I wanted to dye wools in my shop rather than in my home and couldn't get an oven approved for the electric in the building so I went shopping. I read reviews and chose the Cadco, Portable Cast Iron Range, model KR-S2. When it arrived I was so excited. I brought my dyeing pots in and didn't have time to dye any wool. Instead, I made soup for a group and let it slow cook all day. There was a new start up smell but I never had any the rest of the day. It cooked consistently. I cooked soup several times before I finally could boil/dye some wools. It did marvelously. No start up smells, consistent temp's and the price was reasonable. I'll buy another one when I need it.

At first I thought it wasn't working...it takes a long time to get the canner water hot. But, I have been using it for three years now and it works great every time! Still looks like new also. Sturdy and apparently well made

I love this hot plate so much more than the old coiled plate I owned. The heat is distributed evenly so no burnt areas. Great to have if you don't want to heat up your whole kitchen on hot days. I would buy this again. 5 stars*****

Honest reviews on Cadco KR-S2 Portable Cast Iron 120-Volt Hot Plate

The first time I plugged this in, there was a huge spark and it shorted out the outlet. I moved it to another outlet, and the hot plate started to heat up. After about two minutes, there was an arc from the unit itself and it is now dead. AND the second outlet is ruined. The manufacturer's package was taped on the outside -usually an indication of a remanufactured unit. Don't waste your money on this one. Even though I got an extended warranty, I'm not too keen on getting a replacement unit.

I bought one that looks "exactly" like this one (same stainless body, feet, burner and the knob), so its probably the same physical unit..

My use is to heat water in a teapot. At first I kind of liked it, but in retrospect I would have liked "any" burner of this basic type..

After about 2 years, there is still a chemical smell from the unit (which I dislike very much because I have freed myself from as much plastic and non stick pans as I could; now I am forced to breathe in this mysterious stuff every time I use it)..

Burner rusted in a couple spots.. I thought the coating was some kind of enamel; no such luck.. Yes I put a wet water pot on the burner frequently, but the regular cheapo burners never rusted on me..

Unit is quite large for so basic a function.. And the whole top gets pretty hot; I think a poor design. After the water boils (or oddly even gets close to boiling), and I turn off the knob, it then proceeds to a rolling boil for quite a long time..

Expensive, and I hate it (at least the one that looks exactly like this one) and am shopping for another one.. I cant imagine what this burner would be good for (perhaps slow cooking, because of the heat momentum of the burner, and outdoors so you dont have to breath the unknown chemical vapors)..
