I bought two of these to use for cabinet cooling (receiver and PS3) but next time I have to replace a case fan I'm going with one of these. Here are the specs for the 80mm:

So basically they start picking up speed ~ 25C (77F).

Pros:

Quiet, smooth operation can't even hear them at the lowest speed

Separate speed sensor cable to attach to motherboard (if applicable)

Power connector has male/female molex so it can be chained together and not consume a power lead

Moves a lot of air as the temperature rises

Cons:

None yet... No cover plate? (but comes with screws)

They do a pretty good job of keeping up with the PS3 which pumps out a lot of heat during games. The exhaust of the PS3 faces these fans and they in turn move the air out the back of the cabinet. I just used an old 12v power supply to drive them and it is plugged into the receiver so they come on when the receiver comes on.

It's silent most of the time. It has a temp sensor on it by the hub. WHen the air going through it gets too hot....it steps up. It has a mid step which is fairly quiet, and at full tilt....it may be slightly noisier that the other fans in the 2u case. However, I put this at the exhaust of a PSU, so there is nothing in the way to muffle it.

Ambient in case temps down about 4-5 degrees...board just 1 or 2..

Now using these in both the 60, and 80mm flavors....I believe they hit the sweet spot dba/cfm. Highly recomend.

Since I have started using this unit I have cooked my best Thanksgiving turkey, my best Christmas ham and my best New Year's pork roast ever. The only reason it's not 5 star is that I've needed the booklet almost every time I've used it. The controls aren't difficult, but they aren't really intuitive either. I'd go 4-1/2 stars if I had the option.

Great idea, but be careful about transmission range.

If the receiver is too far away from the transmitter, or is otherwise unable to get a signal, the display

doesn't inform you of this problem. So, if the temperature is 150 degrees, and you walk out of range, the temperature

won't update. Meanwhile, your BBQ is burning and you don't know.

It would be great if the receiver beeped to indicate that it hasn't received a temperature update

in the last 30 seconds or so. Then, you would know need to get back into range.

But, as long as you're sure that you are always in range, the device works well.

Another gripe... Turning the device on requires a specific sequence:

1. Turn on the receiver

2. Turn on the transmitter, within 30 seconds

Otherwise, the receiver won't pair with the transmitter and you won't get updates.

And, if you turn the receiver or transmitter off then on, you won't get updates either.

(So, don't do that...)

I have cooked many steaks and a couple of briskets to perfection with this device.

The range has proved adequate at my house, where I am approximately 35 feet away from my smoker or grill with one wall in between.

It is important to follow the instructions and pair the base station with the remote monitor (similar to bluetooth and and cell phones) or they will not talk to each other.

I guess the bottom line is that it does do the job, but...

150 foot range? Not with a hurricane at its back. With brand new batteries, mine is a bit inconsistent at 25' line of site or 10' through an interior wall. Also, you can't disable that loud voice. When I'm cooking a 5 lb roast beef, I don't want her yelling "YOUR FOOD IS ALMOST READY!!! YOUR FOOD IS ALMOST READY!!!" when it's 10 degrees under the target temperature. I slow cook, and that means I still have a good half hour to go. I'd prefer a nice old fashioned beep.

Also, it seems that if it doesn't get a signal for a while, it simply stops updating and the temperature changes to "---" without any audible warning. Now you've got to go back through the startup routine to find out what the current temperature is.

The wall heater never had a wall thermostat. The wall heater had a hydraulic style gas valve. When I installed a new gas valve I selected a valve that would use a thermostat. This thermostat was easy to install and it works as advertised.
