I have been in the HVACR business for over 30 years. Started out with an old Simson meter. Then I was a Fluke man. But in the early 90's I reluctantly gave Fieldpiece a try. I have never regretted that and have never looked back.

I have throughout the years purchased many of the SC meters. I have only had to throw away one of the meters. I got caught in a Florida heavy downpour. The LCD screen became unreadable due to the water that found it's way into the LCD screen. A few I gave away to good friends.

This particular model "SC-77" does it all. You get auto ranging in AC volts and DC Volts. You get auto ranging in both AC and DC amps. There is continuity testing (diode testing) that will give you a beep if you have continuity. You have a built in start or run cap tester. You of course have an resistance (ohms) tester. There is a built in K-type plug so you can use any manufactures thermal clamps to get your superheat or subcool. There is a backlit display so you can handle the late night service call. The meter comes with some simple accessories. Alligator clips, a cheap K-Type thermal couple. The test leads come apart, which allows you to use practically any head that Fieldpiece makes with this meter.

I really like the lead storage built into the back of most of the SC series meters. This allows the storage of the meter into the case with leads still attached to the meter. And stops the leads from jabbing into the case when removing or inserting the meter into and out of the case. The one additional feature I would like to see added to the larger SC meters is the swivel display. (Clamp the meter, and swivel the display where you can see it.) That would make this the perfect meter.

I had purchased the SC-55 that incorporates the swivel head. However it does not have the snaps in the back to put your leads into when finished. (They also got rid of the snaps on the jaw that allowed one handed operation.) Putting it into and pulling the meter out of the case became a nightmare. Had it for a few weeks, then some lucky Ebayer got it for a steal from me. And I was glad to be rid of the frustration.

I contacted Fieldpiece to inquire about this issue. They contacted me back saying that many of their tech's prefer it this way, so they can stick the meter in their back pocket and go. Also with all the technology in the SC-55 there was not enough room on the back of the case to put test lead clamps. Now that is a bunch of "poppy cock!" The reason the SC-55 was giving me a bunch of trouble getting it in and out of the case was the very sharp test leads keep sticking into the case. "Nothing like sticking a meter with very sharp loose probes into my back pocket." I did not try it, but I bet you would only do that once!

And as far as putting claps on the back of the case, It would of added about 1/4" of depth to the meter in plastic. I would of gladly paid $5.00 more for the extra plastic.

So as stated in the title, the SC-77 is the best meter money can buy. It is not perfect,.....but close. The SC-66 and up are all very good meters. The meters below SC-66 I would not purchase until they resolve the issue with the probes and being able to protect your meter. (Hard to protect your meter when you are fighting to get it into and out of the supplied case.)

This product is good but leads are not durable. They fail to always keep a connecting. It is very frustrating when working on field. Seller is not responsible with sending new leads. Do not buy!
