I recently got into BBQ smoking and realized pretty quickly that I needed a thermometer. The thermometer that came stock with my smoker turned out to be off by at least 100 degrees. An oven thermometer did the trick at first, but I found that I was opening the smoker way too often to check the temp resulting in heat loss. At the end of a smoke, I was also opening it way too often to check meat temperature. This product not only allowed me to keep track of both, but also let me keep track of it from inside the house! Since the weather is getting colder out, this is a definite plus.

The first thing I did was check the accuracy. I put both of the probes in a pan of water and brought it to a rapid boil. One probe read 212, and the other 213, one degree off. Next I put both in a large glass of water and ice. Both were showing 32 degrees between the ice and water. The tests turned out far better than I had expected.

So far I have used this for three 12-14 hour smokes, and at least 2 6 hour smokes and the batteries are still good. The probes clean easily, and I have had no significant problems.

One thing I noticed is that one of the probes sees to have a bit of melted rubber protruding between the grill temp probe and the connected wire. Since I have never had either probe about 255 degrees, I find that a bit troubling. Not sure I want to use it for a direct grilling application where the temps can go over 400 easily.

I have not had a chance to see how the outside unit handles rain.

All in all, I would not think twice of buying another one of these if I had a need.

The E-72 is a nice unit for people using a smoker, since you need to monitor the smoker temp and the meat, but this model has a few odd things you need to be aware of. It's range can be very short. It says 100feet, but that is in an open field with no obstructions. If you are going through a wall from outside to inside, expect to get about 20 feet.

Also the on/off switch for the transmitter is inside the battery case. Very odd design.

Maverick just came out with a new model (the ET-372) that corrects these problems. As of this review, it's not sold on Amazon, but keep watching it's worth getting the new one.

I've been using this produce with my Weber smoker for six months now, and it is the most important tool that I have. I've found it to be accurate within a few degrees (on the food side) of my instant read thermometers and by not having to open the lid to check temperatures I don't have to deal with the heat you lose doing that. Even though the remote unit is plastic, hanging it on the outside of the smoker works perfectly well. Setup took a bit of time the first few tries, then I found it to be straight forward. I only have two issues. First, having to open up the unit to turn it on is a minor hassle (it isn't that big of a deal, just a minor inconvenience). The other issue had nothing to do with using it with my smoker I used it in my gas barbecue and had a major flareup (wasn't paying close attention) and that shorted the food probe WHICH they mention may happen. I'm getting the high-temp food probe from them (wish it had been included in the first place). For my smoker, it worked perfectly fine. I recommend this unit to everyone.

Honest reviews on Maverick Remote Smoker Dual Probe Wireless Thermometer ET-73

The first time I used this dual thermometer I loved it! I smoked a pork shoulder in the green egg over night and felt safe everything was ok because I had this unit on my bedside table as I slept, and I could check the temperature of the smoker and the meat at any time. About the third time I used it the thermometer was showing an extremely high temperature and would not change. I read that this could happen so I bought a new probe and it is still broken. What seemed to be the perfect thermometer is useless. I give it one star because I've already received the new probe and that did nothing to help.

My family makes hundreds of pounds of kielbasa and other smoked sausages every fall. This Maverick remote dual probe thermometer makes life so much easier. We can monitor the temperature of the meat as well as the air in the smoker without ever having to walk down to the smoker. We know as soon as we need to add more wood or as soon as the product is ready to be removed. It saves so much wasted time checking temps every 30 or so minutes.

Review of Honeywell HM512VPIAQ TrueSteam Humidifier - 12 Gallon

Honeywell HM512VPIAQ TrueSteam Humidifier - 12 Gallon
Customer Ratings: 2 stars

Here's the deal. This product is basically a bucket with a huge electrode in the middle of it. The system fills the bucket with water and turns on the electrode. This creates steam which is pumped into the air ducts. Other humidifiers work by passing air over a water soaked filter. The idea of not having to deal with a nasty filter but rather having steam injected into the air flow is amazing. Because this unit basically boils the water, it leaves behind all of the calcium and lime in the tank. It does try to flush the tank every so often to get rid of it but as we all know, hard water builds up on everything. Unless you have VERY soft water the system will eventually need a cleaning. When you follow the instructions you have do due a hard water test and then buy a filter product. The product comes with a hard water test kit that you use to tell how hard your water is. There are 3 levels and at each level Honeywell recommends a product to reduce the water hardness. I am telling you, you need a method to get rid of the calcium or lime in your water or this product will not work. As with everything, people try to do it as cheaply as possible and not buy a filter. Then the system doesn't work, even though Honeywell told you want you need and people complain that this is junk. The $250 item the other reviewer is talking about is a reverse osmosis kit that removes all the calcium and lime from the water. Sure it sucks to have to buy another item but you'll need one for other products as well, unless you like chipping away the build up every so often. The part number you need is Honeywell 50045947-001. If you have really bad water pressure get 50045947-002 which comes with a pump. 50045947-001 runs about $178.

With that said, Honeywell advertises this as being able to be installed in 5 minutes. That is only true if you have: 1. a drain nearby, a dedicated 15 AMP circuit (this product draws 12 amps), and a water source. You also need spot on your HVAC outflow duct large enough to mount this on. I didn't have a dedicated 15 AMP line in so I put one in easy enough but if you aren't good with electrical you'll have to hire someone to put a line in. This comes with a saddle value which allows you to tap onto an existing water pipe without having to call a plumber. It worked great. You can use this with any humidistat or thermostat that has a humidity control. I have the Honeywell Prestige thermostat and wanted to connect this to the system wirelessly. To do that I had to buy an additional Honeywell wireless adapter. The wireless adapter made it easy though. Connect A to A, B to B, C to C, D to D and you're done. All in all my complete install was about $800-$900 (including reverse osmosis filter). Is that a lot of money? I guess, but I like the best.

So if you want to be successful make sure you buy the Honeywell reverse osmosis system or you'll be sorry. Installers, quit selling this to people without also selling the reverse osmosis system.

What a frustrating expensive disappointment this humidifier has been.My wife wanted more humidity in our home. Pretty dry out here in the desert southwest. We had this unit professionally installed in our 7 year old home. We have two split HVAC systems in our 3000 sq foot home. We live in Western AZ. It was installed in one of the air handlers. We have a soft water conditioner and the recommended water filter in the system. We had some initial issues with a defective pump assembly and erroneous error codes that were due to a bad water sensor. Once those items were corrected, it worked great for about two months. Then we would get air flow, but no humidity change, or it wouldn't come on at all. The HVAC company has installed complete system installations for us on a few homes we had built over the last several years. They have a good reputation in this town and know what they are doing. We have had at least 12 service visits since it was installed in January of 2012. Our air handlers are installed in our attics, which is typical for this area, but makes reading the service lights and doing repairs a real pain in the rear and costly. Our HVAC contractor now wants to refund all of our money and remove the system. They too, have had enough with this unreliable system. They have a few others installed in town that are causing them issues.Tech support with Honeywell is pretty good for the Techs, but the homeowner support phone number is in India and their service,in my opinion is poor, very poor. I am retired now, but I have HVAC experience. You can press one for English, but that won't get you anyone that speaks it very well. When I asked to speak to someone at Honeywell in the U.S., I never received a return call back as promised. Buy a portable humidifier, you will be happier with it and save a lot of money.

Update: The humidifier system was removed on 03/11/13 at the request of the contractor and we received a full refund.

Honeywell HM506H8908 Truesteam Humidifier, 6-GallonIt sounded so good. Bought online and installed it myself and my HVAC friend set up the wiring into my system. Worked OK a few months, but added about $100.00 a month to my electric bill. Then, the little red trouble lights started blinking, so I cleaned it repeatedly and replaced parts, but a day or two later the defect light was blinking again. Got a new one on warranty and it did not last any longer. The new manual, when the red light flashes, says just call your installer for a service call!!!! Ripped it all out and into trash.

Honest reviews on Honeywell HM512VPIAQ TrueSteam Humidifier - 12 Gallon

I have a TrueSteam humidifire. Half of the parts are replaced at least once. It has cost me way more than its price to maintain it, not considering all the time I put into it, all the nights I wend down to the furnace room to reset it, and days off work to be home to open the door for my tech guy. Don't be deceived by the 5 year warranty, it is just a gimmick to lure you in. Once you're hooked you have implicitly accepted paying Honeywell hundreds of dollars without having a choice. Consider buying a unit which is more expensive and have it properly installed. Just think about it, if you buy a decent humidifier twice as expensive and it works for you for ten years you have saved yourself at least $500 because with Honeywell you must buy at least three units to get through 10 years of service, let alone your time to baby sit them.

Do not buy. I have four of these units; two in my home and two in my parents' home. They are very poorly designed and I strongly recommend you avoid them. In the two years I have had them, I have had the following problems:

1) Three water overflow sensor errors. Even though these can be removed and cleaned, in each case the fault would recur despite their relatively short life span and no obvious visual sign of wear. I ended up purchasing new sensors for all three. (About $90 each as I recall). Oh, and Honeywell won't talk to you or let you order parts if you are not a HVAC professional. The result of this silly policy is that people end up going to internet supply houses and buying parts that they might not need because Honeywell won't help with diagnosis of problems.

2) These get very hot when working. You need rubber drain hoses or hi-temp PVC. Both of my resevoirs have discolored and on occasion, water boils up through the top vents. and down the face of the unit. Frankly, they are a little scary and had I known how hot they would get, I probably would not have bought a plastic unit. I can't really blame Honeywell for that (it is supposed to make steam after all).

3) The automoatic drain cycles are almost useless and you can plan on cleaning these a couple of times a season or the heating element and the water resevoir where the overflow sensor sits will start to build up with scale and you will start getting error messages (blinking lights). Over the summer, fill the tank with a mix of CLR and water and leave it unplugged. After a few weeks, all the crud and scale will dissolve.

4) Two of the four units leak from the bottowm of the water resevoir near the resevoir retaining and drain stem. I've disassembled the valve assemblies (clean and lube), but there are no washers -if you want to fix the leak, pull out your wallet and buy a new internal stem. I just keep a bucket underneath them for now because I plan on replacing all four units at the end of this season.

All in all, good concept, bad execution.

Got this to use in my office during the winter. The 1 touch button is completely annoying because you have to push it repeatedly to get what you want. And the thermostat settings do not work at all and the heater remains off when in the thermostat settings. This is frustrating because even the LO setting is to warm so I want it to just detect when to turn on and off automatically rather than me wasting time and constantly turning it on and off automatically. I am going to return this product ASAP and get a space heater with dual knobs.

Holmes HFH-5656-U Power Heater Fan I purchased this heater to help keep our tent warm during a weekend campout, where the overnight temperature was to be below 20 degrees. I used it for a 3-man tent and it provided outstanding performance. The tent stayed warm throughout the night.

Honest reviews on Holmes HFH-5656-U Power Heater Fan

I bought this one a long time ago. Maybe there are better heaters out there but this one does the job, and it does not get so hot that you end up burning yourself when you touch it, yet it heats a small room fine. Here are the pluses and minuses:

Positives:

+ Reasonably priced

+ Can keep a bedroom plenty hot

+ The exhaust grill stays cool. I feel safe with it around my 3 year old, and felt safe with it around him when he was 2 (even let him play with it)

Negatives:

The one-button interface is a bit irritating. You need to push it a bunch of times to hit the temperature you need.

The thermostat is not very accurate, it's probably off by as much as ten degrees. I keep it on "80", when I really want 70. Sometimes when I want it hotter, I put it on "High", but that means that it stays on and never shuts off, and I end up overheated. I wish it had a setting for "90", so that I could get it to heat the room to 75.

I will probably buy a second unit, and would not feel bad recommending this to someone else. I bought several other space heaters that were more expensive, cheaper, more feature rich, etc., and ended up returning them in frustration because they all shared the common problem of burning whoever touched the grill. Having gone through so many others looking for a replacement, I have a greater appreciation for this little guy.

It was simple to replace my old thermostat with this one, it couldn't be easier and it only took 5 minutes. Compared to the other thermostats I researched, this one offers quality for a very low price.

I installed two of these in my house without problems in less than 2 hours. they're easy to setup and program. They also are less likely to break after a year because they're not touchscreen. the touchscreen ones often have to be replaced every year or so.

I purchased this thermostat to replace an old manual unit. I also liked the fact that it displayed both the room temperature and the set temperature. I used it for a year, and noticed as soon as I installed it that it was reading a temperature about 2 degrees higher that my what it actually was in the house. Additionally, it seemed to take forever for the temperature to drop or raise by as little as one degree. I exchanged it for the same unit, and had the same issues. I know that the temperature inaccuracy is not huge, but I am fickle, and a thermostat only has to do one job well, and this one could not do it accurately. I replaced it with the Lux TX9000TS and am much happier overall. Additionally, the Lux has a light button, so I can activate the backlight without pushing another button.

This thermostat is easy to install. It comes with wire labels for the wires on your existing thermostat. These match nicely to the new one with some cross referencing. My system is a heat pump with auxillery heat. It took 30 minutes to install. I could do it again in 15 minutes. You get an installation guide, operating manual, and a miniature CD guide. Programming was easy too but it was pre-programmed almost to the settings I ended up choosing anyway. *One concern may be for people with existing wires labeled Y1, W1, W2, V, or VR. The manual says to contact an expert if you have these wires. I had no problem. You can check for these wires by pulling your existing thermostat straight off its base and looking at the terminal labels (pull circuit breaker first). Good luck.

Honest reviews on Honeywell Vision Conventional 5-1-1-Day Programmable Thermostat

I installed two of these in my house. It was surprisingly easy, as the instructions were very well done. Programming is straightforward, but maybe a bit tedious (fortunately it shouldn't need to be done very often). It's nice going to bed and having the heat turn down overnight and then have the house nice and warm again when you get up in the morning. Highly recommended even for those less than handy.

In general I'm happy with this thermostat. It's easy to set up and has a good size display. I like that it's backlit, so easy to adjust in a dark room. The one issue I have with this model has to do with a feature that's not there, but was in the Lux thermostat that I replaced. It does not show filter usage, i.e., how many hours my furnace has run since I last changed the filter.

Have had this for 24hrs and we already love it! We bought it for use in our nursery because the temp is difficult to maintain during the winter. We set it at 75 degrees and during the night both of our thermostats in his room (one on floor and one on top of shelf) were within 3 degrees of each other, which tells us it does regulate the temp VERY well. Our only issue is every time you touch a button it has a high pitched beep which could disturb our sleeping baby. But since you don't have to touch it after you set it to auto, we don't foresee this being a major issue.

Intermatic FF12HHC 12-Hour Spring Loaded Wall Timer, Brushed Metal

This was our seventh Intermatic spring-loaded timer 6 on fans and one on a heat lamp. They all seem to be about the same quality. They are now made in Tunisia. Intermatic makes timers with mini-cover plates, which fit in single or multi-gang electric boxes. This model is designed to fit only a single gang box, since it includes a full single-gang cover plate.

The electric box this device is to be installed in needs to be at least 2.5" deep; and deeper is better. This is because the device is nearly 2" deep and you'll need room for the house wiring. The timer fits snugly (height / width) in a steel electric box, so there's no room for wires on the side. This timer is for single-pole installations only. It won't work to replace a 3-way switch, such as found at the top & bottom of a staircase.

Although the product title says brushed metal, the cover plate is metallic-colored plastic.

These are NOT totally silent timers. I took the timer mechanism out of its Bakelite case once they are 100% mechanical, similar to a wind-up alarm clock. Listen carefully and you can hear the timer gears whirring and clicking. That's fine if it controls a fan that itself makes some sound, but if it's for a light in a quiet room, the timer sound is more obvious. Also, when it shuts off, there's an audible snap. I wouldn't recommend any wind-up timer for a bedroom where you're trying to sleep. For a silent timer, consider a product such as the Woods 59014 Decora Style 12-8-4-2 Hour Preset Wall Switch Timer, White, 12-Hour

This timer has no external installation wires. To connect it electrically, remove ½" of insulation from the house wiring; tighten the hot lead under the bottom connector and the lamp or fan wire under the top connector. (Reversing these two wires on the timer works and is perfectly safe, although the National Electric Code says to put hot wires on the lug where the switch says it belongs.)

If your timer doesn't behave as described below, return it immediately for a refund or replacement. All seven of our timers work as they should -i.e., turn the knob:

clockwise to turn the power on to a set time (you're supposed to turn past 2, then set it)

counter-clockwise to reduce the time remaining

fully counter-clockwise to turn power off

If the knob should ever crack, call Intermatic and ask for a replacement. They'll probably send you one for free...

Only two compaints I have about this waffle iron... 1) If you overfill you end up with a very hard to clean mess. and 2) First batch of waffles always comes out great but subsequent waffles don't come out as brown.. I found that after making your first batch of waffles, if you turn the temp up until the green light goes out, then wait until you hear the alarm, turn it back down to where you had it then pour your waffle batter in it's fine. Not sure if there is something wrong with the thermostat in mine or they all work that way.

This one is for when a pair of Belgian waffles will do and you have very limited appliance storage space. It works great with precise temperature control and it even beeps when the waffle is done. If you've made your batter right, you can't make a bad waffle with this iron. Another plus is its "retro" styling. It's very pleasing to the eye. It's a Cuisinart !

We were so glad to finally see a small waffle maker great for small families. We had perfect waffles the very first time! We tried different heat settings and found that "almost 4" was best. We made the "waffle mix" recipe that came with the iron so quick and easy to have totally made from scratch waffles. This iron is easy to store (stands on it's side) and to clean. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the metal sides of the handle can get very hot to the touch, so one must use caution when opening the iron while it is hot. But, it nonetheless a very good waffle maker and I recommend it.

Customer Ratings: 2.5 stars

I bought one of these because of the lid and the controllable temperature; and, the 5-star review. Don't know what the 5-star person received but the first unit arrived and I couldn't get the cord to stay attached to the fryer. It is a clever(?)design meant to easily pull away from the pot if someone should trip over the cord thereby avoiding spilling the pot. Apparently, the cord is supposed to be held by a weak magnet with it's shallow electrical sockets engaging short electrical pins sticking out of the fryer. Problem is that the magnet is so weak that it cannot support the weight of a few inches of the cord hanging out in the air. In other words, when you let go of the magnetic plug, the weight of the cord pulls the plug away from the fryer.

So, I returned the first one, thinking that maybe it was a bad magnet and Amazon had me a new one by the next business day (good old Amazon!)

Fryer #2 arrived and I eagerly took it from the box expecting to have the new cord work like a charm. Nope. Same problem. Not to be defeated by some dopey designer, I duct taped the cord to the side of the unit and fired it up. The temperature selection knob seemed a little vague/loose as I rotated it to 350F. It got only warm. After an hour, my laser thermometer said that it was only 115F in the pot. Heck, it would have reached 115F if I had just put it outside in the Texas sun.

Went to the adjustment knob to see what might be the problem and upon turning it back and forth a few times it losened up and would now rotate 360 degrees. Broken without ever getting hot. This one went back too but I learned my lesson and took money back instead of a 3rd attempt. Sheesh.

I ordered this little fryer because I had a craving for Lumpia but usually stay away from most fried stuff. So my needs where minimal. I like the compact side and the temperature control. But as someone else stated theirs arrived broken, and so did mine, it doesn't turn off. Not a deal breaker as yanking the cord does a good job of that. The short cords magnet stays on well and hasn't been an issue and it heat up quick.

If you fry a lot this might be to lightly built for you, but it gets used at my place about once a month to prepare side items, so it works out well.

Good light duty fryer, for a cheap price. Anyone using it regularly would want something more substantial.

I fried 3 in the fryer the other 15 in a skillet. It simply did not get hot enough for anything and I had it turned as high as it would go. I didn't have any problem with the cord just with the heat issue.

Bought this thing then saw the negative reviews. Braced myself for a disaster but so far it's working fine. Unlike some others, I had no problem securely connecting the power cord. The unit's not super powerful, so it takes a while for it to reach 375 degrees. However, it reaches 350 degrees very quickly. The lid is also nice to have. The unit looks cheap but seems to perform as promised. We'll see how long it lasts.
