So when I heard that this summer was supposed to be BRUTALLY hot, I decided that it was time to invest in an AC unit for my room. My dad has one in the living room and his room but never got one for me, and since I'm on a super tight budget since the place I work now is going under I was looking for the best deal I could get in the $50 $150 range. And this is the product that I found.
First off, you won't find a better deal, you just wont. I paid under $200 (which is UNREAL for an AC unit, most go for $300+) Not to mention this product is sold by Amazon, meaning you can take advantage of the super saver shipping which is great because anybody who knows anything about shipping will tell you it'll cost a pretty penny to ship a 40 pound AC unit. (roughly 25-30$) So right off the bat I thought I might be getting ripped off, but since I got the free shipping I said whatever I'll just return it if it's a junker. but BOY was I wrong!
The thing came in it's original box like how you'd buy it in a retail store, not in an amazon box. (I mention this in case you live in a bad area, you may want to call UPS and set something up because people will immediately know what it is thats being delivered). Anyway I carried it upstairs and let me tell you, this thing is very manageable even for someone of a small stature, very easy to carry.
So I open up the box and look in. Everything was organized and ready with everything right there, no digging around or tedious unpacking necessary. Opened up the manual and got started. The installation was a breeze, The manual was easy to read and I gotta say they could have done a little better job with the illustrations but whatever. Got it all set up in the window and sealed it off. Unfortunately the cord is only about 4 or 5 feet long so if you dont have a plug right next to the window you're gunna need an extension cord like I did (even though the manual says not to use one. I bought a nice heavy duty one that can take up to 13 amps, which is nowhere near what this unit uses so I recommend something similar). After going and buying a cord I plugged her in and held my breath.
Turned the temp up to max and switched it on. The unit immediately responded and the compressor kicked on in under a second which was a huge relief to me. It took about 4 minutes for the unit to compose itself and actually start kicking out cold air (which is expected for any new compressor-based AC). Now this unit is supposed to cool a room with a max size of 150 sq-ft and my room is WAY bigger. None the less this little monster had my room freezing within 15 minutes on the LOW COOL setting!
So in conclusion I highly recommend this product to anyone looking to stay cool this summer on a tight budget

This is a great airconditioner for my daughters small apartment. It cools well. About 40 pounds so very managable. Good name brand also.Best Deals on Arctic King MWK-05CMN1-BI7 5,000 BTU Window Mounted Air Condit
My mom sold this A/C when we got central air and I definitely miss it now that I've moved into my dads home that has 3 windows in our (me and my infant daughter) slightly small bedroom. Needless to say it gets hot in here and I know that A/C will do the trick. It cools very fast and although it's slightly loud you can adjust to it quickly. I had it right next to my bed at my old home and slept all night long with it. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!Honest reviews on Arctic King MWK-05CMN1-BI7 5,000 BTU Window Mounted Air Condit
UPDATE 9 21 13 This unit DID NOT handle the humid summer well. While it did manage to cool the room by 3-5 degrees, depending on the heat index and dew point, it did not make the room feel cool. The window it is in is completely shaded at all times by a very large, old tree. Still, it cooled the room only enough to change it being from intolerably hot to uncomfortably warm. My recommendation is to use this for an extremely small room, even smaller than the manufacturer suggests. In 85 or less degree weather with a low dew point, the unit works well enough to actually cool the room. It won't be cold, but refreshingly cooler than the outdoors. So much so that you'd miss it if the power went out and you couldn't run the unit at all; and much better than a window fan. In summation, great for late spring/early summer, when the air is only mildly humid and less than 86 degrees fahrenheit. This unit will struggle on humid days and in temperatures forward of 85 degrees fahrenheit.ORIGINAL POST I have a small, one bedroom apartment that is shaped funny (a house made into apartments). The building itself doesn't have the best electrical circuitry, so in order to cool the apartment, it is necessary to have 2 units running in separate rooms on separate circuits, with the air blowing in a different direction in each room. I must admit, I was angry at first because the unit didn't seem to work properly but I have since figured out the secret to its optimal performance.
If you want cool air, cold enough to cool a room, YOU MUST SET THE THERMOSTAT TO A SIX OR SEVEN. Anything lower, and it will only blow room temperature air. That said, it works well on both LO COOL or HI COOL, AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE THERMOSTAT SET TO A SIX OR SEVEN. The unit only goes up to a seven, so the manufacturer could have done a lot better with this. It is only upper 70's where I am. What happens when it's a sweltering 80+ degrees in a few months? I don't know that this unit will be able to handle extremely humid, 90-100 degree weather, which is commonplace during the summer in my town. The heat index always reaches into the 100's for weeks at a time. I will have to update this post once that kind of weather hits.
My other recommendation, is that you adhere to the manufacturer's room size suggestion of 150 square feet or less. I have tall ceilings (I'm tall but still need a ladder to be able to change a light bulb) but wall to wall, it's a very small space. I use a 6k btu air conditioner in the bedroom and a 5k btu air conditioner in the living room (which is where this unit currently is). When I open the bedroom and bathroom doors, the entire apartment is able to cool running both units together. I do have confidence, that if I have the doors closed and am only running this unit, that it would sufficiently cool the room by itself in 85 degree fahrenheit or less weather. I'll have to wait and see how well it performs in hotter weather.
This unit is not noisy in my opinion. I can't hear it in the next room with the tv on and if I'm in the same room, it sounds like low, white noise, so you can definitely hear that it's on, but I am not annoyed or irritated by the 'noise'. I can watch tv in that room without having to turn the volume up loud.
Hope this helps.
