I bought this unit for my friend for her birthday and then my husband surprised me with one for Christmas.

LOVE IT! We keep it stocked with Pinot Noir at a perfect 55 degrees. We have not experienced any malfunction of the unit and our friends is working perfectly as well.

The blue interior light (with on/off switch) is very sexy and gives it a sleek look. Contrary to the look in the picture, the casing is actually a silver tone-not white. The size is perfect, and it fits very nicely on our counter above our liquor cabinet.

Super quiet too, you can barely hear it running when it cycles on.

Best Christmas present ever!

UPDATE here we are 01/01/2013 and it's still going strong. LOVE IT! (and yes, our friend's cooler is running perfectly too).

Ok, I should not have posted that update. 2 weeks later the thing crapped out. I had simply turned the interior light on (which I almost never do) and the next day I noticed the temperature was reading 65 degrees nearly 10 degrees warmer than it should have been. The next day it was up to 70.

Needless to say we just unplugged it and have not tried starting it up again, but I am looking for replacements now...

BOO!

Although this wine cooler is attractive-looking and compact, it is very unreliable. I've had mine for only a few months before it started acting up. Every time I pressed the temperature gauge downward to make it cooler, the worthless piece of metal only got warmer instead! That's insane.

Avoid this product.

I have owned this wine cooler for about 4 months and after only

1 month I had to return it for a replacement because it would no

longer cool it just stayed at room temp. After another month of

having my replacement it also won't cool any more. It is very

quite when running but after about 1 month they don't cool at all.

It's hard to keep you wine lasting long when your cooler is at 75 degrees

fahrenheit.

Honest reviews on Danby DWC620PL-SC 6 Bottle Wine Cooler - Platinum

My Matre'D wine cooler went bad just after four (FOUR!!!!) months. The worst part is that the manufacturer (Canadian based) refused to fix it, replace it or even discuss the issue. If you are looking to buy a wine cooler, Matre'D brand is not it. Its a Trabant (or UGO) of wine coolers.

In the small cooler department, this is the best. But, it is not without issues. I bought this model because it was the only one that claimed the ability to get down to the very low temperture that I like for my white wines. What they did not tell me is that it can only get to that temperture if you also run a "cold house". If you keep your house down below 65F you get to the low temperture advertised. It is also sort of loud in a small space. However, having said all this, I would most likely still buy the productd again.

i unwrapped the heater, made sure it was on 0 as per instructions, started to put the plug in and there was a loud POP!, burning smell, part of the metal part of the plug melted and it was blackened. didn't even get the plug in more than a centimeter. wasn't the socket, b/c that still worked (for my air conditioner--a dedicated outlet) right after. am sending it right back! it really should be given zero stars.

Sending it back. A little bit too audible of an air flow sound for my cubicle environment. Should be fine for home use.

Hi. I bought this Boston Ceramic Space Heater, black (25962) October 13, 2012. It quit workinhg on HI about a week and a half ago. (Until then it worked very well). That's about four months of being happy with the product. I had a milk house heater type that worked very well for years. So I almost bought another one. I should have. Don't buy this Boston ceramic heater. I am exceedingly disappointed! Thanks, Richard

It was a little smaller than what I had anticipated, but it is perfect for my small bathroom. I don't have ventilation in the bathroom, and this heater dries out the humidity in it.

I had purchased a similar product in the past from another company and wanted to give one as a Christmas gift. This company was less expensive and offered the same great quality. I would definitely order from them again!!

I own this in Oak. Mine uses the gel. This will be my 3rd fall/winter with it. I love it. I do not use it daily as that is too expensive because of the price of the gel. I use occasionally at the start of fall to take the chill out of my room and on cold winter days when I want the feel of a warm cozy fireplace. I recomend this especially if the electric goes out in the winter. It will not heat the whole house or anything but if you put it into a bedroom or smaller room with some ventalation and close the door, I am sure it would keep the room warm. Not hot, but not freezing.

Very well constructed, beautiful design and excellent for small corners. The log lighting effect settings and the heater provides an excellent atmosphere. The motor is a bit noisey. Otherwise, I am sure you will enjoy, sit back and relax.

Product performs as expected. the one bit of advice to anyone purchasing this item is READ and pay heed to the INSTRUCTIONS! I went through 2 before I realized the reason they didn't last long was that I was letting the liquid go past the point of damaging the heater. in other words don't walk off while it's immursed for it takes one time and one time only to damage it. It takes about 5 minutes to heat water to 180 to 190 degrees perfect for tea. if you do this it will last a long time.

The name of the product is pretty self explanatory.

Its PORTABLE.

Its IMMERSIBLE.

And it HEATS.

So why would anyone not think this works well?

You can't heat soup, or lasagna, or hot chocolate or even coffee or tea if you follow the directions to the letter. You can heat WATER. PERIOD.

Anything else and you're likely going to be disappointed that the unit dies a premature death.

That immersible thing is tricky too, because the cord is short.

You can't plug it in before you immerse it.

You can't remove it while it is still plugged in.

You can't let it boil off the water leaving it above water level (meaning you CANNOT leave this unattended).

Follow these three simple rules, and I think you'll be more than pleased with yours.

One that I had lasted over a year...until-distracted-I forgot about it.

Came back to find a half full cup of water and a dead heater.

My bad.

Learn from my mistakes.

Enjoy hot beverages anywhere on the go!

AND FOR ANYONE WONDERING...

Fast shipping, quick email responses, good customer service.

This is the third immersion heater I have used and it is the best. I paid twice as much for the others and this one heats water to boiling within about five minutes as opposed to ten or more minutes with the others. I got this one at ACE hardware.

Honest reviews on NORPRO 559 Immersion Heater for Warming Liquids

I bought this immersion heater to take with me into the hospital. I was having radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer. I knew I'd be able-bodied, but bored, under orders to drink lots of fluids, and seeing very little of the nurses, as they do these treatments in special isolation rooms. It was such a good thing to be able to have a cup of hot herbal tea, or some cocoa, whenever I wanted, just as I would at home. The immersion heater worked perfectly. The key is to remember that you must never plug the heater in until the coil is immersed in your cup, and never remove the coil from your cup until you unplug it. The heater boils water so fast, you really do need to watch ita watched pot may never boil, but a forgotten immersion heater would boil your cup dry very quickly. I had to put my heater away in a box with the books I read in the hospital, as they scanned my stuff with a Geiger counter when my treatment was over, and it read "hot". Everything will be safe to use again after a month, and I will be glad to have the heater to use when we travel. My post-treatment scan gave me a clean bill of health, so I will be enjoying this heater for a long time to come!

Works great if you ALWAYS follow these steps:

1. Fill your cup with water

2. Insert the heater into the water, THEN plug it in.

3. It takes a couple of minutes to get the water boiling.

4. Unplug the heater first, THEN remove it from the water.

This is the third electric mattress pad we have had and it is by far my favorite. I bought it because of the auto-off feature. My spouse is not so good about remembering to turn it off and now I don't have to check it.

We use the European style of bedding: a comforter with a duvet cover and no top sheet. Making the bed literally takes a few seconds. However, this set-up is impossible with electric blankets, so we use the electric mattress pads. The first one had very noticeable wires. Now we are not "Princess and a Pea" people, but it was not comfortable. It had to be on for at least 15 minutes to feel any heat. Still, we used it for many years. Later I replaced it with a better one. Still, the wires were uncomfortable and it was slow to heat. I put an additional mattress pad on top of the heated one to make it more comfortable, which probably reduced the heat even further, but it cushioned the wires.

This model is really great. I do not feel any wires at all. It heats very quickly. Turn it on PH and it preheats at the top setting for 30 minutes, then goes to what you had it set at.

The only thing I don't like about this is that the plug in is on the top (horizontal)foot of the bed instead of on the (vertical) side. Our feet hit a hard plate. It is not unpleasant, it will just take some time to get used to it. You also have to plug the unit in on an outlet that is on the right side of the bed for the controllers to properly reach your nightstands. It states that in the instructions, but I wanted to plug it in on the left (my husband's) side as my side's outlet was full. The first time I tried the bed I was unhappy with the heat. I had it on PH and didn't feel it. Then my foot happened to kick over to my husband's side and it was toasty warm. A minute spent moving the plug (and controllers) and it worked fine. Amazing what following the instructions can do.

This product works as shown. It has dual adjustable zones (my wife likes to cook, I merely like to steep) and a nice "preheat" mode that works quickly (turn it on before you brush your teeth, and the bed is warm by the time you get there). We haven't turned on the heat at all this winter, and we would have if we didn't have this.

We have previously owned electric blankets and this is *so* much better. Heat rises, make the most of it!

We've had it about a month so far, and no problems. I was worried whether we should pay a lot more for the more expensive line Amazon offered, but so far I am really happy with how this one turned out.

This is a great product. The preheat function means you don't have to turn it on 30 minutes before bedtime. 5 minutes is plenty for it to warm the bed. Would definitely recommend.

Honest reviews on Sunbeam Imperial 140-Thread-Count Polyester Cotton Blend Comfort

I purchased this product last week and it failed out of the box. Sunbeam's heated blanket and mattress pad products have many quality issues. I have purchased 3 within the the last 5 years and they typically will not last more than a single winter. I can guarantee they will not last the 5 year guarantee period. When they quit operating, Sunbeam requires that you ship the blanket to a service center somewhere in the south. After several weeks a blanket is returned to you. Ours was not the blanket shipped. At least the returned blanket was clean. Thanks! I purchased this heated mattresss pad because I thought it might be more durable than the blanket.

Sunbeam used to manufacture quality products that worked well and lasted for years. It's hard to believe this product is still marketed as the "#1 Heated Mattress Pad."

I received this mattress pad heater as a present and it was wonderful for a total of 23 days. It now blinks an error message 'F2' and will not heat up. I googled this in hopes of finding a solution and apparently it happens quite often to other buyers and is un-fixable. Very unhappy with this product (SUNBEAM IMPERIAL HEATED MATTRESS PAD).

This is a great heater! We use it to heat the living area of our RV. The living area is approximately 26' x 10' with normal height ceilings. We've tried a few different compact room heaters, but they were too small to heat the area and also way too noisy. We've had the heater about 4 months now. Since we are staying in cooler climates, we've used it almost every night (overnight).

The best features about this heater are:

It's QUIET!!!

Really!! We have tried many heaters in our RV and house over the years and they tend to be so noisy. The model we tried before purchasing the Lasko was so noisy we had to crank the tv volume up to hear over it. This Lasko seems to be about as quiet as a fan could be.

It has an automatic thermostat you can set.

This model has a high/low and auto setting. The high/low settings are not thermostat controlled. You simply choose hotter or less hot air. :) The auto setting allows you to set the thermostat to the temperature you desire. It seems reasonably "accurate". That is, the temperature it displays is within 3-4 degrees of the other thermometers I have around the room. Once you set the thermostat, the heater cycles on/off, just like you would expect. This is a great way to keep the room at your target temperature. We use this mode every night.

It oscillates.

This sounds like a silly feature to list, but it makes a big difference in heating up a room. The previous heaters we've had did not oscillate. Therefore, the area directly in front of the heater was warmed, but the rest of the room was not. The oscillation really helps get the heat moved around the room so that you are not creating hot and cold spots. We always turn on the oscillation to heat the room. I am sold on that feature and would not buy another heater in the future unless it oscillated.

It has a remote control.

The only thing that would make it better is if you could see the settings on the remote instead of having to look at the top of the heater. But, if they did that, the cost would go up. So, I'm happy with this remote given the price of the unit.

There are a couple of negatives about this heater:

To me, it is annoying that it beeps for every setting you change. This may be a problem if you plan to use it in your bedroom and change settings while someone is asleep. The beeping is really apparent when you want to change the thermostat. When you unplug the heater, it resets itself to 75 degrees. So, if you then want to set it to 60 degrees, you are going to hear 15 LOUD beeps. Turn it on beep. Choose oscillate beep. Change to auto setting beep. Decide to up the temperature by 3 degrees during the night beep, beep, beep... and your partner is now awake! You get the idea. :) I assume Lasko designed the beep so that you would know you changed something while clicking the remote control. But, it's so loud they should either make it softer or give you an option to turn it off.

There is no "fan only" setting.

It seems like most heaters I've purchased in the past have a fan only setting. I'm not sure why this one does not. Since you have the big unit sitting there in your room, it would be nice if it could be used to circulate air during the day when it's warmer, and then heat at night once the temps have dropped. Since we are using this heater in our RV, it's more noticeable to me since we need to have space for the both the heater and a fan. Oh well.

Overall, we love this heater and would buy it again.

I rate it at 4.5 stars.

(PS we bought it at a local store, not via Amazon, so I can't comment on shipping).

UPDATE 1/18/2010: We've had this heater about 1 year now and it's still going strong. One thing I've noticed is that it will build up lint (Ummm... ok, cat & dog fur...). I wish there was a filter we could access and clean more directly. Oh well, other than that this heater is still doing great.

I own two of these Lasko tower heaters--this review is for the newest one which has a remote control. In the accompanying video, you will see a detailed explanation of the buttons on the control panel and the indicator lights on the screen. In the video, I note that the only thing I really DISlike about this heater is that what passes for a carry handle on the back of this model is pathetic...I can't see how anyone could pick up the heater and carry it that way. In fact, when I tried, I dropped it. My other heater has an obvious carry handle on the top.

The remote control is fantastic for turning the unit on and off or changing the thermostat from bed, from across the room, etc. The remote contains all the controls that the actual heater has on its control panel. When the heater is oscillating, it can be a little tricky to get the remote to "talk" to the heater at first...you just have to wait for it to oscillate toward you to click the remote.

UPDATE: This heater died yesterday (Jan. 18, 2012). I have no clue what happened. I went to turn it earlier and nothing. Used the reset instructions which say to unplug and wait 5 minutes and turn it back on. Nothing. Tried it in 3 different outlets. Nothing. Bummer.

this heater is a life saver! my room mate and i are too cheap to have the heater on all the time. when we are home we have it on at a tolerable 65 degrees and turn it off when we leave the apartment. the heater is a great way to save on the bills and is eco-friendly. it heats up my room very well and pretty fast.

i decided to get lasko just because my boss has one in his office and i do like it. i also saw it at wal-mart and for only 45 dollars (w00t) and it's up for 75 bucks on the lasko website (double w00t) so it was a good deal!

the bad:

-the digital display is on top of the heater. it's inconvenient when i want to see the digital display screen from my bed

-no fan only option

the good!:

-quiet enough for me to fall asleep to (and i'm a light sleeper!)

-comes with a cute little remote controller with the same buttons as the heater and is very convenient if you don't want to get out of bed

-the heater beeps when you use the remote on it to show that it gets the command

-very cool feature: the auto option is great! let's say i have it set to 75 degrees. the heater will heat up to 77 degrees and temporarily shut off till the room cools down to 74 degrees. then the heater starts up again and the cycle keeps continuing till you or the timer shuts it off. i usually have this on when i'm sleeping and have no worries about being too hot.

-a timer that goes up to 8 hours

-high, low, or automatic setting

-can turn from side to side only on the high and auto setting

-compact

-has a handle in the back for easy carrying

i've had this heater only for a month, but i can tell it's going to last for a long while! because of it, i'm going to trust lasko!! i highly recommend this heater. as you can see, the good outweighs the bad!

Honest reviews on Lasko 755320 Ceramic Tower Heater with Digital Display and Remote

I bought this heater for $40 and am pleased with its performance. We use it in our basement gameroom and live in Western PA cooler climate.

The heating element is the same for all of their heaters meaning they all provide the same amount of heat. The differences are in the features. This model has a couple features worth noting.

oscillating the heater slowly turns back and forth to disperse the heat around the room. Control this on the remote or the unit.

thermostat the heater kicks on when the ambient temp around the heater is 2 degrees under the set temp. It stays on until it reaches the desired temp. Control this on the remote or the unit.

CONS: the only negative to this model is that the temperature is digitally displayed but faces UP. When seated on a couch level with the unit, you can not see the temperature. Obviously this is not a reason to not buy this model but it is worth noting. This is why the unit received 4/5 stars. It is otherwise perfect!

Regarding the hot cord, I did not experience this. But I also did not have it running for 5+ continuous hours. Ours kicks on until the room is up to the set temp and turns off. If it was running on high for hours on end, the cord will probably heat up. Any heater will do this.

I only noticed the smell of heated plastic for the first 5 minutes the unit was on (first time it was started). This smell went away and I have not noticed it sense (few weeks of owning it and use it every night).

I bought one of these last year to put in my bedroom because I live on a three-floor townhome and the termostat is on the second floor. My bedroom is very large and the little heater did a great job warming it up. So I decided to get a couple more heaters, one for the guest bedroom and one for my basement office. They did such a great job and made my energy bill so much lower that I brought the guest room heater to the living room and turned off the central heat.

This year, I went to a store and saw them at a lower price, so I went ahead and bought another one to put back in the guest bedroom. They are really great because not only do they have remote controls, but they also have an auto setting, so you can program the temperature you want and just leave it on. Programming is as easy as pushing a button to set it higher or another one to set it lower, and the heater thermostat makes sure the room stays at about the temperature you set. This product is so good that two of my friends went ahead and bought some for their houses after they came over and I told them about how happy I am with them!

Here are my thoughts on this product:

PROS

light and easy to carry around if you want to move it from one room to another

durable, the ones I bought a year ago work as great as they did when I bought them

convenient and easy to use remote control

easy to use digital control on the unit

automatic temperature setting

heats up the space quickly, even larger rooms

does not use much electricity

nice design, easy on the eyes

cheap and small enough that you can get one for each room of your place

for multi-floored homes, if working with central heaters it will help level the heat throughout the place

CONS

after thinking a lot, I realized that the only con is that you have to be careful where you store the remote control during the summer. I had put the ones that are in rooms where there are drawers in the drawers, but can't remember where I put the remote for the unit in my living room. So, if you purchase this during the cold months, come up with a system for storing the remotes at a place you will remember by the time it gets cold again next year.

UPDATE: When the temperature gets really low outside (teens through low 20th's) I do turn on my central heater to help with the larger area of my place (living and dining rooms that are open together). So, if you live in a colder region and have larger areas with big windows or sliding doors, one of these heaters may not be enough to keep such areas toasty. Although, if it is a larger area that has heavy curtains helping insulate it, etc, then it may be all you need (ie: my bedroom is 15 x 12 and this little heater handles all that is needed to keep the room warm, and the finished part of my basement that has only a window--not a large glass sliding door like the living room-can also be kept really nice and warm with just one of these heaters running in it).

Enjoy your warm home!

When I first received this wine cooler it worked great. Loved the layout and the dual controls. But after a couple years in service the compressor went out. Fortunately we had an extended warranty that covered the costs. About 1/2 a year later the cooler was down again. This time the warranty was up and the parts were on backorder. The cooler was down about 45 days before we received the parts (Which were very expensive). That brings us up to now and the cooler is down again, only this time the parts will be 2-3 months. My feeling is that a company is only as good as its service and Avanti gets and F. They do not returns calls. The local repair shop--their "authorized service tech"--is at wits end trying to get the parts for us. Well, after reviewing the cost of the new parts, we finally decided that to repair it again would be too expensive...so it becomes junk!

Shipped promptly and was set up inside the house. The unit has no rollers under it just leveling feet. The compressor and fan are fairly quiet when they come on. Shelves accommodate various size bottles including chardonnay, pinot noir and thick glass bottles. Did not have issues with the fit being so tight that it scraped the labels off. It is rare that I was able to get 10 bottles on a shelf, so capacity was really more like 130 bottles than 160. Overall great unit at a great price. I would recommend it.

The temperature does not remain constant, widely fluctuating as much as 7 degrees within minutes with no atmosphereic temperature change of any significance, and it will not remain at the same temperature range as its 683 counterpart right next to it that I purchased in 2010. Further, I called the Avanti service line to arrange a for a technician to examine the unit under the warranty. The company they contract with in St. Louis is called ServTech and the technician who was supposed to make the service call for them is Ed Springer. I arranged with Ed to come Saturday morning (April 13) at 9:30 A.M. I opened the main front door of the house around 9:10 or 9:15, thus leaving only the windowed storm door closed so he would know I was there, I saw his card stuck in the main door window. So the guy showed up long before 9:30, left his card, and took off. I never heard a knock and never got a call from him to tell me he was there. Wait, it gets worse. I called him 3 times on Saturday, told him that I knew he was there before 9:30, and to please call me back so he could come back and do the job. I never heard from him.

After weeks of putting up with two flaky Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd Generation T200577 units, I gave up on Nest and decided to give this a shot. So far, it's been pretty decent.

Since the two are similarly-priced, and there are lots of reviews about each model, I'll offer a comparison.

INSTALLATION:

Without question, this is harder to install than a Nest. In saying that though, some people are going to find the installation much easier than others.

First, the ecobee has a relatively large panel that needs to go "somewhere" between your furnace and thermostat. For my setup, my furnace and thermostat share different sides of the same wall. So, wiring could have been as simple as cutting the thermostat line somewhere in the middle, wiring up R/W/G/Y in the panel, and using the remaining wire to do +/-/I/O to the thermostat.

The tricky part is getting power to the panel. I decided I was going to run a common wire, and after changing out the physical wire, I realized that I didn't know as much about 24V as I thought. Now, I *could* learn some more about HVAC wiring, or I *could* check and see if I have a 12V wall wort type of transformer.

Sure enough, I had a 12V transformer from an old Linksys router, and my power problem was easily solved. Then I connected my humidifier to the first ACC terminals, and I was set.

The Nest, on the other hand, required no wire cutting, and draws power from the existing wiring. However, it's notoriously unstable. Om my particular system, it would complain about improper wiring for ten minutes or more, if the power had been cut. Others have reported the battery slowly discharging. Easy to install, not so easy to maintain.

INTELLIGENCE

The Nest tries to learn when you come and go, and when you adjust the thermostat, and creates schedules accordingly. In my experience, it creates them totally wrong -not noticing for hours when the house is empty, arbitrarily turning on the heat to a temperature it had never been set to, allowing a wide variance on either side of the temperature you set it at.

The ecobee, on the other hand, tries to learn how your house and furnace work. It isn't going to learn that you like it to be 73 when you first wake up, but it is going to learn how long it takes to make sure your house is 73 when you tell it you wake up.

CONNECTIVITY

Both Nest and ecobee offer a web interface. Nest is bright, clear, and easy to use. It's like using Apple's iCloud service. On the other hand, ecobee is full of options that aren't necessarily clear to laypeople, was designed for someone data-driven, and is as inviting as reconfiguring your home router for fun.

On the IOS / Android side, Nest presents a smaller (though fully-functional) version of their web interface. Brilliantly, ecobee did just the opposite. Their mobile application presents an interface that looks just like your thermostat's interface. Very, very smart.

DATA

Nest shows you a cute daily bar that represents 24 hours in a day. When there's a red slash, the furnace was on. Blue for A/C. Some days, you'll get an arbitrary leaf.

Fire up Microsoft Excel 2010 if you want to get granular with the ecobee, because every five minutes, it logs:

*Date

*Time

*System Setting (heat / cool / off)

*System Mode (compressor, heating stage, etc.)

*Calendar Event

*Program Name

*Cool Set Temp

*Heat Set Temp

*Actual Temp (accurate within 1/10 degree)

*Humidity Set Point

*Actual Humidity

*Outdoor Temp

*Wind Speed

*Cool Stage1 (seconds)

*Heat Stage1 (seconds)

*Fan (seconds)

*Humidifier (seconds)

*DM Offset

So, you wind up with something that looks like this:

Date Time System Setting System Mode Calendar Event Program Mode Cool Set Temp (F) Heat Set Temp (F) Current Temp (F) Humidity Set Point (%RH) Current Humidity (%RH) Outdoor Temp (F) Wind Speed (km/h) Cool Stage 1 (sec) Heat Stage 1 (sec) Fan (sec) Humidifier (sec) DM Offset

12/3/2012 0:15:00 cool compressorCoolOff Kevin Up 72 68 71.8 0 50 45 0 0 0 180 0

It's exportable as a CSV, or if you want to scour your info from ecobee's page, it looks like they've got some RRDTool implementation running.

CONSTRUCTION QUALITY

The Nest is the one that's going to impress. It feels substantial, it looks beautiful, and any monkey can use it.

This thermostat is the one that makes people say "...but it has a great personality, and really nice hair". The interface looks and feels about a decade old, the touchscreen is more than a little temperamental about registering taps, and the unit itself ls flimsy plastic to Nest's steel and glass.

VERDICT

I'm reserving some judgement to see how my next bill looks. The Nest actually increased my electric bill, and kept my gas bill at the same usage as my previous furnace, which was rated at 15% lower AFUE. Like the Nest, and its eight updates, I plan to update this.

If you put a gun to my head, I'd say the ecobee is the more serious thermostat. So far, I'd buy it again.

UPDATE: 02/26/13

I noticed a request or two for an update, so here goes...

Now that I've had the Ecobee for a while, my gas usage is down 30% year-over-year. Part of that is a more efficient furnace from last year. But when comparing to the Nest I had, my gas usage went down in spite of the weather getting colder. So the actual Ecobee-vs-Nest savings is fairly substantial.

What I like the most, though, is that the Ecobee lets you get very granular. Want the fan to operate for 15 minutes out of every hour? No problem. Want to set up different temperatures every half hour? Done. Need the humidifier to operate independently of the heat? Just connect the wires to the brain board.

So in addition to saving gas, I'm also able to circulate the air -keeping the temperature even throughout the house, and filtering it -and make a nighttime schedule that drops from 72 to 65 so gently, you'd hardly notice. There's something psychological about hearing the air circulate, I guess.

As far as intelligence and reporting, there's so much, it's probably easier to type out what's on the HomeIQ page:

First, you get the crazy metrics I pointed out above, presented in a graph.

Then, another runtime report that charts how long your HVAC system ran, and another tab that adjusts the runtime to external temperature.

And then... insights (and I'm typing these out as they appear):

Your Ecobee saved you 4%

Your Ecobee rating: **** / ***** (This is a calculation of how your house retains heat)

Your system ran 7% less than the average for your state / province

In January, your heating ran for 124 hours. This was 43 hours more than the previous month.

Your performance is influenced by a number of factors:

1) Weather -In January, your average weather was 27.1 degrees Fahrenheit. This was 5.7 degrees colder than the previous month.

2) Weekly Schedule -In January, your average heat setpoint was 70.2 degrees Fahrenheit. This was 0.3 degrees warmer than the previous month.

It's all displayed as infographics, and looks really sharp. Compared to "You got a leaf for today", Nest really can't hold a candle to it.

All things considered, this is the thermostat for any true geek who wants to build an insanely custom HVAC system, or for someone who enjoys never having to check the thermostat, because the temperature is so well-balanced after investing some programming time. I'd absolutely buy this again.

Synopsis:

Yes, this is a pricey thermostat there is no disputing that but, this isn't a clunky time clock that just adjusts the temperature set point a few times a day either. Plain and simple, it's a computer to monitor and control your home environment and it does this very well.

Prior to purchase...

The Ecobee website (ecobee.com) has links to download the installation and operating manuals and is well worth a look prior to purchasing the unit. There are no fewer than a dozen different wiring diagrams for various single or multi-stage configurations including heat pumps.

My situation:

I purchased the EB-STAT-02 for my vacation home. I may use the home on the weekend, a couple of weeks in a row or, I may not visit for a month. A traditional "time clock" thermostat just doesn't fill the need I may as well just have a conventional thermostat and deal with waiting for the system to adjust when I arrive.

Complicating my irregular visitation and use of the house, I have a somewhat unique 2 stage heating / 1 stage cooling system. Not that it's all that "unique", it's just not typical. I have a hydronic radiant floor heating system as stage 1 that is augmented by electric forced air as stage 2. Cooling is via a single stage forced air system. A radiant floor heating system is very slow to react to significant temperature changes. What this means is that if I just drop in unplanned for a winter weekend, the weekend may be over before the stage 1 temperature to comes up to its set point. The ability to adjust the settings remotely is *huge* for me. (I know, I know radiant floor heating for a vacation home?? It's a future retirement home too!)

The installation:

Given the fact that there is no industry color standard for control wiring for residential heating and air conditioning, the installation for my system was likely more difficult than most will ever experience. Did I mention that I also have sensors for the floor slab temperature and outdoor temperature adding 4 more wires into the mix? (I purchased the remote sensor module add-on for up to 4 external sensors.) This is where Ecobee's tech support comes in. Even though the Ecobee website is up front about urging you to find a contractor in your area to install your stat and the warranty contains the standard disclaimers to discourage DIY'ers, Ecobee's tech support was great. I communicated with them via email since I wasn't at the house and I was pre-planning. I emailed them diagrams of my previous stat wiring and what I thought was the correct new wiring, asking for opinions. They identified a jumper that I needed for proper staging. Email responses weren't instantaneous, it took a day or so but, if I was in a hurry, I would have called.

Setting the thermostat up for internet access (wireless!) was completely painless. Typing on the thermostat's on screen "keyboard" was a lot like sending email on a smart phone cumbersome to me but not too bad.

Operation:

My thermostat is all connected now and working fine. I still have to review and tweak the program settings to decide things such as what the temperature differences between stage 1 and 2 should be. There are numerous customizable settings in addition to the typical wake up / away / return / sleep time settings.

Internet Access!

After the initial installation and set-up, I seldom make any changes on the thermostat, I use my browser instead. I go right to my thermostat and monitor what the set point is and adjust it if I want to. I can review and download the temperature set point data, internal humidity and temperature readings and even have it email specific data to me such as temperature out of range and air handler filter change needed.

Smartphone Access too!

Although not as comprehensive as the web browser access, there is a free app for your Smartphone that you can use to make adjustments.

Summary:

All in all, I'm very pleased with the Ecobee thermostat, the only drawback (if you can call it that) is price. However, it's not at all fair to compare the price of this unit to a traditional thermostat because feature-wise, there is no comparison. It's like comparing a radio to the HDTV on either device at the end of the ballgame you'll know who won, but it's a very different experience getting there.

Last fall I purchased two different "smart" thermostats to try out before we made a decision on which to use throughout our home. The ecobee was recommended by a local architect. We've used the thermostats for 5 months straight, and I think we will likely go with the other brand due to ease of installation and ease of use issues with the ecobee. That said, the ecobee is a good product.

Pros:

-Reliable. While occasionally the ecobee seems to spontaneously go offline and display its flapping wings logo (is it updating itself?), it always comes back online automatically and has never required a reset.

-Reasonably good looking

-Programming using the web-based interface is easy

-Does what it is supposed to do and is controllable remotely if you create an ecobee account and link the termostat

-Allows for direct control of variables like temperature differential (i.e., do you want it to turn on and off at +/1 degree from the set temperature or +/2, etc.)

Cons:

-Thermostat touch screen is a textbook example of bad user interface design -i.e., they opted for a slick looking slider instead of simple +/buttons. I do not have large fingers and I can almost never get the slider where I want it on the first try. It drives me nuts that the hardest thing to do on this user interface is set the temperature.

-The iPhone app is very limited and similarly frustrating. For example you can do a temporary override to any temperature but you cannot change the duration of the hold (it defaults to 4 hours). Or you can enter "quicksave" mode which indefinitely lowers the temperature by a preset amount (default is 4 degrees), but you cannot change the amount of the temperature change from the app. For most other functions you need to log in to the website to control remotely or program.

-Install requires someone reasonably knowledgeable about his or her HVAC system or else professional installation

-Because it requires installation of two boxes (interface module connects to heating and cooling systems while the thermostat connects to interface module) it might require a significant run of new wire unless the heating and cooling system controls are in the same location. For most people with forced air systems this is not an issue, but could be when combining AC with steam or hot water baseboard systems.

Honest reviews on ecobee EB-STAT-02 Smart Thermostat 4 Heat-2 Cool with Full Color

My wife and I recently purchased a new heat pump unit and wanted to upgrade to a programmable thermostat. We actually saved up too much money for the heat pump unit and had some extra money to spend. After looking at all the fancy, touch-screen programmable thermostats, I settled on this one. Yeah, sure, it's pretty pricey, but I think it's worth it.

Installation was pretty simple. I am no HVAC technician, but I was able to figure out the colored wires from the old thermostat and match them with this one. My setup is pretty simple, electric heat pump with heating and cooling modes, and the auxiliary electric heat, but there are plenty more pins for more complicated equipment setups. For those kinds of setups, I would definitely recommend hiring a real technician. One thing I liked about this unit's installation was the two-piece setup. The touchscreen part mounts wherever your thermostat is traditionally mounted. Then there is another control board that mounts out-of-sight. Fortunately, my thermostat was mounted on the outside wall of a utility closet, so this gave plenty of room to install the control board inside the closet. If you don't have the option to mount inside a closet of sorts, the control board is in a nice, clean enclosure with some LED status lights.

As for using the thermostat, it's a breeze. You can do the heating and cooling temperatures right on the home screen. It's also nice that it has a weather display of the current conditions, and you can even dig deeper into the forecast. The installation wizard was simple (for my basic system), and everything feels pretty intuitive. I would recommend using the Ecobee.com web site to do the actual time-of-day programming. There are 4 modes: awake, away, home, and night. You assign temperature ranges to each of those modes. Then you assign those modes to 30-minute chunks of each day for the week.

The only problem that I have with this thermostat is that I can never seem to get it to report the correct temperature. I've been monitoring the temperature reported by the thermostat alongside another couple of digital thermometers, and the thermostat always seems to be off by 1-2 degrees. There is a setting in the thermostat that allows you to adjust the displayed temperature by a few degrees in half-degree increments. However, I always seem to overshoot it or undershoot it, but I'm not sure how. It seems like it may be overcompensating somehow? It's either that, or it only takes temperature readings every 15-30 minutes. I'm not sure which.

I almost forgot to mention that there is an iPhone app for controlling the thermostat remotely. It's a little buggy and could maybe do with a little more "polish", but it gets the job done. The bugginess is that it seems to have issues authenticating you or connecting to the thermostat every now and then. It's intermittent, so waiting a couple of minutes may clear the issue up. Also, if you adjust the thermostat heating and cooling sliders, it may take a while for it to actually take effect on the thermostat itself. The trick is to wait for the mode icon to change to the resume icon to know that your settings were saved. If you exit out of the app without waiting for this confirmation, it will never save. Besides the couple of minor flaws, it's nice to be able to put the thermostat into "save" mode if you're out of the house and forgot to set it before you left.

There are a couple of other features like vacation mode that I haven't used yet. In all, after doing many hours of research, this is the only internet-enabled touchscreen thermostat that I would buy. In my opinion, it is the best one on the market (as of the time of this review).

Update: I wrote the below review in mid 2011. I have had a year of use with the ecobee and still believe it is an excellent product. I have however found some minor shortcomings and am also reviewing some other home automation products.

In hindsight I may have considered another option for a thermostat that could be accessed via a larger home automation scheme. If all you need is a good thermostat to access remotely this is a very good solution. If you are like me however and want to expand on the concept the ecobee is limited.

My first update indicated that the ecobee lacks Home Automation capability. In fact it can be extended to Zigbee module. I have not net investigated this capability so I do not know how it compares to other Zigbee or Z-Wave products.

Original review:

I purchased the ecobee thermostat to remotely control the HVAC for our vacation property. We don't always know when we will be there, and it is also nice to be able to adjust the temperature after I've driven off and forgotten to do it.

The Ecobee is a fully Programmable Thermostat that lets you operate it remotely over the internet. The unit does require a WIFI connection so that it can connect to the Internet. Remote access is actually done via Ecobee's servers and website. After the unit is configured for your WIFI Router it then starts communicating with Ecobee directly. You will set up an account with an Email Address and Password via the Thermostat. Once done you can now log on to Ecobee.com and access your unit. You can also do this with an Application on your smartphone (IPhone?) but with more limited capabilities. Very cool!

I installed the unit myself but I'm not sure I would advise this as a DIY project unless you have some knowledge of HVAC wiring and controls. The vast majority of us do not. I have a Heat Pump and failed to initially configure the Ecobee for this, so I was struggling to understand why I had no cooling. I was having discomforting thoughts of having to call a Technician to bail me out before I baked to death in my Condo. Alas I figured it out.

Traditional thermostats control your Furnace and Air Conditioning over only a few wires. In older homes that have thermostat wire with 5 or fewer strands this can present real limitations, especially for newer Two Stage Furnaces or Dual Compressor Cooling Units. Add to that Heat Pumps, Auxilary Electric heating, Dehumidification, or Humidification features, and there is no way to do this with only a few wires. Enter the concept of an Equipment Interface Module. Basically this is a separate control unit that is mounted directly to your Furnace/Air Handler and can be wired directly with a much larger selection of options. The thermostat no longer controls your Furnace directly but communicates digitally to the Equipment Interface Module using only the few wires you have in your wall. Many modern high end HVAC units now work this way. The Ecobee functions just this way.

Installation.

Ideally you would just mount the Module to the side of your Furnace or Air Handler. In my case it was a very tight fit to be able to service it so I purchased some 6 inch 'L' brackets from the hardware store and mounted it that way. Next I had to wire it. I searched locally for some thermostat wire to connect the module to my Furnace but no one had anything with more than 5 strands. I ended up driving further than I would have liked and found some 7 strand. I then disconnected the existing thermostat wire from my furnace and tried to connect it to the Module. This would be my communication wire. Too short! I had to splice in an piece to make it reach. Next I installed the new piece of 7 strand wire between the Module and my furnace. Finally I installed a piece of 2 strand wire from the 24VAC supply inside the furnace to power the Ecobee Module, otherwise you will need to buy an AC Adapter. From there it was just turning the breaker switch back on and getting things configured.

Programming is best done from a web browser and internet connection. Use the mouse to drag the 7 day calendar, then select the mode Icon (Sleep, Awake, Away, etc.). Then select the Edit Icon to adjust the mode temperatures. Once you have figured out how this works it is a breeze. I was surprised also with how easily it connected to the internet and became accessible to me. It seems very well sorted out from that standpoint. I don't feel at all like a new adopter guinea pig. By comparison it took me hours recently just to get my E3000 Cisco WIFI router working, a technology that should now be very mature. The Ecobee is without a doubt one of the coolest gadgets I have purchased in a long time. The fact that I can actually see what the temperature is in my Condo and adjust it with a finger drag on my Iphone is really futuristic stuff.

I dehydrate my own dried fruit & veggie snacks, kale chips, my own granola, fruit roll-ups, candied walnuts, almonds, pecans, etc. I have saved so much money with this dehydrator. I can make a lot at once. You don't have to rotate trays. It dries great. My neighbor makes his jerky in this. He says it's the only dehydrator that is safe for drying meat for jerky because of the temperature. It's made in the USA too.

This dehydrator is perfect for me. My friend's have Excalibur dehydrators. When I checked out the prices, I was concerned as I don't have an unlimited income. I bought the Nesco but the stacking trays and the uneven heating was a nightmare. My girlfriend had to rotate the trays and I wasn't too happy because the temperature wasn't high enough for meat even though we tried to get the temperature high enough to no avail! Back to the store it went. (http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-FD-1040-1000-watt-Gardenmaster-Dehydrator/dp/B00B9F7WJW/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1372721821&sr=8-10&keywords=nesco+dehydrator) Amazon carries this model which is similar to the other 5-tray unit, I think the only difference is a shorter warranty. Big deal. Anyway, this Excalibur was perfect for us. It's an non-timer version, which saved us a ton of money. It has plenty of drying space. It's SUPER easy to clean-up. I can make my jerky! No rotating trays during the drying time. And it's Excalibur Made in USA! We definitely recommend this product.

I was doubtful that this was both worth the money and as easy as everyone said. Boy, am I glad I was so very wrong...this is one of the better purchases I have made. While so many of my Amazon purchases (TV, Tools, ETC) have been excellent and standard "store" items so I knew what I was getting beforehand, this was new to me as I had one many, many years ago. To much work to use AND CLEAN...with so-so results...

This one is "just plug and go" with EASY CLEAN-UP to boot....Gold Box Deals, or I would not have tried due to the poor experiences previously. Goes to show ya, you can teach an old dog new things......

Honest reviews on Excalibur 5 Tray Dehydrator

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have a nesco dehydrator that is fairly well though of in reviews. It's also 1/3 the price of this machine, so is the Excalibur worth the extra price, (at the time of this review) yes, I think it is, and here is why.

I liked the Nesco but there were issues. The motor is on top, so I have to rearrange the trays and leave a lot of room on the trays for circulation. When I want to check the progress of my food I have to turn off the Nesco, lift off the motor/lid, find a place to set it, then lift off each tray to check progress or shuffle them around. This process is annoying. Also the tray slots are a little wide apart and I have berries and smaller food fall through.

The Excalibur solves the problems I had. Because the fan is in the back and the trays just slide out I can easily take off the door and check the food, turn the trays around, which you might not have to do but I do it anyway. The ease of getting the trays in our out is fantastic.

The motor hums along at a nice purr, quieter than my previous two.

The Excalibur comes with screens that go on top of the trays that slide in and out, so the food can be as tiny as you want and it doesn't fall through. If you have the Nesco the fruit leather trays fit in the Excalibur, they also sell paraflex, or you can use wax paper to make fruit or yogurt leather. yes, yogurt leather. It was in the book and says to put the yogurt on your paraflex and dry it.. and sure enough, I had sort of yogurt taffy.

The fan dries food faster than the Nesco, or the Ronco I had before the Nesco. (Yes, I've been searching for a dehydrator I want to use a lot, I finally found it with this one). The food dries more evenly. If you love jerky I suggest a meat slicer, getting the meat thin enough is key. A jerky gun is also fun, I love to grind up meat and veg and make treats for Izzy, our mini schnauzer. cook the poultry first.

The dehydrator is bulky, they all are, it's the nature of the beast. While the five drawer is fine for my family, the 9 drawer would only take up height, so if you have the room for the depth and width, you need to make sure you would have the clearance for something taller, or use it on a table or counter with no over head cabinets. The outside gets warm but not super hot, I can still put my hand against it.

The door has two molded plastic tabs that you hang the door on the machine. This worries me a bit, if those break you might be buying a new door. I just wish they seemed sturdier.

Clean up is easy. Take out the trays, wipe the inside of the machine, soak the screens a bit, clean the trays. The manual says the trays are dishwasher safe but our dishwasher broke and we chose not to replace it, so I can't address that. They wash up by hand just fine.

This model doesn't have a timer. I like to check and poke anyway, but you can easily get one of those timers for appliances so it will turn off when you want it to turn off.

The instruction manual that comes with the machine has some drying times, a few drying ideas like the yogurt. You can also make yogurt in the dehydrator, I found out online. And this is where the sliding trays come in again, you can leave one or two out to dry tall things. You can make pompadours out of oranges and cloves, or yogurt in bowls, and it will fit if you take out the top tray or two, which is a super handy feature.

There is a face book site and a web site with lots of fans, tricks and tips, and recipes for the Excalibur.

I called Customer service with a question, was on hold less than a minute, and got a quick and helpful answer.

I am passing my Nesco along. The Excalibur, with it's ease of use, easy clean up, screens, faster and more even drying, and the ability to remove trays for extra height, make this one a winner. The only two, not even issues, but points of less than perfection maybe, are the molded tabs, and with the Nesco you can add more trays. Since the Excalibur is pretty much static as far as what you get is what you get, if you want more room you will have to buy another larger machine.

However, five trays is a lot of drying space. I have done a pear, apple, peach, apricot, grapes and cherries all at one time. We are a family of four so I would say that unless you are a hunter looking to make tons and tons of jerky, or a really avid gardener with a lot of produce, the five drawer is probably going to fit most of your needs, but the nine drawer is always an option.

Highly recommended!

I have no affiliation with any builder, manufacturer, or any company involved with this product. I am just a homeowner doing a remodeling project that wanted a Fake Fireplace. You really should check this out on You Tube, It is really great, you should see it.

I found this Faux Fireplace because I was remodeling my home. I grew up with a real wood burning fireplace with a Mantel, and loved it. Burn when I got married, our home had no real fireplace, so for 20 years I have done without. My Roaring Fire Fix was getting a Cabin in the Winter for a long weekend and having a fire. Well, that was okay, but I always missed the Winter Fireplace at Home growing up. Last Year we decided to build our Dream Home. We decided to modify our Family room into a Home Theatre, and I wanted a fireplace too.

So, . . . How do I get a Fireplace in a room with a Big Screen TV and all the equipment. You have to worry about producing Heat, and my wife always commented on our weekend getaways about it getting too Warm, so I looked around. My criteria were: 1) a VERY Realistic Fire effect; 2) Little or No heat production. I did not want a cheesy color wheel and plastic flames!

I came across the Dimplex OptiMyst Electric Fireplaces. I checked them out on You Tube, and was impressed. The Fire Effect is VERY Realistic. The Effect is generated by water vapor and lighting, so the effect is random, and the only heat is from the light bulbs. You actually can reach right into the "Flame" and all you will feel is warm moist air. So, . . . Realistic, CHECK! Little or No Heat Production, CHECK! AND, is DOES HAVE a HEATER if you want to turn it on.

Because I was having a Mantel created I opted for the Fireplace Insert, rather than a whole Fireplace including Mantel, (which Dimplex also sells). A word of Caution, Dimplex also makes other kinds of Faux Fireplaces, so be careful if you order, because they do not all use the same process as the Optymyst Line.

With the Fireplace effect on, but no Heat on, the room does become a more humid, but I was testing it in April, (I just couldn't wait any longer for my Remodel to be done.) so the Moist Spring Air may have been a factor, versus the typically Dry Winter air we have in Ohio. My Audio Video guy warned that using this Fireplace under a Big Screen TV could void the warranty by risking heat damage from the Heater, and Moisture Damage from the Humidity, so know your risks, and use good judgement on use and placement. I don't plan to use the heater, and do plan to use a circulating ceiling fan in the room to try to disburse the humidity thru the room.

A last few comments. The Fireplace is rated low on the energy cost scale, but I have not had it run but a couple hours, so I can't say how accurate that would be with or without heater on. Also, USE ONLY FILTERED TAP WATER to keep the System in good working order, and do not leave water in the tank for weeks at a time, (Dimplex warns this, I don't know why, but at these prices why take a chance). I found it very easy to remove the mechanism and drain. I tried to view this in a showroom in Ohio, but did not find it in the store, I called first, and suggest you save the driving and call to verify they have them on display. You Tube has several store in the States showing them, so other areas may have them available to check out.

After searching for an electric fireplace for my bedroom and only finding very fake looking ones, I happened upon a video on youtube for the Dimplex Optimyst. What an amazing electric fireplace. I can't believe how realistic the flames look in real life and it puts out optional heat too! The only bummer is that it does not include a sound box to create that realistic fire sound of hissing and popping like a real fire does but you hardly miss it. The seller shipped it very fast and in perfect condition.

I've decided to add this fireplace to my casa. Everyone that checks it out says that it's amazing. The flames are great and have a controllable height and the heater works just as intended. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to go electric, even though it's way more expensive than many other brands you will easily forget that its electric as soon as you plug it in.

The cons for this item are that it is basically sheet metal so you may have to tweek it for that "custom" fit depending on the size of area you have available. Lastly, the light from the center flame tends to bleed through and you'll see an "ambient" orange line on your ceiling.

Great product though, highly recommended.

Replaced an old wood burning fireplace in a 12x15 living room with this. I'm not one for tacky or gaudy; this is neither. Unbelievably realistic, attractive, and great source of heat. Couldn't be used to heat the house, but def takes the chill out of the room. Would recommend to anyone!

The imagery is real good and makes for a good fireplace insert. The problem comes from is when it's time to change the light bulbs. It requires some dis-assembly which should be no big deal but it is. After you dissemble the parts to get to the bulbs, it is still tight to get your hands in to unscrew the bottom bulbs. One was so tight

It blew up in my hands. leaving the screw part in the socket. Could not get it out. Tried to disassemble the box further to get at it better to no avail. Frustrated I bought a new one, to replace it. There was no guarantee, if I was able to get to it better that I would be able to get it out without breaking the plastic socket. I found it on sale on Amazon. So I bought the replacement. I have all the parts of the old one, I have another unused fireplace downstairs, when I get my basement ready I will reassemble it for looks...

Very satisfied with the product. It was exactly as stated in the description. This is the second Dimplex electric fireplace I have. It provides enough heat to warm my entire living space, so I can keep the thermostat turned down so the bedroom stay cool.

I just bought this air conditioner for $119.99 from Costco 2 days ago.(I think that it is on sale right now, there are three kinds of air conditioners in Costco now, this one is the smallest one which I can carry). Last night, it cools down the living room(inluding the kichen) and my bedroom. I thought that I just need a small blanket. But this air conditioner seems powerful and I covered myself with down comforter later. This air conditioner is relatively quiet(I am really sensitive to noise), so for some(most) people, this one is probably really quiet. I like its' size and weight because I lift it up and set all things up all by myself( female, thin) with no problem. Easy install, :) Overall, until now, I am satisfied with this one.

This unit beats the pants off the others Ive had. All the previous window units by Goldstar Ive had failed in about 2 seasons usually, they suddenly stop cooling and it's likely an electronics issue.

But this DANBY, wow! first thing I noticed was it puts out a hurricane of air that is much stronger than any other unit Ive owned, and it pumps out the cold air.

Im packing it away soon after it's 2nd season of use.

My 1930 house is about 1100 sq ft with R100 insulation in the attic, about R24 in the walls, and this one unit keeps the ENTIRE house around 72-74 degrees when it's over 90 outside and humidity around 90%, that is very impressive for even a 10,000 BTU a/c to do, and this one does it with 5200 BTU, so if you use this in a smaller room than my entire house, you can be sure you'll need to turn it to "low" or go with a smaller model than you are replacing i.e if you NOW have like 6000 BTU or something, this 5200 will be better.

What a nice surprise this air conditioner is! I just bought it at Costco for $119, and there is a $30 rebate from the power company because it is energy star rated. This has every feature I could possibly want and it is quiet. I am tempted to get another one for my kitchen, which gets terribly hot. This is a great buy and I strongly recommend it. Initially I hesitated because I never heard of this company, but a 5000 BTU that is energy star rated, has an economy setting and a remote for this kind of money??? I went for it. Costco is great for things like this,if you don't like it for any reason, even after a long time, they will take it back. You have nothing to lose and coolness to gain!

I installed the Danby AC unit a month ago and only have good things to say so far other than the price.

The Danby is replacing a 6000 BTU Frigidaire and it keeps my 15' x 15' bedroom just as cold. The roof is dark grey and the sun is beating on the room from 12:00-1:00 till sunset.

The best feature for me is how quiet it runs on the coldest setting and fan on high. I only have to raise the volume on my TV about 10 percent higher than normal to hear it clearly. When the Frigidaire was on its coldest setting I had to raise the volume 30 percent or more to hear the TV.

I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone..

Boy this unit really kicks power. We have two and found ourselves commonly only needing to use 1. When used in the master suite, we were constantly turning it down because the room always got 2 cold. The other one cooled off the rest of the house just fine. Our place is about 1300 sq ft. This thing is small, easy to install yet very powerful. Oh and it's very quiet. I would definitely purchase again if I had to.

If you read this review and decide this product is not for you... that's reasonable. If you blindly order this product, never even try to install it, and then leave a negative review... that's profoundly unreasonable. I was almost dissuaded from this item based on a prior review even though that review was beyond useless, the product is exactly what I needed, and I have never seen anything else like it. This product offers an ingenious solution for my problem (not enough wires from thermostat to HVAC system), it was easy to install (with some basic knowledge I have no HVAC training beyond what I found on "The Google") and it works. 5 stars.

As some background, let me say I'm not even a particularly good handyman... I have a drill and not much else for power tools. But to make up for any lack of knowledge/skill, I have an over abundance of confidence and access to the internet. You can decide if that makes me wise or a fool, and whether you trust this review. I am sure this installation carries risks I am not even aware of. You assume all risks and are responsible for any damage/injury/death/electrocution/fire/etc.

To start, I was short on wires after I installed programmable thermostats. The original house wiring had 4 wires to the HVAC, which was sufficient for the original heating/ac thermostats since they were battery powered and didn't need HVAC power (they used: red wire for hot voltage, white wire for heater, yellow wire for cooling, and green wire for fan control). Unfortunately, programmable thermostats generally require external power (usually from the HVAC), meaning they need a 5th wire for ground. I tried switching the wiring at each season change (kept one wire for hot voltage, one wire for GROUND or common, one wire for fan, and then I would need to connect the last wire to either cooling or heating but not both). This turned out to be a real PITA here in New England, where one day it's 90+ and I would have to rewire for AC and the next day its 50 or below and back I go to disconnect the AC and connect the furnace...

This product is designed perfectly for the above scenario. It could also be used to bypass a broken wire or for certain other situations where you need one more wire. What you get is some passive element to combine two wires into one at the level of the thermostat, and then an adapter that installs at the air handler to separate the combined signal back onto two wires. My guess is that it is using voltage to multiplex the signals. For example 0 volts means both wires are off, 12 V means the fan wire should be on only, and the full 24V means both fan and AC wires should be on. Then the signals are demultiplexed at the air handler. That's a guess, but it makes sense to me. This assumption also explains the stated limitations... you can't use either the hot (red) or common lines for any combo since they must always be fixed at 24 and 0 volts. Also, I suspect one of the combined wires will become unable to activate alone (not a problem if it's the AC wire, which you would always want running with the fan... but don't wire backwards so the fan can only run with the AC on...)

As noted, there are some other limitations with this scenario, but fortunately for the 4 to 5 wire conversion you wouldn't notice (described below). If you are going from 2 to 3 wires the limits become more significant, see the documentation on the Venstar website for details. In my scenario, I combined the yellow (AC) and green (fan control) on one wire, thus allowing the thermostat to control everything with just 4 wires instead of 5. It works flawlessly. I can turn the fan on alone. I can turn the heat on alone (or with the fan). I can turn the AC+fac on. As noted, I don't think I can turn the AC on without the fan, but why would I want to? And the best part... NO REWIRING for heating or cooling!! So far, no bugs to report but it takes maybe 15 seconds for the furnace or AC to kick in when the thermostat triggers. I'm not sure if that was always the case, or if the add-a-wire somehow introduces some minor lag time.

Now for installation. Be SURE that your system is 24VAC. I'm not sure if there are other voltages out there, but if this product works the way I suspect, it would probably fail spectacularly at any non-standard voltage. Tools required are screwdrivers (possibly including a jewelers screwdriver). You need to be able to open you air handler (in my case it's just two thumbscrews on a back panel of the furnace though that did require fighting through some cobwebs and dust). You ALSO need to get behind the thermostat to the wiring (usually the thermostat face plate just comes off). Like I said, you have to install parts at both ends of the wire (duh...). The package comes with 2 wire nuts, which should be enough. Also, be sure you've turned off the furnace power when doing this... again, I'm not sure if 24VAC is really that dangerous but you certainly don't want to find out... The wiring is pretty straightforward from the instructions in the box (see the Venstar website for PDF). If you can't figure it out from the pictures, you probably shouldn't be messing with this. Installation took me an hour, but as I said above I'm really not much of a handyman. It took me 10 minutes to get the thermostat panel off the wall and another 10 minutes just to find the air handler... If I did this again I think I could do the whole thing in 10 minutes total. Make sure you know the wiring color codes, which are readily available on The Google... you don't want someone else to come along and accidentally find out you used yellow for 24VAC power.

So in summary... it worked, it saved me a lot of pain and cost (of running more wire), and it was very easy to install with knowledge gained from The Internets. I suppose you could ding it for being expensive (the actual parts probably cost the company only a few bucks at most) but it was well worth the price to me and there are no alternate products that do this, as far as I know.

This product looks like a really great device it does what it says but requires access to your air exchanger and some technical knowledge that may not be something everyone has or can understand.

this thing works exactly as advertised. The reason I gave it 4 stars I stead of 5 is because I feel the instructions for installation could be better. But a quick google search gave me the info I needed to complete the installation. I would strongly suggest googling for an installation video. There are a couple out there that makes the installation of this a snap. This is a great product that makes conversion to a 5 wire thermostat a snap.

I'm not a wiring guy, and installing the Venstar T5800 thermostat was not in my DIY skills. Wiring is never what the basic instructions say it is. Bought this on the chance that I'd need this, and didn't want to have the contractor come out twice. In this case, I didn't need it, but I'm not sorry. Gave it to the contractor.
