ive only had this thing for 4 days now and im already noticing some technical issues with it. first off the thermostat reads weird temps. it will say its 76 when i have it set to cool to 75, then when i bump it down to 72 for the night so i can sleep, the thermostat pretty rapidly shoots up from 76 to 80 degrees, not sure why it does that. i know its not 76 degrees in here when i come in to go to bed.. tonight i came in and turned it down to 72 and it was reading that its 73 in the room, wont kick on so i bump it down to 70 and it turns on, thermostat shoots up to 80 degrees then the a/c stopped running. i turned it off for a couple minutes and it seems to be doing fine now but all this up and down and wrong temp readings are kind of bothersome. i seem to be the only person thats reviewed this thing anywhere that has this problem with it. but when it works, it works great and as long as it cools and cycles on and off the temp reading isnt that big of an issue, but cycling off when i have it set to 70 and the temp is reading 80, thats a little weird. hopefully it redeems itself and stops acting so strange otherwise its going to have to go back.

Discount Honeywell RCT8100A 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

I bought two of these thermostats (one for each floor of the house) at Costco a few months ago for around $35 each. They installed quite easily. The instructions are thorough, well illustrated, and easy to follow. The unit allows you to program temps for 7 days of the week in 4 different periods of the day (ex. mornings, leaving the house, returning home, and evenings). I have noticed a definite savings in my electric bill since installing these units. No more cooling an empty house or coming home to a warm house in the summer. It even has a reminder indicator so you can change your filter. The temperature controls (up and down buttons) are located next to the large backlit LCD display. However, to access the setting buttons, you have to remove the faceplate. My only complaint is that the faceplate is not hinged to the unit or slides to the side. No big deal though as these controls are seldom used. Another reviewer here rated this thermostat 1-star entirely based on the faceplate. That's ridiculous! Unless you have hands like the Hulk, the faceplate is easily removed.

This is a great thermostat for saving money... seven day programable and easy to use... we share office space and it took everyone a few weeks to get comfortable with adjustments... it is simple and straight forward, all you have to do is read out of the book... i have recently ordered our second one for our hOMe... all the fuss over the cover-plate is just silly... yeah, it might not be like "easy" flip doors that you might be used to but all you have to do is slow down and exercise some patience and learn how the "New" one works... silly to knock a product because of some cosmetic issue you have... it is OK to mention design, but "How does the product WORK?" It is GREAT... like i said, it SAVES US MONEY!

Best Deals on Honeywell RCT8100A 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

The installation instructions for this model are uncharacteristically poor. Despite having installed similar units, I ended up puzzled and without air conditioning because of a mysterious unaccounted-for wire. The electrician who came out said ours was the second Honeywell RCT8100A that he'd rewired THAT DAY that they're popular because Home Depot and Costco carry them but the directions are "lousy."

The thing runs just fine now that the wiring is correct; the case and buttons are sturdy; the display is easy to read; the clock and programs are easy to set; the cost is moderate.

BUT users need to know something else, which I finally found online: With this model, if you turn the temperature up or down a bit (overriding the programming with a manual setting), it will NOT return to the programmed settings when the next time period starts. Other Honeywell models do, other brands do, and it seems clearly desirable that they should. Nevertheless, this model will retain your manual setting until you pry off the face plate and press "Mode" and make sure the little house icon is showing and not flashing in the lower lefthand corner.

So all in all, I'd suggest another Honeywell model. It's a good company. This model was just not their best effort.

Not sure which genius designed it....and who was the supervisor to approve production? This should win the worst product design of the year. Returning back to Costco ASAP.

This is the most awful thermostat avoid this unit. You will regret it, break it, then ultimately replace it despite the cash investment and sufficient feature set.

Before I begin, understand that my husband and I take care of our things. We maintain appliances, autos, shoes (etc) with great care, ensuring their usefulness long after their expected lifetimes. That said, we've had this thermostat a year and are today purchasing a replacement.

I just broke the front panel to this infuriating appliance. The design is flawed there is no natural release mechanism to get into the controls beyond the up and down arrows they are all behind the panel. To remove the panel, you pry it off with your hand. We've looked over it's design over and over, yet there is no means of safely removing the panel without prying it off with all 5 fingers. Worse yet, when it comes free, it resets and you are obliged to spend 10 minutes to reprogram the thing. Now we don't even bother we've given up.

It's absolutely awful. Spend your cash on any other unit even one that isn't programmable. This will save you more money than this terrible thermostat.

Worst fondue pot ever. Sure, neat grill & broiling abilities. ABSOLUTELY NO INSTRUCTIONS WHAT-SO-EVER!!!! Oil doesn't get near hot enough to cook meat. It has a setting 1-5, but no explanation for the tempertaures of 1-5. Might be good for cheese or chocolate, but don't get your hopes up. BTW, don't bother looking for the company that made this, I can't find a thing on it. I was hoping to find better instructions or some sort of customer service line, zilch. This heater is super strong and powerful. It's amazing how quickly it heats up my ENTIRE apartment. I've had 2 other small heaters and when I got this one I was seriously impressed with the quality. It's way stronger and warmer than any other heater I've had. I used it for about 3 winters and it was still going strong until my puppy chewed through the cord. Now I'm on the lookout for another one. I haven't been able to find this heater in stores so I'm going to have to purchase it online. We are using two of them to heat rather large rooms, thus reducing our reliance on the central heating system in our house. After purchasing and returning a cheap Mr. Coffee steam espresso machine that produced nothing close to a real espresso, I decided to get serious about finding a solid "entry-level" espresso machine. I did an exhaustive (ie: ridiculous) amount of research, reading reviews at a myriad of sites, comparing prices, talking to friends who consider themselves "espresso experts", etc. What I found first is that you will never find 100% agreement on a given machine. Second, you have to establish your price range. It does seem that with espresso machines, the more you're willing to pay, the more you get, either in features, design, longevity or performance. For me, despite my friend raving about his newest $700 "it does everything except read the paper to you" machine, as a first time home machine buyer, I wanted to limit my first expenditure. So I set a max budget at $250 and learned about every possible option.

I won't go through the reasons I didn't buy other machines and it is possible that many I chose not to buy would have been perfectly good. What I will tell you is that thus far, about 3 months and 100+ espressos later, I am extremely happy with my DeLonghi EC702. The bottom line is that it produces a perfect crema with a rich taste. The steaming wand, though not perfectly designed, works well and I can make excellent Lattes. I feel it is important to add that like any machine, it takes some practice to produce the perfect espresso. There are so many human variables that come into play how long to let the pump run, proper warm-up time, type of coffee, the grind, how much you compact/tamp the coffee, etc. that no two people will get the same results. However, the performance of this machine has been flawless. I have not experienced any leaks or problems. I have followed the instructions carefully from the first use, kept it properly cleaned and it has rewarded me with a great cup every day.

Some other positives:

Very good clearance between the bottom of the filter holder and the base. I have a nice size cappuccino mug (in addition to standard espresso cups) and it fits perfectly. Apparently this is a problem with some other machines.

Two size filters one for single shot and one for double shot espressos.

Filters also use the ESE pod system if you're into that. I don't use pods.

Large, easily removable and cleanable water holder.

It looks great. All silver, mostly metal. Doesn't have any of that cheap looking black plastic.

Warming tray on top really works. I store my cups and filters on top and they are nice and warm after about 15 minutes, which is the recommended warm-up time. And BTW this is not a problem. I get up, walk in the kitchen, turn it on. By the time I come back into the kitchen after getting the kids going, it is ready. Those people who complain because they have to wait a few minutes need to re-evaluate their addiction to coffee.

Great price point. Under $200.

Some notes:

Yes, it is somewhat noisy for the 15 seconds it produces the coffee but it is a pump machine, which you must have. My kids running around in the morning make far more noise than the machine.

Your first 5-6 cups will taste like battery acid. I was warned of this from an experienced friend. All new machines must be broken in to eliminate that metallic taste. So when you get it, after following the directions and running water through it a few times, then make several throw-away cups of coffee as well. I used a less expensive coffee for this instead of wasting my good stuff. Allowing the coffee flavor to permeate the filters will properly prep the machine.

You must clean it at proper intervals. The machine even comes with a bottle of descaler.

Buy an external tamper. It will make it much easier on you, help you be consistent in your tamping and will keep the machine cleaner. I bought the $8 Terry's Tamper on Amazon and it is the perfect size for the DeLonghi filter. Don't waste your money on expensive tampers.

Make sure you use the proper very fine grinds meant for espresso machines. I took one bag of beans to a grinder at Trader Joe's and set it to the finest grind, which I thought was great. However, I later bought a can of Illy pre-ground for espresso (a fabulous coffee by-the-way) and learned that my public grinding was nowhere near as fine. So my espressos improved even further using a better grind.

So there it is. I actually purchased mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond as a 20% off coupon brought the price down to equal the generally better Amazon prices, but also allowed me an easy, walk-in no questions asked return policy if I wasn't happy.

I hope this helps people. I felt I owed a review as thanks to all those whose reviews I leaned on. My final thought is that once you get hooked on making your own espressos, even with a good machine like the DeLonghi, you do start to see the value in the really expensive machines that are fully automatic and even grind the beans like my friends $700 gizmo. But for the regular guy who doesn't mind a little manual labor and doesn't have $700 to drop, I highly recommend this machine.

I have been making espresso at home for 30 years and have gone through 3 machines prior to purchasing the DeLonghi. The first was purchased in Rome in 1978 when home-brewed espresso in the US was a rarity. That machine lasted 10 years before the pump blew out and looking back it just made 'acceptable' coffee. I next purchased a Krups (from Amazon) and ran that one to death in 10 more years. It was a fine machine but not surprisingly, it did wear out. A good value for the price and I got a lot of service from it. Then I got a Braun which was totally serviceable for yet another 10 years....do these things all last 10 years? I guess so. When it was time to purchase another espresso maker, I chose the DeLonghi EC702. What a nice surprise! It heats up really quickly, and despite the owner's manual that says let it warm up for 15 minutes before you brew the first cup, I find you can get a perfect cup after only about 3 minutes of warm-up. Then, hit the 'milk steamer' button and in just one more minute it's hot enough to do the milk for a great cappuccino. The steamer nozzle is the first I've seen that can be EASILY dismantled (two small pieces to pull off) and rinsed. Former models had to be scrubbed with a scouring pad occasionally to scape off the residue left on the nozzle. This DeLonghi setup is far better and the steamer nozzle is always clean and ready for your next cappuccino. The drip tray (plastic with a metal grid) pulls off for easy cleaning too. Being a coffee-hound, I use the double-filter basket to make a single cup, although the photo shows two demitasse cups being filled side-by-side. Really, I'd recommend this machine without reservation. It's good-looking, easily cleanable, warms up super fast, quickly steams the milk to a lovely froth, and filling the water reservoir is a snap because it pulls out like a small drawer so you can squirt more water in from the sink's dish sprayer without needing to remove the entire reservoir from the machine (at least that's how I do it). A full reservoir makes about 4 good-sized cappuccinos with frothed milk before needing refilling. All in all, a GREAT machine at a GREAT price. Buy it!

Basically all of the negative reviews they did not read the instructions well enough. This thing kicks ass for a 15 bar espresso/cappuccino machine for under (...). Perfect crema, nice steam, cleans easily. Sexy stainless. Of course it doesn't have auto on-off... IT IS AN ESPRESSO MACHINE! The timing is different every time as the water pumps through, and how will it know if you are making a short, a double or if you want to turn it off early? If you are too lazy to push a single button to start and stop the pump, get a "Mr. Coffee" and quit whining that your appliance doesn't tie your shoes for you... The steam nozzle only leaks if you don't close it. If you don't put the lever back to the closed position all the way, yes, then water sprays out. When it is not in steam mode and the valve is open it sprays water, thats what it is supposed to do (for tea, etc.). It is not that complicated a machine, but common sense is uncommon to most people. It heats up fast, makes a delicious cup of cappuccino or espresso and cleans up easily. The warming rack on the top is designed well also. It makes me happy to turn this thing on in the morning. It prefers finely ground espresso, not espresso ground for drip machines or stovetops. If you are a "pod" person, you should be ashamed and really don't need this machine. This machine is for brewing a real cup with fresh grounds.

If you can work simple machinery and like espresso/cappuccino from freshly ground beans, get this machine and enjoy.

If you are a bit lazy and prefer everything to be automatic and are the type to use "pods", do not get this machine.

Honest reviews on DeLonghi EC702 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Maker, Stainless

I purchased this item 2 months ago and have been using it daily ever since. Previous posters were correct on the steamer wand (it IS a bit restrictive, I suggest purchasing one of the smaller frothing pitchers rather than a big one). Also, it *DOES* put out a lot of water through the steaming/frothing wand when you first turn it on, but you can get around that (more on that later).

It DOES produce a FABULOUS Espresso shot, Cappucino, Latte's, it tastes MUCH better than Starbucks to me and it only took me two attempts to get my technique down to where it's NOT a problem.

1. Loading coffee. I use half and half Lavazza in the can with the mark on it that has the Espresso picture and half any local bean ground to a #3 setting in the store my preference is for Blue Jamaican. Put the local ground half in FIRST, then put the Lavazza in on top of that.

2. Tamping. This is NOT a "press as hard as you can" thing. I use the double size grind basket, and a full scoop looks just SLIGHTLY rounded ABOVE the top edge BEFORE I tamp it, using a light "tapping" force like I'd knock on a door lightly. Tamp it LEVEL with the top of the basket, then use your finger to wipe around the EDGE of the basket top to get rid of the grinds that are on the edges where it will seal. Keeping the seal clear of grinds will prevent leaking.

3. Turning on the machine for warmup: I put it on STEAM first. This is important. Don't open the steam knob yet, just let it warm up and give you the green light in the STEAM setting. Put a towel under the steamer wand. Once the light is green, open the steam valve and watch the water come out of the wand for 5-10 seconds until it's all STEAM. This will purge the tube of water AND give you a nice warm steam rag to clean the wand AFTER you're done. When it's STEAM coming out, turn the valve back off and switch the machine to Espresso and wait for the light to go green again.

4. Brew Espresso as directed. It will LOOK like it's foamy coming out. Once it SETTLES in the cups for a few seconds, you will see it is mostly espresso with a nice layer of Crema on top (assuming you have the glass tumblers that are available on Amazon pretty cheaply worth it!) Don't worry that you have to manually turn it on and off, this takes about 30 seconds, just sit there and watch it, not a big deal.

5. Switch back to steam mode, wait for green light again. Put milk pitcher under frothing wand, froth your milk, then make your Lattte / Cappucino as desired. Hint: If you like a hot Latte like I do with a creamier taste, I microwave the milk first for a minute. This gets the milk up to temperature to where, by the time it's frothed LIGHTLY, with a minimum of water/steam added into the milk, it's hot.

All of the above takes me about 5-7 minutes.

All in all, I'm HIGHLY satisfied with this machine and would DEFINITELY recommend it. Heck, I bought one for my dad for Father's Day. :)

Pros: Brews excellent espresso with abundant crema, dual thermostats for brewing and steaming, two different sizes of filter holders, one of them allows you to use E.S.E. pods, good frothing, cup warmer, attractive look all at a good price.

Cons: Removable water tank not ease to reach in a tight counter space, I would have liked to see more flexibility in the frothing wand, the design leaves too little space both sideways and below to maneuver with the pitcher, cheap plastic, fragile looking bottom tray that contrast with an otherwise stainless steel solid body.

Although there are much better pump driven machines out there you may find out that the much higher price doesn't have much impact in the quality of the espresso and sometimes even in the quality or functionality of the machine. For a budget minded person, this is a good choice in its class.

Now a few words about the different espresso makers to help you make a choice. I have owned all three types.

The traditional stove top maker, pros: is cheap, last a lifetime with little care, keeps the coffee warmer longer, cons: it is messy, slower in comparison with steam driven machines and requires attention while brewing, doesn't make crema by itself and of course you need a separate frothing device for cappuccinos, size of the brew rigid you will need different sized machines to brew for just yourself or 3-4 people or you'd be wasting coffee. Still the most popular household machine in espresso loving countries and localities like Italy, Cuba and Miami.

Steam driven machines, pros: fast, inexpensive, durable, can be left unattended while brewing, integrated frothing wand, more flexibility in the size of the brew, cons: Espresso quality while similar to that of the stove top cannot match that of a pump driven machine, no crema, coffee gets cold fast.

Pump driven machines, pros: great tasting coffee with crema, integrated frothing wand and other convenient features, cons: always more expensive, lots of parts and electronics makes them pron to fail or wear much faster than the two other types, brewing requires full attention and some technique, the machine needs priming too so this are not machines for people on the run.

Finally, the quality of the espresso is in a good part a function of the quality of the coffee you use regardless of the machine, pump driven machines definitively give you a better tasting coffee all other things equal but requires you to learn some techniques and won't compensate for bad coffee.

However, I must say that taste varies. Some people here scoff at this or the other brand of coffee and recommend particularly expensive brands as a show of their taste and sophistication. Follow you own instincts and taste, experiment with different brands and techniques (grinds, degrees of roast, tamp strength) until you find the most satisfactory to you. Many will find out that good coffee doesn't necessarily have to be made and packed in Italy. I personally use inexpensive 30 cents an ounce or less Latin brands which suit my taste well for everyday use. When it fancies me I buy something more expensive for a gourmet experience. Bottom line, you don't have to break the bank to enjoy a good espresso just like you don't have to go every day to a gourmet restaurant to have a good meal.

I have owned this machine for more than two years of daily use and still running fine with all its original accessories. I have performed descaling with the recommended product twice. I notice a significant improvement in performance after each one even though I used filter water and in my area the water is not hard. In areas with harder water you may want to follow strictly the manufacturer recommended descaling schedule or do it more frequently. I also recommend to clean well the area outside and around the boiler removing the gasket as natural coffee grease accumulates and that may influence coffee taste as well as the boiler iteself. Same for the coffee holders.

I am a pretty big tech geek, and the smart home stuff has become a big interest for me recently. I can control my sprinklers and garage door from my phone/PC, and wanted to do the same with my thermostat. I had looked into the Nest and ecobee smart thermostats but both had limitations that held me back from actually buying them (see below). When I first saw this new Honeywell thermostat, it finally had everything I wanted and pushed me to actually go out and buy it.

Installation -

Very easy. You just need to remove your old unit, label the wires, and connect the wires to the new terminals. You absolutely need a C wire for this unit to work, as it needs power to keep the backlight and wifi connection on (or use the G-to-C workaround). Once powered & connected, setup is a breeze. You tell it your system type, and select your wifi access point (supports all security protocols). To connect it to Honeywell's site, you need to set up a free account there and enter your thermostat's MAC address.

The Android / iPhone App -

They already had the smartphone app developed for the 8580, and it is a sleek, solid, proven app, and the user reviews back that up (search "Total Connect Comfort"). But the 8580 was just ugly in comparison, and the monochrome "sorta" touch screen left plenty to be desired stylistically, even though the scheduling and other features worked great. So with this 9580, I finally have features, functionality, and a great companion app for my phone. The app is 100% reliable, has a very quick response time from sending a command and my system responding, and never crashes/force closes.

Now, why do I think this is better than a Nest? Some people value simplicity and minimalism, and in some cases I do too, but the Nest takes the minimalism too far. The screen basically shows the temperature, and nothing else. I was considering going from my ugly 8500 to the stylish Nest before this Honeywell existed, but never could actually do it because it seemed like it would be an overall downgrade, due to how little you can actually control from the Nest. Contrast everything I listed above that you can do from the Honeywell that you can't do on the Nest wall panel. I also think the schedule learning feature is garbage. I'd much rather tell my thermostat exactly how to be scheduled than hope it "guesses" correctly. And the Nest doesn't have a Hold Temperature option, which is a feature even a $25 thermostat has. The final Nest deal-breaker for me is the +-3 degree temperature swing. If you set it to 72, it will keep the temperature between 69 and 75, a total of 6 degree swing, which sucks compared to the +-1 degree swing of the Honeywell. The higher swing would save energy *in theory*, but I would just end up setting my temperature even lower than usual to make sure it doesn't get too hot in the summer, negating the potential savings. You can programmatically make your own temperature swing if you want to save energy, so I am not a fan of the Nest forcing it on you.

Honeywell RTH9580WF vs ecobee EB-STAT-02

I was close to buying the ecobee before this Honeywell was announced. It has most of the things I liked about the Honeywell, and none of the drawbacks of the Nest. But what broke that deal for me was 1) an even higher price than the identical price points of the Nest & Honeywell, 2) not all features available on the wall panel were available on its app (and vice-versa), and 3) it was a 2-wire solution which means setup is more of a pain, since you have to wire stuff down by your furnace to facilitate a lot of the functionality. So basically the Honeywell has all of the positives of the Nest and ecobee, but none of the negatives.

Summary -

Pros:

Great app (quick, responsive, reliable, feature-filled)

Great website

Love the ability to customize your color scheme

Indoor & Outdoor temp/humidity reads very accurately

Circulate setting

Great scheduling options & control from the app, website, and wall unit

Super easy installation

So at this point you can gather I'm very happy with this thermostat and would highly recommend it. But it's not perfect. Here are some very minor things that perhaps Honeywell could address in a future version:

Cons:

You can't save custom color schemes, 3-8 custom save slots would be awesome

You can't edit the current custom color scheme; to make a slight change, you have to start from scratch

No wifi-only mode, which would allow you to maintain remote control of the thermostat if your internet, or Honeywell's servers, are ever down (my Samsung smart TV app can control my TV over wifi without talking to a Samsung server, for example) to clarify, you are still able to control your thermostat from the wall unit if there is ever an internet connectivity issue

You can adjust the inactivity brightness on the wall unit, but not the active brightness

A great feature would be to tie inactive brightness to your heating/cooling schedules, so you could tell it to go to brightness 1 when sleeping or away, to reduce power consumption

No auto-login option on the app

No remember password, or auto-login option on the website

Web address is impossible to remember (https colon slash slash rs.alarmnet dot com/TotalConnectComfort/Home/), not usually a big deal since you can bookmark or google it, but how hard would it be for Honeywell to use a simpler address like "myhoneywell dot com" instead (just checked, it's not even being used at the moment) it would also be nice to be able to access the device through your home intranet by just navigating to the device's IP address in a web browser, like I can on my sprinkler controller, which would again reduce dependency on Honeywell's servers or an internet connection in general

The pro-install (2-wire) version of this thermostat comes in white, black, and silver. This consumer version only comes in the worst of those three options, silver (really a 2002-era color). White/black options would be great!

Ability to control the circulation sensitivity would be nice. So you can adjust up/down from Honeywell's stated default of 35%.

Ability to control the temperature swing. I like the +-1 degree swing personally, but just in case any of the Nest fans enjoy its inferior +-3 degree swings, why not just make that a user-selectable setting from 1 to 5 degrees in each direction, and let the user decide what's best?

To conclude, this is an awesome thermostat, and the very trivial cons would reduce its score to about 98/100. While not perfect, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, this places it at a very solid 5. The price is a little high, but identical to the significantly lower functionality of the Nest, and a lower price than the ecobee. So it is absolutely the best value currently on the market for smart thermostats, and I have not regretted my purchase for even a second.

I purchased the Honeywell RTH9580 wifi thermostat and the install was a breeze! I have a mid 2000s home and the deinstall and reinstall of this unit could not have been any easier. Basically I took the old case off, labeled the wires with the provided stickers the new unit provides, then plugged in said wires into new unit and it fired up with around a 20 minute install time. I tested the air and heat and it worked great, the unit looked amazing and was almost the same size as my old outdated white non touch screen thermo. I quickly deinstalled and grabbed some paint and touched around the edges and it was then seamless. So far so good!

There is a large yellow button on the unit that says 'Register online for remote access' i pushed that button on the unit and it did nothing so i went online to their mytotalconnectcomfort.com site to register and i filled out my information. After pushing the submit button to submit all my info the page tries to do something then after about 10 minutes it times out. I called up the toll free line and it immediate asked if i was a wifi thermo customer and i pushed 1. This made me think that something was up with the unit or the site since this appeared to be the main honeywell support hotline. I immediately got a tech which was great, gave him my info and told him the trouble of the site nor unit going online. He alerted me that it was in fact an alarmnet.com problem and it has been down since Thursday August 8 2013 and today is Wednesday August 14th. He said they were working rapidly to get this fixed and that it was in fact a major outage. I asked him that if I had been out of town and trying to control my thermo remotely (which is the whole reason I purchased the unit) that I would be unable to and he replied that was correct I would not be able to control it via the app or online.

This appears to be a major concern and I will wait a couple more days to see how it goes and so far my review of the unit is outstanding and I love the looks, functions, feel and aesthetics. With that said a whole portion of the unit still has the yellow button looking for online access so its not nearly functional.

Tech support was great, unit looks and works great however the alarmnet which is intrical to its function is the only negative i have found thus far. I would rate this 5 starts if the online/remote functionality was working.

I will not be able to write as outstanding review as J. Van Wagenen did, but I will say I am very pleased with the Honeywell RTH9580.

I wandered into Lowe's to try and convince myself I wanted the Nest, to find they had replaced the display with this new Honeywell. Having read Wegman's review, I felt it was worth an installation and I could always return it if I didn't like it. I have no plans to return it and -in factreturned to the reviews here to see if he discusses whether or not additional thermostats can be controlled from the app (he says they can). So, after submitting this, I'm heading back to Lowe's to get one for my upstairs pump.

I rated it four stars only because it does not seem to be actually activating on the set schedule. I can set the schedule on the unit, website and the app but the unit doesn't appear to actually respond to that schedule. However, I'm certain there is just an issue I need to to resolve and I'm happy (for now) with being able to adjust it via my app (from which it responds within seconds). I'll uprate and update this review if/when I can get it to mind the set schedule.

Follow-up (12 August):

Okay, a few notes, now that I've had this for about 5 weeks (both are now installed). I'm going to keep it at 4 stars, though I will say it verges on receiving a 5th. I went on vacation for two weeks and the power was apparently disrupted, resulting in alerts to my inbox informing me the thermostats had lost connection. However, the downstairs one (closest to the wifi signal) quickly recovered and I was able to monitor it remotely again. The upstairs one never did recover the signal (which was odd...I guess it stopped looking after a certain point). However, because it had the vacation schedule, it was fine and apparently stayed the course (it just couldn't tell me its status).

One irksome issue: The connection with the wifi is frequently lost (I'll say once every two weeks). The system is NOT dependent upon the signal and more often than not, it will reacquire it. However, on the unit itself an orange alert box will inform you that the signal was lost (at some point). Unless you reset the connection (whether it needs it or not), typing in your router password again, the orange alert will only go away if you tell it to remind you of the past signal loss at a later date (defaults to 7 days). Often, I'll do that, rather than root out my router password. I /suspect/ that getting on the web (via your PC, not the app) and updating the schedule itself will resolve it too, but I wish I could acknowledge the 'lost signal' event (especially if it self-recovered) directly from the unit and move on.

One other quirk: these thermostats are trying to learn when to turn on the AC so that the desired temperature is reached at the time you've set. I have to admit I was rather concerned when my upstairs AC was trying to reach my nighttime temperature hours (close to 2.5 hours) before it was set to, but I just recalled that -unlike 'dumb' thermostats that come on at the pre-arranged timethe Honeywell unit wants the space to be at the correct temperature at the pre-arranged time. I've been playing around with temperatures so much since I got it, it hasn't had time to learn this, so I'm training myself to leave them alone in the late afternoon. Hard to do when the app on your phone allows you to constantly monitor the system from anywhere.

Note: the thermostat does have a vacation calendar. You can set it it up well in advance, so that it's set and you can forget about it. I found it to be reliable. The downside is that, once the unit is on vacation settings (i.e., operating within the dates and times set), you cannot remotely change it, only monitor it, not even via the web. You can only take it off vacation setting or change the the temps from the unit itself.

In conclusion, I'm satisfied with these units. I haven't had them long enough to say whether or not they're more efficient than our previous method of manually changing the temperatures when we left the house or when we felt uncomfortable, but I really do appreciate how easily customizable (up to four settings each individual day of the week) the schedules are. I'm thinking if they show they do save us money (when I stop fidgeting with them), it will probably earn that 5th star.

Fill your thermostat wire hole!!! I had a problem with this thermostat overshooting by 5 to 6 Deg F. I had been blaming the unit and had replaced it three times with a new one. Honeywell customer service just kept sending me new ones... Yesterday I found a small draft coming out the thermostat wire hole blowing air into the back of my new Honeywell Thermostat. Filled the hole with wadded up toilet paper and the issue was solved. Other units have more of a solid back plate which is why I hadn't experienced the problem before. This unit has an open back plate where the wire comes through to allow the spreading of the conductors for termination, allowing that air from the wire hole to affect the measurement. After putting this unit in, my AC was running excessively and keeping the house way too cold. Now after filling the wire hole, this thermostat is ON THE MONEY. Now, if I have it set at 74 degrees, the AC comes on while the unit still reads 74 degrees and shuts off while the unit still reads 74 degrees. Probably has a half to 3/4 of a degree dead band. Far cry from the 5 or 6 degree overshoot I was seeing before. Hope I can help other people resolve this issue and not incorrectly blame this unit for overshoot. This turned out to be an EXTREMELY nice thermostat!!!

At least have the Nest send an email alert like HONEYWELL'S new color display wifi thermostat. I have a nest and a new Honeywell Wifi color display thermostat. I purchased both to see which one I like better. I'm probably going to return the Nest because it doesn't have the email alerts like the Honeywell. With the Honeywell, you have options of being alerted if the temp reaches a certain level that you set, it will email you when the unit resolves the temp, will alert you if the humidity reaches a certain level that you set, and can email you when it's time to change the filter. Now that alone is awesome. Those simple little email alerts is what will make my decision. I live in Florida where it's hot and humid almost all year round. We rely heavily on AC. So if for some reason the unit goes out or stops producing cold air, the Honeywell will email me. With the nest, I would never know unless I was constantly looking on my phone or the internet for changes, I like that the Nest will automatically figure out your user schedule and I like the design of the nest better. The Honeywell has only 4 set points to make temp changes throughout the day. That's the only drawback with this thermostat. The nest would be the BEST thermostat on the market if it had the other options like the Honeywell does. The Honeywell also displays the current date and time, outside temp, outside humidity, and inside temp and humidity. Plus you can change the color of the display to match what ever color wall you have. Pretty cool, but the Nest is smarter in that it does all the programming (scheduling) for you. I like that the Nest gives you a time on how long it will take to reach a certain temp, but with the lack of other important features that everyone else seems to be chatting about, and wishing the Nest had, I'm going to return it and buy another Honeywell. I'll buy buy the Nest when these other features are added.

I just purchased this fridge for my "Man Cave" and I am very happy with the purchase. The fridge is great for the retro look. I purchased the black model and it is the color of "flat black" not polished which resembles the look from this era. The handles are plastic and held to the door with four screws so they are very sturdy. All decals on the door are from stickers and could be ripped off without proper care. All these things that are not well made are just cosmetic and have nothing to do with the functionality of the fridge itself. The freezer is good size and gets very cold. The fridge has all the compartments you would need from a 3.1 cubic feet fridge, which is a great size for any dorm or bar fridge. The fridge runs very quiet for you can barley here it when it's on. The regulator is very easy to read and easy to use. The light is nice and bright and I was very surprise to see a light inside a very small fridge. I bought this heater for my living room. I have central heat and air, but this helps me save money on my heating bill. It's slightly more expensive than other ceramic heaters, but it has an air purifier and a remote control. None of the cheaper ceramic heaters have those features. You don't realize how handy the remote control is unless you have owned an electric heater without one. You can make minor adjustments to its thermostat with the remote control. You can adjust the thermostat from 64 to 90 degrees. It has a big, bright LCD display on the front that shows the temperature and other information. Many people seem to prefer those electric oil-filled heaters, but some of them can take forever to heat up a room. This heater produces a lot of heat quickly. It's rated at 5,200 BTUs. A small air conditioner has a rating of about 10,000 BTUs. It also has the ability to automatically alternate between high and low power when it's in AUTO mode. It doesn't always use 1500 watts of electricity because of that. Sometimes it will only use 950 watts if a room is already warm. The Sunpentown SH-1508 is the best electric heater I have ever owned.

I would have to give this rating a one star unfortunately. THe heater while in itself is a great cost you must be warned of the manufacturing of the product itself. I have two of these heaters purchased within a few weeks of each other. One worked well, we were so pleased that we ordered another (my roomies and myself) unfortunately the first one came broken, making a horrible clicking sound and the company (SPT)has refused to help. Amazon did send a replacement for the first and then the second one arrived making an horrible buzzing noise. Amazon was not willing to replace this one. Today is the 8th week of owning both the heaters. THe first one's face plate caught fire today because of poor wiring used in the assembly of the heater, and the second one I am afraid will do the same. This product almost set fire to my house and everything that we own.

I cannot reccomend this product to anyone. Although the price is fine (money wise) is it really worth risking far much more than sixty something dollars if it costs you your life? I do not think so. I am so upset by this that I will write to amazon.com today strongly recommending that this product be removed from their site. Because if three products have thus far been malfunctioning who knows how many more of these are out there will similar situations. So far I have found over 200 similar stories about this product. This machine is larger than many ceramic models but nice looking and heats very well. The fan is very quiet. I like that you can use it as a fan without heat as well. My only complaint is that the blue LCD that tells the temperature does not dim or shut off and is VERY bright. Too bright for a bedroom. Really lights it up. I'll be looking for some way of safely masking it. Otherwise very nice but hope it lasts.

OCTOBER 08' UPDATE:

2 California coastal winters (mild and short) and it's dead. Well not dead, but working erratically (noisy, not shutting off when the room reaches the Auto shut off temp, ...) No longer safe or usable.

For the bright light, I masked it with electrical tape. Safe and effective.

After reading dozens of reviews on dozens of heaters, I gave up and ordered what looked good. So far, I very happy with this one. Although assembly was indicated, it came fully assembled. It heats my son's bedroom (10 x 12) in very short order and it takes the chill off my living room (16 x 22). I switched to a pellet heater as my primary fuel and there are some areas of my home that just stay cool. I'm confident this will do the job on all but the coldest of days (Mid-Michigan). The directions are easy to understand and the remote is simple to use. The only drawback is the LED panel is super bright for my sleeping preference (great nightlight for a kid) and when the timer (max 7.5 hour) shuts the unit off, it seems to erase the preset room temp. It then defaults back to 75 degrees. Could be I haven't figured it out yet but either way, that's a minor thing to me. Overall, I think I got a good deal on a good heater.

I used two of these this last spring, and I was extremely happy. My previous year, I used another system for heat, and I had problems with overheating and heat retention.

For those who reported problems with seedlings growing too fast or falling over and dying, I would like to know the larger picture--did you address the potential problem of damping off? And did you provide a grow light at the appropriate height?

I researched several options to address damping off, since that was a huge problem for me last year. I microwaved all of my moistened starting mix, roughly 10 minutes per 2 quarts of moistened soil. If you bake this in an oven, I recommend 30 minutes at roughly 350 degrees. I also bleached and washed any pots that had been previously used. After the seedlings emerged, I sprinkled cinnamon on the surface, and I had no problems with damping off. I was particularly concerned about damping off since there was quite a bit of condensation inside the domes. However, I cleared the condensation at least twice daily, and I did not lose any seedlings out of roughly 150 starts. This was on top of 100% germination, so I gave away lots of starts this year!

I used these for squash, peppers, tomatoes, herbs, eggplants, some flowers, soybeans, shiso, chard, and cucumbers. After transplanting starts into larger pots, I continued to use the heating pad and base for the larger pots. I also had simple fluorescent grow lights that I maintained at proper heights for the plants. You should keep the lights within 2" of the plants, or the plants will be reaching too far for light and will become spindly--a particular problem for tomatoes. For these units, you really need a 4-bulb grow light or the starts on the edges will not receive sufficient light. I had to search around but found a 4-bulb, 4' shop light for a grow light, and I was thrilled with the coverage over these units. No need to buy "grow lights", just alternate cool and warm wavelength fluorescent bulbs.

Because of an unusually cold spring and early summer, I kept my peppers and eggplants inside until mid-June, and a few of them were already blooming and looking extremely healthy. The tallest were roughly 8" tall. The heating pads were wonderful for the peppers and eggplants in particular, but I know the squash also germinated much better because of the heat.

I strongly recommend not using the seed starting mix that is designed for peat pots, unless you use the peat pots in your units. If you use the peat pot starting mix, it will fall all over the place and away from the roots when you pull out your seedlings to transplant them.

Sure, you can make something similar to this with off-the-shelving parts, but I am not commenting on alternatives, just commenting on performance of this system. I highly recommend it but only if you provide appropriate grow lights and address potential damping off.

Although it may seem a little over priced, it is the convenience that you pay for. The product is exactly what it shows, a plastic tub with a plastic top, plastic dirt moldings, and a heating pad. If you think about the price of the heating pad that fits perfectly with the container, it is well worth the while.

In addition, I have had success with this product. I grow indoor coffee, and I have received a much quicker germination rate; as well as being healthier. Furthermore, it gives you great control of not only temperature, but humidity. In my opinion, that is a major plus.

First, when the package says it comes with an insert, that means the 72-cell tray you put potting mix in, not the potting mix itself.

Second, you're supposed to take the clear plastic lid off once your plants germinate. That's why there's no room for the seedlings to grow under it. (Though the packaging does feature a tray full of robust seedlings under the lid, which may confuse people who can't be troubled to read the instructions.)

With that out of the way, this product does exactly what it promises. The heat mat warms the tray a bit, but not too much. The tray's cells are the right size for tiny seedlings, the kind that need a heat pad, and soft enough that you can pop the seedlings out without much effort.

The whole contraption fits perfectly under the Hydrofarm JSV2 2-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System. If you buy a Hydrofarm TM01715D 7-Day Digital Program Timer, you can plug both the light and the heat mat into it to have the 14-hour light-warm/dark-cool cycle most seedlings enjoy. These three products together make a great indoor seed starting set-up.

For a backyard farmer or gardener who needs to start a bunch of seeds at once, this will do the job.

This item is essentially a plastic base and clear top (very flimsy) with a heating pad that the base sits on. It's adequate for starting plants from seed, but my main complaint is that for what you get, it's way too expensive. I believe a fair price for this item would be around $20, NOT $40. If you do decide to purchase a germination station like this one, buy the one with the taller top it doesn't take long before the new plants start running into the 2" tall lid.

I bought this kit because of the price was about $40 and there was no shipping charge. Now I am just using the heat mat and tray to coax fig cuttings to root. Late winter I will reinsert the planting cell tray and the clear lid to germinate other small cuttings and garden vegetables. The station and mat are standard size and weight. Although I bought this item from Home Depot, it's still the same product at the same price. I'm so satisfied with it, I want to let others with baseboard heating nightmares to know there is a reasonable solution.

If you have baseboard heat, you probably have trouble maintaining a comfortable temperature without constantly messing with the thermostats.

My old non-programmable termostats (tried 3 different models) were never accurate (off by up to 10 deg) and I had to hang thermometers beside them to keep track.

This product ALWAYS warms the room to the tempurature I set it.

The programmable feature allows me to turn it down at night and during the day.

I can literally set it and forget it.

Also too, with a proper program set, I nolonger have to run it all night and day, using less electricity and saving me money.

And with a push of a button I can turn it up or down, on-the-fly.

The next programmed time will set the temperature back on schedule.

There is a "manual mode" if you prefer the temperature to stay the same throughout the day and night.

I'm planning on buying more of these to put in all my first level rooms.

But at $50 each, I'll change them out one at a time.

(The non-programmable version is around $35.)

Installation is easy and can be done in 5 mins.

Took me less than 10 mins to figure out the 7 day program function and get it the way I wanted.

With a built in digital temperature gauge, you won't have to hang your own.

Bottom Line...

The RLV430 just makes sense (and cents). It really works well.

It's very easy to use and install.

I can recommend this item with full confidence that it's one of the best thermostats available for baseboard heated homes.

I did my homework and shopped around for thermostats. I wanted a digital one with the ability to program weekdays and weekends. I have minimal experience with wiring let alone electrical. I went to HomeDepot and purchased this very same model for the same price. Decided to buy three as I needed one in each room. If I can install one in the dark with a flashlight while my family was asleep anyone can do it. Just remember to read the instructions to a "T", if you dont and have cadet wall heaters you will find out why when it cycles over and over once you hit the target temp. I made this mistake and read the instructions. Wiring is very easy for this unit, programing was even easier. Dont even have to read the book for that. I've had the unit for about 4 weeks now and love them. I can program each room to what I want, so I dont run it when no one is home and dont have to worry about my roommate leaving it on when they leave since they dont care. All in all I highly recommend this unit to anyone.

We have a vacation cottage in an area with very cold winters. The cottage has baseboard heat which was governed by an old dial thermostat installed in 1990. We leave the heat set at 50f when we are not there during the winter, and the heating bills have been very high. When we are at the cottage during the winter then we have had problems keeping the temperature comfortable (too hot or too cold despite the dial thermostat setting)

This Autumn we installed this thermostat in the living room and used the programming features to keep the house at 50f when we are not there. When we are there we us the programming features to keep it at 68f during the day and 60f at night. This device worked so much better than our old dial thermostat. It was MUCH more accurate than the the dial thermostat and kept the temperature much more even.

Despite the increased price of energy, our heating bills this winter were 20% lower than any of the previous three winters, and I attribute a great deal of that savings to this device, its accuracy, and the ability to program it to vary the temperature settings during the day and night.

I bought two of these units recently one for a standard electric baseboard and one for a forced air electric wall heater (Cadet style). I have been very satisfied with their performance so far.

Installation was very quick after reading the instructions it took about 15 minutes between flipping the breaker off to flipping it back on. I think the hardest part was fitting the wires back into the electrical box (the existing wires were very stiff).

Programming was intuitive, but I'm happy for the instructions on the inside of the door. I'll probably need the reminder if I need to reprogram and I appreciate not having to dig out the little instruction booklet. So far it's been set it and forget it with these thermostats. I did tweak the programming a couple days after installation, but since then I haven't touched them unless I'm especially cold.

Mostly I'm happy that I no longer have to worry about forgetting to turn the heat down especially at night. I'm also happy to have a warm room when I wake up, and a warm kitchen when I go out to make my morning coffee. In the past I would wake up early just to turn on the heat in preparation for my actual wake up.

For the wall radiator I like the throttling feature. On especially cold days and nights it keeps the radiator on at a low level, which alleviates the temperature peaks and valleys (and the one hour warm up time) I used to experience.

For the forced air fan My old thermostat's thermometer was off. It was reading 10 degrees colder than reality, so I could never really tell if the room was cold or if I was just being a baby. The new thermostat's thermometer is accurate (turns out I was just being a baby before). The fan function on the thermostat allows some leeway +/your desired temperature so the fan doesn't cycle. No throttling on the fan function for obvious reasons :)

The one negative, and you may have seen it mentioned before, is the lack of a backlight. It's not the missing backlight itself that's the issue (for me), it's that Honeywell advertised this unit as having one, when in fact it doesn't. I was aware of that when I bought the unit, but Honeywell hasn't updated their literature to reflect this. Meh.

After reading some of the negative reviews, I was hesitant to purchase these units. I don't want to discount anyone else's experience, but I would like to address some of the complaints that have resulted in negative reviews because I think they are unfair and don't represent the quality of the product.

I read all the reviews on Amazon for this thermostat. I also looked up a few more online before deciding to purchase. After reading the reviews and the COMPLETE instruction booklet, this was my experience:

* No sparks

* No explosions

* My forced air fan does not cycle on and off every 5 seconds

* I understood BEFORE I purchased that there would be no backlight.

* I have never once needed a magnifying glass, flash light or pencil tip to make adjustments (as long as the room is lit, I can see the screen fine and the buttons are plenty big for regular finger tip pushing).

I understand these units are a few years old and some of these resources/installation tips may not have been available before. I also understand that there are some lemons that make it out to market. I just don't like seeing a good product dumped on because uninformed buyers or buyers that never bother to read the manual. Give yourself a 1 star review, not the product.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase I saved $8 per unit by ordering from Amazon instead of my local big box, they were very easy to install (by me, someone with very little electrical installation experience), they are one of the few programmable thermostats designed to be installed by DIYers, and I've already felt "comfort" benefits from having programmable thermostats.

I would recommend them to a friend and I'll also be buying more for my house as my budget permits.

We had baseboard heating put into an add-on room that we thought we'd

use only three seasons... but actually use year round. The cheesy 'comfort zone' thermostat that was originally installed gave us heat but no real control. And because electric heat is so expensive, the programmable set back is awesome. We so often forgot to turn it down when we left the room in the past. This thermostat keeps the room at a precise temperature, something we didn't think possible with baseboard heating. It's worth every penny, and will probably pay for itself in the first year. We've been using it less than a month, but knew within the first 48 hours what a great thing it was. We should have bought it five years ago... but didn't realize you could get one for electric baseboard heat.

This refrigerator is the perfect mini-fridge!

This is bigger than the average mini-fridge, but it is small enough to store in small places. I have it in my bedroom.

It has two and a half shelves inside, and two mini-shelves on the door (one of which is fitted perfectly for a 2 liter bottle of soda).

The freezer is perfect, too. It keeps things frozen, unlike some other mini-fridges out there. It also comes with an ice cube tray. I have kept ice, ice cream, and Italian ice in the freezer, and they all stay frozen. I use dipping tobacco, and I also use the freezer to store my dip in to keep fresh. It is perfect. Keeps things frozen, and has a mini door so the food in the actual fridge doesn't get frozen. Works without any flaws.

Inside the fridge, there is a thermostat. It goes from 1-7 (I keep it on 7), and off. This way, if you are going away and have nothing in the fridge, just turn it off.

It has a nice, simple design. I have seen people give it bad reviews, but I have no clue why. It's perfect! If you are looking for a nice mini-fridge, this is the way to go! You won't be disappointed.
