I have owned this machine (8-cup, chrome) for over ten years and everyday when I make my morning cappuccino I love it more. You can spend more for a machine that measures the coffee, tamps it, pulls the water through and steams the milk for you, but you can tip the kids behind the counter at Starbucks and they'll do the same thing. Making espresso should be a little art and a little science and this machine an impeccable balance of the two. If you aren't the kind of person who takes joy in mixing the perfect martini, making a risotto that whispers with flavor, or whipping a meringue to impossibly tall peaks, this probably isn't the machine for you.

The La Pavoni is for the person who will find tremendous joy in going to the lengths required to make a perfect cappuccino by hand everyday. (And don't bother using anything less than Illy Cafe coffee in it.)

I owned one of these for three years, and agree with the only other reviewer that this item is only for those who take joy in fiddling with the many variables of grind, pull speed, preheating, and coffee bean choice. If you don't want to put in all the extra effort to coax performance from a beautiful piece of Italian engineering, save your money and buy something automated.

That said, I thought a potential buyer might want to read about some of these idiosyncracies. First, no matter what you do, the first shot you pull will taste bad. Preheat, pull hot water for the first shot--nothing will change the fact that the first shot doesn't taste good. I resigned myself to wasting that first shot.

Second, if you want to pull shots soon after each other, you'll find out that this unit does not have a pressure release mechanism. So when you unseat the filter holder soon after pulling the shot, there's still pressure against the grounds, which will now *poof* blow back outward onto your fingers and the machine. You'll get used to knowing when it's been "long enough", and in a pinch you can *carefully* ease the holder out, slowly letting the pressure to escape.

With a pump espresso maker, you can pull "lungo" or "ristretto" shots, which have (respectively) larger or smaller shot sizes. Since the amount of grounds stays the same, this means more watery or stronger. But with this unit you have to live with the pull size implicit in the amount of water moved by that piston for a pull. They give you two holders, which gives you two sizes. The smaller one is the only one I ever used, which was a ristretto--a good choice, if you have to take a single choice!

Unlike most espresso machines for the home market, you have steam available all the time on that side steam wand--you don't need to switch it into "steam mode". The steam wand is a little dated in design, but I got very good results out of it. They supply you with some gimmicky steam/frothing attachments which you should ignore.

For a party, you'll run out of water sooner than you expect. The reservoir is heated up to steam and is thus under pressure. You do NOT open it until it has cooled down enough to release all the steam. So unlike those pump units, this one is really not for making a lot of shots in a row.

Let me finish by saying that although most of what I've said about this machine are its misfeatures, it is a really, really likable unit! The previous reviewer was SO right in comparing it to making a martini. I'd add that it's even more like fiddling with your stereo and speakers until you finally get it sounding *right*. With the manual pull lever you'll get a feel for what the correct grind feels like. You'll know what the right pull speed is--your muscles will start to remember it. And out will come that lovely espresso with its golden crema--what a way to start the morning!

The only problem I had was the wood on the boiler cap was cracking. This is not a common problem that they had. I sent the damaged cap back and they replaced it with a new one. The coffee grind is the trick to making this espresso machine work properly.

Honest reviews on La Pavoni PPG-16 Professional 16-Cup Espresso Machine, Brass

La Pavoni PPG-16 Professional 16-Cup Espresso Machine, Brass

I purchased the 16 cups La Pavoni professional (brass model) and have been extremely happy with it's quality in pulling espresso shots, foaming milk, and overall quality in craftsmanship. It is definitely a purchase for the next 20+ years.

HOWEVER, when I first received it I went through a lot of frustration (probably 50+ cups wasted) to finally understand what it took to make perfection in a cup.

Before considering this machine, understand that you will require a grinder that has the ability to adjust the fineness/coarseness of coffee bean grinds. Purchasing coffee grinds from cafes will not work. I figured they would have commercial grade grinders so what's the difference? Well, the difference is that this La Pavoni needs an EXACT grind level, and I mean exact! If the grinds are too coarse, water will pass through the grinds quickly and you will not achieve the sought after crema (plus the espresso will taste like burnt toast). If the grinds are too 'fine', you will not be able to pull the La Pavoni lever down to release the pressure build up (i.e. the coffee will not pour/drip) and you'll be forced to remove the filter prematurely....and poof! scalding grinds exploding everywhere. I chose to pair my La Pavoni machine with a Mazzer Mini grinder ($750) which is also a well made machine made in italy. There might be a cheaper solution, but after so much frustration I experienced with pre-ground coffee from cafes I would have done almost anything to get it right. Just to give you an idea on the amount of frustration, at one point I even contemplated scraping this whole 'manual' art form and getting an automated machine. Those were some painful days let me tell you..

So know I have a top of the line espresso machine and top of the line espresso grinder, this should automatically bring perfection right? Wrong. You will also require a tamper (which presses the fresh grinds down into the filter). A plastic tamper is provided with the La Pavoni which can be useless unless you're accustomed to knowing your own strength. It is said that the appropriate amount of weight to apply when tamping down the grinds is 30lbs. And again, if this step is not done properly it will affect the outcome of the shot: press too hard, the grinds will become paste; too light, you'll end up making coffee instead of espresso. A 51mm tamper that has a 'click' mechanism to indicate 30lbs has been applied costs around $90 (the brand I purchased was espro).

To recap:

La Pavoni Professional = $1400

Burr Grinder = $750

30lbs Tamper = $90

Total Investment = $2240+tax

.....perfection isn't anywhere close yet by the way, but the tools are all there. There's lots of research to be done on your part, but this La Pavoni machine can produce some of the finest grade espresso drinks I've had the pleasure of critiquing. Like I mentioned earlier, at the time I hated the experience of spending so much money and time and still failing on an epic scale. It takes practice upon practice, and 3 months later I'm still learning. I can, without a doubt, pull a great espresso shot with excellent crema full of flavour. Now-a-days I have to resist the urge to make one and am constantly annoying my wife with offers of another cup.

Prior to the La Pavoni, I had a decent Breville machine that was automatic. One button, it made a consistent shot and I raved about it. Now, I can't even enjoy a cup from the Breville because the difference in flavour is so obvious.

My advice to those who want something effortless that doesn't take 10mins from your morning routine, I'm sure you can purchase a quality automatic machine for

Before purchasing for self installation make sure that there is an electrical outlet (plug) in the space below the firebox. If there is, use a lamp to test whether it is connected or not (only one outlet will have power). I chose this particular version of the FBK-250 (fireplace is a Lennox LMDV-4035-CNM) because of the rheostat (speed control) and the temperature sensor. On all the other models that I saw the speed control was either a wall mount kit (light dimmer switch style) or a small plastic box designed to be mounted in the space under the fireplace. This model has the much easier to install (no work at all) magnetic temp sensor and the speed control box is metal not plastic (also designed to be mounted in the space below the fireplace). The instructions are written for a contractor so they can seem a bit vague, but if you read the instructions and look at the place where you will be installing the blower it will all make sense. The install was very easy. The only "issue" was mounting the speed control box. The instructions show several fireplace models, but none matched mine exactly. The instructions indicated that there were pre-drilled holes that were to be used for securing the box. My fireplace does not have them and I had no desire to drill into the bottom of the firebox. I used velcro to mount the box upside-down on the floor of the space below the firebox. The fan works well. It doesn't push a great deal of air, but it does warm up a room in a hurry. The unit comes on a few minutes after the fireplace starts and runs for a few minutes after the fireplace is turned off. I hope this helps with your decision.

Found this listed in the manual for our gas fireplace and my wife (who is constantly cold in the fall/winter) really wanted it. Shipped quickly, and the instructions on youtube were very helpful when installing it. The only issue I ran into was that I had to dismantle the thin door at the bottom of our fireplace because the blower was too large to fit through. Once I removed the door completely though using Alan wrenches it slid in just fine. Got it positioned, secured it to the back wall and floor and powered it up works great! I'd say it makes the fireplace 3x-4x more effective because it circulates the hot air throughout the room. Definitely worth it!

Product works just fine. Description doesn't say instructions are for contractors only. Terms and vocabulary are for professional contractors. I had to disassemble my whole gas fireplace piece by piece because the fan was too big to fit in the front opening. Scrapes cuts and all it works fine but that's something I'll never do again. Much more than I bargained for.

The set up on this took all of 15 minutes. The product works well, but could blow harder. I would recommend spending the extra money to get this model, as the rheostat is convenient and the auto-on/off is great. The wife and dogs love it!

Best Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker Deals

Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

Look...making yogurt isn't that compicated. All you need is a good starter culture, a stable and appropriate temperature and clean equipment so you get the proper cultures growing. The Salton 1-quart does a beautiful job and you can't beat the price. If you've never made your own yogurt before, this is the unit to buy. Don't spend tons of money on a piece of equipment that does nothing more than keep the milk warm for a few hours. Realize, it is much easier to just buy yogurt at the supermarket. But if you don't like keep buying little plastic containers, and if you don't mind going to just a little effort to make your own foods, you'll enjoy making yogurt. I like to use milk straight from the bulk tank at a local dairy farm and either organic Stonyfield (NH)or organic Butterworks (VT) yogurt as a starter. Homemade yogurt doesn't always have the homogenous and solid consistency of store-bought, but I've had very good results (quite comparable with commercial yogurts) with the Salton, plus I can use whatever flavorings I want from real maple syrup to my favorite jams. I even use the yogurt in place of sour cream. The possibilities with home-made yogurt are almost unlimited!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Why pay up to $0.80 for a cup of yogurt when you can make your own easily? All you need is skim milk, a cup of plain yogurt or powdered starter (healthfood store or mail order) optional dry milk and electricity.

If you have kids and they gobble yogurt up by the case, this handly appliance will repay you very quickly. If they insist on cups, save and clean the plastic ones from the store, or get small containers from the housewares department. Put juice-sweetened jam or crushed fruit and honey in the bottom and make home-made treats that are less expensive and have less sugar.

Why scald the milk? If you are using fresh milk, as opposed to the ultra pasturized tetrapacks (like Parmalat) you scald the milk to kill enzymes that can prevent the yogurt from forming. Why use dry milk added? The added milk solids make a stiffer yogurt. If you are going to make smoothies and yogurt shakes, don't bother to add the dry milk.

This yogurt maker holds a quart and doesn't have the goofy single containers that other yogurt makers have. A quart is a good size for a family. This maker will serve you well.

Best Deals on Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker

I use this to make several quarts of yogurt a week. You can make yogurt without a specific yogurt maker, but it's a headache if you don't have an oven with digital settings that let you set the temperature very low. I never quite succeeded with any other method, but this seems to be foolproof. I plug it in, it goes on. I unplug it, it goes off. If only my vcr were this simple! So no, you're not paying for features, but features are not always useful anyway.

Another nice thing is that you can throw out the silly inner container it comes with, and use a widemouth quart jar, or even a recycled quart yogurt container, to make your yogurt in, so you don't ever have to transfer it to another container.

You can make your yogurt with organic milk and at a price that is dramatically cheaper than buying it in the store (mine comes out to be 1/5 the cost of bought organic yogurt).

It also makes yogurt cheese almost affordable. Just toss your yogurt in one of those reusable coffee filters (Kmart and Target sell them) and the strained yogurt becomes very thick, a good replacement for cream cheese and sour cream, among other things. Try it in cheesecake yum!

Honest reviews on Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker

I bought the Salton quart size yogurt maker and use it fairly often. Here's how I use it to make nonfat yogurt.

» Place the Salton yogurt maker in a convenient but out-of-the-way location where it can run for a few days. Plug it in.

» Add one cup of nonfat dry milk powder to a gallon of skim milk and mix well. This makes the resulting yogurt thicker and more nutritious. (I've read that non-instant is better for this but haven't tried it. Any experience with this, anyone?)

» Heat milk to 185-190 degrees F, stirring frequently.

» Cool milk to 110-115 degrees F. (I usually use an ice water bath. Stir the milk frequently and monitor its temperature closely. This only takes a few minutes.)

» Stir a cup to a pint of plain nonfat yogurt with live active cultures (usually from the previous batch, sometimes from a commercial product) into the cooled milk. Whisk well.

» Decant the inoculated milk into the Salton quart container and four other clean wide mouth quart canning jars. Put the Salton container in the yogurt maker and the lidded quart canning jars in the refrigerator.

» Culture the yogurt to your preferred state of solidity and tartness. It's edible in a few hours but becomes stiffer and tarter the longer you leave it. I usually let it go 24 hours (no kidding-I like it tart!).

» When the batch is done, cool it either for several hours or overnight in the fridge or, if you're dying to eat it, more quickly in an ice water bath (no stirring!). At this point the yogurt is setting. If it gets jostled or stirred anytime before it's completely cooled its consistency will be looser and runnier.

» When you're ready to make the next batch (or immediately, to keep the ball rolling until you've processed all your quarts), put a wide mouth canning jar of inoculated milk into the yogurt maker. (I used to just take them directly from the fridge. It works, but the resulting texture of the yogurt is distinctly thicker at the bottom of the jar. Now I zap the milk on half-power in the microwave in 30-second runs, stirring between, until it's at 110-115 degrees F. It works like a charm!)

SUMMARY: The Salton YM9 has been a trouble free unit. The only improvement would be larger capacity, such as the Yogourmet machine has (though at more than twice the price). Knowing what I do, I'd buy it again.

I would love to give this nice simple little tool 5 stars, but it does have the fault of making itself a lot more complicated than it needs to be! The included yogurt container is goofy, the lid does not snap on, and the spoon is fairly useless. I just use a quart canning jar or peanut butter jar. Don't be put off by the fancy directions, its really easy. Why scald the milk, it was just pasteurized. I gently warm it up to body temperature before adding the starter. We have just put cold milk and 1/2 cup of starter in the jar, and let it warm up in the yogurt maker, but it takes a lot longer. Also, adding extra dry milk is not necessary, it just makes the yogurt a little firmer. Set yourself free from all that fussing, and enjoy some nice fresh yogurt. The basic appliance, the incubator, works great and can save you money. Our local stores do not carry good plain yogurt, so we just keep organic whole milk in the freezer and make our own.

This console is one of my better purchases. We have a 37 inch television and it fits beautifully, as do hundreds of cds in the cabinetry down below. But the big deal is the electric fireplace, and do I have a good story to tell about this!

I put this cabinet together by myself with a minimum of expletives. Really, the instructions were quite clear, written by someone whose native language is English. And I had an electrician come and put in a separate circuit (15 amps) dedicated to this unit. (Don't even THINK of sharing this unit with another device on the same circuit: you'll blow your circuit breaker.) Well, it was summer, so I didn't turn on the fireplace. We use a pellet stove, and put this unit in the living room, which is furthest away from the stove, hence the coldest. Hoo boy was I disappointed to find that the stove didn't work. No way, no how, this stove was not functioning. So I emailed the company that makes it (Southern Enterprises) and they sent me, FREE, a replacement fireplace -and paid for the pickup of the dead unit. I was expecting a form letter back telling me that I had waited too long to tell them.

Given the quality of this unit, its stylishness, and its compact nature, everyone who comes over to our house wants to know where we got it. I happily tell them, and I recommend purchasing this unit without any hesitation. Great, great company, this Southern Enterprises.

This is the infamous Whirlpool/Kitchenaid thermal fuse that blows when you run the cleaning cycle on the Kitchenaid KGSA906PSS range. You know, the problem everyone has, but Kitchenaid denies even happens; the reason I'll not buy Kitchenaid appliances again. All because of this fuse. Or rather, the poor implementation of the fuse into the design.

Anyway, when it blows about an hour into the cleaning cycle because by design the oven gets so hot it blows the fuse (good job, Kitchenaid!), the door will remain locked closed and the timer display will go black. No clock, no controls. The burners will still light. That means power is getting to the stove, but the oven will be dead.

So if you need the oven, you are out of luck. DO NOT CLEAN THIS OVEN if you need it within a week.

You will have to turn off the gas, unplug the power and disconnect the supply pipe from the range (I do that by removing the storage drawer and reaching underneath to disconnect from the range) then pull the range out enough so you can get behind it. There's a 24"x24" panel on the back held on with about 15 black square drive screws and an upper panel that is held on by a few Phillips drive screws. After removing the panels, you can see the fuse, attached to the back of the oven box, waiting for you to run the cleaning cycle so it can blow and cost you $40.

After I got the replacement part reinstalled and put all the screws back in, plugged it in and reconnected the gas, everything worked as before.

So I went out to the garage and took the blown fuse apart. It's a shame you cannot reset the fuse. There's no real reason you can't except they didn't design a little reset button into the fuse.

The fuse "blows" when a little bimetal disc inside the fuse heats up and pops like a bottle cap, which allows a little plastic piston to move. This in turn allows two electrical contacts to separate. This turns off the power to the display, leaves the door locked and shuts off the gas to the stove. The oven then cools down, but the fuse stays in the "off" mode.

After replacing the part and getting the oven to work, I broke the Bakelite open on the old fuse to see the innards. All I really needed to do was drill a tiny hole through the metal outer cap (but not through the bimetal) then poke a toothpick into the hole and pop the bimetal disc back into its original shape. It's not worth the trouble, but in a real pinch, it might work. The other way is to jumper over the two contacts, but of course, that's not recommended. We've had this range since 2005, though, and the fuse never blew before...because we never ran the cleaning cycle. So the fuse is there only in case you run the cleaning cycle. Apparently the oven box gets so hot during the normal cleaning cycle by design it can't stand it.

Both my wife and I live-chatted with Kitchen reps. They asked if an electrical fuse had popped at the box and other lame excuses, all while denying there was any reported problem. But a quick net search shows many people have had this problem. It's big enough that Amazon carries this one part and "8300802" returns a lot of hits.

I'm glad Amazon had the part. It got here in a hurry and it was the right part. Kitchenaid needs to stick with stand mixers and get out of the appliance biz.

Thermal Switch Can be used with Fireplace Blowers for automatic Reviews

Thermal Switch Can be used with Fireplace Blowers for automatic blower operation # 19-SF2-115
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

This little thing works just as advertised. Hooked it up electrically in-line with the blower in the fireplace, and now the blower only comes on when the fireplace warms up (no more blowing cold air), and then after the fire is turned off, the blower stays on until the fireplace is cooled down.

I found some surplus neo-magnets at an office supply and crazy-glued them to the side tabs. That way, I could mount the switch, without drilling holes, to the bottom of the fireplace (actually, the inside top of the blower cavity).

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I have two Napoleon gas fireplaces in my home. The newer gas fireplace came with a thermoswitch to automatically turn on the blower when the fireplace gets hot. The older gas fireplace had a blower but it did not come with a thermoswitch. The automatic blower is a very handy feature. I wanted to upgrade my older gas fireplace to have this feature.

My local Napoleon dealer wanted $35 for a new thermoswitch. Amazon had a much better price. The only difficulty with the 19-SF2-115 switch is that it "turns on" at a lower temperature (110F) than the one supplied by Napoleon (120F).

I first tried installing this switch it to the side of the fireplace box (same location as my newer gas fireplace). The problem with this location, is that the sheet metal box stays warm at this location for a long time, even after the fireplace flame is turned off. I discovered that the blower would stay on for 3-4 hours after the flame turned off. This is probably why Napoleon uses a 120F switch instead of the 110F switch. By the way, the 120F thermoswitch switch takes a good 15 minutes to turn on.

By experimentation, I discovered that if I mounted the 110F thermoswitch on the sheet metal air deflector directly above the fireplace box (see attached photos), the blower starts approximately 2 minutes after the flame turns on and shuts off approimately 8 minutes after the flame turns off. It is the perfect location for this switch!

The switch is held in place by two magnets that I epoxied on to the sheet metal tabs on the switch (see attached photo). I wired the thermoswitch directly into the 110VAC blower circuit using a total of 8 feet of 250C high temperature wire (available on Amazon and the major auction site).

As a point of interest, I also have the gas valves on both gas fireplaces connected to a "millivolt" thermostat located on the other side of the room. The thermostat turns on and off the gas fireplace to maintain the temperature of the room. I set the thermostat in my basement to about 65F. It works very nicely to take the "chill" out of the basement.

Summary: The switch works well, but some experimentation with the location may be required.

Hope this review helps!

This switch works as designed and has an appropriate temperature range.

What is special is not so much the item, but the wisdom and advice of the seller.

My gas Fireplace had a number of design faults since new five years ago.

One of the issues was the fan control. The original supplied thermoswitch did not cut the fan in until 207 degrees F. The original switch was not fixed (You can not drill in a fire box). So the original unit flopped about above the box. Eventually the plastic insulators over the connectors crumbled due to heat, the switch moved and shorted against the fire box. In a shower of sparks the switch and solid state fan controller were blown and the breaker tripped at the panel.

I followed this sellers advice and used his switch that cuts in at 115 degrees F. I used the heat shrink over the connectors as extra protection.

The really brilliant piece of his advice was to use powerful small rare Earth magnets to secure the thermoswitch to an ideal location above the fire box in the airstream. Now this gas fireplace works better than ever.

So before you purchase this unit look at his installation advice and his pictures.

Unit is fine but nothing special about it. His advice free but priceless. Thank you!
