Cheap Royal Sovereign Mini Tower Ceramic Heater
This heater is much noisier than the older model I purchased yeats ago and which I am more than content with. I probably wouldn't purchase it again, tho' the price was right. This is the best heater your money can buy. Im putting one in every room. This heater does not cause a surge and make the power go out.

Pros: Unit works well to cool down the air and the noise is tolerable.
Update I was impressed with customer service: minimal wait on the phone, courteous service and prompt replacement of the broken parts (read "Cons" below).
Cons: unit is made entirely of plastic so it breaks easily. To illustrate this point: while assembling, a plastic clip that holds the hoses to the window vent unit broke off. After 4 uses, my wife noticed that a clip that held one of the hoses to the unit itself had also broken off. Bottom line: it is flimsy.
A second drawback is that the window vent section does not adjust to the size of the window. (A piece that we thought would be used to adjust to window size is actually a piece used for a patio door.)
A third drawback is that the hoses and window vent section are rather unwieldy to handle. Frequently, while trying to place the vents on the window while coupled to the hoses, the hoses come off easily off the unit so it is difficult to adjust everything correctly. And yes, the hoses have to be coupled because it is seemingly impossible to try to put them on after placing the vent section on the window.
Portable a/c in general
Do not buy a portable a/c unless you really need its roll about feature. You can purchase efficient (EER above 10), small and quiet window units at half the cost of portable units. That being said, you still might opt for a portable unit if you: do not want to leave a window unit installed permanently, do not want to lift a window a/c in and out of a window each season, do not have access to a large enough window for a window a/c, etc.
If you do decide to purchase a portable a/c, only purchase a two hose unit not a one hose. A one hose unit is almost a scam. It uses room air to cool the unit and then expels the air outside through the one hose. You have just paid to cool that room air, and the one hose unit is equivalent to placing a fan in the window blowing out. Hot outside air will be drawn into the room to replace the air being used to cool the unit. As a result, the unit will provide reduced cooling, and it will run inefficiently. A two hose unit, like this one, uses the second hose to draw in outside air to cool the unit instead of using room air. (This is exactly how window a/c's and central a/c's operate.) Consequently, the two hose unit can cool efficiently and at its full Btu/hr rating.
This particular portable a/c
This unit has the all-important two hoses. It is relatively efficient, not too noisy and will cool a nice size room (200 250 sq ft). For a portable a/c, this unit is as good a choice as I found available, but it has its problems. Here are some with which you must deal.
1. Portable is a relative term. This unit weighs ~ 80 lbs; it is only portable on one floor.
2. The unit is rather large and takes considerable room space. The front of the unit will be about two ft into the room which adds to the room space problem.
3. The hoses are large (5 in diameter) and, to my eye, rather unattractive.
4. The manufacturer recommends running the unit using only one hose at outside temperature above 95 F. So, if it gets rather warm outside, it will get warm inside too.
5. The worst feature of the unit is the poorly designed window installation kit. It does not expand to fit the window width. You will need a saw to make it fit, and then it will not fit another size window if you want to move it. The kit will usually need to be adapted further to fit a window. In my case, there is a window sill, and the kit is not high enough for it. I used some wood pieces, wood stain, my saw again, and weather stripping for the installation. In addition, the hose connectors to the unit did not fit. I used a sharp utility knife to increase the opening size of the connector tabs.
The bottom line: with all of its problems, if you need the feature of a portable a/c, this unit is as good as I found in this small size (9000 Btu/hr).
Worked out of the box
Very quiet
Inexpensive
Outside air intake (sort of)
Broken window adapter replaced under warranty at no cost and little effort
Cons: This item is poorly designed. The manual states that the outside air intake must be detached when the outside temperature exceeds 95 degrees F. to prevent the compressor from overheating (this isn't easily done). Also, the unit mixes room air with the air sucked in from outside. Naturally, this largely defeats the advantage of a dual hose system. Also, the hoses are mounted right behind the cooling coils, which probably disrupts air flow through them. Finally, the parts themselves seem sort of flimsy (particularly the tabs that lock the air hoses to AC).
Other Thoughts: I'm a little disappointed that the thermostat only goes down to 64 degrees. It's worth being aware that the fan seems to run constantly even when the compressor isn't on, and there seems to be a noticeably loud water pump (a guess) that frequently cycles on and off when the humidity is high. Also, this unit comes with casters. You could unscrew them, but there are bolts sticking out past the bottom of the unit.
For the price, I'm satisfied with the air conditioner, but you can probably find better at a higher price point.

this ac works ok its just the window attachment is crap. it is imposible to get it to stay in the window with the weight ofthe hoses and it just falls out of the window. they should of designed it betterHonest reviews on Sunpentown WA-9040DE 9000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Dual
It is hard for me to decide whether to give this review one star or two. Since this is my second unit. I initially received the first one with a crack by the led display so I had to request a return from Amazon. Once I got the return processed, it took over 2 weeks to get a replacement. Once I got the unit, I took it out of the box and did not like what I see. The unit looks old right out of the box. I can clearly see wear and tear by observing the the dust and cowebs on the inside of the window hoses. The unit works but it does not behave like one that I bought new from Amazon. I noticed it is moderately louder and occasionally makes buzzing sound when it is set to 73 degrees. I am not sure if the shipping department sent out the wrong order or thinks that I don't mind a refurbished or returned unit. As I remembered, I paid for a new one and not someone else return. When I first received this, I was thinking about returning the replacement unit but the heat in the house took anyway any motivation to do so. One advice I can give is...if you received a broken unit, I would not advise requesting for a replacement unit. I would request for a refund and reorder again. Learn from my mistake!I would never request for a replacement unit again from Amazon.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Sunpentown WA-9040DE 9000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Dual

I ordered this not knowing that you need a second wrench to hold the other side. Maybe I was supposed to know that going in, but I wasn't going to wait another week while the parts came in... ended up taking my Bimmer to the shop to get the thermostat replaced.Tuesday, August 5, 2014

These little guys are cheap and work great. The literature, however, is unclear on how to use them. When using one, the sensor in the thermostat is disabled, so you have only the one sensor. If you wish to use more than one, you cannot use two...or three, you must use 4.
It works great and solved my problem without having to move the thermostat to where I installed the RTS.
This was the 2nd time I ordered from Plumbing Planet and again they were great. When I ordered it, the "quantity in stock" said "1" which worried me a little. But I ordered it late Friday afternoon and it was at my front door the following Tuesday using UPS Standard.

Bill Henry is correct! This is not the right picture but the description is correct and is exactly what I needed. I think the picture is of the "junction box" that goes with the C7189U if you want to have 4 or 8 remote temperature sensors to use temperature averaging throughtout your house. The RTS is small as it should be, 1 1/2" wide, 2 1/4" tall and 3/4" deep, almost invisible on a white wall.It works great and solved my problem without having to move the thermostat to where I installed the RTS.

After about a month of so of use things seem to be working fine and there has been no problems. It was easy to install.Honest reviews on Honeywell C7189U1005 White Indoor Remote Temperature Sensor
One might assume a a top-of-the-line thermostat, like the Honeywell 8000 series (with fancy touch screens and extensive programming options), would come equipped for a WIRELESS remote sensor. After all, you can get a general purpose (ie, not for a thermostat) wireless sensor for about ten bucks. Unfortunately this sensor must be hard-wired in place. Ugh. BTW If you're willing to run the wire to install it, note that the wire itself isn't included. The ability to have a remote sensor was a big selling point for 8000 series thermostat; the effort required to install it, and inability to relocate it easily after installation is a big unexpected negative.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Honeywell C7189U1005 White Indoor Remote Temperature Sensor

Somewhere in my life I think in Boy Scouts I developed a taste for beef jerky. Years later, in grad school, I realized I could make it at home, as well as dry fruits and vegetables for snacks, with a magical machine called a dehydrator. At the time I picked up a cheap machine $24, I think from Wal-Mart. I was able to make some ground beef jerky, dry some fruits and make my own ground red pepper from peppers I grew in pots in the porch. Soon, the dehydrator lid was cracked, the trays warped, other things got my attention, and forming jerky strips from ground beef was tedious without a jerky gun, so the machine got put up for a number of years.
Six or seven years later, I'm in my career and new house. The interest in making jerky and drying foods is renewed, bolstered by an interest in drying foods for camping. I tried to use the old machine. It's only temperature control was a variable vent on the lid but you still didn't know what temperature you were drying at. (which can be the difference between safe jerky, and jerky that will make you quite sick) I'm probably lucky I never got sick. The airflow was also quite inconsistent. One end of an item would be overdried, while the other end wasn't dried at all. These things would just ruin entire batches of food. Additionally, there were no drying sheets available for it to make leathers ("fruit roll-ups," but you can also dry things like spaghetti sauce.) I decided to get a better dehydrator.
I researched dehydrators, and found several books and online reviews pointing to the American Harvest (NESCO) Gardenmaster. The FD-1018 and FD-1010 are the same machine, but the FD-1018 includes more trays, more leather sheets, more mesh sheets (a finer mesh than the tray which allows drying of smaller objects, like chopped veggies, without falling through the trays), and a book on drying.
The most important features of this dehydrator are the temperature control (dry veggies at 135-145F, meats at 145-155F), and the fact that it is carefully designed for uniform airflow on every sheet. This last advantage cannot be emphasized enough. With the Gardenmaster, I don't have to worry about moving items around and shuffling trays for consistent results. It's actually pretty amazing how well it works!
The Gardenmaster has been getting a workout making jerkies, fruit leathers, and dehydrating vegetables for taking to camp.
As for choosing the FD-1010 or FD-1018, if you're investing this kind of money, I'd highly recommend going to the FD-1018. The price difference more than made up for the cost of purchasing the additional trays, additional accessories and book separately (at least when I purchased it). You will find that you can EASILY fill a half dozen trays. (I used 5 trays the other night to dry just 2 lbs of ground beef jerky.) You don't want to overcrowd foods. You also get enough leather sheets for all of the trays and enough screens for all of the trays. It's frustrating to find that you have enough trays for your drying task, but only have 2 or 3 screens or sheets. The book HOW TO FRY FOODS by Delong is also included. I intend to cover that in an individual review, but it is a worthwhile book and much more substantial than the directions you'd otherwise receive with a dehydrator.
If you don't want to spend this kind of money until you see how much you'll use it, you may want to try the smaller NESCO FD-50 Snackmaster, which also has temperature control, although it only goes to 145F, which is the minimum for meat. As I said, NESCO seems to know the secret of uniform airflow, and I expect this knowledge to be extended to the FD-50.
Don't try to skimp too much on a dehydrator, or you will pay for ruined food, wasted time and frustration. If it is in your price range, you will no be disappoined with the FD-1018 Gardenmaster.
UPDATE: If you're upgrading to this from a less powerful model, beware that it may dry MUCH faster! I've ruined a couple of batches of jerky turned REALLY leathery before I realized I was OVERdrying! Can't leave it drying jerky overnight.
I wasn't disappointed.
Preformance Same as the smaller version, Jerky in 4 hours, apple chips in 6. Higher capacity for sure but not night and day difference from the smaller one. This ones strenght comes in that you can stack a whole lot of trays.
Features A dehydrator with an off switch. What a concept. Put a timer on it and maybe you'll be in the 20th century! Why they can't put these things on is beyond me. I still use a light timer but at least now I don't have to unplug it.
Build One another area of improvement over it smaller brother. Seems to be built a lot better. Has more weight to it and just seems like a higher quality item.
If you want a deydrator to handle volume don't hesitate to get this one. Its got plenty of features, power and capacity.
Pros: Great product, easy to use, easy to clean
Cons: Noisy, Out of date booklet.
Special Note: Dried honeydew mellon is wonderful!
I've had this dehydrator for awhile now, and have pretty much put everything I have in my kitchen into it. I've made tons of beef, elk, and deer jerky with great results. I've dried carrots, peas, corn, tomatoes, garlic, onions, star fruit, pears, strawberries, grapes (into raisins), bell peppers, jalepenos, and various garden herbs. I've even made my own chicken base with this thing. It's great.
In a home kitchen, some may complain about it being a little loud. That should be expected seeing as it is nothing more than a fan and a heating coil with a bunch of plastic trays stacked on top. I think it takes up too much space to keep in the kitchen or living room anyway, so I store mine in the basement where it can make all the noise in the world without bothering anyone. I have used this at work in the professional kitchen, and with the humming and whirling of the vents and ovens and other noise makers throughout the kitchen, it seems virtually noise free.
I've had it running non-stop for as long as a six weeks straight while drying out my garden in preparation for the winter, and have not noticed any problems with over heating or wear. As simple of a design as it is, it seems to be built fairly solid. I'm definitely happy with my investment.
I can do three times the amount Jerky in half the time as with the Ronco and don't have to worry about the trays cracking while washing. If you are considering paying the extra $$$ for the Nesco over the Ronco, don't. It's a no-brainer. The Nesco does more Jerky faster, eliminates the need to turn the racks, and you don't have to use kid gloves to handle the trays.
Highly, highly recommended.

If you are tired of paying too much for dried fruit at the store I strongly recommend a dehydrator. I chose this one based on the good reivews and I haven't been disappointed. Special Note: the more trays the better! To limit drying time I slice fruit very thin so that takes up more trys. Also, there is work involved in the prep and clean up so why not get most fruit out of a single drying session? This is not a quiet item so plan on using it in a different room.Pros: Great product, easy to use, easy to clean
Cons: Noisy, Out of date booklet.

The important aspects to look for when looking for a good dehydrator are accurate temperature control, good air flow, and adequate space for the amount of food that you want to dehydrate. A couple years ago I bought the Ronco and reviewed it (the review is way back there now). I took my own advice and bought this Nesco and oh man am I happy!I can do three times the amount Jerky in half the time as with the Ronco and don't have to worry about the trays cracking while washing. If you are considering paying the extra $$$ for the Nesco over the Ronco, don't. It's a no-brainer. The Nesco does more Jerky faster, eliminates the need to turn the racks, and you don't have to use kid gloves to handle the trays.
Highly, highly recommended.

Found that I could enjoy my guests. Usually am exhausted because I'll cook on the grill all day to ensure that folks have warm food. This device has a small footprint, so it was perfect for a smaller kitchen. The ability to control the temperature and 5 serving compartments proved very convenient. Would definitely recommend.
