propane tank filled every month from Oct through April. $20 vs. $500, it is well worth the savings. I have a separate Comfort Zone in my sunroom which isn't heated. It comes on in the late evening and keeps the sunroom at 60 otherwise it drops to 44. I've had black, walnut, and cherry they all work the same. I recommend them to all my friends. The one drawback is while they keep the house at a consistent temp, they do not permeate the heat like propane does. Again $20 vs. $500, it is well worth the savings. Read the manual and clean it the way it says to so it keeps running efficiently. I live in the Pacific NW. Hope this helps.

Use this mostly to prevent pipes freezing and sometimes working in a standalone gararge. Puts out good heat and appears to be a well built unit. Only complaint is the thermostatic control. Very hard to set with any accuracy but I just err on the side of more heat (only reason for lack of 5 stars). It's a 30 amp heater but it will pop my 40 amp breakers after running a couple of hours. This is probably my problem, not the heaters since I think it would happen much sooner if the heater was drawing that much current.

Good price...good heater...in fact I ordered the 20 amp and they sent me the 30 amp...even better !

Best Deals on TPI Corporation HF686TC Fan Forced Portable Heater, 5600/4200W

The 30 amp model is 5500 watts. I used this in an apartment building so the pipes would not freeze. it will go on and off by itself due to an internal thermometer. I had it set very low and was economical. I am going to use this in my basement at my home next winter. This heater is good for low ceiling applications and not high ceiling applications. It is good for about 1600 square feet. Probably could heat your whole house but would be expensive on maximum power. I am going to use it in the basement of my house for below zero days. This will keep you warm but keep in mind it will cost a lot on full power so try to run it on half power. if you have high ceilings, forget it. the blower will not blow hard enough to keep high ceiling areas warm such as you would find in many commercial applications. you will need a thirty amp breaker and outlet for a 30 amp plug installed.

This is a simple, accurate, indoor outdoor thermometer. The outdoor sensor is neat and appear water tight.

The indoor display (with integral sensor) is easy to read and small enough to be unobtrusive.

Before rating, I checked accuracy with three regular thermometers and an extremely sensitive/accurate Casio Pathfinder. This device got A+ for both consistency and reliability.

In my seller review, I mentioned that the black part around the screen had very small scratches (not visible without very close inspection) and I got an email from the company expressing their concern and wanting to make things better. Very nice to deal with a company like this. And they have all good reviews as far as I can see.

The thermometer itself works very well and is easy to use . I like this one because it's simple. I just want to know the temp indoor and out. Some people say it's too small but you can see it easily from across the room.

Best Deals on Ambient Weather Wireless Thermometer with Indoor and Outdoor

The product comes in a small box with plenty of protection inside. A minor point, however, is that there is no removable plastic film on the front of the unit so it arrives very lightly scratched. Not a big deal but its something.

You will need 4 AAA batteries in total. two for the inside part and two for the outside part. Longer batteries can be a tight fit. The amazon basics rechargeables just manage to squeeze in.

I have tested the Amazon Basics AAA rechargeable batteries with both parts (they are good for cold weather as well & slow discharge). They have performed as well as I expect any battery to. They were thus only charged once in over a year (and that was for testing a small problem). The outdoor sensor and batteries also continued to work through the coldest of nights here with the lowest in the teens.

The problem stems from moister. I do not have it in the best location (a location that isn't recommended by the manufacture) and every so often when it rains the outdoor sensor disconnects. Not every rain. Anyway, no problem. Bring it in, take the batteries out, let it sit for an hour, and put it all back as it was. Keeps on going.

So all you have to do to get everything working is to:

Take both units out of the packaging.

Open the battery compartments with your finger.

Install the batteries.

Seperate them about 5 feet or a bit more for testing (indoor).

After testing, place them where you want and that's it.

So the idea is to test that the outdoor sensor is four degrees or less different than the indoor sensor. This makes sure they are working correctly. The sensors are correct within 2 degrees each, so max of four, of actual temperature...

Tested the indoor sensor next to one of those wall gps weather stations and after about 1/2 hour they both read the exact same indoor temperature. It takes up to 1/2 hour for the temperature to settle.

The outside part isn't water proof and I personally don't think anyone should be expecting it to resist mother nature like its some kind of miracle sensor especially at its price. However, I can't see why a weather proof sensor can't be constructed. There are weather proof sensors on my a/c condensors and they work great.

The indoor sensor is sensitive. You'll want to place it where there's the least fluctuation of temperature or perhaps more importantly where you are the most interested in knowing what the temperature will be.

I haven't tested it much, except for 1/2 hour, but it appears the outdoor sensor works fine at 25' from indoor sensor with no line of sight.

Other infomation:

Indoor part measurements 3.5" x 2.5" x 0.75"

Outdoor part measurements 2.5" x 2" x 1"

There's a hole for screw mounting to a wall (both indoor and outdoor).

The indoor sensor has a pull out stand.

The outdoor sensor is able to stand on its own (for temperary use).

Range for outdoor sensor is up to 120 feet (line of sight).

Works at 433MHz.

Battery life 24+ months

1 year warranty.

So the end result is that the temperature is accurate enough for satisfaction. I do recommend if your searching for a cheap indoor and outdoor digital temperature gauge. If in time that changes, I will update this review. As of right now, with 14 months of use, I would buy another if a second were needed.

** Battery update ** July 2013

So the indoor unit wasn't keeping the outdoor temperature lost it after a few hours. Tested recharge of amazon basics batteries in outdoor unit and no effect. Tested recharge of amazon basics batteries in indoor unit and success.

The batteries lasted about one year and a couple months before having not enough charge for normal use.

Had also swapped the batteries in both parts and that had failed as well, so batteries in both needed recharging. A test of non-recharged batteries in indoor unit and charged batteries in outdoor unit left a test of recharging indoor unit batteries which was successful. Also ruled out interference by moving them close together which was unsuccessful. Outdoor unit is working properly.

Honest reviews on Ambient Weather Wireless Thermometer with Indoor and Outdoor

I bought this as a replacement for the disappointing Acu-Rite 00782A2 Wireless Thermometer I had, and to be honest the inexpensive price was my key reason. I like having the ability to see the temperature outside in my bedroom before I head out to walk the dog or at other points during the day. The sending unit is fairly small and unobtrusive, although the occasional LED flash startled me one night. The receiver is attractive and relatively small with a pop out stand that allows it to sit on a desk, table, or nightstand. One major drawback however is that the receive has only a two digit readout. If it's over 99 degrees all you get are two dashes, which initially made me think the sending unit was again malfunctioning. It wasn't...it was 106 outside. And in all honesty this points out the silliness of giving me temperatures to a tenth of a degree...I don't really care about the tenths...I'm not checking my own body temperature and I doubt there's people who need THAT much precision in temperature...I'd rather it read out to three digits. There also is no reset function on either the sending or receiving unit; one of the few things I liked on the Acu-Rite 00782A2 Wireless Thermometer. You get what you pay for, and for what I need this is OK, not the greatest, but at least not the battery eater the Acu-Rite 00782A2 Wireless Thermometer was. It has its flaws, but I'm not about to spend a huge amount of money for something that by and large is a convenience item.

First Ambient weather instrument ordered ever, but exceeded expectations for the specs. I have a $600 Davis Vantage Pro 2 professional weather station and needed a simple wireless thermometer as a backup if ever needed. The specs for this items shows +2 degrees, but this thing is within .5 degrees of my professional weather station! Wow.

Need to give it 24 hours for thermometer to orientate itself to the outside for best readings, but after that it is .5 of true temps.

Wish it had Max/Min recording, but other than that, I would highly recommend this item for anybody that likes accurate weather temps.

Just remember that where you put your thermometer will dictate how accurate it is. Best in shaded areas on a north side of a building or home, away from any direct sunlight or artificial heat or cold sources, or where excess heat or cold could accumulate.

Living in the heart of Sun Valley where temperatures reach 120 degrees, I never thought I would need an old friend used back east in Northwest Connecticut. Unfortunately there are frozen nights in Phoenix. This works perfectly to protect the 1 1/2 feet of exposed water main pipe. Wraps easily and stays in place keeping out the frost. It does not get too hot either, so no melted plastic valve pieces. You'll need an extension cord but for the few days we need one this saves a ton of money in repairs.

This cable was easy to install and works like a charm! Haven't had a frozen pipe since I installed it.

I underestimated the wattage I needed for a job other than pipe protection. I wanted to lay it on the floor of a generator cabinet housing to keep some warmth in it and drive out any moisture to prevent rust and allow it to start easier. It would work great for pipes, but I need more wattage. Good product and looks well made.

Salamander Chameleon Active Cooling Rear Panel for 30-Inch-Tall Reviews

Salamander Chameleon Active Cooling Rear Panel for 30-Inch-Tall Cabinet
Customer Ratings: 5 stars
Buy Now
I recently purchased a Salamander Chameleon 336 in "Oslo" trim and it is amazingly well built. I've had lots of other AV cabinetry and stands but this is my first Salamander and I have to say that they absolutely worth the price. This accessory active cooling rear panel is no exception. While you might balk at how ridiculous it sounds to spend nearly $200 on a simple panel with fans on it, think about what it does to protect your electronics. If you have an amp, receiver, or other heat-producing component, this is a must in lieu of the plain non-actively ventilated panel that came with the cabinet. Even if you have ample space around your separating your electronics inside the cabinet, stagnant air trapped on all sides including the rear can build-up a significant amount of heat and will cause long-term damage to your components. Trust me on this: I had a previous Denon receiver fail on me due to my disregard for proper ventilation.

Unlike the standard non-cooling panels that come with all Salamander Chameleon cabinets, the plastic on this active cooling panel seems to firmer and doesn't have a curvature built in to it. While this requires a bit more muscle to squeeze it into place, I'm assuming this was necessary to accommodate the mounting points of the dual fan unit. Once installed, the fit is perfect. However, Amazon's product image is misleading in how the fans are installed on the 30" tall version. The 30" tall active cooling panel I received has the fan unit mounted in the center, almost in line with the pinch tabs on the sides, and not at the top edge of panel like the Amazon's image shows. In my case, it actually works out very well because I have a source component at the top shelf while the amp at the bottom of the cabinet, which in this configuration provides more cooling for the amp since it needs it more. No complaints here. Perhaps the image is an older one and Salamander received customer feedback that pointed out how most people place heavy amps and receivers at the bottom of big cabinets anyway? It's definitely a welcome modification because I originally purchased the extended version of this active cooling panel that provided an extra 3" of rear clearance for large amps but that unit had the fans mounted at the top which wasn't ideal for cooling my amp sitting at the bottom with a shelf above separating it from the fans and partially blocking airflow for it. After I switched from a Yamaha receiver that was 18" in depth to a Denon that was only 16" in depth, I no longer needed the extra clearance of the extended version so the better fan placement was a welcome surprise.

Installation was a snap, literally. It really just snaps into place after you squeeze in the pinch tabs. No tools or hardware to fuss with, unlike the extended version. It basically mounts like the standard non-cooling panels. There is wire on the inside with a spade terminal that you can either attach to a component's casing screw or use the included magnet cube to secure it to the hottest part of the component or amp. This is a thermistor that will activate the fan speed based on temperature. Even at maximum speed, the dual fans are relatively quiet yet seem to move lots of air. With the door closed, the fans are virtually silent from in front. For power, there is a wall wart and cord that you connect to the fan on the outside. Hard to see where it connects to at first but once it's in, you should've have to unplug it again so no big deal. When the systems is powered-down for a while and everything is cool, the fans shut off automatically.

Be wary of which one you order. There is a 20" version of this for shorter cabinets that will only work with 2xx units. This 30" should fit in any one section of Salamander Chameleon 3xx units.

I love the heater. I have different heaters propane torpedo heaters (garage), oil and ceramic heaters with thermostat, w/o thermostat and digital. We have them all!

This heater does an excellent job! I have one for one of my clients because it can be very cold in the summer months. I can direct the heat. (I hocked this from the great room. I am buying another one.) The passive, space heater takes too long. The heat rises and the ceiling fans have to redirect the heat downward. Otherwise the air at the ceiling needs to get warm first and work its way down. (I have 12 foot ceilings in that room.) With this heater, the heat is directed at the couches while we watch TV.

One problem: the circuit breaker will trip with 2 heaters. If we want 2 heaters, we have to run only run or run an extension cord from another outlet on a different circuit.

One benefit: The settings knob goes from off, fan, low and high. The fan setting is to cool the heating element before turning unit off.

NOTE: The bedrooms have oil heaters with a thermostat. The temperature is different in each room depending on the child. The hallway bath has one also with an "agreed upon" temperature. In the master bedroom, the oil heater is on a timer since my wife and I work. It comes on between 5:30 and 6:30 and also between 7:30 and 8:30. We may get this heater in the master bedroom to this heater and direct it at the shower stall.

I just wanted a basic, safe radiant heater to heat a walk-in closet approx 7ft x 5ft. The winter temp. in there is usually about 48 degrees. This mini radiator seemed perfect given its compact size. Having unpacked the heater, I quickly discovered one of the two supplied screws was useless, so I attached the 'foot' with the one remaining screw which seemed to hold it in place. After placing the heater in the closet, it gradually warmed the temperature at a rate of about 1 degree every 2 hours over the first 24 hours (so don't expect any miracles from this mini-heater). It is now maintaining a temp of about 63 degrees and seems to cycle on and off about 8 times per hour. For our purposes it is doing what we need it to, however, I would not recommend this unit if you are seeking to heat a larger space than about 6ft x 6ft, or if you require rapid heat (unless you are prepared to sit within 2ft of it).

I estimate it is costing about 75c per day to run this thing and it needs to be left on all day because it takes too long to warm anything up if the room temperature is allowed to drop. In hindsight, I would probably have been better off using a larger heater that could be used only in the evening and overnight. We also have a larger DeLonghi EW7707 radiator in another room which is fantastic the trade-off is the larger size of the unit, but running costs could well be lower if it is used correctly.

My daughters room is the coldest in the house so I put it in there. My son is 2 years old, so I needed something safe. This 500 watt unit won't burn anybody. I love that it has no fans since my last space heater had the fan fail and almost catch fire.

Some people complain that this is only good for heating their bedroom 5 or 10 degrees. But that is what a space heater is supposed to do.... this isn't a whole house heater.

My daughters room is 13 feet by 13 feet with two exterior facing concrete block walls. Decent size room with relatively poor insulation, and it does exactly what I need.

Where I live winter lows can get into the teens, so I don't have the harsh winters of the northern states, but I would recommend this unit.

I was looking for a silent mini heater which I can place under the desk in my office.

Prior reviews made me hesitant, but I gave it a shot as it was the only reasonably priced mini oil-heater with free shipping.

Well, the foot was attached in a minite with the 2 screws provided and works great for me. I agree that it is not for a large space. I sit right by it.

Honest reviews on Optimus H-6002 Mini Portable Oil Filled Radiator Heater

It is way too small in heating capacity. If you want to heat a very tiny area such your feet under a desk, it would be fine. I think it shuts off way too often. So upon realizing it would not meet the needs, I contacted the company and make long story short was given a bit of a run-around and ended up they would not let me return it. So we are using it since we have it. I would say it is better than nothing.

I am editing my review now. I forgot to mention that when I called the manufacturer early on to say the thermostat did not work correctly that basically I was told so sad, too bad. So I continued to use it and no matter what you set the thermostat on it does not matter; does same thing. NOW THE NEWEST CHAPTER is that I was just moving it over a bit and the on/off button just fell out in the floor. Some other piece also fell out. Even though we didn't like the thing, it was never mistreated. The button cannot be replaced so into the dumpster it all goes. What a total waste of money.

Be careful when ordering this Item. I was shopping for a programmable thermostat when I ran across this item. I thought it would be great to see the outside temperature displayed when checking my thermostat. I purchased a Honeywell RTH8500D thermostat to use with this sensor. The thermostat was on sale and the Amazon web page for the sensor indicated it would work with the thermostat. I copied and pasted part of the technical details from the web page for the sensor below:

"Technical Details: Outdoor temperature for display on the T8600 or T8500 family thermostats."

Or link to the page: Honeywell C7089U1006 Outdoor Temperature Sensor [Misc.]

After receiving, programming and starting the installation process, I discovered the sensor would not work with the thermostat. The thermostat sub-base lacks the terminals required to connect the sensor wires. I downloaded additional installation instructions and discovered a TH8320U1008 VISION PRO 8000 thermostat is required for the sensor feature. I returned to the sensor web page and noticed the reference to the VISION PRO thermostat was listed. Trouble is it also advises it works with the T8500 family thermostats. It does not. I returned the thermostat to Amazon and ordered the correct unit. However it costs more and Honeywell won't warranty it unless it's installed by a PRO. They don't define what a PRO is. Anyway it's very easy to configure, install and program. The creature's been operational for several weeks now and I'm pleased with It's performance. Amazon treated me very fairly with this issue, but the error is still on the Amazon web page for the sensor.

Really appreciate the chart with the resistance/temp values. Leads are too short, though, and will not fit into the S1/S2 terminal blocks on the Honeywell 8000 series thermostats without stripping away some of the strands to make the conductor pack thinner. Overall, though a quality product.

The Honeywell C7089U1006 Outdoor Temperature Sensor was easy to hook up and install, but a little more $$ than I really should have paid, I put this in when I installed the new programmable thermostat. Now I have a reference to the outside temp at the thermostat. I don't know if they make a compatible cordless remote, which would be easier, but this one, so far seems accurate and operable. Plan on splicing the contact lines, however, as the leads are only 6 feet long
