The grills you see extend more than halfway around the unit. They oscillate in opposite directions, but they do not move far. The base itself does not oscillate, but it does have a step switch which turns the motion on and off.
At the strongest setting, one can barely feel the hot air blowing from the grills. Air only moves from the very center of the grills. I could not tell the difference between the 3 speeds, but when I adjusted the air speed downward, it quit blowing entirely.
Unlike other heaters I've had, the grills get hot enough to burn you if you touch them. I think they would also get hot enough to combust anything too close. I sacrificed a finger to it so that the rest of you won't have too! Interestingly, the sides of the grill where the heat doesn't blow were cool to the touch even though the center was extremely hot after running for a couple minutes.
I'm extremely disappointed in this fan. I would rather have 2 cheap fans from HD that would be safer and move more air. The oscillation is a joke since there is such a narrow range of movement.
I have pets and I don't want to take the chance one will bump into this and burn his nose. I don't see how the name "safeheat" applies when they use a metal grill.
This fan was engineered to LOOK like it works well, but it doesn't live up to it's promise. It does heat, however, so I guess it earned it's one star! Mine is going back to Amazon.

After 2 day with heater, it is way too small to heat anything too far away. I have to sit right next to it to feel any heat. Better put it on Max also. My unit for some reason the blows heat on the bottom, then cool air on top. Smart if you want a fan and heater at the same time in the winter. Oscillating doesn't do a thing but make small background noise...You think some kind of insect is in you house. Don't waste you money on this one. Return slip is filled out already.Best Deals on Delonghi DCH4120 SafeHeat Ceramic Heater with Oscillating Base
It is smaller than listed, but a great little heater for a bathroom or to knock off the chill in a smaller size room, say about a 10 X 10 ft size. I bought 3 of them and they are great for my intended purpose. With natural gas going up 48% this winter, they will pay for themselves this season alone.Honest reviews on Delonghi DCH4120 SafeHeat Ceramic Heater with Oscillating Base
The Picture of the unit does not clearly represent it. The size is way wrong. The grills in the picture make you believe that the whole area produces heat. It actually is only a small center area on each Grill. The Center gets very hot while the sides stay cool. It worked ok in a small room. I got this one to replace a tiny cheapo walmart space heater. The cheap heater produces much more heat, makes a less annoying sound, and evenly distributes the heat to the room. I paid $32 for this one which will be returned shortly, compared to the $19 I paid for the cheap one. I do not recommend this heater to anyone unless your going to use it in a small room (office). I find the noise it makes when it rotates too annoying to have it in a bedroom while your trying to sleep.I feel that the description of the Item is inaccurate for these reasons.
1. Measures 25 by 22 by 16 inches (It really is a little over half that size, the box it was shipped in was 25X22X16 almost)
2. "this quiet appliance provides bi-directional heat flow for even heat distribution" Its only quiet if you don't have it rotating to distribute the heat, other then that it makes a squeak noise.
3. "the heater's extra-large grille covers a wider range for better circulation" the grill although it appears large, only gets hot in the middle part leaving about 2/3 of it unheated.
4. "The DCH4120 features an oscillating base" The base does oscillate, although the levels do.
Well, I hope this helps someone. I don't mean to sound as if I am some grumpy customer. I wrote this for others information. I rarely return items, as a matter of fact this is my first Amazon return in 4 years. But its going back.
Have a great day!
