As others have experienced, the probe for my thermometer failed to work out of the package. The temperature rose very quickly and then froze at a "HI" reading, despite powering on and off, changing batteries, etc. I contacted the company, and they were kind enough to ship me a new probe and they determined the original one was likely faulty. The new probe worked terrific and I was happy with my digital oven thermometer and its performance. For 6 months. Then the probe froze in the "HI" reading again. I once again contacted Maverick regarding the failure of the new probe and was told that: "Getting 6 months of use out of it before it fails doesn't seem like a defective probe to me." (actual quote from email), and that I was welcome to purchase a replacement probe for $12 each or 2/$20. So it seems to me that the probe portion of the unit is basically a "disposable" that needs to be periodically replace in order for the unit to function. This is not stated anywhere in the product literature, and frankly, is very disappointing and misleading. I expected that I was purchasing a product that would last at least twice as long as it did. Needless to say, I will not be purchasing a replacement probe or this product again. Now, it's simply relegated to being yet another kitchen timer. Very disappointing.

Just remove the battery cover, remove the isolating plastic from the battery and the unit is ready. Push the sensor into the clip, attach the clip to the oven shelf and plug the sensor in to the unit. Now find somewhere to mount the head unit and that's it.

The only criticism right now would be that the clip that is supposed to attach the sensor to the oven shelf doesn't locate well. It works, but it really needs reshaping slightly so that the clip won't slip up out of the grid.

Item worked for one year, three weeks. Then had widely varing temperature readings, or indications that the oven had reached over maximum temperature (500+ degrees) when oven was set for 325 degrees.

I knew my oven was inconsistent. I'm pretty sure it was original equipment for my 25 year old house. And like everything else about this house, I can find equivalent replacements for doors, light fixtures and faucets in the bargain bin at Home Depot. I shouldn't be surprised that the appliances are of similar quality.

I wish I could say that this little item solved all my problems. But all this digital thermometer told me was that my oven was emotionally incapable of maintaining anything resembling a consistent temperature. The temperature on the knob bore absolutely no relation to the temperature in the oven. Turning the temperature knob up or down produced completely random results. So with tax refund check in hand, I purchased a new oven. I would like to drag the old oven out into the street and shoot it like a mad dog, but discharging firearms within city limits is apparently illegal, even in Texas. But I digress.

This thing saved me months/years of frustration trying to work with an unworkable appliance by showing me how truly awful my oven is in a very consistent, verifiable manner. The thermometer simple to use, and the 20 hour timer is a nice feature. I use it to remind me that my 12 hour dough rise has, in fact, been rising 12 hours.

My only quibble is that the cable for the probe is pretty short. I'd planned on sticking it to the control panel on the back of the stove, but the wire length is entirely inadequate. I'd happily pay an extra 5 bucks to get another 2 feet (0.00303030303 furlongs) for a little extra flexibility in placement.

Other than that minor aside, it works great. The price can't be beat. I'll still use to with my new oven as a double-check on the oven's own thermometer. To quote Ronald Reagan: "Trust, but verify. Especially when baking bread."

Even though I got pretty good at determining when my oven reached 450 degrees by touch alone, this thermometer is almost completely pain-free. And doesn't raise near as many blisters.

For the price of this thing, it should be as standard in the kitchen as a spatula or wooden spoon. 20 bucks is cheap insurance in case your oven decides it wants to report its temperature in Celsius or Kelvins for the day without notifying you.

If you use your oven, buy this thermometer.

It might be okay if this thing were flimsy, or had hard to press buttons, or just about any of a thousand issues aside from the one it presents. I read this issue on another review (I think it was listed under a different item heading, but definitely the same product) but assumed the user was doing something oddperhaps turning on the device well into the heating process?

I can safely say he or she likely was not. The first one or two times I used this, it seemed to work okay giving temps in the same range as an old analog thermometer I had borrowed. After that though, I began turning it on (with a cold oven) only to get the word "HI" looking back at me. It never changes, and power cycling the thermometer does not help either. Changing the batteries? Nope. It just continues to read "HI". "HI" doesn't help when I'm looking for temperatures.
