This unit replaced the one that I had installed when I bought my home. It was a good pick and the display is much better than the old one.

Honest reviews on LuxPro PSD111 Digital Non-Programmable Thermostat

This came with our house and I hate it! I never ever had to fight with a thermostat to get it to do what I want when I want to do it. It works, as it should until you want to lower or raise the temperature. On other thermostats I've had, old, old metal dial ones and newer digital thermostats, you press the button to lower or raise the temperature. Not so with this one. With this one, you have to hold down the button until it decides to click on and respond, then the numbers move, but they move so quickly that you may not catch it in time to set it at the desired temperature. Did I say this is crap? It is. I can't believe that a hvac company installed it in the house we purchased. It certainly doesn't save energy, as it can only be set at one temperature. As I said, you have to fight with it to change the temperature. As a result, you just leave it where you set it. As another result, we are replacing this junk with a Honeywell Digital Programmable Thermostat. We had one in another house we owned and had great operational success with it. Again, I can't recommend this piece of junk because it is a pain in the neck to get it where you want it.

Of course, if your household is the kind that wants the temperature to stay at the same temp all day and night, then this will work for you. If you like to change the temperature throughout the day, say when you get up, leave the house and return, this will not work for you.

Another thing, it seems that after a few years, our house is just four (4) years old, the low battery indicator no longer works. We've changed the battery three times with fresh batteries and the indicator still says low battery. As I said, this is a piece of junk!

I had one of these and it's crap. Freezes a lot, when you turn it off, you might have a problem to get it back on to keep the right temperature. It takes forever to "calibrate" itself. Poor technology.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Granted it's not winter and I've not put this through a whole heating process of using it multiple nights. But I was able to use it a few times when it got cool here and I can say it heats up nice.

First off this is a ceramic type of heater. Not the fan type of infra-red. There are many pros and cons of each type. Naturally it does get a bit warm (some may say hot) in front, so if you have pets or children be careful.

Whats really nice is you can detach the side so to put part on a table or around something. There is a wire, but it's not going to stretch around the room. Or you can keep it all connected and maneuver the heater up. At the time I'm writing this, there are pictures at the top of this page you can click on to see what I am saying.

There are knobs you turn on/off and regular temperature. Not push buttons. Some prefer one over the other. Many find knobs easier.

What I will say is it's best to plug this directly into the wall outlet. BUT if you need an extension cord MAKE SURE you spend some extra money for a heavy duty contractors gauge extension cord, highest grade made! A regular extension cord WILL heat up and cause a fire. And plug it directly into the wall outlet. Look at the back of the extension cord package and ask in the store. You don't want a cold night, you're nice and comfortable and you smell smoke.

And be realistic, this is a great heater but it isn't going to heat up a large room. It's not radiator or kerosene heater. It's directional, depending upon how cold it is and your body, like all portable heaters it's just that, A portable zone heater. And it works great at that!

Do what it's made for and you will be warm and happy!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program File this one under, "how come no one thought of this before?"

It's a ceramic heater that allows you to detach the right half from the base unit (containing the controls) and deploy it up to six feet away.

This means that you and a significant other can each enjoy your own separate heater when you're snuggled up on a couch or sitting at the kitchen table. Or you can have heat on your face and feet simultaneously, when you're seated at a desk. Or you can have the two heaters directing their heat at you from the left and right, enveloping you in warmth.

The two halves feature fan-driven ceramic heaters with red lights that come on to show they're working.

You can choose to fire up just the left half, or the right half, or both together. Note, however, that the single thermostat governs both sides. This means that you can't dial up separate settings for each side, though, of course, you can place one half farther away from you if you get too hot.

The reason I deduct one star is the plastic construction of the heater housings. In my experience, the plastic housings of ceramic heaters tend to warp or even melt from the heat; I prefer ceramic heaters with metal housings.

As I write this, in early Fall, I haven't had a chance to put this puppy through its paces over an extended period. When I do, I will return with a report on how the housings are holding up.

I see also that neither half of this heater has a user-serviceable air input filter like my Tatung Heat Devil. Whether this deficiency will lead to reduced performance over time is a question of concern. The product comes with a three-year warranty, however, which is fairly generous in this day and age.

You're supposed to be able to direct the right half in three directions -up, straight, and down -when it's attached to the left half, but it doesn't seem to click into place firmly to hold each position, and it's very easy to detach the half entirely as you try to position it. Straight ahead seems the best position when the two halves are united.

Otherwise the fans in the two halves are pretty quiet in operation, and the halves cycle on and off together without making loud clicks or annoying start-up noises.

So if you like the positioning flexibility this two-in-one heater gives you, you might want to give it/them a try. The price seems reasonable, and then your main day-to-day concern will be, "to halve or halve not"! (Sorry, I couldn't resist...)

UPDATE: The boiler in our apartment building was out overnight, and my apartment temperature dropped to 61 degrees. I deployed this heater pair, and I'm afraid it proved VERY slow at heating up the apartment. I would therefore recommend it primarily for those who want some spot heat delivered very quietly, like folks working at a desk or watching a movie at home. Those needing a heater to warm up a cold room rapidly will definitely want a different model, perhaps one of those Vornado whole-room heaters.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Positives:

* The split design.

* The space in the backs of both heaters to tuck away excess cord.

* Powerful.

* Heats large area.

* Relatively quiet.

* Tilt option for one half when both halves are attached.

* The sides unplug from each other for easier storage.

Negatives:

* DOESN'T turn off automatically when knocked over; No safety tip-over switch.

* The controls are only on one unit of this two-unit heater.

* Requires relatively large floor space because of the stand and horizontal design.

* Front gets very hot.

* The automatic temperature control switches heat on or off only, no gradual decrease high med low slightly annoying to hear it turn on and off and can mislead you to think that it is entirely off.

I was a little overwhelmed at the amount of floor space needed to use this heater. For a small, crowded room, or place with narrow halls or doors, I wouldn't recommend this version. The front get very hot, so you need at least 1½ feet, minimum, clearance.

SAFETY ISSUE: This heater has NO AUTO OFF (safety tip-over switch) for when it gets knocked over. Granted, the wide base makes this a little less likely to happen, but when separated the other side isn't as stable and becomes a serious fire hazard. The front of the heater gets hot enough to melt plastic, burn your fingers if in contact for a half a second, and possibly burn papers and things. You never would want it to tip over when hot. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns: "Use a heater with thermostat control and an automatic device that turns the heater off if it tips over."

You have 4 choices on the top dial: Off, left half only on, right half only on, or both sides on. This is convenient, if you remember to keep the half with the controls in the room you'll be using the most.

This heater cranks up really quickly, and isn't too loud when running. The lower dial controls what level of warmth to maintain. When the room reaches the warmth level you've designated, both sides will shut off. Read there is no high/medium/low where they are louder & blowing more heat vs quiet and blowing softly. Your options are on or off. This could be okay for many people, but I'm a light sleeper, and find the frequent on-off-on-off annoying.

Another reason the complete ON vs OFF is a downside: It can mislead you to believe the heaters are off entirely. I know it's good safety practice to unplug heaters and such when not in use, but sometimes you forget. Once I was running out the door, passed the silent, cool heater, and, just as I was leaving, heard it switch on. You should never leave space heaters running while unattended; it's a serious fire hazard.

This should be a good floor heater for people with average sized rooms, who aren't annoyed by noises, and who are very, very careful and not forgetful.

Shipped quickly....I bought this to heat quickly a finished part of my garage that I use as my man cave...love the detachable nature of the one side to be moved up to 3 feet from the unit. The unit heats quickly an area where two or so people sit for a short period...I don't use it to heat the entire 500 sq ft area...just the area I sit in.

good purchase for me.

I love using an indoor grill and thought I was stepping up with this one. Big mistake. It doesn't grill or broil the food, it kind of sautes it. Wish I hadn't thrown the box out, I'd send it back. Very disappointed.

This is a great indoor grill! Bought for my hubby who loves to grill but not in the snow. I decided to get this model with the broiler. We rarely use the broiler, but probably because we haven't researched what all we can do with a broiler. We rarely broil anything anyway. The grill does not smoke at all, and he can get his grill lines he wants too. This does cook fast, sort of like a george foreman fast. I thought he may use this occassionally, but we use it all the time for everything during the winter. Burgers, Steak, Chicken, shrimp, veggies, and fish, etc. We always mist with Pam before to avoid sticking, as we do with our outdoor grill. As the wife, I worried it would be a pain to clean. Not at all. The grill lifts off easily and a quick rinse, suds under running water and voila clean! We store in the pantry and it is lighter than it looks. We can easily grab it and put onto our countertop for cooking.

Best Deals on DeLonghi BQ100 Indoor Grill and Smokeless Broiler

I purchased this grill at the beginning of the year. It is perfect for a family of four or when we want to grill two packages of hot dogs for a group. The hot dogs come out just like they came off the outside grill. We use ours for burgers, steaks, fish, etc. I love it and would highly recommend. We have had no issues with the item not working properly and use it alot.

Honest reviews on DeLonghi BQ100 Indoor Grill and Smokeless Broiler

This product shows how a previously well thought of product name can fall victim to the greed of quick profits. This unit worked for all of 1 hour. The temperature control went bad and refused to heat above the warm level. Contact with the company proved a waste of time. There are no parts available for the product.

Simply replacing the control unit would have solved the problem, a simple matter, but their only approach was for me to shoulder the expense of shipping the unit to them. The cost easily exceeding the value of the unit when added on top of the initial cost.

Looking closely at the unit, the cheapness of construction was evident. I would recommend finding another brand.

I was shopping around for electric blankets and finally decided to buy a few of these throws. I saw these in the stores and felt compelled to write a review since I've been using them since November. First of all, the reason I bought these throws was because my apt is never warm enough at night during winter. Electric heaters aren't allowed in my building so I wanted to try these heated throw blankets.

After using them for a while, I must say that I understimated these blankets. I figured since I only paid $30 for them at walgreens, that they wouldn't be that great. They output a good amount of heat and have kept me and my family warm during the cold winter. It comes with 3 heat settings and they have been doing their job well so far. They do tend to shed after some use, but I decided to just stick them under our bed sheets and handwash them a few times to get rid of the lint. There are other types of blankets that don't shed, but I've always preferred this type of soft material. Just don't put any sweaters of black clothing on it! The blankets I have do come with an auto shut-off and I don't mind it. Usually by the time it shuts off I'm already asleep. The heat is also not meant to be really hot, but its warm enough to keep you toasty.

For the price, this blanket is a great deal. The material isn't of the greatest quality, but its still very soft and does its job. Everybody has their own preferences, I just prefer fleece. I also like the fact that the heat goes to certain parts of your body while your sleeping. For example, if your feet are cold, you feel more heat go towards that area. Basically, if you want something cheap and usefull that will keep you warm at night, then this is the blanket.

You can try to find another brand like I did, but you might be turned off that they are double the price. I don't want to get caught paying a lot of money for a blanket and then it stops working after a few years. I figure I can probably squeeze out a couple of years from these blankets before I buy new ones. When you put them under your sheets or use them to curl up on your couch, they do the trick!

I've owned this heated throw for about a year now. It works alright, and does a good job of keeping me toasty. However, the material is thin and flimsy, and after washing it one time, my dryer lint collector was full of fibers that came out, and the throw now has little bare patches throughout. I also wished I had just bought a regular heated blanket instead of a throw, because it's too short to cover me at 5'2". It's uncomfortable to lay on top of, because you can feel the wires, and the controller is easily adjusted/turned off accidentally.

Best Deals on Sunbeam Fleece Throw Electric Heated Warming Heating Blanket Home

This blanket is very thin and small. May be suitable for a child but will not cover an adult. It is also very thin and does not hold the heat in very much. It is not what I expected at all. Even with several blankets on top, it doesn't really stay warm. Either your feet or shoulders have to go uncovered. I'm only 5' 4" so it's not like it doesn't cover me because I'm too tall. As I said previously, it would be good for a child because of it's size and the fact that it doesn't get too hot.

Honest reviews on Sunbeam Fleece Throw Electric Heated Warming Heating Blanket Home

This only worked for three months before it quit working. Waste of money. I didn't save the packaging or I would be trying to return it.

Is the new model 530 as good as older Vornados that established the company as a quality innovator? In this review, I compare the new 530 to two older compact models that I own. These are the excellent model 180 compact fan(infinite speed, no longer available) and the very good 510 compact (3-speed and in very short supply watch out for merchants who substitute the current model 530 for the 510). These (and the larger, venerable model 280) have great features, quietness, quality, and durability. My comments should apply to the model 530 regardless of the color of the plastic case, since color has no bearing on performance in this product.

FEATURES

The 3-speed compact design is similar to that of the older models (note that some slightly more expensive Vornado models have infinite speed control instead of 3-speed but are otherwise the same). But the 530 has one major disadvantage that you're likely to miss in the promo copy. The fan head doesn't tilt as much as those in the older models. This model tilts only about 50 degrees, while the older fans tilt about 80 degrees. The older design is much better at getting air from the floor to the ceiling.

QUIETNESS

The whirring fan blades make as little noise as the older models (whisper quiet on low, moderate amount on medium, a lot of "whoosh" on high), but the 530 has an irritating low-pitched motor noise the older models don't have. Because it's low frequency sound, it will even go through walls.

QUALITY

Personally, I think the motor, because of the noise, must not be up to the quality of previous models. One of the fan blades on my 530 still had plastic from the molding process that hadn't been removed. Definitely a quality-control problem. My older models were all manufactured in the US; this one in China (judging from a recent visit to a store that had a number of Vornado models, the company's moved manufacturing of most, if not all, of their consumer market fans offshore).

DURABILITY

We'll have to see. Comes with a limited 5 year warranty (you must get an RMA and ship to Vornado in Kansas and other reviewers have complained about shipping and handling costs nearly equaling the cost of a new fan).

BOTTOM LINE

In my view, this fan departs from the Vornado tradition of quality and quietness. I don't recommend using the model 530 in a bedroom or other place where you need quiet due to the low-pitched motor noise. Note that the user manual pictures both the model 530 and the R2D2 looking model 630.

Vornado is well known for producing quality consumer fans. My 530 moves more air than much larger box fans. It also moves air in a more controlled, concentrated fashion. This is great for moving cool air from one room to another. It is also nice for ventilating a room at night where outside noise a problem as the window need only to be open ten inches or so.

The raw power of the fan is useful for more than just circulating air through a room. It allows for an intense cool blast of directed in face during my cardio workout. It is also good for drying towels and carpeting.

Despite my continued enthusiasm for the product, I did have some problems. The first is the rather loud motor noise/vibration at lower speeds. Secondly, there was an apparent problem with the first fan I purchased. It was dropped about two feet onto padded carpeting. This caused one of the fan blades to break off. Fortunately, Bed Bath and Beyond has a no hassle return policy.

It is interesting to note that Vornado frequently pitched "American Made" in their marketing collateral. When I checked the model number on the base for this review, I noticed the "Made in China" sticker on the bottom.

Best Deals on Vornado 530L Compact Whole Room Air Circulator

I made the terrible mistake of purchasing 4 of these "Vornado 530L High velocity 3-speed air circulators" from Amazon because of the glowing reviews and after doing a little research the fan looked nice in the images and I liked the idea the grill would snap off for easy cleaning. It didn't take long for me to realize I wasted a lot of money ($39.99 for each fan)... The problems started when fan 1's blade would seize up and stop turning. I would have to turn it offunplug it then take the grill off and try spinning the blade a few times (I think thats how my grandfather started planes back in world war one ^__^) it worked about a week then finally died. The problems continued with fan 2, it started making this terrible high pitched sqeeeeal at the worst possible times like for example 3am while I'm trying to sleep. Its like having nails being dragged across a chalk board continuiously, I couldn't deal with that for long so I put it out near the garbage pick up for my pillaging garbage pickup person to pick up. Now on to fan 3... Fan 3 is special because it started over loading my electrical outlet so I would have to reset it. I tried moving it to another area of my home but it still over loaded my outlets.

So out of the four fans that I've puchased last year, I only have one still working and it makes sqeaking sounds but not so bad as to keep me awake. For the purchase price of these fans I expected very good quality but I've gotten quality worse than cheap Lasko fans, in fact I've had Lasko fans that worked 4 and 5 years while these expensive vornados haven't lasted 8 months.

Very disappointing purchase and I don't recommend these fans at all. Buy at your own risk.

Honest reviews on Vornado 530L Compact Whole Room Air Circulator

I smoke so I use this fan pointed out my window to extract the smoke. I had one that lasted 8 years and it was on practically every minute.

Pros: It's easy to clean, which maybe why it lasted so long, and is quiet at lowest setting. The only reason I had to buy another one was because I had an accident cleaning it and I got too much water in the motor. oops

Cons: They'll probably stop making them by the time I have to buy another one!

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Vornado 530L Compact Whole Room Air Circulator

This is our second Vornado of this size. (Our other is at least 6 years old and still going quietly strong.)

We live in an older two story house. The builder put small 4x10 registers IN the floors of two of the bedrooms upstairs, but in the master a register 3" above the floor in the corner and pointed at the window! One of the bedrooms is now my office (the kids are GONE!)

We just got a new HVAC. As powerful as it is, there is a three to five degree difference between each of the upstairs rooms. The 1973 vintage ducts and registers fight back against such power. But the Vornados do the trick, and they do it quietly and efficiently to the point that the AC can be turned down 5 degrees during the day, and off at bedtime! When it's 101 outside, we're comfortable at 74-76 (and freeze at 73, but that's age not temperature).

The reason is that the Vornado truly CIRCULATES air through even the largest of the three rooms, and we put both in front of the registers pointed upward and on LOW. They're whisper quiet, and ... I can't say there's a breeze, but there's a flow of air that can be sensed rather than felt and the rooms cool off. I sleep like a baby, a very old baby, but the point is that I sleep.

Our AC and electric in general will probably be down another 10%. It's already down 16% because of the more efficient HVAC. And if I haven't stressed it enough, the Vornado is reliable, well built, and WHISPER QUIET!

I can not say enough good things about this wonderful blanket. You preheat the bed (don't need long at all) and when you get in, it's like slipping into warm cocoa. The heat is evenly distributed, the blanket itself is beautiful and I honestly don't think it is too heavy at all... We have another blanket on the bed that's definitely heavier. I love it so much that I have the exact same blanket in throw size to keep in my home office. I don't see how anyone could be sorry they bought this blanket. I love it!!!!

Best Deals on Sunbeam Camelot Dreams Microplush Heated Blanket

The fabric is very soft and plush. Overall the blanket is a good weight--not too heavy, not too light.

I like this blanket for the timer. The blanket turns off automatically after 10 or so hours. This I really appreciate as (with my old blanket) I frequently forgot; given that I travel frequently, sometimes my blanket was on for 4 or 5 days at a time. The pre-heater---I don't understand exactly why an electric blanket needs a preheater...but it has it!

The control dial has a minimal glow to it..enough so I can see it easily at night, but not so bright where the light disturbs my sleep.

I would have preferred a different color, but for the sale price.... I prefer quality and practicality over color coordination.

I absolutely love this blanket (right now), because in the fall when there's a chilly night, you don't even have to turn it on, and its still warm. It takes about 20 minutes to heat up, and once it does its hot, wake up and your sweaty hot. The blanket turns off after 10 hours, but who ever sleeps for 10 hours? psh. The downfall of this blanket is that its very thin, and you can feel all the ribbing, no biggie though. I haven't tried to wash this blanket yet, and I've only had it for a 11 days, used it 4 times, so who knows if it will be good after a year of use.

This compact heater seemed ok for the first couple days then it started tripping the breaker. Not sure if defective but the company was really great about returning it. Also it didn't put out as much heat as I thought it would for my 14x 30'room.

After using a smelly, non-ventilated gas firfeplace for years, I decided to give these a try. I bought 2, since at 1000 watts it is not going to heat our downstairs (kitchen/dining/living room)very fast, but after a week of use I am very pleased. Their mobility allows me to control the heating well (can bring both into the living room if my 2 small children are there to keep that very warm). Usually 3-4 hours of use of both in separate rooms(and closed windows)is enough to take the chill off. Very quiet, no smell and easy to move. I probably should have bought at least one of the 1500 watt units, but no problems at all with these units so far. Will likely get a 1500 watt unit soon.

Best Deals on Comfort Zone Infrared Quartz Heater - 3413 BTU, 1000 Watts, Model#

The manufacturer lists this space heater as having a `whisper quiet operation' and `fan-forced for wide heat dispersion'. My experience has been that neither of these claims is true. My most important need is to find a quiet heater. It was quiet for the first few days but then it began to make a loud click when it turns on in the middle of the night, and unfortunately it wakes me up each time. It also takes quite a while to heat up my bedroom that has a size much smaller than a larger den or living room. In fairness, it does eventually reach the desired temperature however. Additionally, when I press some of the buttons on my TV remote, the heater also responds and reduces the desired temperature by 1 degree for each time pressed. This can be a problem when watching TV in the bedroom. I seldom give a severely poor rating to any product, but this time I must rate this one with only 1 star. Not only does it miss meeting my most important needs, it advertised that it DOES meet those needs. For that reason it receives the lowest possible rating. realize that all electric heaters put out a max of a little more than 5000 btu's per their 1500 watt rating. so do not be fooled into spending more on features to get nothing. it is good to have a thermostat for auto temperature control but beyond that money is wasted on remote controls and the like. up to 50 dollars for a fan forced or oil filled heater with thermostat is the sensible way to go.

I purchased this heater in February 2012. It no longer works! I can't get my money back and there is no way to get it fixed. We have cleaned the filter as suggested and nothing. The thermostat never worked at all, but it did heat the room sufficient so we let it go. Now it won't do anything! I am so disappointed!!! Here's another thing we figured out. The remote frequency is on the same as our flat screen TV. It messed our TV volume up and made the sound go out over and over. I hate to tell this, but we sent back 2 different televisions thinking they were faulty because of this heater. I would love to have another(different brand of course) heater but were told by Amazon we weren't entitled to anything after 30 days. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!

3 thermostats later, I finally found the right one. This particular thermostat happens to be a replacement for an old Honeywell Chronostat. Honeywell's website doesn't list current replacements, but this thermostat controls the White-Rodgers zone control valve on our hot water heating system. Why it's so difficult to figure out what thermostat will work I don't know, but for a three wire system on a White-Rodgers zone valve, this one does the trick.

Way happy, the airconditioner tech was going to charge us much more than this to come out to the house and all we had to do is plug the new thermostat in and go...

The Lasco 5812 is a very good heater especially since it has stronger fan forced air than any other I have tried & still not loud, even stronger air flow than one costing over $90. It sends the air along the floor rather than out of the top. Moving warm air can be felt for at least 5 feet from the heater. I measured it. One serious drawback is that the thermostat even though it controls the heating of the air from a lower level of 750 watts to a high of 1500 watts, it will not cut the heater off when the thermostat setting is reached. It will only lower it to the 750 watt maintenance level. This is not a problem if the heater is located where you can turn it off yourself when the room is warm enough or the temp is too cold for it to need to shut off. Where I find a problem is in my office which is unattended for hours at a time and over night or I am away on a trip. I like to keep my computer, etc. at least 60 degrees when I am not around. Since the outside temp varies from night to day which affects the inside temp, this heater will stay on even when warm enough although it will lower to the low wattage. This means that my office could get a lot hotter than desired during the day when unattended. Because of this, I use the more expensive $90+ heater in my office even though it seems not to put out as much warm air and certainly not as strong an air flow as the Lasco 5812. The Lasco works as designed very nicely, but uses electricity even when not necessary. To be just about perfect, all it needs is a thermostat that will turn it off rather than just provide controlled high and low heat. It is great when you will be around to shut it off yourself if the temp over reaches your desired amount like in your den while watching TV. I like mine regardless. Besides, the company does not want you to leave the heater unattended for safety sake anyway...Dan

The build quality is great, but it is louder than most heaters and the thermostat will never shut off the heating element even at the lowest setting. The noise isn't outrageous, but it's definitely on the loud side compared to other forced-air heaters I've used. As for the thermostat, this probably wouldn't be a problem on a very cold night or in a large room. In my small room on a mildly chilly night, however, the heater remains on even when the dial is on the lowest setting. I was roasting. Too bad. The build quality seems really solid, and it comes with a three-year warrantee.

Great Little heater, good Build Quality, unit won't shut off when at set temp . It's just a simple good little heater. It has a thermostat control, power switch, auto shut off if tipped, and forces are from the top and hot air forced to the bottom so you can place the heater against the wall if needed

I bought this space heater in October of 2008 from a vendor on Amazon.com. I'd gone back to school and was renting a basement apartment with little heat. This heater made the late autumn/early winter of Michigan's Upper Peninsula bearable, and my small room livable.

It's been going strong in Mid-Michigan, all through the night, in front of the front the door, for over two years. I place it there at night and it really mitigates the chilly air that comes off the steel door. The fact that the hot air comes out the bottom makes my cats happy and my feet, too. Now, winters here can get down to -30 deg F, and if the wind's blowing over 10-15 MPH, even colder. Late 1970's trailer homes aren't known for being well-insulated and this really helps keep the propane bill down by making the room I'm in warm and comfortable.

If I turn it past midway, the poor heater turns itself off and has to sit for about 45 minutes until I can turn it back on, but it can run through the night, 8 to 9 hours, on the lowest (750 W) setting or just slightly higher. It's blowing warm/hot air, so it's not silent, but it's a white noise so it's very easy to ignore. If you want to use the highest setting, use if for only 40-45 minutes or it will turn itself automatically. I think there's a fuse that overheats at that setting.

It has a very heavy cord, which makes it ideal if you need to step over it or tug on it inadvertently. It's not fancy, but it got me through three days of no propane during a cold spell of 10 deg F during the day and -20 deg F at night. It's been kicked, pushed over, had cats run into it, had groceries dropped on it, and it still does what I purchased it for: it keeps me warm, supplements my furnace so I'm only heating the room I'm in and not the whole trailer, and it keeps the cold drafts from my feet.

I was actually thinking of buying another one because of both its toughness and its decent cost. Well, if this one does quit working, I will most definitely replace it. It's not perfect, it's not pretty, but it does the job it's built for, and if I could, I'd give it four-and-a-half stars.

UPDATE:

This heater lasted three and a half years, giving up the ghost in January of 2013 after three power outages and two subsequent surges. I will definitely be purchasing another one. This heater was both durable and effective.

I just received this heater today. The problem is that the heat never shuts off, becuse the thermostat controls only the variation between 1500 watts and 750 watts. Even at the lowest possible thermostat setting the heat elements will never shut off. If you have a large, cold room it's fine, but if you're trying to heat a small room, such as a bathroom, or using it to supplement a heater in a larger room, the heat will keep on building and building up without control. Obviously, in a bedroom situation you would have to get up at night to manually adjust the heater--turn it off--then get up later to turn it back on. This is not a heater that can be used without constnt supervision and manual adjustment.

I called customer service to find out if this is a design flaw, or am I missing something, but have not received a call back. Rereading some of the reviews of this heater, I notice that some people mentioned this design flaw, but it was not stated vehemently enough to disuade me from buying the heater. I am bluntly stating it now; this is an enormous problem.

Does the job for a reasonable price. Takes a minute to install.

Gripes If they ever revise the product improvements are needed:

*Only updates your settings to the cooler every 30 seconds. If I'm too hot or cold this is too slow.

* The temperature and humidity displays default to the measured values and switch to the set values when you start to change the settings. There is plenty of room to display both at once.

* I intended to wall mount the product but it is not suitable for that. As it turns out I like the desktop location better, but this should be made wall mountable.

* The humidity is displayed as a large font size, the temperature a small size. Should be reversed!

That said, I am glad to have this.

I haven't bought the product yet. I am unsure whether the thermostat will work with my swamp cooler. It seems that Orka does not want to answer my questions or to sell me the product. if they won't return my call I'm not sure how good they are for warranty purposes.

I've used virtually every dehydrator on the market and even a few home-made versions. Trust me when I say that this dehydrator is the best you can get for the money.

The round tower-type dehydrators are inexpensive for a good reason: they aren't worth it.

-The trays are flimsy and crack too easily.

-The holes on these trays are too big to use with herbs or diced foods, so you must use the mesh inserts.

-You only have about 1/2" of space between trays, so you cannot dry bulky items--like flowers or granola.

-When it comes to fruit leather, the only thing more inefficient than the round shape is the hole in the middle. Yes, I know they come with fruit leather trays, but have you ever tried to store fruit leather pealed off of the tray and rolled up? A shredded mess to begin with and a sticky mess once they've stored for a while.

-With the motor on the bottom any food or juices that fall through the cracks shortens the life of the machine.

-The drying process in these tower-types is not uniform--the bottom trays dry quicker than the top trays, the center dries quicker than the edges.

-Some models have only recently started adding temp controls. Still, it does little good because there is more heat on the bottom than the top.

-The motor is loud--I had one model I had to run on the porch because it was so loud.

The two round models I bought died within a year and a half of use.

The next best dehydrator on the market is the L'Eqip. It is much quieter, comes with a healthy 10yr warranty and has temperature controls. But it is a hybrid with many of the faults of the round models and few of the benefits of the square-shaped Excalibur. It still has a hole in the middle. It still dries unevenly. It has deeper trays but you still can't dry flowers. It still has a motor on the bottom. I have a friend who dried berries in her L'Equip. They leaked on the motor and it died the first summer of use. Now granted, the folks at L'Equip stood by their machine and replaced it for her with no hassle, but how many times do you want your summer-time dehydrating held up while you wait for your replacement to come?

The Excalibur is perfect for anyone who is serious about dehydrating. Here are the features that I like:

-Heat source and fan are in the back, forcing air to distribute evenly throughout the chamber. Other than the way you place the food, there is no reason for uneven drying spots.

-Love the timer. I can set it and leave. It'll turn off automatically whether or not I'm there. That means 'round the clock drying during the height of your summer harvest. Put the food in when you go to bed, wake up to dried food and put another batch in.

-Temp control lets you choose low heats for herbs and flowers, higher temps for fruits and jerky.

-Love the square trays. For fruit leather I line the trays with plastic wrap and spread the fruit puree out. When it's dry I cut the leather into 2" wide strips, roll them up and secure with the tail end of the plastic wrap. The plastic peels off easily when it's time to eat.

-BIG trays--you can pack a LOT of food into this. This is especially important at the height of the summer harvest when there's a non-stop stream of food that needs drying. (This is also the one single thing that is in my negative column--the trays don't fit flat in my kitchen sink, making them a little hard to wash. I solve this by washing them in my outdoor garden sink--old fashioned tubs on a stand. Since I like the big trays, I really shouldn't complain.)

-Mesh liner on all trays. I can dry herbs, diced onions and finely chopped fruits without having it fall to trays below. No food cross-contamination means I can dehydrate more than one thing at a time.

-Removable trays. If I have bulky items--flowers, herbs, granola, etc--I can just remove every other tray and have another 1/2" or more room.

-Makes a great proofing box for sourdough. Also good for culturing yogurt, esp if you like to make it in larger containers. For both sourdough and yogurt, make sure it is covered so that the moving air doesn't dry it out.

-10 yr warranty. I've had mine for almost 15 yrs and it's still going strong. Every year the money I save on herbs alone pays for what it originally cost me. That means this machine has paid for itself 15 times over.

If you're at all serious about dehydrating, don't waste your money like I did--get the best from the get go. That's the Excalibur.

(Written by Ross' wife. He's also happy that I like it so well and have gotten so much good use from it. I have more information on dehydrating in general and comparin Excalibur with others in particular: )

We absolutely love our excalibur dryer it works so much better than the cheaper, round versions that are out there. However, there are a few things we hadn't considered prior to buying that we wish we had:

*****This model has no timer, thus no auto-off. If I had it to do over again I'd buy the one with the 26 hour timer for sure! We recently started a recipe only to realize it would be done at 4 a.m. ugh! not a fun time to get up just to shut off the dryer!!

*****There is no on/off switch, just the plug. I don't know if the model with the timer has an on off button or not, but I really hate items that don't offer one. Perhaps this is no biggie to most folks, but it really bugs me.

*****This thing is BIG! We had to do some serious rearranging to make room for it on our counter, and unfortunately the only place it fits is right in the middle so that it's the first thing you see when looking at our kitchen from the den (we have an open concept floor plan). It is also so big that we cannot fit it in any of our kitchen cabinets or drawers. So, we either have to leave it out on the counter all the time (and it aint' pretty just a big black box) or we have to carry it into the garage.

*****If you don't get a deal that offers the teflex and plastic mesh sheet liners with it (enough for every tray) than be sure to buy them you will need them for most recipes.

*****If you're not going fully raw or making massive quantities for a large family you may want to consider the smaller ones so that the size doesn't become a big issue for you as it has for us.

All-in-all this dryer is the top in dehydrators for good reason and you'd be doing yourself a disservice to buy a different brand. However, consider the issues I listed above to help you get the best set up for your situation.

NOTE: Some folks have posted good solutions to the timer issue in the comments take a look.

Best Deals on Excalibur 9 Tray Deluxe Dehydrator

I've had my Excalibur for a while now and use it on a regular basis. Before purchasing it, I tried several of the round type, including the Gardenmaster. This dehydrator beats the round variety as it has the side fan and adjustable thermostat. The side fan means you very rarely have to rotate trays and it cuts the drying time. The Excalibur is also much easier to clean than the round dehydrators. Besides using it for drying food, I take the trays out and use it to raise bread and make yogurt. Don't bother with the 5 tray version you'll wish you had went for the 9 tray instead. The added height inside the 9 tray makes it easy to use for raising a bowl of bread dough.

Honest reviews on Excalibur 9 Tray Deluxe Dehydrator

Bought the 9 tray dehydrator with timer from the factory. I have gone through 2 fans. the first fan stopped working about 16 hours into operation. The second fan stopped working about 1 hour into operation. The second fan was really noisy and didnt sound right from the start. I am now waiting for a whole new back assembly with a new fan and heating element and all. What a joke I bought this Dehydrator because i couldnt find any negative reviews on it. I will wait to see if this new piece will fix the dehydrator or not if now im going to throw the thing into heavy traffic. when it was working it worked great i made some darn good jerky with it. Customer service has been good. I am thinking i just got a bad dehydrator but if this replacement doesnt work i will move my rating to a 1 star. If it does work i will move it to a 3 star. I always try to do alot of research before i buy a product and try to buy the best on the market for the money. So it was a real kick in the nuts to have this supposedly great product take 2 dumps on me. not too happy right now but will update when the replacement parts come in.

***************************

**UPDATE**

Excalibur sent me a whole new back piece to the dehydrator no questions asked. I put the replacement part on and let it run on high heat for 16 hours. No problems. I made some beef jerky and the dehydrator was used for 8 hours on high heat. Beef jerky turned out great. Once I removed the Jerky from the unit I tried turning the unit back on. The heating coils got red hot but no fan for the third time.

I purchased my White 9 tray Excalibur 3000 series 2 years ago and I'm so very pleased that I did!

I purchased it directly from Excaliber and not through Amazon or any of its third party sellers. At the time, Excaliber/KBI direct was the only way to purchase the 3000 series white model but the price was good, shipping free, the service excellent ~ plus, and a big plus with me, a free 10 year warranty!

As it is quite a large(but light-weight)appliance, the white is less imposing than the black model in my small white kitchen. It has worked exceedingly well to meet the requirements of my raw vegan diet. It did get a lot of use the first year that I had it, more so then than now. I have been eating less dehydrated food so don't use it as often as I first did but still I find it easy to use and handy when I do need a dehydrator and I'm glad to have one.

My only problem, and it's a minor one, is the noise. It is not especially quiet but I still give it 5 stars. I have remedied the problem easily enough by simply moving it to another room when I am dehydrating an item that requires a longer drying period, such as the tomatoes I'm dehydrating right now which have been drying for 3 days at low temperature.

If you are shopping for a good dehydrator, Excalibur is the one to buy. I recommend getting the 9 trays too. You'll be glad to have them over the smaller ones. And do shop around for the best price and consider Excaliber for that warranty.
