I have had my cold frame lid lifter for three seasons now and it had worked well and reliably. It was simple to install and adjust. It must be taken in over the freezing winter.

I bought this with the idea of using it on my custom wood greenhouse. I had to modify the mounting of it but in the end it has worked fine. The instructions are in german, and the pictures are not that great.

I was surprised at the amount of weight this will push; however, the drawback is that once it is attached to both sides of the cold frame, you can't open the cold frame from the top to get inside and minister to the plants. DH tried to construct something that would allow one end of the arm to detach, but without being firmly screwed together, the top would get blown open and completely flip over in the wind.

It took a while to figure out the best way to mount this because I didn't want to drill thru the plastic as shown. All I needed was a metal tee from the hardware and than used all the parts as supplied and mounted every thing on the frame. It works perfectly.

I am a somewhat haphazard gardener but with my Jewel cold frame and the automatic opener, my shortcomings do not matter. Whenever the temperature gets high enough to cook my seedlings on a bright sunny day,up pops the opener. This is the second one I have had, the other on an improvised sunboxa simple wood frame and old window, and that works perfectly too. I would not consider a cold frame without an automatic opener!
