My wife and I have a room that faces west so we get a lot of warmth buildup in our room during the later hours of the day. This coupled with our apartment complex's failure to properly size the central air's compressor to our square-footage means our room is hot and the AC can't do anything to cool it below 80F any time of the day (Texas Summers). After a month of hot nights we decided to get a portable unit and now that we've got this we won't ever go back.
###If you own this unit and the temperatures aren't reading properly, insulate the exhaust hose with some foil from where it connects to the unit and about 2 feet after that###
Benefits:
Remote controlled
Easy to install kit into window. Easy to move as well with the built-on castor wheels
Cools great our room is maybe 15 x 15 and we can keep it at 73 degrees all night without an issue. Unit goes to 61 degrees.
Fan noise is pleasant we like white noise
Thermostat shuts compressor off once temp is reached, kicks back on when temp rises again.
Timer is easy to set and helps to save energy.
Energy usage is a lot less than running the central air all night (My KilaWatt meter gave me an average of 5.92kWh per night over 5 days or roughly $9 a month)
Doubles as a dehumidifier with 45 pint capacity. Comes with hose for draining. Don't use the hose if just using it as an AC unit.
Pulls a lot of dust out of the air. Just make sure you clean your filters about once a month.
Downfalls:
Blue led-lit display on the front is too BRIGHT. We cut a flap of thin cardboard and taped it to the unit along the top and sides using some electrical tape. Doing so prevents remote from functioning with unit though.
Hose comes out at a 90 degree angle from the unit making it difficult to place next to a wall. Clearance required is roughly 1 foot behind the unit to allow proper air flow.
Hose coming out the rear tends to get hot and gives off ambient heat. Since the units thermostat is literally right above the hose (located under the top rear filter on the upper right) the temperature readings can be off by as much as 10 degrees. At first we were having issues with the compressor running all night non stop. When I figured out what was going on I insulated the hose with some foil where the hose connects to the unit and about 2 feet more of the hose from there. Temps now read properly.
We bought our unit from Best Buy with my wife's employee discount so we paid quite a bit less than what Amazon is selling it for but I would have gladly paid the amount here for the pleasant sleep we now both enjoy.

I bought this Danby portable air conditioner for my bedroom, since in the summer, I turn my central air conditioning system upto 82 degrees at night, but keep my bedroom at 74. The room is about 175 square feet, and I must say, this air conditioner is absolutely awesome! The fan setting on the low speed is probably one of the quietest fans i've ever heard in a portable, and, as a guy who has studdied, and know quite a bit about air conditioning, let me just say, this 8000 BTU unit is well designed, and, even when the condenser fan kicks in, even that fan is not noisy at all. I've had sever different portable units over the past few years, and, if you're looking for a unit to cool either maybe your home office, maybe a den, or bedroom, trust me! with this, you can't go wrong. Danby is one of the only portable units that, besides a drain plug at the bottom, you may also hook up a standard garden hose, via the hose connector which is on the back of the machine, I do this, with the unit emptying into a 5 gallon water bottle, or you could hook the hose upto a condensate pump, and never have to worry about that rubber drain plug which like most portable air conditioners, is at the bottom of the unit, and can be a royal pain in the rear to get to, especially if the bucket fills to capacity. The remote control is quite small, but works like a champ, and has a little cut-out on the air conditioner to keep it when not in use. When you remove the remote from the storage compartment, there 4 buttons, your temp up and down, the mode button, and your fan speed button. The timer defaults at 8 ours, and must be set with the remote, but I _love this remote, both the small size in your hand, and the ease of how it interacts with the air conditioner flawlessly. With all of this said, I urge you to check this unit out, but, make sure, please! size your room first! I hear so many people come to me and say that a certain portable air conditioner doesn't work, then they tell me, well? my room is 3 or400 square feet. If you don't size properly, then my friend, you will be bitterly disappointed in the the units inadequate performance. Thanks for reading, and good luck in buying your air conditioner for the coming summer ahead.
