I use the Air King 8605 to raise the room temperature of my bedroom from 60 degrees to 70 degrees. It works great! There's no fan, so it's noiseless. The upper grate does get hot. I can put my hand on it, without getting burned, but I'd avoid putting it anywhere where small children might touch it. It does put out over 5000 BTUs of heat when turned all the way up, so be prepared for your electric meter to spin.

I have four of these. They are quiet and work well. In fact, they are silent. We use them to heat bedrooms when using the pellet stove in the main part of the home. The thermostat works well, but doesn't tell you the specific temperature, but once you find the correct setting you just leave it. Excellent heater. Nice looking. Quiet--in fact, silent.

I read all reviews before purchasing and knew going in about the first 4 `Cons' I've listed, but I was okay with that. What I had not read anywhere was `Con'# 5 (the unit's inability to get as cold as documented), so I will focus on that...

First things first, the manufacturer (Wine Enthusiast) states the internal temperature range is 50 66 F +/7 degrees. Although they state the proper temperature for both whites and reds is between 53 and 57 I have to disagree. I have read and discussed with many `wine enthusiasts' (wine makers, store owners, and drinkers) the proper chilling temp for white is 45 47 F. I `assumed' (bad idea) that I could set each side at 50 F and expect to have the lower sections reach 43 F. Therefore I could chill whites on the lower shelves and reds on the upper shelves. I figured this would meet my needs and decided to purchase the unit.

I ordered the fridge from Amazon and received it within days. I anxiously unpacked it, plugged it in, set the temp to 50 F on both sides, placed a couple tester bottles in it from my other chiller and waited. 24 hours later I grabbed the bottles and tested the bottle temp (using an infrared thermometer used to test surface temperature). To my surprise the lower bottles on each side were only 54 55 F, while the upper bottles were as warm as 59 F. Thinking my gun needed calibration I decided to test the internal temp of the unit. I placed two thermometers at the bottom of the left side (one digital and one analog/liquid) and waited another 24 hours. I checked each thermometer and sure enough the left side was only getting as low as 54 degrees (I repeated the test on the right side, same results).

I phoned Wine Enthusiast and they told me to unplug the unit, wait a couple hours, and plug it back in to `reset' the thermostat. I did that and conducted the same test (with all three thermometers) 24 hours later and received the exact same results. I called back the next day and spoke to a technical representative who said possibly a board was bad and they would ship me another unit.

The shipment came about a week later and again I conducted the same tests. This time the temperature range was 51 53 F (lower section to upper section, respectively). I checked the temperature over the next several days and it never wavered (51 F lower section, 53 F upper section both sides). So although the temperature was steady it was not cold enough to truly `chill' white wine.

After contemplating my options I decided to keep the unit and store only reds in it. I think it would be fine for storing whites as well but not for chilling. I have another unit that goes as low as 41 (actually tested at 37 F) so I use that for my whites and the Wine Enthusiast for my reds.

Solutions for common issues:

To resolve pinot bottle storage, I remove the top rack and store pinot bottles on the next available rack (only 2 per side will fit comfortably) but this reduces total capacity by 8 bottles. The top rack is pretty much useless due to its proximity to the thermostat anyway.

To resolve the scraping, I use a 3 2 3 configuration. I flip every other rack upside down and this prevents scraping (but it reduces the storage capacity by another 6 bottles).

Bottom Line, there are a lot of bargain wine `cellars' out there and from what I've read all have issues. However, I would not recommend this one to anyone wanting to chill whites. If you only want to store reds then maybe this is for you, but don't be fooled into thinking it can store anywhere near 48 bottles (I think the total is closer to 32).

Perfect for the not-so-snotty wine buff. Keeps plenty of wine stocked outside the refrigerator. Dual controls a plus. Racks are small so oversized bottles don't make it and the racks can actually scrape the labels off if you are not careful. All in all, a bargain wine cooler for the average wine consumer.

The Wine Enthusiast 48 Bottle 2-Zone Wine Refrigerator was received as a Christmas gift and purchased through Costco by the gift giver. Lovely! It was delivered on time and carried to its appropriate spot -inside wall of finished basement. Once set up the system was allowed to run for several days at the desired temperatures before placing bottles within. Since adding the bottles we have been unable to regulate the temperature controls at all. No matter the temperature set, the inside remains at 45 to 48 degrees on both sides. A freezer thermometer has been used to check the actual temperatures ensuring it was not just a faulty read on the display -it's not. A call was placed to the Wine Enthusiast who stated that they have been seeing many complaints related to the temperature controls with the 48 bottle unit only. They attempted to help by making the following recommmendations -a) move unit to a warmer place in the house if located in a cold basement or such; b) reset the unit by unplugging and replugging; c) contact Costco for a replacement due to having been purchased through them and not directly from Wine Enthusiast.

None of their recommendations have worked to date to include receiving a replacement from Costco. Costco's initial response of replacing it immediately has since turned into "none available" after several calls regarding the lack of communication for delivery of replacement and hearing from a company wanting to pick up the malfunctioning cooler. (Note: currently you can still buy one via Costco.com-online as of this typing. Still hoping to rectify the situation due to the bottles currently in the cooler.) Situation is still on-going.

The unit itself is nice though it technically will not hold 48 bottles if storing any "odd" sized bottles -Pinot Noir as an example. Shelves must be rearranged, turned over or removed to keep bottles from scraping the shelf above. Even without holding the true 48 count, this unit would work perfectly for us if the temperature control issue could be rectified.

Summary: Based on the Wine Enthusiast's statment TO US regarding seeing temperature control problems with the 48-bottle units and our own experience with the same, we can not recommend this particular unit. Nor currently do we recommend purchasing it through Costco.

Item was delivered 15 days after it was ordered only to arrive damaged (looked like it was dropped a couple times). The doors didn't shut and the top was bent. After being on hold for 20 min, they were gracious enough to re-ship another unit but did not allow for the option to expedite shipping or change to a different carrier. The second item arrived 21 days later and was in worse condition than the first. The doors were ajar and the entire back was bent in. After another 30 minute telephone conversation, they agreed to refund the purchase price but were not going to refund the $85 shipping until I requested it. Very frustrating experience.

I got a Mr. Heater Single unit about 8 years ago as a backup source of heat after hurricane Hugo knocked out our power for three weeks. It is still working fine and has come in real handy during infrequent ice storms and winter power failures.

My dad liked my single a lot so he bought a Mr. Heater Double to heat a big 3 car garage sized shop. He liked it but now thinks that a single would have worked fine as the double gets that big area heated in no time and keeps it really toasty.

My single unit works far better than gas logs to heat up a room. It does make a hissing sound that is not too loud but barely audible. A single will knock the chill off a large room in no time. A tank of propane will last about 30 to 36 continuous hours if you keep it set on low. I think this is a great alternative to other auxilary heat sources like Kerosuns or a fireplace. With an asthmatic child in our family, a kerosene heater is out of the question for us. This burns clean, creates no odor, smoke or soot. There's no maintenance, no wicks or anything like that. You can store it indefinitely untouched and then pull it out and fire it up with no preparation. I will buy another one if mine ever wears out.

I have recommended Mr. Heater to lots of my friends and family and have no reservation about recommending one to you. If you can't decide whether you need a single, double or triple I suggest trying the single first. Then if you aren't happy step up to the double or triple. It is really amazing how much heat a Mr. Heater Single generates!

It is rare to find a really good product that is durable and an excellent value. Mr. Heater is one of those rare finds. They are the Zippo lighter of auxillary space heaters in my opinion.

I live in the South, and in November each year I like to build a temporary enclosure for my deck. Last year I tried to rely on a firepit and electric heater for warmth--big mistake. This year I have the Mr. Heater--big bonus.

I've owned and operated the Mr. Heater for a few days now, and I can tell you that it really puts out the heat. If you're used to plug-in heaters you buy at Wal-Mart, you'll be blown away by the heat this thing puts out. 8,000 BTU's is incredible (that's the lowest setting). There just isn't anything comparable in its class.

I've never used propane before, so I was hesitant (there's just something about all that compressed lethel gas that gives me pause). But, it has been easy.

1. Buy the Mr. Heater and READ the manuel.

2. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and purchase a 20lb. propane tank. At the time of this writing, it costs about $48 for a filled tank (since you're a first-time buyer).

3. There's a threaded pipe part of the Mr. Heater that you press into the companion pipe on the propane tank; twist the nut on the Mr. Heater into the propane tank. Use a wrench to tighten.

4. On the propane tank is a faucet-like handle that you turn to open the gas flow.

5. Turn the Mr. Heater nob to the Medium dot.

6. Press in the Ignition.

** I recommend checking for leaks by using some soapy water. Please do this--only takes a minute. **

7. Use a match or candle lighter placed with a flame where it says.

8. It will immediately ignite; hold in the ignition for up to 30 seconds and release.

Voila. You've got instant heat--and it's instant! To turn off, just turn the Mr. Heater nob back to Off. Also, very important, it's a good idea to "close" the gas flow from the propane tank, so just turn that faucet to the closed position.

Refills are currently about $17. Just take the tank in, and at Home Depot, the used propane tank is swapped out for one that's already filled.

It's that easy! As one reviewer noted, it's not completely silent. There is a low hiss (from the propane release), but it hasn't bothered me at all. An excellent heater.

We live right on a coastal cliff in Northern California, so cool sea breezes are a way of life. It never gets over about 72 and almost never below about 50 during the day/early evening.

We have a small deck and have looked longingly at the big overhead gas heaters, but rust is such a problem here and the space so small that it wasn't really an option.

We got this heater almost as an experiment to see if a small horizontal unit would let us sit out in the evening, where after sunset it's usually around 55, too cool to sit comfortably.

And it works! The great thing for us is it's small enough to stuff in a wardrobe until needed.

It screws onto a propane bottle quickly (in fact once I've finished barbecuing I just unhook the bottle, drag it over to where we sit and attach the heater to the top.. it all takes about 2 minutes).

The heat is good, but not what you would call particularly radiant, which is to say most of the heat goes straight up, BUT the refector does a good enough job that if we (two of us) sit reasonably close together we for sure get a nice steady warming effect with it on max.

To sum up, it does what it says and is a good option for those who want to warm an area of their porch, but keep in mind it will be a small area unless you have a fairly enclosed space which will stop the heat escaping.

I think a larger refector would do a better job for us though, and if given the chance over I would probably spend a little more to get the same make but with the double reflector.

However this is a great product and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

The heater works as advertised. I have almost finished my second 20lb propane tank using this heater with no issues. I am located at about 5400 feet above sea level for those with concerns about using it at altitude. I have noticed that on the high setting (it also has low and medium) it tends to produce a slight propane odor. This is most likely due to the lower quantity of oxygen at our altitude, and therefore does not produce a complete burn. However, the medium heat setting works great and gets my 2 car garage comfortably warm in about 30 minutes.

It has been excessively hot here in Colorado and I do not have central air. It does eventually cool off late in the evening, so I usually get by with opening up my windows in the evening and turning on fans; but; the trick is to be home at the right time and remembering to close up the house in the morning. The Eco Breeze seemed to be the answer. After placing my order, I received a phone call saying that imrovements were being made to the vents in the back and did I want to wait a week for the new and improved model. My answer was "yes" and it arrived in about a week. I immediatly installed the fan on the north side (shady) of my house only to discover that the side "wings" were slightly too short for my window. I emailed the company and asked if I could purchase an additional piece to make it a snug fit. I received an email the very next day saying that the piece would be sent to me free via priority mail. That was the response that I was hoping (but not expecting) to get.

I am very pleased with the Eco Breeze; in fact, I may be in love with it (did I mention how hot it has been?). I cannot speak to the humidity feature, as we do not have humidity in Colorado; but, I can say that it is really great to come home after work to a cool house. It is also great to be able to sleep in on my days off if I want to without having to get up and close up the house before it gets hot. The fan is very quiet, not as noisy as the little duel fan that was in the window before; and I suspect it will prove to be much more energy efficient than an air conditioner would have been. The Eco Breeze seemed to be a bit pricey for a window fan; but, the fact that it I no longer have to be home at the right time and can sleep in if I want to is worth the cost.

The issues with the louvers recirculating air was the only reason I gave the old version of this product 3 stars, as it appears that has been fixed it gets a 5 star review.

It does exactly what it says, kicks on automatically and cools off the house as soon as it is cool enough outside. It is an amazing product, my unit is on its second summer right now and works great. I highly recommend it.

Sure you could do this yourself without this fan. Just stand around measure and wait for the moment outside air be cooler and less humid than indoors and open the window, install a fan turn it on then wait just in case it warms back up so you can close it all up... The Eco Breeze does it all for you the instant it should nothing more nothing less. Besides the fancy control and louvers it is the nicest and quietest window fan I've ever owned. To sum it up it only turns on when outside air is cooler and dryer than inside air then shuts off when it gets down to your set point or outside air can no longer help.

I own the Traeger Junior, and I was unhappy with the medium setting on the three position temperature switch (it was too hot, often close to 300 degrees), so I decided to upgrade.

I recommend installing the new controller by removing the hopper:

1. Remove the two screws on the old controller.

2. Remove the pellet hopper (it's only held on by 4 screws). I also removed the 4 screws on the bottom of the hopper to make the final installation easier.

3. Feed the old controller through the front of the hopper. This will allow you to completely remove the pellet hopper and get it out of the way.

4. Install the temperature probe (RTD) per the directions; the diagram isn't great, but it's much better than the written directions.

5. Cut all the the zip ties.

6. To keep from improperly connecting the wires or having to study the wiring diagram, simply disconnect the old wires (pull apart the molex connectors with a slight rocking motion)and reconnect the new wires ONE AT A TIME.

6. At this point your done with the connections. I turned on my Traeger briefly to make sure the fans turned on and the LED illuminated. Make sure there aren't any wires interfering with either fan.

7. I used lots of zip-ties to clean up the installation.

8. Feed the new controller through the hole in the hopper.

9. Attach the hopper

10. Attach the controller

11. Look under the hopper to make sure there aren't any wires interfering with the fan(use more zip-ties if necessary), and install the bottom of the hopper.

I am a college student, so I bought the junior Traeger model, which does not come with the digital thermostat kit. After smoking my first set of ribs I went straight to my computer and bought this because controlling the temperature with the 3-speed was quite a pain. Many burger patties and racks of ribs later I am still completely satisfied with my purchase.

Note: This takes a bit of work to install, so unless you are at least somewhat comfortable working with electronics then I would find a friend who is to install it. Still, don't let this deter you from buying it. The kit does not require any soldering to install.

Installed on a Traeger Junior. Works great, with some limitations.

-Install was pretty straightforward, but you should be comfortable with hand tools, and confident in disand re-assembling things. Also, have zip ties available. I took the advice of the reviewer who pulled the whole hopper/firebox assembly out of the grill first. Great idea!!! Just make sure you empty the hopper first. You'll still have pellet spillage from the auger tube, but totally worth the effort. Keep in mind you have two fans to keep the wire bundles clear of when you're putting it all back together, and you'll do fine. The only fairly tricky part (or advanced finesse part) is re-mating the hopper/firebox assembly to the grill body after the thermometer probe is bolted inside the grill and the lead has been run into the hopper body. You'll figure it out. I am experienced and competent with this sort of task; a proper, professional conversion to this thermostat took me about 45 minutes. And two tallboys.

-Performance and fine-tuning are much improved over the 3-speed controller, and that's exactly what I wanted. This unit totally delivers. The feedback from the digital grill temp indicator is nice. I compared the digital display to a calibrated grill thermometer over a 3-hour smoke. Concurrence ranged from spot-on, to +/20 degreesF. This is likely due to the vertical orientation of the Traeger controller's probe. Overall, the onboard digital display is useful and can be considered a decent general guide to average grill temp over time. You will still need to periodically monitor your grill to ensure that you're not going over/under your desired grill or smoke temp. If you're pretty hands-on (OCD?) like me, upgrading to this unit will not give you true "set it and forget it" capability, but it is MUCH better than the stock 3-speed "dumb" control.

-Be aware that there is NO feedback from the temp sensor to the auger drive! They are separate! The temp on the grill does NOT influence the behavior of the auger timing. What you get with this unit is a much finer resolution control of the auger's dump behavior (by virtue of the increased number of set points on the dial), plus a feedback from the digital display of what's going on inside the grill temperature-wise. The dial setting and the digital readout are VERY roughly correlated, but actual working temp on the grill varies depending on ambient conditions, wind, moisture content of pellets, etc.

-Startup sequence is pretty genius. Once the new control was installed, I ran a test burn on the grill by powering on and setting to "smoke", per Traeger's startup advice. After about 3 minutes, I got really worried and thought I had a runaway controller! Set at smoke, the grill temp was 450+ degrees once it got going. I was not happy, but let it run a bit longer. The auger speed settled down (once the fire was well-established), and all was well. It appears that the controller is programmed to run a startup sequence that will ensure positive firebox lightup and grill chamber pre-heat, then settles down to whatever setting you've put it on. This behavior has been consistent over many subsequent grill/smoke sessions, and no longer freaks me out. I just expect the grill to blaze hard upon startup, then settle down and cook as I have it set.

Overall, this product gave me exactly what I wanted in terms of vastly better control of Traeger temp while cooking, plus a general indication of grill chamber temp. Install was reasonable, and I'm quite pleased. No regrets AT ALL about this purchase (except that Traeger put these on sale on their website for $20 less, the week after I installed mine. Timing is everything!).

The unit is cheaply made (drawer and trim plastic is not substantial), the surface is not as large as most griddles, the surface was scratched, and the depth of the drawer might allow for a stack of one pancake. Great idea, poor product.

Having a large family, and owning several griddles in my lifetime, I know what is a good griddle and what is not and I would not recommend this griddle.

1. The design is poor the warming draw takes up the entire front, so the grease catcher has to be in the back, making it inaccessible if you would like to use some of the grease to cook in.

2. The warming drawer is a good idea, but if you pull it out enough to put something in, it comes off the tracks and is VERY difficult to put back on. Therefore, my warming drawer ends up sitting on the counter under the unit.

3. If I were designing a griddle, I would assume people would use it with the warming draw in the front where they can access it so why did they make this griddle with the cord facing the front so it is bending back on itself to plug it in??

4. All the edges are rounded, so there is not a place to break an egg.

If, after all these bad reviews, you choose to purchase this product, please do not follow the temperature guidelines in the owners manual all your food will burn! I can't have the dial any higher than 250 degrees, and then I have to watch it closely. I have burned whole batches of bacon, pancakes, and eggs.

This foods will burn before they are even cooked through!

I was given this item as a gift, and am slowly adjusting to it, but if you're looking to purchase a griddle, don't waste your money on this one!

Get the Cuisinart, or some other better made griddle (with or without attached warmer) if you can afford and "heft" it, which I couldn't and can't.

Pros:

1) Price

2) Weight (I have autoimmune diseases, swollen hands, pain early, every day, so I can move the griddle and warmer without having to really "grasp" anything too tight or too heavy for me.)

3) Easy to wipe off if you're making pancakes (my husband is a vegetarian and I don't eat bacon, beef, sausage anytime but once a year, for my birthday, I like a prime rib, and I sure wouldn't fix it on this griddle).

I let it heat up really hot, wipe Country Crock on a paper towel, smear the griddle with it, being careful not to burn myself "too" much, and after I've got three 5-inch pancakes cooked completely and put in the warming drawer, I take the same piece of paper towel and sort of shove the little crispy pancake leftover pieces toward the back slot (my husband cleans up the griddle after it cools completely, and he says it's easy to do), make the next three 5-inch pancakes, and so on, until I've got 11-12--you can't completely control pancake batter spread, or at least I can't, so sometimes I get 11 and sometimes I get 12, but I never have more than three stacks across--the drawer won't hold any more than that.

4) This would be good for a dorm room--if the administration would let you have it in your room or for any single person just starting out. If you're eating something else, made in the microwave, on or in the stove--like the bacon or baked beans mentioned in an ad for this griddle--the warmer will hold (I counted) eleven 5-inch pancakes, stacked three to four high, and nothing else with them.

5) I'm not anxious making pancakes on this the way I was in a non-stick skillet when I had no way to stop the pancakes from getting dead cold in minutes, so I would serve my husband his first and eat after just like my mom used to do--and I felt left out, like a cook and waitress, not a wife and companion, while my husband relaxed over the newspaper and his breakfast.

OK, now for the cons:

1) The warmer, which was the second reason I bought this and not any other that I looked for--the first reason as noted above was the price--doesn't keep food "really warm" as the marketers imply, thought it does keep the pancakes from getting stone cold or even cool.

As my husband says, he can melt butter on his, so that's not "too" bad, but the warmer is made of thin plastic and set so low and loose under the griddle that when I touch it, it moved around, I can push in under further, which is a good thing, so the pancakes stay a little warmer than they would if I let the tray sit flush with the front of the griddle.

2) There is only enough "cooking area", as opposed to total area, for three 5-inch pancakes: one to the very left, one in the center, one to the very right. The manufacturers, based on engineer directions, I imagine, put an "inner frame" on top so you've got dead space, and with just the two of us, not being giant breakfast eaters, it takes me four batches--each batch kept in the iffy warmer below, to finish making our pancakes.

3) The temperature gauge is wonky. I have to put it up really high and then crack our front door (we live in Utah) to let the chemical smell dissipate. It does not wear off after the first use, and also to let the fumes from the non-stick surface mixed with very high heat, to not get trapped in our very small kitchen. Well, I do set it higher than indicated, pour the pancake batter carefully (left, right, center), and watch for the tops to bubble and the outside to dry "just enough" before flipping the pancakes over. (It shouldn't take so long to cook just 11-12 pancakes, and it didn't take me that long when I did them in a non-stick skillet, but as I said, I couldn't join my husband at the table to eat with him, so I prefer this griddle and it's luke-warmer to the alternative.

RECOMMENDATION:

If you can afford a Cuisinart or any other griddle that is made better, buy it. Then put one of those bread stones in a basket, stack your pancakes in the basket and cover them up with a heavy cloth. But if you're single, on a tight budget, have to handle the griddle yourself and can't lift heavy things as I cannot, and you're planning to make just pancakes, maybe some bacon, buy this until you can get the better, or best, on the market. This is definitely a make-do, stop-gap item; I wouldn't buy it for anyone else, but I'm grateful I can sit down with my husband to eat with him, and this particular griddle at this particular price allows me to do that.

I like it, and it's not blowing my circuit breaker when it's in the HIGH setting, in the room I need it in, so I'm not going to return it.

Others may not be so lucky due to an inexplicable design decision:

I really HATE that when you turn it to LOW setting, you CANNOT USE THE THERMOSTAT!!!

As soon as you select a thermostat "temperature", it automatically switches from LOW to HIGH power, and could then trip a typically overloaded circuit breaker.

If you MUST use the low setting because of your homes wiring, your only choice to keep it from running continuously, is to use the TIMER feature.(minimum 1 hour)

I've had many heaters, and NONE with a thermostat behaves this way in low setting!!

(Including the same brand cheaper LASKO 754200 ceramic heater that I also bought.) Inexplicable.

I've got some areas of the house that I'll blow the circuit breaker if I use the HIGH setting.

(14AWG wiring, with 15A breakers, and some are pretty heavily loaded already. The kind of "cheap" barely acceptable wiring many new houses have in them.)

I won't buy an electic heater unless it has both a high(1500 watts) and low(usually ~750W, but this one says 900W) setting, plus a thermostat to keep it from running constantly.

If you are buying this heater and MUST use it in the LOW setting in some areas, then you'll want to buy something else.

On the PLUS side, the designers got a lot right:

1. (my Wife likes it) looks good in a living room (smaller than I had pictured, that's a good thing).

2. AIRFLOW: Very quiet. It has a vertical "Squirrel cage" type blower. One fan speed.

(No "Blower only" mode.)

The description tries to make it sound like it's got a powerful blowerno, I wouldn't call it that.

but it does have better airflow than I've seen in many other ceramic style heaters with regular fan.

Note: does NOT have an air-filter to keep dust out of the blower or heat elements.

The air intake is in back, and air is then sucked into top and bottom of squirrel cage fan. The air entry is at least 6" above floor, so that somewhat reduces dust intake.

(any heater with no filter usually means taking them apart every couple years to clear out the dust buildup, or see reduced airflow/performance, and earlier failure. It's rare to find a heater with filter.)

3. HEAT: Standard maximum 1500 Watts=5118 BTU/hr.. Plenty to warm us up 5 feet away, and to warm a small room, especially as a supplemental heater.

I'm using it in large open room with very high ceiling, but I can certainly tell it's warmer when I walk back there from colder adjacent front entry area. We're using it more for area heating within the room, while sitting watching TV.

4. Looks like ~40 degree arc swivel, which is enough to get both sides of a person, and to help circulate air in room. (first one I've had with swivel, so don't know how that compares with other brands)

5. TIMER: settable from 1 to 7 hour, in one hour increments.

We use the timer(LOW or high) along with the thermostat(HI only!!), since we'd keep forgetting to turn it off when done in the room (it's quiet, to my ears anyway).

6. Controls: The buttons on top mean I don't have to bend so low if I don't have the remote control in my hand, and the settings are easy to see.

On the other hand, that also makes it harder to tell (when sitting down) what setting is chosen when using the remote control. (The Infrared remote control has no indicators showing current setting)

The remote controls: ON/OFF; Hi/Lo temp; Swivel on/off; temp setting: one press for each temp change cycles through 60 deg to 85deg, in 5 deg increments(HIGH temp ONLY!!); TIMER: each press cycles from 1 to 7 hour, in 1 hour increment, with top display of "4,2,1", so you must add the numbers to figure the total time)

It has a ~6Ft power cord with two prong polarized plug.

I am very VERY pleased with this purchase! Big thanks to the woman who actually suggested this product in a review I was reading about another I was going to purchase. A little unit that seriously kicks out the heat. I use it for an open area den-there is a draft from main home entry on cold nights. I sit it between door and lounging area. So I live in a small (I mean small less than 400 sq ft-YIKES!) cottage. I can not swing my cat. It's ALL electric and my PG&E bill is bananas WITHOUT using the heat. So I suffered in the cold until my sister told me she had a lasko floor heater. I wasn't impressed when I saw it (not this one) but I honestly didn't care because I was tired of freezing to death with layers of clothes on. It's murder trying to get going in the morning (skipping showers cause it's too cold :(-C'mon!!). I saw this Lasko and was super excited. It LOOKED interesting, better than my sisters, well on the internet picture anyway. If you have ever lived in a small place you have to know ANYTHING you add to the decor, grows 5 times it's original size. I didn't want a contraption in the middle of my place. Well I'm here to tell you I in fact received it and was instantly satisfied with it's appearance. It's rather elegant as elegant as you can get being a heater and made of plastic. The base is metal and the tower is "i wanna look like stone" and does a fairly good job of it...unless your sitting on top of it and analyzing it. So for appearance for what it is made of and the look it is trying to pull off: 5 stars. Good job Lasko. Now, as far as heating, it's freaking NOT freezing in here anymore I am happy to say. This thing is really great. I love to be warm so I put it on 75 degrees and I am cozy as a bug in about 5 minutes(room ~ 200 sqft) You have many choices. For temp: 60,65.70,75,80,85 then max. There's a timer for it to go off after 1-7 hours. It can oscillate though I don't use this. One persons review stated it made his e-bill go up I don't know but I don't need to find out. My latest PG&E bill is unremarkable (super excited!!) but I've only had it a month so I'm a bit nervous about a surprise huge PG&E bill next month. So this thing looks great and works great for what you pay. It's light weight so I bring it to which ever room I'm inmy whopping choice of basically two. I'm giving 5 stars because it's all I expectednice looking to blend in a small cottage without sticking out like a sore thumb and also does what it sets out to doheats so well it makes me fall asleep :) Oh, it also comes with a remote control which I find wicked funny. This review can also apply to the 6410 model which, according to Lasko Products, only differs in color.

Who would have thought you could have made a functional, inexpensive, thermostatically-controlled, heater, attractive? Well Lasko must have, because they've done it. I purchased this heater for my mother who lives in our finished basement (I don't want anyone thinking I have my mom living in an "unfinished" basement, under the stairs, or anything like that). The oscillating feature is nicely integrated in the design as it pivots along the top band of the metal support structure. It has a bright, red, LED that shines through the bottom of the heating grill so you can easily see that the unit is on. It puts out a good amount of heat and is every bit as effective as the DeLonghi units I own in other parts of my house. So, overall, I'm happy with it. Let me lay out the Pros and Cons for you.

Pros:

Attractive crackle surface along the skin of the unit.

Heavy base provides sturdy support to keep the unit from tipping.

Nice size makes it easily unobtrusive.

Very quiet.

Ready to use right out of the box.

Cons:

Remote is a bit difficult use. It has icons only which are rubber-lifted and all black. They are a bit difficult to see unless you tilt the remote in the light to get contrast from the raised surface.

Thermostat is restricted to five-degree increments. My other DeLonghi units allow full-degree adjustment.

No tip-turn-off feature if you tend to get a bit rowdy in your heated room.

We have only had the unit for about a week. As time goes by, I will provide any additional information that I feel is relevant to this review. I certainly recommend this product. If this review was helpful to you, please say so. Thanks!

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with LaskoProducts who told me that this particular heater does not have a tip shut-off feature. They told me that if the unit were to tip, it would most likely overheat and then the thermal protection would kick in. I don't think I would want to count on the thermal overload protection to protect from a tip-over. If I just HAD to have this heater, I would probably just strap one of the bracket legs to a stationary object or clamp it to the floor. It's pretty stable but it's certainly not "untippable."

I wanted to see how the heater would respond if it tipped over so I tipped it, last night. It did not turn off. It just laid there like a tipped-over R2-D2, rotating back and forth. I didn't wait around to see if it would overheat and shut off. I have two other oscillating heaters in my home in my kid's bedrooms that are made by DeLonghi and they have the tip-over shut-off feature. As a matter of fact, you can't even pick them up without them shutting off. I bought them a few years ago at Costco but couldn't find an identical product when I bought the decorative heater from Amazon.com. If tipping is not your concern, this is still a great heater.

In my seller review, I mentioned that the black part around the screen had very small scratches (not visible without very close inspection) and I got an email from the company expressing their concern and wanting to make things better. The product comes in a small box with plenty of protection inside. A minor point, however, is that there is no removable plastic film on the front of the unit so it arrives very lightly scratched. Not a big deal but its something.

You will need 4 AAA batteries in total. two for the inside part and two for the outside part. Longer batteries can be a tight fit. The amazon basics rechargeables just manage to squeeze in.

I have tested the Amazon Basics AAA rechargeable batteries with both parts (they are good for cold weather as well & slow discharge). They have performed as well as I expect any battery to. They were thus only charged once in over a year (and that was for testing a small problem). The outdoor sensor and batteries also continued to work through the coldest of nights here with the lowest in the teens.

The problem stems from moister. I do not have it in the best location (a location that isn't recommended by the manufacture) and every so often when it rains the outdoor sensor disconnects. Not every rain. Anyway, no problem. Bring it in, take the batteries out, let it sit for an hour, and put it all back as it was. Keeps on going.

So all you have to do to get everything working is to:

Take both units out of the packaging.

Open the battery compartments with your finger.

Install the batteries.

Seperate them about 5 feet or a bit more for testing (indoor).

After testing, place them where you want and that's it.

So the idea is to test that the outdoor sensor is four degrees or less different than the indoor sensor. This makes sure they are working correctly. The sensors are correct within 2 degrees each, so max of four, of actual temperature...

Tested the indoor sensor next to one of those wall gps weather stations and after about 1/2 hour they both read the exact same indoor temperature. It takes up to 1/2 hour for the temperature to settle.

The outside part isn't water proof and I personally don't think anyone should be expecting it to resist mother nature like its some kind of miracle sensor especially at its price. However, I can't see why a weather proof sensor can't be constructed. There are weather proof sensors on my a/c condensors and they work great.

The indoor sensor is sensitive. You'll want to place it where there's the least fluctuation of temperature or perhaps more importantly where you are the most interested in knowing what the temperature will be.

I haven't tested it much, except for 1/2 hour, but it appears the outdoor sensor works fine at 25' from indoor sensor with no line of sight.

Other infomation:

Indoor part measurements 3.5" x 2.5" x 0.75"

Outdoor part measurements 2.5" x 2" x 1"

There's a hole for screw mounting to a wall (both indoor and outdoor).

The indoor sensor has a pull out stand.

The outdoor sensor is able to stand on its own (for temperary use).

Battery life 24+ months

1 year warranty.

So the end result is that the temperature is accurate enough for satisfaction. I do recommend if your searching for a cheap indoor and outdoor digital temperature gauge. If in time that changes, I will update this review. As of right now, with 14 months of use, I would buy another if a second were needed.

So the indoor unit wasn't keeping the outdoor temperature lost it after a few hours. Tested recharge of amazon basics batteries in outdoor unit and no effect. Tested recharge of amazon basics batteries in indoor unit and success.

The batteries lasted about one year and a couple months before having not enough charge for normal use.

Had also swapped the batteries in both parts and that had failed as well, so batteries in both needed recharging. A test of non-recharged batteries in indoor unit and charged batteries in outdoor unit left a test of recharging indoor unit batteries which was successful. Also ruled out interference by moving them close together which was unsuccessful. Outdoor unit is working properly.

I bought this as a replacement for the disappointing Acu-Rite 00782A2 Wireless Thermometer I had, and to be honest the inexpensive price was my key reason. I like having the ability to see the temperature outside in my bedroom before I head out to walk the dog or at other points during the day. The sending unit is fairly small and unobtrusive, although the occasional LED flash startled me one night. The receiver is attractive and relatively small with a pop out stand that allows it to sit on a desk, table, or nightstand. One major drawback however is that the receive has only a two digit readout. If it's over 99 degrees all you get are two dashes, which initially made me think the sending unit was again malfunctioning. It wasn't...it was 106 outside. And in all honesty this points out the silliness of giving me temperatures to a tenth of a degree...I don't really care about the tenths...I'm not checking my own body temperature and I doubt there's people who need THAT much precision in temperature...I'd rather it read out to three digits. There also is no reset function on either the sending or receiving unit; one of the few things I liked on the Acu-Rite 00782A2 Wireless Thermometer. You get what you pay for, and for what I need this is OK, not the greatest, but at least not the battery eater the Acu-Rite 00782A2 Wireless Thermometer was. It has its flaws, but I'm not about to spend a huge amount of money for something that by and large is a convenience item.

First Ambient weather instrument ordered ever, but exceeded expectations for the specs. I have a $600 Davis Vantage Pro 2 professional weather station and needed a simple wireless thermometer as a backup if ever needed. The specs for this items shows +2 degrees, but this thing is within .5 degrees of my professional weather station! Wow.

Need to give it 24 hours for thermometer to orientate itself to the outside for best readings, but after that it is .5 of true temps.

Wish it had Max/Min recording, but other than that, I would highly recommend this item for anybody that likes accurate weather temps.

Just remember that where you put your thermometer will dictate how accurate it is. Best in shaded areas on a north side of a building or home, away from any direct sunlight or artificial heat or cold sources, or where excess heat or cold could accumulate.

Now, let me tell you what this unit REALLY offers!

PROS:

First, it has a remote control. This is a big thing for us... we don't like to have to keep getting up and down whenever we want to change a setting... and settings it has! With the remote, you can not only change the temperature, but also set the timer, fan speed, sleep mode, and operating mode (cooling, fan, "drying" which I'll get into in a moment..., or AUTO)

It has a timer! You can set your air conditioner to shut off after a certain amount of time up to 24 hours in half-hour increments (one-hour increments after 10 hours). This is great for those of us who "accidentally" fall asleep while watching a movie or something with the air conditioner on... it saves a ton on electricity!

The vent is adjustable so you can direct the air. Pretty standard, but Amazon doesn't mention it.

Digital temperature display again, probably seems obvious, but again, Amazon doesn't mention it.

About that 3-speed fan they mention... that would be Low, Medium, or High... but you can also choose "AUTO", which will alter the fan's intensity for you depending on demand.

The filter is not only washable, the unit actually tells you when it needs cleaned, so you don't forget to check it.

It has this thing called "SLEEP" mode... where it apparently slowly rises the designated temperature by 4 degrees over a 1 hour period, then runs at that temperature for six hours before returing to the original temp. I suppose this would make it quieter when you're sleeping, but we don't intentionally sleep in the room we have this in, so it's not such a big deal to us.

Lots of other modes! Here's a description:

FAN mode works like a fan by bringing air in from the outside.

AUTO mode a "smart" air conditioner! Instead of just flooding your room with constant cold air until icicles form, this allows you to set a temperature and stick to it. This may be a standard function in newer air conditioners, but the one we've been using in our bedroom for years didn't have this, so you'd wake up freezing in the middle of the night. In AUTO mode, the AC starts cooling whenever the temperature in your room hits 4 degrees above your desired temperature, and it switches to FAN mode when the temp drops 2 degrees below that. This seven-degree range may seem broad, but it keeps your air conditioner from constantly turning on-and-off-and-on-and-off, like my grandma's nursing home AC used to do.

COOL mode standard air conditioner mode. This is similar to AUTO, except that you only have a two-degree range. The booklet offered this example:

Assume you set your temperature to 70 degrees.

in AUTO mode, it will COOL to 68 degrees, then FAN to 74 degrees, then COOL again...

in COOL mode, it will COOL to 70 degrees, then FAN to 72 degrees, then COOL again...

Basically COOL is the same as AUTO except it'll switch more often.

Then there's DRY mode now this is neat... your air conditioner acts as a dehumidifier, removing moisture from your home, which can make it seem drier without having to spend as much on electricity.

Finally, there's an ENERGY SAVER mode, which can be selected from COOL mode. When your desired temperature is reached, it stops cooling, the fan runs for another couple of minutes, then it "cycles" for two minutes every 10 minutes until the room temperature gets above the set temperature, at which point it COOLs again.

Oh, and it plugs into a regular outlet. This is great, because at the time we needed an AC, all the stores in our city were sold out of everything but 220s, which (I recently learned) do not fit normal outlets.

CONS:

It's heavy. The UPS guy dropped it off and I couldn't get it inside until my husband got home. Also, the instructions tell you to screw it into your windows. My windows aren't made of wood, and I don't really want to drill into them anyway, so we chose not to do that. I'll let you know if it slides out or anything, but I think it'll be fine. We might prop it up outside with a 4x4, we'll have to see.

Installing it was really pretty easy, given that we didn't really follow the instructions. If you follow the instructions, best of luck to you.

UPDATE: ONE YEAR LATER.

A couple of comments have suggested this review sounded a lot like a manual. It probably does. We wrote this the day after we got the air conditioner, and wanted to help out anyone else considering buying the unit with as much information as possible. When you get the manual, you probably will not have to read it if you've read this review!

That said, we used this air conditioner for the lower story of our 1940s-era brick home, which does not have working central air. It was used for an area of probably around 650-ish square feet. Our home is not insulated, and any argon gas that may once have been in our windows is no longer there, so this is definitely not the "optimal home", but this unit worked for us. It is sort of noisy, but no more so than the 5000 BTU air conditioner we had from the 1990s. I love the different cooling modes that help us save money on electricity. We usually turn it off at night unless it's an especially hot Ohio night.

One more note it came with foam padding to put around the window opening to more fully insulate from the outside air. This then stuck when we tried to remove it in the fall. We won't be using that this year.

We've all been through the AC Jig ... you buy a fancy name brand, you install it, and the problems begin. Given that this was the year to replace the two window ACs in the house, I decided to "go rogue" and order the SPT instead of a Fedders or Frigidaire or the like.

I'm glad that I did.

This is an amazing AC ... it's actually relatively quiet both on the compressor side and on the build side. Note that I did not say silent, but compared to other 10k-12k BTU units, it's like listening to ambient trance instead of techno. Nice. No longer do I have to walk over to the AC and slap it on the side to get it to quiet down the poorly engineered housings of the other, name-brand units rattle and squeak and complain too much and since I am no longer hitting inanimate objects, we're going to save a lot of money on therapy for me.

I like the remote (which you can use from 90 degrees to the side (apparently a miracle of modern technology that has escaped other makers)), the timer functions, and the dehumidifier mode ... very nice for cool yet humid days here in the backcountry. But what I really like is the QUIET.

PSif you do the install yourself, it's not a bad idea to caulk all around the unit to really seal it up. This may not be important to urban folks, but living here in the woods, any little beam of light that illuminates a path into the house will attract gnats, skeeters, and those ever-inquisitive sabre-toothed tigers and mastodons. So caulk around it so that you can enjoy refreshingly cool and quiet summer evenings without being disturbed by Mother Nature's little friends.

Best Deals on SPT 12000 BTU Window Air Conditioner Energy Star WA-1211S

I purchased this AC last May and it worked all summer, which was great.

So today, when it turned 85 degrees in NYC, we powered it up and it does not turn on.

I can hear the compressor turn on but none of the fans turn on.

I get on the call with customer service at Sunpentown, which is based in CA.

Got through, they had to verify with their Amazon rep. My purchase checked out but the warranty requires me to ship the unit all the way to CA. Pay about $100 out of pocket to ship it there.

I'm told turnaround for repair is 2 1/2 weeks. So add that to shipping time and other overhead, I'm waiting nearly a month to get a warranty repair? I wrote back to the rep, who will hopefully get back to me tomorrow, to see what alternatives I have. If this is the only option what would you do?

Lesson learned so far, don't buy large and heavy items online if you need the warranty.

Should have bought local. Will Amazon do anything to help ? Will try once I hear back.

The one star is mostly for having a product that works for one season. Will update once I hear back from their customer support.

*UPDATE* 5/23/13 I heard back from Sunpentown and they will not make any other accomodations. We called a local repair guy and got it fixed. $60 out of pocket, still cheaper and much much faster than sending it for warranty. After this experience, I doubt I will buy anything from Sunpentown in the future. This experience has left a sour taste. Hope you all found this review helpful. I actually bought this unit because of all the good reviews never thought I'd be one to write the bad review.

My 2nd floor apartment is in a 100 year old brick building and in the summertime it is like living in an oven . . . VERY HOT!!! Ten years ago I bought two 5000BTU ACs and because of the very high electric bills I used fans to save money. I saw this AC on Amazon (with great feedback) during the beginning of the 2012 summer and kept putting off placing the order. I have small windows (22" wide) and feared it would be too big to fit, also I am just a 5'5" -57 year old female and I wasn't sure I could lift it to install. Anyway, the ones Amazon had (with Prime)sold out and I figured I'd just suffer through another very hot summer but Amazon got them back (a little higher price but still on Prime) and they only had 13 left so I ordered it. It was delivered today and the package weight was 75# and it was a physical ordeal to get it in my apartment, and with the sweat dripping off my body I said, "OMG, how am I going to get this in the window???" I got it out of the shipping box and moved it into the livingroom and opened the AC box. It was only 19" wide and could fit into my window but it was still heavy (about 68#.) It took every ounce of strength I had but I put it in the window, put the sliding screens on, got it completely installed and turned it on. Today this AC has made me one very happy person. I feel like I am in heaven, a cool heaven. I didn't really read the manual so I turned it on and set the temp. and the cooling began. I set it on auto and it runs for a while, stops, a few seconds later it turns on again, runs, turns off, runs, and so on. People say it is loud but when you are used to screaming fans I'd say it is not loud at all. It took about 30 minutes to cool my very hot apartment into a comfortable place to live. I greatly recommend buying this AC because it works like a dream.

Well, the summer seems to be over here (haven't had a need for the AC for a week and a half or so), and we're still happy with this AC.

As I mentioned, we bought this 12,000 BTU SPT to replace a 7,800 BTU Panasonic (Panasonic CW806TU), and, surprisingly, it seems it may have actually saved money on our AC bill. Our AC bill, which typically cost, at minimum, $100/month in electricity during the summer months, averaged about $80/month with the SPT.

Now, there are many factors which determine how much it costs to run an AC (the most obvious of which is how many hot days you get, how hot it gets on those days, your price per KWH, etc.), but my thinking is that the SPT, having a greater cooling power, did not need to be on as frequently as did the Panasonic. When the outside temperature hit, say, 90° or higher, the Panasonic would basically never turn off, even with the thermostat set relatively high. With the SPT, we'd frequently set the thermostat to 76°, and if the apt. was hot, would stay on a good while until it stabilized the temperature, but would then cycle on/off periodically. Also, the Panasonic, when the outside temperature exceeded about 95°, would struggle to keep the room temperature at even 80°, while the SPT had cooling power to spare.

So, while it was using about 1060 watts while on, as opposed to the Panasonic which used about 680 watts, the SPT wasn't on nearly so often.

At this point, if this AC lasts at least six years, I'll be happy with the price paid for the performance we're getting.

We bought this to replace a 14 year old Panasonic 7,800 BTU AC which was underpowered for the space for which it was used, so I'm comparing this SPT WA-1211S to the Panasonic. We've had this SPT for two weeks now.

As you'd expect, with an increase of over 50% BTUs, the SPT cools the room significantly faster. The air certainly feels a lot colder. How much of this lower temperature is due to the increased BTUs, and how much is due to (perhaps) the Panasonic getting weaker over time, I can't say. If the Panasonic did get weaker (needing a recharge of the coolant, as I've read), it happened so gradually as to be unnoticeable.

Also, the fan, on high, moves more air, faster, than did the Panasonic (which also contributes to the faster cooling). The downside though, is that it's also significantly louder; more, it seems to me, than can be explained by the higher CFM (cubic feet per minute). I attribute this to a lower construction quality (more on this below).

The Panasonic had an EER of 10.0, while the SPT is 10.8, not really that much more efficient than a 14 year old AC!

One problem we occasionally had with the Panasonic was that if it was used when the outside temperature was about 70° or below, the unit would ice up. Later, when the ice started to melt, it would fall off in chunks, hit the fan, and make a pretty loud thunk, unexpectedly! The SPT claims to operate in a 64-109° outdoor temperature range, which I presume means it won't ice up like the Panasonic did.

It has a "dry" feature, during which the unit is supposed to act as a dehumidifier. I was puzzled by this feature when I read of it. Did the AC use less electricity when in dry mode? Did the AC sacrifice some cooling in order to dehumidify faster?

Well, now that we own it, I can say that dry mode is a gimmick; all it does is enforce a low fan speed. I'm not sure how it behaves so far as maintaining a set temperature and the thermostat is concerned. The unit draws the same electricity (as measured by the P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor) in dry mode as in cool mode, approximately 1060 watts. But, no matter to me, since I was skeptical of this "feature" from the start.

More useful, once the situation arises for it, is the timer feature which allows you to program the unit to turn on/off up to 24 hours in advance (for the first 10 hours in ½ hour increments, then in one hour increments).

My impression is that the SPT is built more cheaply than our old Panasonic. One example of this is the styrofoam which separates the exterior components from the interior components: this styrofoam is very thin. When you look at it during a sunny day, it's pretty translucent.

The SPT is better than most ACs I've used in regards to the ability to change the direction of air flow, both horizontally (very good) and vertically (excellent).

A bit of an annoyance is the beep the AC makes when you change the thermostat setting with the remote control: it's very loud! Perhaps, though, the loudness is meant to compensate for the loudness of the AC when set to high.

Overall, though, assuming the SPT continues to perform as it has thus far (we're less than a week into summer, and we've had to use it a number of times already; even a few times before summer started), and considering its cost ($316), I consider this a very good (4 star) purchase.

An AC is a longer term purchase than most things we buy via Amazon. I intend to update this review should any problems arise.

Works great with my Redlink gateway and thermostat head. Setup takes less than an hour to get everything together, and I have yet to have an issue with connectivity in the 14 months I've had it.

I have it set up with a simple Carrier single-stage gas furnace and conventional A/C, so I don't use any of the advanced features for multi-speed or -stage units, but that just meant there are less wires to hook up, so I'm okay with that!
