As others have pointed out, this is NOT the old thermostat you've seen for the last 50 years. The CT87K, CT87N, T87K and T87N are recent updates. The old thermostats relied on a coiled bi-metallic strip and a mercury switch. The new ones have done away with the mercury with its disposal headaches and replaced it with an electronic sensor and switch.

I can't speak to the accuracy of the electronic switch (they're usually accurate to one degree F), but of three I had sitting in a box by my desk, two showed temperatures within one degree of each other and one was off by 3-4 degrees. That's a problem if you're relying on the display thermometer to set a comfortable temperature on the thermostat.

Then there's the battery. They don't tell you about the battery, not even in the user manual. If you poke around long enough, you can find a reference to it on the Honeywell web site. It's a lithium CR2450. They seem to be recharging it from the low voltage wires to the thermostat, but even then, it doesn't last forever, maybe 5-10 years if you're lucky. If you want to pry apart the thermostat, then pry out the circuit board, then search for and buy a new battery, then put it all back together the way it was, you can have a working thermostat again for just a couple of bucks. If you don't want to do that, or if you don't figure out why your new thermostat stopped working, you'll need to replace it.

Honeywell has taken a product that lasts as long as your house and replaced it with one you'll need to replace again and again. It's a good deal for Honeywell.

I purchased a CT87K heat only thermostat in October from a local home improvement center. (This is because the Mr. Heater 24Volt Thermostat I purchased through Amazon to go with my new Mr. Heater garage heater was defective.)

It's now seven months later. I went out into my garage this morning (as I do every day) and found that my heater was running and the garage was at least 100F! The thermometer on the thermostat was pegged all the way over! The thermostat was set to 40F since spring and it should have been just fine until fall when I need heat in the garage again. I was able to get the thermostat to shut off the heater by turning it up and then down all the way. After the heater cycled off, I unplugged it from the AC power and removed the thermostat from the wall base unit. I plugged in the heater again and checked the controller voltage to the thermostat and found that it was indeed within the acceptable range of 24-30V AC (it was 26.75V).

I read the warranty in the owner's manual and it said:

If the product is defective,

(i) return it, with a bill of sale or other dated proof of

purchase, to the place from which you purchased it; or

(ii) call Honeywell Customer Care at 1-800-468-1502. Customer Care will make the determination whether the product should be returned to the following address: Honeywell Return Goods, Dock 4 MN10-3860, 1885 Douglas Dr. N., Golden Valley, MN 55422, or whether a replacement product can be sent to you.

Even though I had pressed 1 for English I was connected with an East Indian whom I was barely able to understand. I explained to him that I purchased the thermostat from Menards and I no longer have the receipt. Being that the thermostat is defective I requested that it be replaced. He put me on hold for a long while and when he returned at long last I was informed that a replacement cannot be made unless it is returned to the store with a receipt. This seems contrary to what I read in the manual. But, he insisted that I will not get a replacement any other way.

So, I have decided to purchase an entirely different brand of thermostat and I will never again purchase a Honeywell product. If I could give a negative amount of stars I would.

Man, I hate being cold. Normally I'm calm. This state returned after the very un-characteristic violent moment of punching this nasty thing right off the wall, and since that was insufficient, I also threw it. It broke apart and INSIDE IS A CHEAP CIRCUIT BOARD! This thing is a fake of the original.

Inside is a digital freeze-n-burn type that will make you very uncomfortable. My house is finally warming back up after re-installing the old mercury bubble type thermostat.

The advertising on the package for the new model says +/1 degree, but that is a lie, not unlike the majority of advertisements. It caused the temperatures in my house to rapidly rocket up and down by ELEVEN degrees and that made me sick, because most of that was cold and colder, with only about a minute's worth of heat per half hour.

Electric heat doesn't warm up in one minute, so this device is incompatible at best.

Plus, its designed to break!! Sealed inside is a lithium battery to run the digital fakery, and when that battery goes out, opening the cover causes breakage when attempting to replace that battery. Yes, its battery powered by some sort of quarter size flat disc battery sealed up in there. lol! Just like a disposable flashlight, this is a disposable thermostat.

Honest reviews on Honeywell CT87K The RoundHeat Only Manual Thermostat

Since its introduction in 1953, Honeywell has reportedly sold more than 58 million of these T-86 round thermostats. That's an amazing number. And there's a reason they're so popular: They work, they're simple and they'll last a long time.

In Summer 2007, we had central air installed in our old house and the dealer wanted to put in a programmable digital thermostat. I loathe digital thermostats for a whole host of reasons but in this case, I didn't want a beige, chincey-looking plastic box hanging on the wall in my beautiful upstairs hallway. The dealer brought out a couple of these T-86 thermostats and I opted for the white (as shown here) for a couple reasons.

One, the white casing makes it much less obvious on white walls. That's a plus. The bigger selling point is the size of the numbers on the dial's face. The numerals on this model (YCT87K1003) are dark, large and well-spaced, making it easy to read both room temp and set temp. In an upstairs hallway with minimal overhead lighting, that is very important. In a house where two near-sighted, bespectacled and middle-aged people live, that is very important.

Another plus is that many of these modern T-86 thermostats (unlike prior models) contain no mercury. Another nice feature is the trim ring, which is very forgiving for installing into existing buildings (where cutting into walls is required).

You can probably buy a knock-off product for less, but speaking as someone with a background in architecture, I'd stick with Honeywell. They've been making thermostats since the 1880s when they started with the "Damper Flapper," a primitive switch-type mechanism designed for coal-fired furnaces that used a motor to open and shut the damper.

In my downstairs foyer, I have one of the 1930s Honeywell Thermostats, complete with its solid brass housing and the words "Minneapolis-Honeywell" on its front. More than 70 years old and it's still a dandy!

I highly recommend this contemporary T-86 Honeywell Round. It's been an industry standard for more than five decades. And the best news? The most recent information I could find shows that this product is "Made in America".

I have a very old Warm Morning wall furnace that my grandfather put in the house nearly 50 years ago.

I needed a new thermostadt because with the one that had been installed by a local repair man was way off on the settings.

You could set that thermostadt on 68 degrees and the furnace would not shut off till it hit 75 degrees or come back on till it dropped down to 68. I put up with that for several years and finally had enough of that.

I knew what I needed and instead of calling another repairman who was half the age of the furnace I started looking for what I knew to be realiable and that was the Honeywell heat only thermostadt.

No one had it for heat only but Amazon.com had it for $29.00 plus free shipping.

I placed the order and had the thermostadt in a few days and put it on. They are a little different than the old ones but the results are the same.

You can set this one on 70 degrees and when it hits that point the furnace shuts off. It will drop 2 degrees to 68 and come back on and that's perfect. My old house is so much more comfortable now and I'm saving money to boot.

If you need a single purpose thermostadt for an old furnace this is the one to buy. Skip the rest and buy the best for less than 30 bucks.

This was my initial review posted on a deal site where i learned about this heater.

Consider this the good.

Been running the Lifesmart Infrared heater for the last 4 days and i think its a keeper.

We lowered our downstairs thermostat to 60 and cranked up the Lifesmart on high. It took several hours before the thermostat was satisfied when set to 68 degrees.

Once it cycled off and on a couple times, i tried raising the thermostat to 72. It never shut off. Looks like 66-68 is going to be the sweet spot if we dont want it running continuously.

I have it in a room that measures 13'x27' with 8' ceilings. We put up sheets to block double wide openings into adjacent rooms.

We put a temp gauge on the shelf and it does read around 68-70 degrees when the unit cycles off.

So is this thing going to heat a 1,000 to 1,500 sq. ft. area? I really doubt it, but it does a decent job of heating the room i purchased it for. It even has an off/on timer which we used both to turn the unit on in the morning an hour before we get up and then we also used it to shut off 2 hours after leaving the house just in case our guest forgets to turn it off.

The fan may be a little noisy for some, but we couldn't hear it with the TV going so its not a big deal.

You can feel the warm air coming out of it from about 4' away, but beyond that its not directly noticeable.

I haven't had the chance to hook up my Kill-A-Watt meter yet, but hope to do so this week.

Remote control works well and all functions are accessible through it.

The power cord does get a little warm to the touch. The manual does say that it must be plugged into an outlet rated at 15 Amps or more and that nothing else be allowed to run on that circuit.

If you do the math, 1500 Watts at 120 volts = 12.5 Amps. So i wont be running the microwave, TV or any other such appliance at the same time. Luckily we have a couple circuits in the living room area, so it hasnt been an issue for us.

So the jury is still out on the added electricity cost, but if the claims of a dollar a day hold true, hopefully itll save us some money on our oil bill. The manual bases that claim on operating it for 8 hours out of the day. Based on our KWH rate of 8.265, our cost to operate comes out to about .99 cents pr/day.

Ill be anxious to hook up the Kill-A-Watt and see what it says and also to have a look at our first electric bill.

The Bad and the Ugly:

Just short of 3 weeks of use, we got 2 E1 errors within 2 days of each other. Had to unplug the unit and plug right back in. We were able to continue using it after.

I knew about these E1 errors after reading some reviews here and was hoping it wouldnt happen to me. I decided to buy it anyways hoping Lifesmart had resolved the issue.

A couple days later the unit started shutting off completely with no error code. After letting it sit for a while, the power light would come back on. If we tried unplugging and replugging right away, it would not come back on and no lights appeared on the unit.

With just 2 days left on the return policy, it got sent back yesterday.

I emailed Lifesmart twice about the issue and after several days wait got a response suggesting it was an overheat issue and that i needed to make sure there was a minimum of 2-3 ft clearance behind the unit, that it wasnt plugged into a circuit with other high draw devices, that it wasnt on a GFCI outlet and that we weren't using an extension cord. None of this applied to us except for the fact that there are 2 lamps on the same circuit. As mentioned before i measured the Lifesmart heater drawing 12.5 Amps at its highest setting, so that leaves a little room for some low current devices like the lamps.

After waiting several more days when i inquired about shipping costs to send it back to them for repair, they said that they would ship me the parts and i could install them myself! I have no problem doing this, but found it highly unusual that they would suggest something like this on a unit thats still under warranty.

I got this email on my way to ship the unit back to the retailer i bought it from.

Last weekend i went out and bought 2 different inexpensive Fan Heaters that both have a 1500 watt setting. Both did about the same as the Lifesmart heater in keeping the room described above at around 66-68 degrees. The one cheaper fan was purchased for $16 and doesnt have the bells and whistles that the Lifesmart has, but it cost a whole lot less. The 2nd one costs $35 and does have a shut off timer feature, but no start up timer (which i miss). Both have the auto shut off tip feature.

Our electric bill did go up some in the 3 weeks we ran the lifesmart and i dont expect that using either of these less expensive heaters will change the electricity usage much. I put my Kill-A-Watt meter on both of the cheaper units and they both draw about the same wattage and current as the lifesmart.

The Lifesmart ran pretty much continuously unless i had it set to 66 degrees. It would then cycle off occasionally. As i have read elsewhere and in some recent deal forum discussions, is that 1500 watts is 1500 watts no matter how you slice it. The lifesmart is no more efficient than either of these 2 fan heaters i bought. The only thing these Amish style Infrared heaters have going for them is looks and the possible inclusion of an timer to turn the unit on at a specified time.

I was interested in these types of heaters but after reading some of the reviews I was unsure. I decided to try it after a friend told me they had one and loved it. I live in NH and bought this to help heat my 500sq ft mobile home....well I am pleased to say that it has been heating my home all by itself, I have it set on low and on 68* and it keeps the whole place at that temp( I also run a fan to circulate the air)....its been in the low 20's and its done great! My propane furnace hasn't run once since I got this heater which is great at 3.40 a gallon for propane! I haven't gotten the 1st electricity bill yet, but I have figured out on low it uses 1000 watts an hour which is 1 kilo watt an hour and at .16 cents a kilo watt/hr thats $3.85 a day if it ran constantly which it does not, it cycles on and off so my bill shouldn't be that bad compared to propane costs....we will see. I recommend this heater to anyone looking to supplement their heating bill...its been doing a great job for me!

The LS1500-6 is bulkier and very noisy compared to the LS1500-4. We have both, and even though the LS1500-6 looks nicer, it's not worth dealing with the extra noise. Also, in terms of heating capability both models seemed about the same to us. The LS1500-6 failed on us after only 2 weeks of use, and vminnovations wanted us to pay forty bucks to ship it back to them for a replacement, plus shipping costs for the new unit ridiculous. We should have dealt directly with amazon since they have a better return policy for dealing with defective merchandise.

Excellent heater, and I would highly recommend to others.

Because the price of propane has gone up exponentially, I decided it was time to do some zone heating. I live in a 2200 sq foot house with myself and my dog... no reason to heat the whole house when we spend 99% of the time in 3 rooms. I turned down the main furnace by about 12 degrees. I bought a couple of other heaters which work well in smaller rooms, but my kitchen/family room area is about 650sq ft, and in order to heat them up, I had to have two space heaters running. This one heats the room up in about an hour (72 degrees) on high, and then will maintain that temp on the low setting.

The one feature I love is the timer. Just before going to bed, I turn the unit off and set the timer to 7 hours. The heater turns on about one hour before I get up and voila, no more freezing in the morning while I wait for the room to warm up.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that it is noisier than I expected. But I can live it, and just don't put it next to me.

Bought this unit at Christmas and finally installed it today March 30, 2012. I was very disappointed in the flame. The flame is only one color, light yellow, which makes it look very fake and faint. If you have the light on or it is daytime you can barely see the flame and my bathroom is very dark because my skylight isn't installed yet. I am sure once the skylight is installed I won't be able to see the flame during the daytime. I also thought the sand was movable and replaceable but it appears to be fixed and sealed in place. I didn't like the pattern of the sand and wanted to rearrange it but I guess I will have to live with it the way it is. Another design flaw is that the model and general information of the unit is printed in white on the black metal on the right side of the fireplace where the manual controls are located. It looks ghastly. We have a mirror on the wall which is perpendicular to the wall the fireplace is on and it shows the reflection of all the writing in the mirror. We are going to buy a piece of sheet metal to cover it up. I am sure they could of printed that information somewhere else on the unit. I do like the modern look of the fireplace and it does look nice installed in the wall and does put out some heat however, not as much heat as I expected from reading the specifications. It is spring here in California and I wonder if it will put out enough heat in the winter time. I bought this because I had heard that the flames looked very realistic and the videos I watched of other Dimplex fireplaces showed at least 2 colors in the flame. Trust me the flame in this fireplace has only one color and they must be adding colors to the pictures. I wished I could of seen the fireplace before I bought it but couldn't find it anywhere. I would not of bought this fireplace if I had seen the poor quality of flame color.

Update

My husband put a black metal plate over the model information and it looks a lot better now.

This was the 2nd Dimplex electric fireplace that I ordered from Amazon. Unfortunately it too was a disappointment. Again, the flame isn't coming from sand, but instead an odd looking fabric that did not look appealing. My biggest complaint though was that Dimplex does not stress that this fireplace really needs " In Wall" mounting, not just "on "the wall. It has a large profile that if not mounted "in the wall" is just too big and awkward looking "on" the wall. It sticks out quite a bit and just couldnt be integrated nicely onto the wall without looking like the pink elephant in the room. Had I been willing to cut through drywall and install, I am certain it would have been pretty. I returned this fireplace unfortunately. On a more positive note, Amazon makes returns so incredibly easy that one should atleast order the fireplace and see if it works for them, if not, the return process is painless.

This portable space heater by Lasko helps to cut my electric bill. At first I wasn't sure if should get this or a space heater that works with oil inside of it; but I'm glad I got this one instead. It couldn't be easier to set up--just take it out of the box and plug it in! Although you should read the four pages of instructions in order to be familiar with general precautions and to know how to use the timer feature and a couple other extra features, it amazed me just how intuitive it is to get this thing up and running.

In addition, it's easy to lift--it's very lightweight, especially after you remove it from the box; and there's a neat timer function so that you can "program" this to turn off at a set time up to 8 hours in advance. Great! The machine also turns on or off automatically depending on how close it is to making your room the exact temperature you specify by pressing the plus and minus buttons to set temperature.

After you turn it on, be aware that within 20 to 30 seconds you're going to feel the heat begin to blast upward from this unit, so don't get too close to the top of it after you turn it on. Another cautionary note, at least according to the instructions, is that the device can possibly leave a permanent stain on hardwood or similar floors. If this is a concern for you, keep looking for another portable space heater. My carpeting is practically industrial strength and I have plenty of extra pieces of the carpeting in one of my closets so I personally am not too concerned about any staining that may or may not result from my using this heater.

Overall, this is a great little heater that pleasantly surprised me when I realized just how powerful it really is. Although it's not for everybody (i.e., people with hardwood floors may want to stay away) it suits me fine and I recommend it for heating rooms up to roughly 300 square feet especially when the floors are not hardwood.

This space heater is super quiet and easy to use. It heats up instantly. The only negative thing I have is that sometimes, the heater will stay on even though the temp displayed is five or more degrees higher than the set temp.

Honest reviews on Lasko Silent Room Heater Model # 5620

Nice floor level space heater that literally makes no noise. It does take a little bit to warm up a decent sized room, but what I like is there is no noise. Convenient remote control, digital temperature read out, takes up very little space. Would recommend to assist central heat. I would not count on this unit to heat a home. Would purchase again, acutally I did. I bought a second one for grandma's kitchen...

After trying a stand up convection heater which took 7-9 hours to heat up our living, dining and kitchen rooms (about 400 sq feet of a 900 sq. ft apt.), we decided to try another type of heater. This heater is the best for this purpose. We do close off the bedrooms and bathrooms but this heater only takes two to three hours to heat up our living room, dining room and kitchen areas. We live in san diego and it is usually about 62 degrees in the mornings here. We warm the apt to about 71-72 degrees. I think that it would warm faster if we had decent insulation in the building and better insulated windows (Including a sliding glass door) but it is an apt so we cant change that. The apt was built in the 60's and management won't go for upgrading anything. What I am saying is if you have a better insulated house or apt you prob don't need to section off rooms by closing doors and it will prob even heat up faster. I would def. recommend this heater for heating a apt. I love it. It does have a countdown timer built into itself that will turn it off after 1-8 hours, but not one that will turn it on at a certain hour of the early morning. It also won't work with a timer plug to turn it on at early hours of the morning either because of the built in timer interferes with this function. Buy it. You will be happy if you have been trying to find some alternative to decently heat your apt.

Big improvement over the Trudeau model 0823004 3-in-1 for just a few bucks more. This model has a much greater and more practical capacity. The capacity of the 0823004 was essentially fondue for two and not for 4 or 6. The fork guide on the 0823004 fit only the metal pot and not the cheese/chocolate pot. In this model it fits both. As with the 0823004 and unlike most other electric pots, the break-away power cord doesn't fall off if you look at it crooked. This is a really nice item. The handles on the metal pot make for easy preheating on the stove. Perhaps most of all, I love not having to mess with Sterno anymore.

This item is WONDERFUL for chocolate fondue !! We previously attempted to use the gel/ Sterno type fondue sets which were extremely difficult to control the level of heat. This set works great w/ chocolate IF you place the heat setting on a very low set point. We started by placing hot water in the water pan (only need to place in 1/4 of pan)& pre melt chocolate in mircowave to soften before placing in stoneware pan. We did a 3 hour dipping event and did not have replenish the water in the pan at all! We got to enjoy the event vs. using the other type fondue sets; NO need to keep lighting and snuffing out the gel heat pots & dealing w/ steam escaping from the set !!!

I strongly suggest if you are new at fondue or use of the electric method, "experiment" with this item before your event. Beside burning off the the acrid odor (make sure you read instructions and I recommend the initial "burn-off" be done under a kitchen exhaust hood) you'll eliminate any potential "hick-ups" if you're having a group over. ENJOY !

After researching a LOT of electric fondue pots, decided on this one, & it arrived this past week. Visually I at first thought it looked a bit small, but it was the perfect size for the homemade "Swiss Fondue" I made last night for the two of us. But while I can see this being used for a group of 4, or perhaps as part of a buffet, I think 6 people trying to dine at once from it would be pushing the limit (six color-coded stainless-steel fondue forks are included). Everything in this set is well-made; the base, stainless pot, & crock insert are solid with nice heft.

As per instructions, I made my cheese fondue in a separate pot on my range top, & then transferred it to the ceramic crock insert. Added an inch or 2 of water in the stainless pot (which you use by itself without the crock insert for oil or broth fondues), situated the crock insert inside, & switched on the heat. It was SO nice not to have to fiddle with sterno, & even though there's no numeration or "high-low" markings on the dial, it was very easy to simply raise or lower the heat accordingly. My fondue remained creamy smooth with no breaking/separating, as well as at perfect dining temperature with absolutely ZERO bottom scorching. Hand-washing is recommended, but wasn't an ordeal.

What a delight this appliance is!! I see many lovely fondue concoctions in our immediate future.

Honest reviews on Trudeau Alto 3 In 1 Electric Fondue Set, 11-Piece Set

Reading all the positive reviews for this product, I'm pretty bummed that I seem to have gotten a lemon. The stoneware insert on the pot I received cracked (practically exploded) the first time we used it, (and yes, we followed the instruction manual.) I'd advise anyone buying one of these to exercise some extra caution the first couple uses to make sure you got one of the good ones, and not one of the explodey-ceramic-bits ones.

Props to Amazon Customer Support for handling the return so smoothly, though.

Got this as a wedding gift and WE LOVE IT. We have tried several different styles over the years, but after seeing this one on the America's Test Kitchen we wanted one! We have used it a lot and it always comes out perfect. I was badly burned by an old one we had and my husband always complained about how another we used was awkward to use in preparing the fondue, but this one IS GREAT!
