General Electric AST05LK 5,050 BTU Window A/C Reviews

It cools pretty well. Not ice cold but I dont' like it getting ice cold. I have it in a small room but it says on the box that it's for a 100 square foot room and my room is about 200 square feet. So, maybe in a 100 square foot room it would get ice cold. I don't know.

It does have this high pitched noise on the high air selection. It doesn't bother me at all. Anything that covers up the neighbor's dogs barking at night is a plus for me because it's a constant sound. But that may irk some people.

On the lower temps it doesn't have any sound, though.

This unit is small. Don't expect miracles from it. It's good for a kid's room or a room you use once so often like a reading room or a den.

You also have to install the side pleats yourself. It's really not that difficult but it was unexpected. No biggie.

Overall I'm satisfied with this product. The asking price was reasonable, I got free shipping from Pavillon and it cools the room. What more could you want?

Not for a person who has a room bigger than 100 square foot and likes seriously cold air conditioners, though.

Oh yeah, it doesn't have any of those annoying led lights. I hate those things that seem to be every electrical appliance you buy these days. Really irritating. But this unit has no glowing lights coming off of it except where the plug is and you can hide that behind furniture. Yay.

For me, this was a plus.

THe controls are very simple and I like simple.

I ordered this air condtioner because of GE reputation as a large and well known company. What was most important for me was "low noise level"; this air conditioner is quieter than other comparable air conditioners.

I wanted an inexpensive, lightweight & quiet a/c unit. This one fits the bill perfectly. It does not have all the bells & whistles like most, but who cares if it keeps the room cool. Which it does very well. I have it in a 12 x 14 room and it does keep up nicely. It is a very quiet unit. I like it so much, I am ordering another one.

Honest reviews on General Electric AST05LK 5,050 BTU Window A/C

Recommended for the price.

I bought this for the bedroom, and the great thing is the noise levels are very low. On the negative side it does struggle to get temperatures down, the room is probably slightly on the large size for it to cope, but it does enough to let us sleep at night just now, but will have to wait for the real summer heat to see then! Would not recommend it for a large room, but for a small room I would think it would be great.

Oh and as an aside, I bought this direct from Abt Electrics, they ship it for free! So save your self $40.

Bought this AC this summer for my 144 sq ft room. Performance has been very steady. It operates relatively quitely especially in the low fan mode. Although it takes about 15-20 min to cool the room, but then you cannot expect anything more from a 5050 BTU unit. No other problems with the unit after 3 months of use.

I purchased a LUX TX9000RF programmable thermostat as I wanted to be able to remotely control my AC and Heat from my bedroom for those times when I want to make minor temperature changes. The installation was easy, instructions clear, and this item works PERFECTLY. I threw out my old Honeywell setback thermostat as the Lux has several good default programs for saving energy. I highly recommend this unit for anyone who wants better control of AC or heat at odd times. One button on the remote resets the original settings or you can HOLD a certain temp for any amount of time. A++ quality. Well done, Lux.

This was one of the best purchases I have made. I was so tired of waking up in the middle of the night and having to walk downstairs to adjust the temperatute. This thermostat and remote control work exactly as advertised. The only slight difference I notice is that the temperature reading for the house does not seem to be quite as sensitive as my old thermostat, so sometimes you have to set it a little cooler than you would think to get it to click on. But a small price to pay for the convenience of not walking downstairs in the middle of the night. You will not be disappointed.

Best Deals on Lux TX9000RF Programmable Thermostat with Remote

This is a great unit--easy installation (about 30 minutes for a non-HVAC expert) and good directions. The remote has a great range--I operate it across a 3,000+ SF home with no problems. Multiple channels are available, so if you're like me, you can install multiple remotes to control multiple thermostats.

What heavily impresses me with this unit is how it conserves energy in a way that cuts my utility bill. When the air conditioning is activated (perhaps for the furnance, too--I don't know because it's September here in San Diego and I can wait to find out), the unit will spool up the compressor to cool the air and eventually turn off the compressor while still blowing.

In other words, you get the benefit of additional cool air while only paying for the fan and not the more energy-hungry air conditioner. I heard of this method of energy savings before but was highly skeptical on the actual benefits it would deliver. Suffice it to say that I'm now a believer.

Honest reviews on Lux TX9000RF Programmable Thermostat with Remote

Consumer Reports recommended the Lux TX9000RF Programmable Thermostat with Remote as a great value. We concur. Easy installation instructions provided and a video is also from Lux website.

Both my wife & I dreaded leaving our warm bed to turn up the thermostat on those cold winter mornings. This programmable thermostat solves this problem on a regular basis (pre-programmed times & temperature settings). On those mornings when we wake before the std. time, our remote control allows us to set the desired temperature without leaving the warmth of our bed. I wish that this product was available in Minnesota when I was a kid in the 1960's!

Happy & warm in North Carolina...........

This thermostat offers some pretty nice features. If you live in an environment that is prone to temperature and humidity extremes, as we do here in Arizona, then having a remote control is very handy for tweaking the thermostat's settings by a degree or two without having to drop your studies or get out of bed to do it. Since the remote is a radio frequency (RF) control, adjustments can be made from any room in the house. Walls do not interfere with signals that this remote control unit sends to the thermostat. When you adjust the thermostat using the remote control the unit automatically reverts to settings you have programmed as soon as the desired temperature has been attained. The remote also has a cancel button that allows you to revert to your programmed settings at any time.

This unit can save you quite a bit of money if it is installed in an appropriate place and programmed properly. The ideal place to locate a thermostat is 5 feet above the floor on a wall that is in an open area such as a living or dining room, which is not exposed to drafts. The thermostat needs to sense the ambient temperature of the room. If it is placed in a drafty location, the thermostat will not be able to properly control the temperature, because it will send false readings to your air handling unit.

The problem I was experiencing prior to installing this thermostat stemmed from the fact that the thermostat was mounted in a hallway, immediately beneath the return air duct for the a/c unit. Subsequently, the thermostat would sense a perpetual flow of heat in the air streaming past it and would send false signals to the A/C unit telling it operate much more than it needed to. On a 110+ degree day the A/C unit would run almost perpetually. Thus, coolant in the unit was not able to rest and adequately recover from the heat it was absorbing during protracted cycles.

The solution was 15 feet of 4-conductor #20 AWG (Solid Copper) cable from a hardware store, which I butt spliced to the cable that was originally installed in the wall. This allowed me to locate the Lux thermostat on a living room wall about 8 feet from the location of the old thermostat. This has cut the time my air conditioner runs by about 20 percent, and the nice thing about this thermostat is that it monitors the time that the air handling unit runs, by providing read-outs for hours and minutes utilized on a daily basis -i.e. yesterday, today, and the total for the month.

Lux has great customer service, so if you need help installing this thermostat you may well be able to do it yourself. Even if you need to pay an electrician for an hour, 20 percent off of a few $400+ electricity bills adds up pretty fast.

We ordered it in December so have had it 4 months now with no troubles. It's easy to swap out the bottles, and it's never given us any trouble. Hot/cold water on demand. It gets a lot of use in my employee break room with 7 or 8 people using it heavily, most of us tea drinkers. It's a great temp for tea plenty hot enough. We're very glad we got it and I'm only hoping that writing this review hasn't hexed it. :)

Great Foundue. I bought two of these at the time I ordered it. The electical cord is a little short but I could deal with that. I did a good job heating the cheese and clean up was very easy. I would buy another one. But I already bought two. I bought two for one reason. Holiday time. Keeping dips warm for holiday party's and one dipping fruit into white or dark choc.

My family of five loves fondue. I've owned maybe 4 different fondue sets over the last 20 years, but recently researched for what I thought would be the best fondue set available, within limits of cost. The CFO-1000 has everything I needed: Stable pot or legs, magnetic release electrical cord, Teflon coated, can use with cooking oil(not all fondue pots are designed for oil), very precise 10 point temperature control dial, heavy gauge aluminum pot, 3+ quart tank which will accommodate up to 8 fondue forks and completely, completely dishwasher safe! The lazy-susan is just a bonus and it really is a great lazy-susan. The legs that elevate this fondue pot are made from a high-impact type plastic and are very securely attached to the pot, which makes this pot unbelievably stable. This pot should realistically last a lifetime. Every part on this set, including the legs, heating control dial and electrical plug-in, are all individually replaceable. Heating element burns out...order a new heating element and not a whole new set. Good Luck!

Tired of not being able to keep oil or broth hot enough for meat fondue on traditional fondue pots, we switched to this electric and are very pleased. Fondue stayed hot through the whole meal, and when it got too hot, a quick turn of the knob lowered the temp very quickly. The forks were great quality too, though I wish they were a bit longer they are slightly short for fondue forks. If it came with 8 condiment/sauce dishes for the lazy susan, I'd give it 5 stars. There's plenty of room for more dishes, but no way to even order more as accessories. Also, the lazy susan tends to be a little difficult to turn it sticks at times. It's not a big deal, but if I were trying to improve the product, I would address that. Warning the cord is very short. It didn't matter to us, as we were using an extension cord anyway, but the cord is much shorter than I have ever seen on any kitchen item. Superb temperature control plus the lazy susan for access to sauces or dipping items make this a winner.

Pelonis Heater/Fan
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I have central heat, but for whatever reason by the time the air gets to the vents in my room, it's cold and my infant son sleeps in the room with me so I need it warm. The heater I was using (Lasko 6410 Designer Series Oscillating Ceramic Heater) only adjusts the thermostat in 5 degree increments but 70 let the room get to about 65 before it kicked on and heated the room to around 80 if I picked 75, so there was no happy medium.

From all the heaters I've looked at and the ones we have in the house (2 different models of Lasko oscillating ceramic heaters, which are digitally programmable but have annoying beeps, only have 1500w and 900w settings, no fan only setting, and cost almost twice as much), this is the best value. I personally do prefer a ceramic heater (I think they're safer and faster at heating a room), but I gave this one a try even though it's a fan-forced model because Pelonis is supposed to be a good brand and their ceramic heaters are expensive. I figured even if it only lasts a year or two that I will have gotten my money's worth out of it since it was so inexpensive.

This is the only space heater I've found that has a 600 watt energy setting and one of the few that has 3 (600w, 900w, and 1500w). Most only have 2. 1500 or 1200 seems to be the default and the ones that have an "energy saver" setting generally go to 900. The ones I've seen that go lower are over $50. Even though this heater is very compact, it warms up my 300ish square foot room set to a moderate temperature (can't set the thermostat for a specific temp) using the low energy setting.

For under $30 this is what you get with this heater:

-No plasticky new heater smell that needs to air out for 3 hours running on high in the garage or some other out of the way location (One of the Laskos had the smell but the other didn't)

-Cool touch housing -manual says it might get hot and that the air coming out might burn, but I've experienced neither even with basically constant use

-Overheat protection

-Auto shut off if tipped over

-600w low energy setting

-Fan only setting

-Adjustable thermostat

-Very quiet (the Laskos have louder fans)

-Very compact (less than 12" tall and approx. 9"x4" footprint)

-Element heats instantly so no waiting around while cold air is blowing on you

-Very effective at producing steady heat

-1 year warranty

-Carry handle in the back so it can easily be repositioned or moved to other rooms

Things it doesn't do:

-oscillate

-give specific thermostat settings (but I just discovered on mine that putting the thermostat in the middle of the 2nd lowest setting makes it turn on around 68)

Overall, this is a great unit. It does everything I need and I got it for about $26 including shipping. I would definitely purchase it again and I have already recommended it to my friends.

This is a great product. I have 2 Pelonis heaters. This one operates very quietly and has the advantage of using lower wattage settings than other similar heaters. Low operates at 600 watts which is the reason I bought this heater. It also has a thermostat which is nice. It doesn't smell like many ceramic heaters when they heat up. It produces uniform heat and doesn't blow really hard (the fan speed isn't really high).

Best Deals on Pelonis Heater/Fan

This fan replaced my old Pelonis fan that finally died after ten years or so. I like that it has three heat settings and an adjustable fan. The internal thermostat will kick it off when it reaches that stage. If it gets knocked off the surface that it's sitting on, it will cut off. It provides the instant direct heat that I wanted. It keeps my home office nice a toasty without me having to warm up the whole house by turning the main thermostat up. I would buy this fan again and again and again.

Honest reviews on Pelonis Heater/Fan

I purchased this portable heater to use in my 18 foot RV. This little unit works great. I can heat the entire RV in about 20 minutes. There is not a numeric temperature setting, but after a few uses you get an idea of where to set the knob to get to your desired temperature. There is also a fan setting that doesn't produce heat but would work to create some air movement in the summer and to act as "white noise". I'm a fairly light sleeper and the fan on this unit isn't loud enough to wake me at night when it kicks on. This little heater is light weight, portable, inexpensive and works like a charm. My biggest worry with a portable heater was the fire risk. I don't use this heater when I'm not around to monitor it. When I turn it off after it's been on all night, the counter top underneath of it isn't even warm to touch. The unit kicks off a good amount of heat but doesn't get too hot for me to pick it up by the built in handle. It operates quietly so I can use it while I'm watching TV or on the phone without difficulty. The cord is a good length to be able to place it a few feet away from other objects to avoid fire risk. Overall, I recommend this item. I purchased it through Amazon with my Prime membership. I bought it on a Wednesday and received it on Friday.

I bought this heater for work because I work in a very cold office. The heater works well enough, but it is noisier than the other reviews suggested. I guess it is quiet enough for the home, but not for a quiet office. It's also not very stable and falls over really easily. I will keep this one, but if I have to buy a space heater again, I probably won't buy this one.

I heat primarily by wood, but needed something to heat my living room and kitchen towards those mornings when the fire in the stove was almost out, because I would oversleep. I was skeptical, but decided to buy this heater, due to the cost.(more than 1/2 less than those other heaters) I set the temp. for 70 degrees and went to bed, sure enough I overslept again, and this time there was no fire in the stove at all, but yet it felt good in the kitchen. the Lasko heater had come on sometime during the night and the living room and kitchen were comfortable with an outside temp. of 10 degrees above zero. The thing I noticed was that even my bare feet felt warm. I have used this heater now for 3 months and am very pleased with it. I have noticed no more than a 23 dollar increase in my bill per month, but even with the cost of wood, or especially fuel oil or propane prices, 23 dollars is not much. I also like that the cabinet stays cool on the outside, and this is important when my grandchildren come over. I will be using this heater more in the spring, instead of starting the wood stove, because it works and works well. by the way I live in a mobile home...14x76 feet. Also please understand, if the temp. goes below zero, this is not a miracle heater,(to heat the whole home) but it still helps, and it also depends on the size of the rooms and the insulation in the walls and floor. I leave the heater activated at all times so it will turn on and provide supplemental heat whenever it is needed.

Bought this heater back in Dec. (from another store) to heat up a fairly large living room. The unit was a little smaller than I thought in would be once I took it out of the box, but I still thought it might do the job. I like the basic design of the unit with the curve blower at the top and it does blow a fair amount of hot air. However, I didn't feel that the air that was blowing out of it was all that hot. I have a smaller "personal" unit that seems a lot hotter. So, unfortunetly it didn't really heat the room up. I could only get the room temp to increase by 2-4 degrees no matter how long the unit was on for. It worked better as a personal heater in the room, but that's not what I bought it for. I do feel that this unit would work better in a smaller room like a bedroom, especially when you close the room up. You could have a nice toasty room in about an hour. The fan isn't to loud but it might be a little more noticable in a smaller room.

Bottom line, it's a great unit but it didn't really meet my needs in this case. Although it didn't really work for me, I think it would work great in a smaller enclosed area. I ended up returning the unit and then purchased the Optimus H-5300. Although this is a Quartz heater with no fan, it's a bigger unit and is by far, hotter. It takes a little longer to heat up the room (not much), but I can increase the room temp by 4-8 degrees.

I brought this heater home, plugged it in, and it ran on the high setting for about 5 minutes, constantly switching between low and high. Then, it shut off, and it would not turn back on. I unplugged it and let it cool for an hour or so, and ran it on the low setting this time. It stayed on, but was constantly switching on and off, and did not give off enough heat to heat a bathroom, much less a large room. I returned the heater and got another just like it. This one ran slightly better, but again shut off after 5-10 minutes and would not power back up. This thing is of no value. You'd have more success heating a room with your computer.

Best Deals on Honeywell EnergySmart Thermawave Ceramic Heater, HZ-860

This heater will heat up a room in a fair amount of time and keep it warm even if you have it on the lowest setting. This heater does not get hot or anything if you use it although the cord may get hot after a while.

I got this heater half price for $35 at Target a few days ago and yesterday it broke on me. I only used it for a brief amount of time each day just to heat up the room for approximately 3 days and it broke. The power indicator would light up but the control panel would not work no matter how I pushed it. It would occasionally come on and off flickering on and off. Basically I think the control panel area is defective so I will be bringing it back and getting a better model.

Overall: Good price, nice heat, bad build quality. Sort of loud on high setting.

Honest reviews on Honeywell EnergySmart Thermawave Ceramic Heater, HZ-860

Only things I wish it has a 3-prong plug with GFCI safety built-in, better sensor, and air filter. Also, I am not sure how good it is as a heater: the air it blows out doesn't seem to be hot enough to heat up a 20x20 room, at least not quick enough. I guess three Envi Heaters of 475 watts or four Econo-Heater running simultaneously would do a better job than just one of this 1500 watt heater. We'll see.

I bought this unit to replace the one on my Amana Model SRD21VW-P1315501WW. The refridgerator called out for a Defrost Thermostat R0161088 which is the same sensor unit with a large harness and several connectors which cost $34 and required running wires through the back wall of the freezer compartment.

My freezer kept getting stuck in a defrost cycle (ice cubes melt and then freezing back into a big chunk). To test, I cut the old one out of the existing harness, leaving about 4" inches on the thermostat. I then put the T-Stat in ice water to check for continuity and removed it to if it opened at around 40-50 degrees. The thermostat failed so I ordered this one as a replacement. Crimped on male and female connectors to the harness and the new thermostat and voila! My refridgerator was back in business.

Exactly what I needed. Amana fridge was building up frost/ice in the back of the freezer. After melting with a hair dryer, it worked okay for two weeks, then all the ice/frost built up again. The thermostat was not allowing the defrost heater to kick in (once a day) to melt the ice. This thermostat fit the bill and cost way less than calling a repair person. Identical to the original.

Over the years I have installed an attic fan in my house and in my garage. They do make a difference. I have replaced three of these motors since 1985. They probably were good but I didn't know it. These motors are open shaded pole 42 frame motors. They have an oiler wick in the front and rear. There are no bearings. Because of the heat in your attic, the wicks dry. They need to be oiled regularly. Who wants to climb into the attic with 110 degrees in the summer heat and oil your fan motor? Then again, don't they always fail in the summer? These motors, I discovered, don't burn out, they seize on the shaft due to lack of oil, the overload protector overheats, then it turns itself off. But alas, these motors can be fixed. Here's how:

Buy two of these motors to keep on hand. The price keeps rising so you might as well get them now. Attach some bright yellow plastic tape to the outside mushroom cover vent of your attic ventilator so when the tape is moving, the motor is on and running so you can see it from the ground. The next time your vent motor stops when it should be running, the tape will notify you then you'll have to climb into the attic to remove the motor. Remove the set screw on the motor shaft and the three bolts holding the motor to the bracket. Leave the fan blade. Disconnect motor wires from thermostat box and leave attic.

What we want to do here is replace the seized motor with the new one but attach longer wires to it and the thermostat box so we can replace the motor next time by removing the mushroom cover on the roof pulling the motor up and out, unplugging it and not have to go into a hot attic to do it again. I use 14 GA. male/female plastic covered push connectors on the wire ends so I can easily unplug them.

Your old motor can be fixed. Run a continuity test with ohmmeter on it. If it has continuity, the shaft/stator is seized. Remove the four bolts from the seized motor and separate the housing. The back part will easily separate. The stator will be seized to the front. Fill coffee can with WD-40 and soak front motor and stator for an hour. Remove and twist stator and front motor housing until stator separates. Clean stator shafts with 0000 steel wool, lube shafts with lithium grease and reassemble. Dun. zoz

This motor was in my attic for just under 4 years before it seized a month ago. My builder had put this in my new home, no doubt the cheapest thing on the market. I removed the motor from inside the attic, it wasn't fun but I got it out and was surprised at the small size and lightness in weight of the motor.

I could have replaced it with the same but went to Home Depot and they had one type of replacement motor on the shelf. In comparison to the original motor, it was about 2/3 heavier and longer but about the same in circumference. The replacement fit perfectly in the bracket in the attic.

The new motor quality appears far superior to the original I replaced. Also, it has sealed bearings and brushless in design. I am not sure of the Lomanco model having these features but I am guessing it doesn't. Regardless, the Lomanco model died in just a few years and quality motors typically last 20 years.

Won't know this product's worth for a couple of years until the bearings seize or the thermal overload protector pops and the motor quits operating. My luck so far with these motors has not been good they only last for a couple of years in the hot attic environment. They should be built/made with sealed ball bearings rather than sleeve bearings which dry out and cause the motor to seize. They also are very simple motors and should cost a lot less than the $49 price that is charged.

The only redeeming value is that the changeout of the old motor for the new one is a relatively simple operation.

I am completely satisfied with this purchase. The motor was easy to install and it only took about 20 minutes to install. I was about to get a roofer to install a new attic fan for around $350 but decided to see if the motor was available. After taking my old motor off, I did a search on the part number and was able to find the replacement motor with shipping for around $50. I also received the motor earlier than promised. .

I purchased the motor and a replacement thermostat and they were easy to install. Just in time for this latest round of heat wave. The comments on this page were very useful and helped me in deciding to change the motor myself.

I didn't even know you can change the motor and asked for an electrician to test and he said the motor was bad and was talking about getting a roofer to replace the whole system but reading the reviews here made me do it! Best of all I didn't pay $600 to get a new "lifetime" attic fan AND no one messed with the roof.

To do it yourself, unscrew the 3 bolts holding the motor, Use WD-40 to loosen the screw holding the blade to the motor shaft and then see if you can take the blade off. Mine didn't come out so I took the loosened blade and motor fan together and once on the ground I took a screw driver and hit at the motor shaft and the blade became more loose and then I was able to just take it out. Be careful not to damage the fan. Use soft ground if you're going to hammer the motor shaft.
