I've had this unit for a year. It remains fully functional and very useful as a room heater. I've dropped it a couple of times and no problems. I like the safety mechanism whereby it shuts off if not sitting on a flat surface; I'd rather not start any fires. The grill covering the heating element has small holes and therefore appears secure as far as not letting anything fly inside to cause a fire. I am not able to see any hot-red heating elements, unlike in some space heaters, which adds to the impression of safety. The heater has two warmth settings, and I mostly use the higher one and very rarely the cooler one. It also has a fan-only setting where no heat is imparted. The tall shape helps distribute the heat more evenly, I believe, as does the fact that it rotates. I rarely use the rotating function because I don't think it adds much to distributing the heat, but I don't really know since I rarely use this function. The unit is also very quiet.

I picked this up by chance one day when I was in a supermarket and saw it marked down. As I was in need of a space heater, I decided to buy it. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out and was going to return it if it didn't work out. This unit has worked out well for me for the price.

I ordered this product specifically because it was labeled as being 'quiet'. When it arrived (on time) it was smaller than expected although when I plugged it in and fired it up it was putting out a surprising amount of heat rather quickly. The BIG problem was the rattling noise. It sound like the casing was never connected properly to the internals and it does rattle. Okay for some, annoying for me. Don't know if I will be able to sleep with it on. One really cool feature on it is the anti tip device which is just a button on the bottom of the base on the floor side that has to be depressed by the units weight in order for it to work. All in all, heats well, annoying sound.

I got this heater for my dorm at school. The room is probably about 15x15 (I'm really not sure but its big enough for four guys) and it definitely makes a difference in the temperature of the room. It can be somewhat weak when you are using it to blow heat directly on you as a fan but i had a really small desk fan i put behind it to generate more air so i don't have that problem really. I would recommend this heater, i like the swivel feature and the whole lack of thermostat isn't a big deal. Put it on high and you are good if its cold. I put 4 stars just because it isn't perfect but it will get the job done. A more expensive heater i didn't have the extra cash for would get 5 stars.

Soleus Air # HC7-15-01 does NOT have a thermostat. The description in Amazon says it does and that is wrong. The cost to ship this back is too high, so we will keep this unit for use in our barn work area. It's a shame that we have to keep a product that was described wrong. The unit looks like it would be great if it had a thermostat as described.

Excellent supplemental source of heat. As with most portable heaters, it takes awhile to warm the area, but it is more than adequate. I really like the air purifier and humidifier functions. Everything works well and the unit is quite user friendly, particualrly with the remote. Great price for value with this model! Company was wonderful to work with.

I was skeptical but hopeful when purchasing this item given the weak 8,000BTU rating and positive reviews. It's easy to set up for sure, and it blows cold air... but it doesn't do much of anything to cool a room. We put it in a 12x10 living room with a 4x6 blinded window in a small apartment well within the square footage rating for the air conditioner. Even with the temperature outside only reaching the low 80s, this air conditioner never made a single degree of impact to the living room temperature. By sitting within two-three feet of the unit, I could feel the cold air and feel a little better. But even just a few feet away, the room was hot. Also, although the automatic vents are neat, they don't move at all, so the unit fires mostly upward, probably 75 degrees angle from the floor. For a room where people primarily sit and yes, understanding of the "heat rises" idea the air goes right at the ceiling. I'm not sure if this is a design flaw or just an inconvenience. Regardless, the unit was completely ineffective and I'm returning it to Amazon.

I wanted to replace my 8000 btu window unit with a portable and figured an 8000 btu portable would be work fine. Boy was I wrong, this air conditioner despite the frigid sounding name, is anything but cold. My room is virtually a shoebox and this unit was not able move the dial more than 3-4 degrees. Very disappointing. The fan louvers were also not working right, it would get stuck and then jerk open forcefully.

The window kit is thin and tacky does not work well at all for horizontally sliding window. And in case you weren't aware, apparently you have to drain this air conditioner every few hours to keep it going.

Wish it worked like an air conditioner but it's just not working out at all.

Just finalized the return on this item with compact appliance (great customer service!) and I'm exchanging it for a frigidaire window unit at their recommendation over the phone.

Purchased this a month early before temperatures started to rise here in NYC. We have a small apt and planned on using this in either a 140 Sq ft room or a 90 sq ft room and this Koldfront isn't powerful enough to cool EITHER effectively.

Yes COULDN'T EFFECTIVELY COOL A 90 Sq ft room

It also BARELY dehumidified the room, if at all. We felt like we were in mildly cool dampness during our sleep.

I have no idea where these 5 star reviews are coming from, I base a lot of my purchasing decisions on amazon reviews and this is the first one I'm writing because this was such a terrible purchase.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy this unit.

For a comparison, we have a Haier 5,200 BTU window unit and it is WAY more effective than this

Currently, looking for a better option and will return this one. Outside of the exhaust hose being gargantuin, and the window insert provided is for vertical window, not horizontal. And it's true that it does a poor job cooling the room. It also is loud on low, medium, or high. We have it in our living room, and you can't have a conversation while it's on let alone hear the television. More time was spent on design of this piece than function. May work for a bedroom for white noise, but the volumn of fan is more on the intolerable side.

I bought this in 1991 when I had a heat pump installed. I've used it through two HP installations, and it works as good as new. It ramps up to temp without turning on emergency heat unescessarilly, like some of the newer units do. No, it doesn't have the fancy large screen display like the new ones, but as far as dependability and price, it can't be beat. BTW, the price for it here, with shipping, is about what I payed for it from contractor in 1991. Highly recommended.

We've been using the single element version of this (Cadco PCR-1S Professional Cast Iron Range, Stainless) for a year and liked the quality but wanted lower wattage options for simmering as well as the ability to run two elements at once on our limited off-grid power system. This dual element version fit the bill and as an added bonus leaves a useable amount of counter space in front of it (it's not as deep as the single element version--see added product pictures comparing both units side-by-side).

While the single element unit (1600W) linked above is ideal for large pots (over 12" diameter) which do not fit so well on the smaller dual element unit, this dual element unit provides a more even simmer with lower wattage elements (1000 + 650 = 1650W) (total wattage is per nameplate on items--guessing a bit on dual element individual element wattage as product description does not add up to match nameplate). Elements cycle on/off (thermostatic control), so temperature does go up and down, and the swings are more violent with higher wattage. But if you want to boil a large pot fast (say for canning), the single element unit will get it there faster with the higher wattage.

Note that both the PCR-1S (single element) and PCR-2S (this one, dual element) come under both Cadco and Broil King brands--same units with different branding (much like Cadco counter top convection ovens are Unox convection ovens).

One reviewer complained of smell with these units. We're pretty picky about such things, but have had no issues since the initial 10min burn in recommended in the instructions (did it outdoors and would suggest doing likewise). We appreciate quality (and have experience with typical cheap hot plates) and would buy these again.

2013-08-07 Update after over one year of daily use for most of our cooking and frying: We've had no problems and are still very happy with this unit, using it for all summer cooking and much of the winter cooking in our off-grid home. For many things, we've found this more convenient than the wood stove even when the wood stove is already running due to the ability to set and forget temperature. We still prefer the wood stove for pancakes though, as it has room for four large griddles--something this can't compete with :)

I followed the ten minute burn in that instructions called for. It smoked and smelled and now that its over (let the unit cool completely), I haven't experienced any odor problems that a few seem to have complained about. Maybe they didn't read the directions? After the burn in came the test: 8 quarts of water on the big burner and a sauce pan on the little one. It boiled both in about ten minutes. That's fine by me! The knobs feel solid and good under my finger tips while providing a nice adjustment range. The unit works just fine as there's plenty of heat and I'm very happy with it. One note: after I was all beaming over the unit, I noticed a hole in the back of the unit where it looks like a screw might have gone missing. It hasn't. I ordered a replacement unit (Amazon sent it free and within two days) and it was the same. I contacted the manufacturer and this is normal. From their email: "There is actually not a screw missing on the left side of the range there. The hole is there because of the pre-punched metal sheets that are used when manufacturing the units." Great buy in my opinion.

The range worked well for about six months and then the left burner quit working altogether. By that time the cast iron burners were starting to show signs of rust in places. While it cooked reasonably well, it was very slow to heat up, and equally slow to cool down. The controls are quite good for simmering and warming, but it is not really made for cooking. I would NOT buy another, and in fact have replaced it with a two burner induction cooktop that is far superior for cooking.

Review of Venstar WIFI ColorTouch High Resolution Color Thermostat w/ Touch

This thermostat installs very easily, especially if you have all the necessary wiring. I had a White-Rogers thermostat with a faulty outdoor sensor. Rather than replace the sensor, I upgraded to this t-stat for the color screen and online connectivity. The big benefits to this t-stat over others is:

1) can't beat the price

2) color screen is customizable and looks very high end

3) extremely easy to use and good looking user interface

4) no stupid expensive wireless gateway needed, just a simple WiFi card.

Mine is hooked up to a Rudd 2 stage A/C 2 stage heat pump with LP furnace unit. The Installer Test Menu was perfect for confirming all stages were working properly. Also, don't miss the dip-switches on the back of the t-stat during installation.

Once wired, it takes 30 seconds to boot up. The setup menus are so easy If you've ever used a Garmin GPS, you'll be right at home with this thermostat. The user interface is setup very similar, with big icons and a menu bar with a "back" button displayed on the bottom of the setup screens. If you want to get really user friendly, you can even enable the simple thermostat option, great for the less computer savvy users. I also love that it shows if you're using 2nd stage cooling or heating.

The Optional outdoor sensor was also extremely easy to install (2 additional wires). I mounted the sensor in my outdoor condenser unit. The outdoor sensor is very simple and doesn't appear to be weather resistant so you want to mount it either in your unit or under an eve or overhang of your home. The installation of this allows you to set a temp you'd like the emergency heat to run (i.e. mine kicks in when the temp goes below 35 degrees). Another benefit to installing the outdoor sensor is that it displays outdoor temp on the t-stat, along with high/low temp for the day in a pull-down menu (after upgrading the firmware).

The Optional WiFi key was also a simple install I had it on my wireless network and registered with VenStar in less than 5 minutes. Once it's online, you create an account on VenStar's website and enter the MAC address displayed on the t-stat. You then have full control of the t-stat and all configurations from your computer. Once you have your account created, you can also download the VenStar app on your phone. After signing in with your VenStar account, you can control the t-stat and see your daily/weekly usage.

The only "cons" i can think of is that this t-stat seemed to cycle my equipment more often than my old White-Rogers t-stat. This was easily fixed by adjusting the deadband settings and number of cycles allowed per hour in the installer menu. Also, why not include WiFi in the unit Having the key stick out defeats the purpose of purchasing a different colored frame. I'd like to see some more functionality in the App (such as ability to edit the weekly or vacation schedule), but these configurations can be made from your computer and could show up in a firmware upgrade. Also, make sure you have an SD card available so you can upgrade the t-stat firmware I used one from my digital camera.

I really can't give this t-stat enough praise. My buddy who works for a HVAC company commented that this is probably the easiest thermostat to configure. If you want an inexpensive, great looking color screen, and WiFi connected thermostat look no further. I've added some pictures in the user picture gallery.

Love this thermostat. Just had the HVAC replaced so upgraded the thermostat with this Venstar Wifi to replace a previous (line of site) remote controlled thermostat that never worked.

This was installed by my HVAC technician and is perfect. I am able to control and see the temp in real-time via the Venstar website or mobile app. Can program the HVAC functions (time on/time off/vacation/fan only mode) as well.

It is a little expensive but I really like it.

The unit connects to my house's wireless network using the plug in accessory. It has a very nice colorful display with dimming or screensaver options. It also has a technician option that shows what wires are connected to the leads and if they are active.

I have played with the various features including turning the temp up and down as well as turning the HVAC off and on with my iphone while standing outside in front of it.

The documentation says it came be used in vacation homes to control temps. The systems also shows the total runtime via reports.

Hopefully it will stand the test of time and for right now, I highly recommend this item!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased 2 T5800 thermostats with WiFi Key and I was able to wire and install both units fairly easily with the instructions provided. Although I have a strong wifi signal throughout my home, I initally could not get either WiFi Key to be found or find my home network. A quick email to customer support was returned within the same day and provided the perfect solution (which was not provided in the manual). If you have a similar problem connecting your WiFi Key to your home network try this: Insert the WiFi Key into the thermostat slot; using the thumb tabs on the bottom of the thermostat, pull away until the thermostat is unpowered; with the WiFi Key still in place, reinsert the thermostat to reboot it; the connection to the home network then worked easily.

The ability to adjust the thermostats by smart phone, ipad, PC, or Mac is fantastic and provides all sorts of options for control remotely. My home is accurately cooled/heated within the parameters that I chose and the climate in my home is being efficiently controlled.

I am extremely pleased with this product. This purchase was my first ‘smart thermostat'. The Venstar has a great web interface and it easily allows you to program the schedule and adjust the settings. You can do the same things directly through the thermostat, but I found it easier to perform these tasks on a computer. Also, I use an Android smart phone and the mobile app works perfectly as well.

I am a novice to HVAC thermostats, but the installation directions were easy to follow and worked the first time.

One item, I wish you could update the firmware via the wireless interface. In order to update the firmware on the device, you have to download the "Color Touch Assistant" software to a computer, load the software update on an SD card. Then, you have to remove the thermostat from the wall, remove the wifi card, put the SD card in, re-install the thermostat to the wall and then perform the upgrade. When the upgrade is done, you have to remove the thermostat from the wall, remove the SD card, re-install the wifi card and reattached the thermostat to the wall.

Performing this upgrade is not a big deal to me, but it is time consuming. However, most people probably don't need to maintain the latest firmware unless they are having issues. I just like to be on the latest and greatest software.

We were a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews here that indicated that two of these units read several degrees apart from each other. We purchased two units to check the temp of our new fridge and freezer as well as checking the temps on our second fridge in our garage. We used a high quality digital probe to compare readings and found that both units were accurate and both units displayed the exact same reading when placed together in the same location.

Based on this, we can't agree with the low score reviews that indicated otherwise. The dial on this themometer is large and easy to read and responds quickly to temp changes such as when the door of the fridge or freezer is opened for any length of time. Considering the affordable price, you could do much worse than this product!

We are very pleased with the purchase and may even purchase two additional units so that we can have permanent temp monitoring in both of our fridges.

I purchased this thermometer to replace an inaccurate one. I now have two inaccuated ones.

I purchased the Taylor commercial digital "food" thermometer at the same time. I calibrated the "food" thermometer (as per the instructions) in a ice bath. The Taylor "food" thermometer was accurate.

I then compared the calibrated food thermometer to this freezer-refrigerator thermometer, at refrigeration temperatures (38 degrees). This freezer-refrigerator thermometer reads 8 degrees low. This is a potential safety hazard since a refrigerator at 50 degrees would read at a safe level of 42 degrees.

I expected better accuracy, especially since this product bears the NSF logo. There is no calibration adjustment knob/screw on this model.

I plan to contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

I got this unit to monitor humidity inside an enclosure in a laboratory. It works quite well for this purpose and the humidifier control functions as advertised to allow some active control. From a cost standpoint, the unit is a real bargain even if it is only used as a 2-point humidity meter. The only drawback to the unit I received was that there is a 4 degree F temperature offset in the readings (it reads low). Since the unit has a temperature offset adjustment, it is straightforward to correct this error in the unit. Nonetheless, I would not expect a unit like this to exhibit an error of this magnitude out of the box.

My whole house humidifier was setup to work only during the heating season in conjunction with the furnace. I live in Colorado where the humidity even in the summer is very low. This controller allows the humidifier to work independently from the furnace (still using the same ventilation system) and keep the humidity level in the house comfortable year around. The outside thermometer/hygrometer module makes the device smart enough that you do not need to change the humidity setting by hand for temperature changes outside (to prevent condensation issues). Installation and programming took me about 2 hrs.
