The cost of a new hot water heater is outragous and the cost of a replacement gas valve seemed too high but we simply got tired of resetting the eletronic gas valve. So far the new valve has worked flawlessly but time will tell. The valve was the least expensive through Amazon.

As for my review:

My heat system is a heat pump system from the 80's add it was time to update the thermostat so i got on of these, it took me no more than 12 minutes to change the Thermostat. The little instruction stickers this one comes with are clear and easy to follow. . And the "alternative wiring" chart is really helpful since some of the wire names have changed but their function hasn't.

It is worth mentioning that there are default programming settings, based on Energy Star recommendations. I'm sure the summer settings would save energy, but they would not make for the house being very livable for us, as we prefer a summer temperature in the 70s, not 80s. I'll try the heating settings come winter, as they may be more realistic.

Once installed and working, the thermostat has a feature that ensures it reaches the right temperatures *at* the times I specified. It got it wrong the first day (it was a little warm when we came home), but by the second day it had adjusted itself to the conditions of our house, and now the temperature is very reliable, and very constant (does not swing at all). The thermostat does an EXCELLENT job of regulating temperature.

The touchscreen is crisp and responsive. I agree with other reviewers that the backlight needs to be activated by a touch anywhere on the screen, and not just on a button. (Doing so requires you to undo whatever your touch did.) Still, there really isn't much need to play with it once you've got it programmed.

On the whole it's a good unit. Honeywell's been in this business for a long time.

Where this thermostat shines is its accuracy; it will hover more tightly around a given temperature. Example: say you set the A/C to 76 degrees. My old thermostat would let it warm up to 77, then cool it down to 75. Not this one. It keeps it on 76.

It has one cool feature that many other thermostats lack: If you have the A/C on at night and a front comes through and the temperature in the house drops SEVERAL degrees lower than your pre-set temperature, this thermostat will fire up the furnace to keep you from waking up too cold. This is a separate setting, and you have to search for it in the manual, but it's there and it works.

The touch screen is decently sensitive and quick to take a setting change. As one other reviewer pointed out, it will light up when you touch it, but only if you touch it in the right spots (as opposed to anywhere on the screen).

4 stars and not 5 (2 reasons):

1) The user interface is a bit '90s/primitive, but definitely usable. But I'm a tech-type so I can deal with it, but this thing still confuses other users in the house.

2) It's a little too smart for it's own good: If I program my A/C to 70-degrees at 10:30PM, it's because I want to have the house warmer right up until 10:29 and 59 seconds. Well, this thermostat figures out how long it takes your house to cool (say 2 hours), and then it begins at 8:30PM trying to cool your house to 70 (so that the house temp. is 70 by 10:30 PM). That's not such a subtle difference. It means the A/C's cranking, freezing me out, 2 hours earlier than I'm ready for it. Maybe there's an override for this, but I haven't dug out the manual to research it yet. Workaround: Set it to 70 for a later time.

The only installation issue was finding a short piece of wire to jumper the 'AUX' & 'E' terminal together and some start-up aggravation. I would look at my existing thermostat wiring and prepare better if I had to do it again. "The clarity of hindsight is blinding"

When I first tried to program it, it would keep going on and off, resetting, etc; and then it just wouldn't work. I removed the thermostat to check the wiring, which was per the instructions. I remounted the thermostat and it's been fine ever since. Like one other reviewer stated, the interface is a bit archaic.

The instruction book and installation manual is for this model and the RTH7600D.

This thermostat is a huge improvement over my old programable which was dying after ten years. Very easy to install with excellent directions even though the instruction sheet appeared to be from the previous years thermostat.

The touch screen is bright and saves the turning on of lamps to view or change vs my old one that many times i used a flashlight to view or make changes.

It keeps the house right at the selected temperature as opposed to a +/1 degree.

It is so easy to use and make changes whether you want to change the program or turn it off or raise or lower the temperature.

I'd highly recommend this thermostat.

This is a better fire place than most but as a TV stand it is pretty average. The construction is good and it is very well made, but the drawers are painfully small and basically pointless. I do have to say though, it doesn't cost very much to operate. Even with the flames going and the unit running pretty much steadily throughout the day and the evening, this is costing only around thirty dollars per month according to what I can figure out on my power bill. I love the realistic look of the flames and that you can set the different settings individually to make just the right fire look. The cord is nice and long and the cabinets are nice. I would recommend it.

Be aware that when they are running they are hot to the touch. Now I can turn down the thermostat at night. My electricity bill has gone up, but my gas bill has gone down considerably and my kids stay warm at night. The best part is that now I don't have to sweat through the night!

I've had 3 of these heaters since early 2009. I've used them in a variety of settings continuous heating, temperature set, etc. After four years, I am a very happy customer!

Pro:

-Very efficient -heats a 10x10 feet room from 50F to 65F in 5 minutes

-Temperature setting -you can set a desired temperature and it will regulate itself around that temp

-Timer -you can set a timer for 1-7 hours in one-hour increments, so you don't have to wonder if you've turned it off when you leave the room

-Remote -it is a surprisingly important convenience, when I'm in bed I can start the heater a few minutes before I get up, and the room is nice and toasty. I hate getting out of bed into a cold room.

-Small footprint -the pedestal base is small, which makes an easy fit inside a closet during the summer (the bottom also disassembles easily if you really want to save on space)

-Safety -it shuts off if it is toppled over, and the front grill is not too hot (so if you or a child touch it, it won't burn the skin)

Cons:

-I suppose someone could make a comment about the appearance of the heater, but I usually don't care about the "beauty" of a product that does its job great

FYI:

-Sound level -this is not a silent heater. It sounds like a small fan, well because it has a fan inside.

Overall, great product that I'm very happy to recommend.

I just swapped this model in today for a 9 year old non-programmable thermostat today and the first thing I've noticed is how loud of a click the relay makes when the A/C turns on/off. I've never heard a thermostat make this loud of a click. Kind of annoying. The thermostat seems to read a more accurate temperature than my builder quality thermostat that was in the house when it was built 9 years ago.

If you live in Arizona do NOT buy this product. In one year we are in the process of getting our third replacement for queen size chilipad. The other two units, just started circulating room temperature water after a couple months of use. They wont give us a refund since we are past the short warranty period, so we have to keep asking for a replacement. And since we are past one year now, we may not get that replacement. The machine cools the water using ambient air in your room. If you live in Arizona where in the summer the outside temp doesnt drop below 80 and many nights, 90, the room in your home is not cold. The Air conditioning system (as with the chilipad) can only bring the inside air down about 20 degrees from the outside air. Thats just a fact of mother nature versus machine. So lets say your room is 80 degrees at night (A/C on), the chilipad really can only bring it down to 60 degrees in theory. Not 48 deg etc. We have never seen 60 degrees regardless. The moment you lie on the pad, it starts to warm due to body heat. So if the machine gets down to 60, it quickly warms up into the 70s. Guess what, you are almost at your room temp by now. The chilipad cannot stay cool. Its just math. Our first machine died on us after two months. It just has to work too hard in the Southwest to attempt to keep the pad cool. Now if you live in Alaska or some place where the nights are cool, this system may work for you. In Winter the system cools great. But that defeats the purpose. Why cool your bed if its already cold? Again its because the ambient room temperature during winter is colder. Thats about the only time you can get this machine to cool down to 50 or lower.

But in locations where the outside air just doesnt cool down at night (Arizona), this system cannot work. So i am sure there are good reviews out there for this product. I am sure just none from hot climates, which defeats the purpose of using the chilipad. The warranty for this product is only a couple months, which isnt long enough. Especially when you are pumping water through a pad on your bed. Too many things can and do go wrong. Be very careful if you spend the money for this unit. The unit has NEVER cooled to anything near what it says in any condition we have tested it in. Add warm climates and forget it. Its a lot of money to waste.

I really hoped that this product would deliver; the idea of keeping your mattress cool in the summer months sounded so seductive. I first started with the queen sized single unita model the company no longer sells because at their own admission, the pad would't get chilly. So then I tried a single unit full sized pad, and it worked a little more efficiently, but still it didn't do the job. So finally I bit the bullet and upgraded to the dual system queen size. The temperature settings purportedly can be adjusted between 46-116˚, but when I set the pumps to the coolest temp, one reached a tepid 66˚and the other 62˚, and that was with my AC cranked to full throttle. I think the pumps' cooling mechanism depend on ambient temperature, so if your room is warm and humid, there is no chance that this product is going to reach the lowest setting. So perhaps if you live in a house/apartment with central air and lots of open space, this may in fact, work well. I happen to rent in the NYC area, where summers are hot and humid, and the older apartments are cramped convection ovens. If you are a latter dweller, then this is not the answer to your hot and sleepless nights. I gave the product one star for two reasons: 1 the heating mechanism works great and with winter on its way, it will be nice to have the extra benefit of warmth, and 2 customer service was genuinely interested in trying to solve my problem. Bottom line: I would not recommend this product.

Then it sends the water back to you. It's a simple idea and well executed by the Chilipad. The response is fast. You will never again have a hot spot in your bed as the Chilipad is constantly responding and adjusting to your selected tempurature setiing. Put a big, cozy comforter on the bed and, no matter the ambient tempurature, the tempurature under the covers stays right where you want it to be. Super product for those of us who have different tempurature needs in a single, queen bed. Sharing a comforter no longer means sharing the same heat.

My biggest fear was that this would not be quiet. It is very quiet. I only hear it when I first turn it on and then I don't hear it at all in 2 or 3 min. Usually any noise bothers me when I sleep.

It works very well keeping me at the temperature that I have set. It took a little experimentation to get "my temp" but after that it is set.

I did order the extension tubing because the device did not fit under, right next to the bed due to the nightstand.

My wife loves it as well a I.

I don't have a whole lot of good things to say about this fridge, because the good things are all too general. The bad things are specific and easy to write about.

This one seems to be well made. It doesn't feel cheap, and the door seals well. I keep it in my basement where I haven't had any trouble with temperature or noise.

The bad things: Tall wine bottles do not fit, nor do some bottles when you put a vacuum stopper in. The light switch is inside (not a big deal). The fan runs all the freaking time (the cooling unit does not), so it draws a lot of power.

It has room for six bottles in the top compartment, and nine bottles below. The temperature in the top can only be set for white whine, and the bottom for red. This is strange, because you're more likely to run out of room for white, yet it's reds that can be stored at room temperature. We often have a bottle or two of white sitting on top of it, waiting to be chilled.

I would have rated this three stars if the fan ever kicked off.

I've had my wine cooler for a year and a half; however, after 1 year it began to slowly die. Of course when I called the service center it was 1 month after the warranty expired and I had to pay $25 per fan, two of which have already needed to be replaced and the unit still isn't working. The service center consists of 1 guy who isn't very accommodating, understanding or very knowledgeable out side of the "well, these things aren't made to last, you have to replace parts" attitude. As of now I can't store reds in the unit at all because the average temperature level is around 68-72! The white section won't spoil my wine yet, but its not the 43-45 that it should be. At this point I'm just waiting for the unit to die completely so I can call the junk man to come haul it away!

Something this expensive should last A LOT longer than 1 1/2 years!

Fan runs constantly! Enclosed documentation says "this is normal". Since the fan is always on and is not a particularly quiet fan, this cooler actually makes more noise, on average, than my standard refrigerator.

1 yr update:

I have found that it isn't really the fan that is noisy per se, but the design of the sheet metal backing the area over the fans block enough of the air that significant noise ensues. A much quieter cooler can be had by removing the backplate or Dremel/jigsaw/hacksaw modification to remove the area over the fans.

Another unfortunate issue there is actually a third fan inside case, whose heat sink has a bad tendency to ice over; the ice actually gets large enough to touch the fan, and then this cooler gets REALLY loud. Taking the back and first two fans off to reach the third fan is not too much work, and has to be done (for my system) every 6 months or so to defrost this fan YMMV, based on your local indoor humidity, I'd guess. Overall, I'm happy enough with this cooler now to upgrade to 4 stars.

My 18 bottle wine cooler failed after 17 months. It would not cool. I called wine enthusiast and they thought the problem could be fixed by installing a new circuit board. They sent me a new circuit board (at no cost) which I installed. This did not fix the problem. I called them again and they told me they could not help me. I called/emailed them several times to try to get service for this product. Wine Enthusiast has never responded to these requests for service or information. So I am now stuck with a Wine Enthusiast wine cooler that does not cool.

Very nice looking product, seems to be very well constructed and not at all cheesy.

Thermometer is right on the money with my two HVAC thermostats.

Thermostats display in full degrees, while the TE513 displays full degrees plus tenths.

When the 513 goes from 9/10th to the next full degree, my thermostats change right with it. They couldn't be calibrated closer.

The hygrometer, which is the main reason I purchased the 513, isn't perfect, but it is pretty darn close.

I tested it using the dampened salt in a closed container method, and it topped out at 72%, which is just 3 ticks from the expected 75%.

Neither the 513 thermometer nor hygrometer can be adjusted, so you live with the variance, but for normal household humidity use, 3 ticks off is close enough for me.

I was skeptical about ordering the 513 after reading the 02/05/10 one star review of the charcoal 513 from "Tommy" Aube by Honeywell TE513-7/U Electronic Indoor Thermometer and Humidistat, Charcoal, but figured I'd roll the dice.

I'm going to roll the dice again and order three more 513's, one for the basement, and use the other two as gifts.

Bottom line is, I'm pleased with the product

I purchased two of these units. I kept reporting that the humidity levels for my new humidifiers were too low. A Honeywell factory rep came with his unit and we discovered that both units are off as much as 15%. Remember, this product is made by Honeywell. To prove this to myself, I put the units outdoors and compared them to the observations by the National Weather Service. They were off 20%. I do not recommend this product.

I bought two, out of the package one said 20% the other 40%. I put one upstairs and one downstairs. Over a few days those readings stayed within a few points of where they started. Then I switched them, moving the 40% one upstairs and 20% one downstairs. They essentially kept the same readings. The 20% keeping about 20% whether upstairs or downstairs and the 40% keeping about 40% whether upstairs or downstairs. Then I brought both upstairs. Still, about 20% and 40%. The only logical conclusion is that they really don't work.

This small humidity and temperature gauge works well. It is reasonably priced and gives a readout nearly as accurate as a gauge from Oregon Scientific which is many times the price of this gauge. I use this as a second humidity readout in a room away from the more elegant Oregon Scientific gauge.

I had an older, more expensive small gauge and bought this one to be a second gauge for a different location in the house. Later I bought the Oregon Scientific instrument. When I compared the humidity readings between this gauge and the others, this one and the Oregon Scientific agreed. The older, more expensive small gauge was so far off from the others that it went into the trash.

This is a good unit. You won't be disappointed. It is as accurage as a small, low cost unit can be.

Always wondered how hot it was in the office and now I know. I just keep this at my desk and when it hits 80 I head home. I also liked the humidity sensor but right now it reads "LO" which I discovered means it is below the 20% threshold that it can detect. If you need to know very low humidity settings this might not work for you. I keep the humidifier at about 35% at home in the winter and wanted to see how close it was getting.

I purchased one of these about ten years ago. I bought it because I wanted something simple and reliable that didn't need a battery. Nor did I want something that required me to spend an hour with the operating manual learning how to use it. Since I had no interest at the time in a programmable thermostat, Honeywell's classic round model was a good choice.

It served me well for ten years. But a few days ago (during the height of the scorching Texas summer heat I might add), I arrived home one evening to find my place a toasty 89 degrees. My first assumption was that the AC compressor had died. I soon discovered that the Fan Switch on the thermostat was intermittent when in the "Auto" position.

After jiggling the switch several times it seemed to be working OK. But I awoke the following morning to a hot room, and realized I was going to need a new thermostat. Since I still have no interest in a programmable thermostat (or one that uses a battery), I decided that the simplest thing to do was to replace it with the exact same model and be done with it (or so I thought).

Although the new Honeywell model looks the same as the old one, that's where the similarities end. The old model was completely mechanical and had a mercury switch. The new one doesn't have a mercury switch. But what it does have is a circuit board and a lithium battery. A battery? I thought I was purchasing a simple mechanical thermostat.

Honeywell's outer packaging fails to mention anything about a battery. The only reference to it is in the owner's manual. And that's only to warn you that the lithium battery may contain perchlorate material, and that special handling may apply. In fact, there's no battery hatch on the thermostat, nor any screws that can be unscrewed to take it apart.

Although it might be possible to pry the thermostat apart, it's obvious that Honeywell never intended the consumer to replace the battery. I can only conclude that when the battery dies, Honeywell expects you to throw the thermostat away and buy a new one (the people in the marketing department at Honeywell must absolutely love this).

Further research suggests that the internal lithium battery may last ten years. But even if this is true, does it make sense to throw away a functioning thermostat just because the battery died? I don't think so. Some people have a mechanical thermostat in their home that's over twenty years old and it's still working fine.

Despite Honeywell's logic regarding the battery, I decided to install the thermostat anyway to see how it worked. First of all, the thermometer that indicates ambient room temperature was off by almost five degrees. I know this because I compared it with three other thermometers I have (both analog and digital) that are all within a degree of each other. This wouldn't be so bad if Honeywell gave you a way to adjust the thermometer, but they didn't. Thanks a lot Honeywell!

Oh well. What's more important it how well the thermostat actually performs. Since I conducted my tests in the summer, I have no idea how well the heat function works. But I can tell you that in the AC mode the thermostat shuts off a full four (4) degrees before it reaches the preset temperature (and there's no way to adjust it).

For example: I set the thermostat to 74 degrees, but it shut off when the temperature in the room was 78 degrees. I eventually had to set the thermostat to 70 in order to cool the room to 74. As a comparison, my old Honeywell thermostat and thermometer was accurate within two degrees of the actual room temperature. So much for new and improved!

I returned the new Honeywell thermostat and purchased a mechanical model made by White-Rodgers (model 1F56N-444). This thermostat is also mercury free. But unlike the Honeywell unit I returned, it doesn't need a battery.

After installation I noticed that the built-in thermometer was reading about 3 degrees high. No problem. Unlike the Honeywell that couldn't be adjusted, White-Rodgers gives you an easy way to adjust the thermometer with a screwdriver.

As with the Honeywell, I wasn't able to properly test the heat function of the White-Rodgers thermostat in August. But the cooling is accurate within two degrees and it works like it should. Even better, the White-Rodgers thermostat costs about 25% less than the Honeywell.

Pros & Cons for "The Round" Honeywell thermostat:

Pros: It has that classic round look.

Cons:

1. Thermostat is not accurate (off by four degrees in AC mode, heat mode not tested).

2. Thermometer is not accurate (off by almost five degrees and is not consumer adjustable).

3. It needs a battery (Honeywell doesn't bother to tell you this on the package).

4. Battery not designed to be replaced by the consumer.

5. When the battery dies, throw the thermostat away and buy a new one.

Final thoughts: Would I recommend a new Honeywell "Round" thermostat to a friend? Absolutely not! By the way, in the past these were made in the USA. But the one I purchased was assembled in Mexico.

Since its introduction in 1953, Honeywell has reportedly sold more than 58 million of these T-86 round thermostats. That's an amazing number. And there's a reason they're so popular: They work, they're simple and they'll last a long time.

In Summer 2007, we had central air installed in our old house and the dealer wanted to put in a programmable digital thermostat. I loathe digital thermostats for a whole host of reasons but in this case, I didn't want a beige, chincey-looking plastic box hanging on the wall in my beautiful upstairs hallway. The dealer brought out a couple of these T-86 thermostats and I opted for the white (as shown here) for a couple reasons.

One, the white casing makes it much less obvious on white walls. That's a plus. The bigger selling point is the size of the numbers on the dial's face. The numerals on this model (YCT87K1003) are dark, large and well-spaced, making it easy to read both room temp and set temp. In an upstairs hallway with minimal overhead lighting, that is very important. In a house where two near-sighted, bespectacled and middle-aged people live, that is very important.

Another plus is that many of these modern T-86 thermostats (unlike prior models) contain no mercury. Another nice feature is the trim ring, which is very forgiving for installing into existing buildings (where cutting into walls is required).

You can probably buy a knock-off product for less, but speaking as someone with a background in architecture, I'd stick with Honeywell. They've been making thermostats since the 1880s when they started with the "Damper Flapper," a primitive switch-type mechanism designed for coal-fired furnaces that used a motor to open and shut the damper.

In my downstairs foyer, I have one of the 1930s Honeywell Thermostats, complete with its solid brass housing and the words "Minneapolis-Honeywell" on its front. More than 70 years old and it's still a dandy!

I highly recommend this contemporary T-86 Honeywell Round. It's been an industry standard for more than five decades. And the best news? The most recent information I could find shows that this product is "Made in America".

DON'T !!! I'm sixty four years old and have installed a lot of thermostats. This one is such a piece of junk that I almost threw it away. The screws that hold the wires are so small that I had to use a jeweler's screw driver. They aren't strong enough to hold the wires. There are are these small non tapered screws that hold the circuitry on that are a fingernail longer that the recessed holes they go in which keep falling out and disappearing. A real frustration piece. This is not the Honeywell brand that I grew up with. This one and my last one were cheap crap. I will change brands next time.

I have four of the round Honeywell thermostats in our house built in 2005, three for zone heat and one for A/C and zone heat (#T87F 2873 3). Ours has the mercury bubble unlike some of the newer ones that are mercury-free. None of them maintain the temperature settings very accurately. For instance there were times when the thermometer on the thermostat showed 3 degrees below the setting but the heat would not come on; at another time the temperature might be 3 degrees above the setting but the heat would not shut off. My main thermostat is off by about 6 degrees but that varies from time to time. Sometimes the heat or A/C comes on and goes off 6 degrees from the setting, other times it is just a couple degrees off. We had the builder replace the A/C thermostat but the replacement acts pretty much like the first one.

The list price of $70 (as seen on an Amazon seller site) for the non-electronic thermostat is very unreasonable. None of the parts are made of material worth more than a few cents. I may be showing my age but it doesn't seem like too long ago when the round thermostats sold for $5.

The round Honeywell thermostats do last a long time because there is hardly anything in them to go wrong. The electronic thermostats that I've had in former houses have nice features but seem to last only a couple years before malfunctioning. Lightning or power surges or poor design must do them in. I give the round thermostats 2 stars at least because they last a while, though in my case, not very accurately.

I bought this for the ease of installation as I am not very mechanically inclined. The directions were easy to understand and I had everything done in under 20 minutes. One of the things I like about it besides its price was the wall cover that comes with it and hides all traces of the previous thermometer installation.
