Homebasix LH890S 750/1500-Watt Vertical Quartz Heater Review

This product turned out to work perfectly. It arrived on time and it works as it should. A quartz heater is the only solution for a loft where you need to heat the room rather than all the heat going upstairs!

However, this particular quartz heater (unlike the ones I've had before) is fan-forced, which in my opinion is not as desirable because of the noise issue. It is not noisy as some fan heaters, but I would have preferred the quiet kind, they works just as well. Maybe in my enthusiasm, I didn't check that very carefully...I don't remember seeing 'fan-forced' in the description but I could be wrong.....anyway, that's why I am changing my rating to 4.

A.

I've had this A/C for 2 years now and I LOVE IT. We use it during the summers to cool our large master bedroom which is very poorly insulated and has a huge window that faces west. We actually have two units which we use when temperatures are in the upper 90's to low 100's, one in each side of the large 3-paned sliding window. One is sufficient for temps in the upper 80's to lower 90's two are required if the temp is above 95 outside since all that sun shines right into the window and the insulation of the house is poor. It's nice to know we can be comfortable in our bedroom when the rest of the house is still hot. If I didn't have the units running, my bedroom would easily reach 90+ degrees -this way it stays in the low 70's during the hottest hours of the day.

The unit is easy to install into the window (our windows have screens which prevent the foam from falling backwardswithout a window screen it would surely fall out the foam is a bit of a pain but an optional window kit can be purchased which solves the problem of no screens, etc.-this unit works best with sliding windows); I also use duct tape to hold the foam in place; the unit can be rolled from room to room (it would roll more easily on bare floor than carpeting, but it's not that hard); and I love the features: remote control to change the temperature or turn the unit on/off; timer to control when the unit will shut off automatically; and the pleasant sound it makes. It actually lulls me to sleep at night. I use it as a fan, also, on days when it's not as hot I set the timer and have the fan on with the windows open for a few hours it then shuts off automatically after we've fallen asleep we love that!

To empty the unit I put a shallow dish (a plastic tray) under the spout in the back and empty the water into the tray and then pour that water into a large bowl. It's no big deal and only takes a couple of minutes. I empty the unit every evening during the summer. I tip the unit back a bit to get all the water out. (Don't forget to replace the stopper and cap I failed to do that once and had a huge puddle when I ran the unit the next time). After emptying the water out of the unit, I let the fan run for a couple of hours to dry out the unit and prevent any moldy smells (that's the advice Supentown gave me and it has worked). By-the-way, I find Sunpentown a good business with nice and helpful folks. I've ordered an extra part (window kit) and had excellent customer service.

We can't get central A/C in this house, so this is the best alternative. I've moved this unit into other rooms, too, and I love the flexibility it affords.

This product has been worth every penny to me and I would buy it again.

FOLLOW-UP REVEIW 9 July 2011

The two units I reviewed 3 years ago (above) that I purchased in 2006 are still working great. I have purchased 2 additional units this summer and I love them work great, cool great...I also love Sunpentown customer service. One of the units was damaged in shipping and they sent me another one immediately and paid for the return shipment of the damaged one.

UPDATE 13 June 2013

Still using these units. I no longer use two units in the bedroom now (we no longer sleep in that bedroom in the summer) but downstairs where I only have to use one unit and it doesn't have to work as hard...turns on and off to keep the room cool rather than running constantly when the sun is shining on the windows. I find I don't have to empty it for weeks now, and even then there's not that much to empty. I still love it. It is not a quiet unit like central A/C, so if you want to watch and movie or something in the same room where it's on be prepared to have to turn up the volume.

The other reviewer, Alesia, summed up my experiences to a tee (i.e., abysmal). All I will add is that it does not cool worth a darn. I live in Vancouver, BC not exactly the AZ desert, and it couldn't cool a small with the outside temperature at 85 F if its life depended on it. And it did...trashed it last week.

What a piece of garbage. This is less an air conditioner, and more of a movie prop of what an air conditioner would look like. In fact, I would not dignify it by calling it an air conditioner -just a Thing.

Our contractor bought us these Things. I had a feeling he was angry at us, but now I know. Of the three we have 1 sorta blows air, 1 sorta doesn't and the other doesn't even turn on.

GARBAGE. Do the people at TechniTrend have any shame? In the instruction manual they made sure that every time they wrote "TechniTrend" they wrote it in their stupid ugly font. If only they had taken the time to engineer a working piece of equipment. They should all be ashamed of their work. Everyone: the engineers, the marketing team, the distributors who peddle this trash. Where are you? Who are you? Show yourselves! Defend your work to the public. You cannot? Of course you cannot, your work is a shameful mark on you and your families.

Look, I'm not going to go ahead and say that this is the BEST portable A/C unit on the planet... But I will say it's pretty good for the price. It does a pretty good job of cooling a medium sized room and greatly aids personal comfort. A couple things you should know about this unit are that it is fairly loud (though the white noise helps me sleep) and it does need maintenance. Make sure you clean the air filter and drain the water AT LEAST once a year. If these actions aren't performed, the unit will stop and will not turn on until maintenance is performed. Otherwise, it helps with keeping your room cool :D. I live in a household that has a massive central A/C unit and 3 portable units. You can say I'm a bit of an expert in portable home cooling :p.

We got this unit used from friends who bought it when their main A/C quit in the heat of summer (near Livermore, CA). We got it for use at our modest cabin in the Sierra Nevada near Arnold, CA last year, and it has performed flawlessly. Installation went easily and well, but presented a problem. While we were gone, rodents chewed through the nylon screen and through the foam baffle and entered the house. I had to cut (and paint) a plywood panel with 1/4" mesh screening to prevent this from happening again (as well as replacing the screen with a metal one). The unit cools the interior of the cabin down to 69 degrees from 85, but would get no cooler than that at that ambient temperature (however 69 is more than adequate for us -we were actually just testing the unit to see what it could do). It has been trouble free and works quite well, with the only operational drawback being that it is noisier than we'd like (but we'll put up with some noise to keep cool). Having not compared it to other models, I can't say that it is worth the price of a new one over some other brand/model, but this one works for us just fine.

Bought 2 of these and had same problem with them, steam spurts from the stem and coffee comes out watery as tea. Complained, units replaced, new units do the same thing.

So now we've had 4 of them and all have the same issues, wouldn't bet on this unit again.

I'm sure the product is fine. I bought it to replace the same type and brand. just could not get it to work with my existing gas logs so i simply replaced everything.

I was a little apprehensive about this remote but it has turned out better than I expected. Works much better than the original remote that came with the fireplace logs.

Best Deals on Skytech 1001 TH-A remote control

I would recommend this control / receiver unit to anyone needing a gas-log control system that is more than an "on-off" unit, which is not a good idea in that for a few more bucks one can purchase this unit which offers more than the "on-off" feature which most folks would later find is necessary / desirable.

This item is a complete set of both remote control and fireplace receiver unit. I had a very expensive Skytech 5301 touchscreen which failed (the touchscreen went bonkers) after 2-1/2 years, which I initially planned to replace in kind. However, in searching for the "5301" I found it to be very costly. Upon contacting the store where the unit was purchased and installed, the saleswoman suggested I replace it with the Skytech 1001 TH-A, which cost less than half the price of the "5301" touchscreen.Quite obviously, the Skytech 5301 touchscreen unit has proven problematic based on the recommendation of the saleswoman to replace it with Skytech 1001 TH-A unit.

The vendor promptly sent this unit and thus met or exceeded my expectations. In fact, after receiving the unit and setting it up -which is very simple -I ordered a second unit for the expected failure of a second gas-log unit.

The new remote is simple to use and easily adjusted to match the existing Skytech receiver. The features include simple "on off" buttons, as well as being able to set a temperature at which the unit will shut down once the set temperature is achieved.

This thermstat is outstanding. You can monitor and control the temperature, heat vs cool, and the fan auto vs on from your cell phone from anywhere. Right now there is no monthly charge for this capability.

You must have two-wire 24vac power available at the thermostat location to power the thermostat (R or Rc and a C wire). Most existing thermostats act as a simple switch and only have one hot wire (R or Rc)available. If you don't have the other hot wire "C" available, you will have to run one. The instructions don't tell you the thermostat receives its power through the Rc and C connections--my heating and A/C systems are separate systems, so I had to modify the wiring to get everything to work--it would have been very helpful to know Rc is used for power and not R.

Once I figured out how to make it work for my system, it worked great for three days. Twelve hours after I left on vacation, the thermostat wifi failed. When I got back from vacation, I determined that my home network was working fine and the thermostat wifi was the problem. Honeywell phone support was very good--I did not have to wait to talk to someone and the guy had me reset and try to reconnect it to the network. He quickly determined that I needed to take it back to Lowe's and get a replacement. I had no problem exchanging it at Lowe's and the replacement thermostat has been working great for two weeks now.

The wifi connection goes through a third party website and there is no charge for the service; however, the user agreement states that they can charge for the service in the future. If they start charging, knock off a couple stars.

I purchased a RTH6580WF from Homedepot in Feb. The first problem I had was the wifi disconnecting within a couple of hours. This repeated and the router had to be re-booted to re-establish connection each time. Honeywell tech support was of little help, first telling me I had a weak signal and needed a wireless booster. I have been using wireless devices within 2 feet of that exact spot (and further from the router) for years without any problems. My laptops, iphone, ipad, & smart tv wireless all work fine. Honeywell tech support then said my Linksys wireless router was too old and needed to be replaced with a new router. Because I wanted the thermostat to work, I did replace my Linksys WRT54gs with a new Netgear router and the disconnect problems did go away.

Next problem was the temperature control. After sensing an obvious temperature fluctuation with each furnace cycle, I started checking with a fluke meter/thermocouple module with type K thermocouple, and also verifying with the 20 year old White-Rodgers programmable thermostat I was replacing. The Fluke and the old thermostat always matched within 1 degree. According to those devices, the RTH6580WF always displayed 3 to 5 degrees high. Further, during each furnace cycle, the RTH6580WF would remain steady or possibly show a 1 degree change while the other two always showed a 3 degree change. I had the sensitivity set to the most sensitive for a newer energy efficient house with 90+% efficient furnace which I have. I contacted Honeywell support and was told there was no adjustment or calibration for this. I re-installed my 20 year old White-Rodgers and verified that the actual temperature fluctuation during each furnace cycle was less than 1 degree. At this point, I returned the thermostat and exchanged it for another. The second thermostat was possibly 1 degree better than the first, but still was off by 2 to 4 degrees. I do not consider a 4 to 5 degree temperature error acceptable and I returned the second.

I missed the fine print about possibly being charged for the wireless access in the future. Had I been aware of that, I would have declined the terms and returned the thermostat for that reason alone. Something about not knowing the actual cost of a product when you purchase it does not sit well with me.

My final complaint was that the screen lighting and contrast is rather dim making it more difficult to read compared to the screens on other manufacturers thermostats that are available today (ie White-Rodgers blue screen thermostats). I would have also expected that as long as the RTH6580WF required the common for get the 24vac power that they would have provided an option to have the backlit screen stay on so that you do not have to touch it to turn the light on.

I really like the idea of a wireless thermostat, but it has to control temperature better than the two I tried. I also do not wish to let myself get trapped into having to pay some unknown future cost to use someone's proprietary interface system.

I am NOT even close to the home improvement type. So if things go south I'm in trouble. I looked over the Honeywell box and Honeywell wisely stated your HVAC wiring to the thermostat MUST have a "C wire" or the new thermostat would not receive power and would not function. So being the cautious person I am I asked three wandering separate Home Depot guys "If there was anyway I could "tell" if I had a C wire. The first guy said, "oh if you have AC you have to have a C wire." I continued reading the box and another walked by and asked if I needed help. I asked him the same question. He said, "If your home is new you definitely have one". I then asked #3 and he said, "you should". And then gave me the "you could always return it".

So I took the shot and bought it. I followed the directions carefully. I saw plenty of wires going to the existing thermostat so I assumed I was safe as I saw more than 4. I disconnected the old thermostat and began to affix Honeywell's supplied wire stickers -with a lot of different letters in the alphabet that matched all the letters on the existing and figured I was safe and this would be a simple "swap out". Well guess what? My new, state of the art home had everything but a C wire. Nervousness sets in. I rip through the quick setup guide and read about "alternative wiring options for those without C wires. It was a very nicely done YouTube video that tells me I will have to use the "G" wire in place of the missing "C" wire. And by doing that I would lose the ability to only run the fan manually. No biggie. Then the video sends me down to the furnace to do the same G to C move on the main panel and then jump the "Y" to "C" with an 18 gauge wire. Yeah I have tons of those laying around my house. Now panic begins to set in. Putting the old thermostat back or worse having no heat in Northern Utah over night in end of Winter or worse, having to call an H VAC guy on a Sunday for "after hours" home service that "costs the same" while I listened to a lecture about not being trained to do this and getting a $300.00 bill did not appeal to me. To finish this long story my neighbor is an electrician. He speaks mostly Spanish but after reading the Spanish enclosed instructions and watching the YouTube video like 4 time he got it to work.

Otherwise an excellent WiFi thermostat system -which I can do and fully understand. It will help a good deal while I am traveling. I am an empty nester. So word from the now wiser, if you aren't comfortable with this stuff leave it to those that are.

Honest reviews on Honeywell RTH6580WF Wi-Fi 7 Day Programmable Thermostat, White

I picked up this thermostat at Lowes. I had expected to pay $150 for Honeywell's touchscreen wifi thermostat or as much as $180 for last year's nest. I was pleasantly surprised to see a wifi thermostat option for around $120.

I got the thing home, took down my old thermostat (which had 4 wires R, G, Y and W) and installed this one. I turned my furnace back on and... nothing. It turns out I didn't have a "c" wire. There were 6 wires coming from the furnace but only 4 of them were used. I removed the cover from my furnace and took a look. Sure enough there was a "C" spot with nothing hooked up to it so I stripped the (unused) blue wire going to my thermostat and connected it to "C", then went back upstairs and hooked up blue to "C". I turned on the furnace and the thermostat woke up. I thought I was done. I was wrong.

I now had to connect to an adhoc network called "new_thermostat_somethingorother" and the only way to force my iPhone to believe it was the real internet was to go into airplane mode before choosing it. I got to the wifi setup page, picked my home wifi ssid and entered my password. I thought I was done. I was wrong.

I went to honeywell's web site, created an account, entered my thermostat's mac address and checksum. I then got a very nice user interface for entering on times and off times. I was impressed. I thought I was done. I was wrong. The thermostat had to download a software update. I grow sick of buying stuff new and the first thing it has to do when it gets on the internet is send me away for up to half an hour while it updates its firmware. When the firmware update was over I thought I was done. I was wrong.

It turns out that in my haste to get this thing on the 'net, I skipped setting the date and apparently it doesn't figure out what day it is over the INTERNET?!? When I turned on the heat, based on the time of day it went to 62 degrees. But it's Saturday, not Monday right? So I called Honeywell tech support and they had me hold UP and FAN for 30 seconds to get into a diagnostic mode. I then had to scroll to page 39 and change the one to a zero (to delete wifi settings). I could now get to a screen to verify my thermostat knew what day it was. Whew. Now I had to go back and program the wifi settings one last time. This was dumb. Just plain dumb. Hopefully Honeywell fixes this in a future software update to allow date and time to be set through the web interface or make it simpler to set on the thermostat without having to forget wifi settings. Dumb.

This was painful. Painful, but mercifully brief. So why do I give this thing 5 stars? Because it works and works well. I don't mind an extra half hour or so of monkeying around and I'm pretty sure I'd have almost as much monkeying around if I paid twice as much for a Nest. Since my thermostat lives in a corner behind a grandfather clock, I cannot believe the nest can "just figure out" when I'm home and I'd rather have a wifi-ready, plain and simple, non-touchscreen thermostat than a Nest, because the Honeywell web site is well laid out and easy to use and there is an iOS app that allows me to get in and change settings from anywhere. Another plus for this thermostat is its shape, I don't have the paint I used in the living room and a small round Nest is going to leave an ugly white square where my old Honeywell manual thermostat used to be for people to see when they walk by the grandfather clock. In short if I bought the Nest, I had to spend up to twice as much AND worrying about matching a paint color from 10 years ago.

I think Honeywell is on the right track with this thing only I say go a little further. Honeywell needs to come up with an even more manual-looking thermostat with only 3 buttons on the thing and have ALL the programming done via wifi. I kept stumbling into programming screens when I was looking for a way to find out what day this thing thought it was. The user interface for this thermostat is just awful. The user interface on the web is great. So why not scrap those extra 4 buttons and give us nothing but up/down and hold? Let us handle the rest over the air. I already own a wonderful touchscreen. It's called an iPhone. I don't need another expensive touchscreen attached to my living room wall.

I am really pleased with the function of this thermostat, but there were a few problems that had to be worked through before it functioned perfectly.

First, you need to know if you have a "c wire." Before buying a new thermostat, you should remove your old thermostat and inspect your wires to see if you have a "c wire." Our old thermostat did not use a c wire, but there was an unused wire wrapped around the wire bundle. We unwrapped the wire and labeled it "c" as stated in the alternate wiring video on the Honeywell website. Our heating and cooling system's terminal block already had a wire in the "c" position, so we just added the new c wire so that both wires were connected and it has worked fine.

Second, check the security settings on your wireless router. This thermostat does not function properly with mixed security mode (WPA/WPA2). If you experience intermittent connectivity problems, switch to WPA2-only mode.

When we purchased the thermostat we were using a router that used WEP security, and we had no problems using the thermostat's wifi. About three weeks after we bought it we changed internet service. To change the settings on the thermostat, you have to press up and fan for three seconds to get into the menu. Then you have to go to setting 39 and change it to 0 in order to set up the new wifi. Be careful in the menu settings. While trying to deal with the intermittent wifi issues, I accidentally changed the system type to Heat Pump. That caused the heater to come on at the same time as the AC and then a fuse blew on the circuit board. So we didn't have AC for a day. In July. In Texas. Honeywell does not make the menus user friendly, so make sure you are looking at your user manual and you have all of the numbers set correctly anytime you access the menus.

Once we set up the wifi for the new router, it worked for several hours, but then it would no longer connect with our PC or iphone app. This went on for several days. It would lose connectivity, then I would enter the menus to turn off wifi and then turn it on again to get it to connect to the internet. A few hours later the wifi would disconnect again. Then I called Honeywell. As I was explaining the problem, I was trying to explain what solutions I had already tried, when "Daniel" interrupted me with "NO NO NO, don't do that." It was apparent that he did not understand what solutions actually work (at least temporarily) with this problem. I told him that I had already tried the solution he offered several times. Then he told me that the problem was my new router. He said I should replace it. The router works perfectly with 12 other wireless devices. I was sure he was wrong. He was. I then googled "intermittent connectivity wifi thermostat." I got a hit on the Nest website. Here's what Nest says, "In some rare cases, Nest can experience intermittent Wi-Fi connectivity if the security on your Wi-Fi router is set to a mixed security mode (WPA/WPA2). Refer to your Wi-Fi router documentation to learn how to update your security to WPA2-only mode. Once the security has been updated on your Wi-Fi router, reconnect Nest to your home network." Nest was spot on. I changed to WPA2-only mode on my router and my thermostat has worked perfectly ever since. Honeywell doesn't know the solution to this problem, but Nest does.

After finding solutions to the problems I encountered I am overall pleased with thermostat. It is far less expensive than the Nest, but I'm sure Nest must have better customer service. I hope you learn from my mistakes and don't experience the same issues.

After almost 15 years of using my old sandwich grill, decided to buy a new one. Expected thenproduct would be moving up in quality and better performance but sadly was disappointed in both aspects. The sandwiches are not browned or crispy, come out rather flat. The metal in the grill and the clasp to bring in the grill together are both of poor quality and feel flimsy.

Lastly, the product looked used when delivered and not sure if it was a returned item that was shipped again. Not a good buy!

For the price, it is a great little fountain. We previously had a much larger one, but the problem was it took over 5 pounds of chocolate just to keep it going. This one is so easy to use and takes about 2 pounds.

If you need more it is very easy to quickly add more chocolate. It's a good buy but don't expect it to be large. It does the job for small parties.

Bought the machine with hopes of using it for two weddings. Luckily, used it first for my granddaughter's baptism. The machine was noisy, but worked so-so. Several weeks later, decided that we needed to try it again before the weddings. Even noisier and then quit working completely. Threw it in the trash and ordered a different machine from a different company.

Bought this for a baby shower I was hosting for my sister. It was a little noisy, but that was ok, didn't expect much for the price. It worked fine for the shower except the heater didn't seem to get as hot as needed to keep the chocolate a smooth consistancy. I pre-heated the chocolate and it flowed beautifully and worked great. After about an hour into the party the chocolate seemed to start cooling down and getting thicker. Had to stop it and return the chocolate to the microwave to heat again. This worked fine for the remainder of the shower.

After being in storage for a few more months, I took it to a banquet for my daughters cheerleading team. Soon as I started setting it up on the table one of the other parents told me she had bought one exactly like mine but hers had only lasted until the second use. Jokingly I told her this was the second time I had used mine so we would see if mine was junk too, well guess what? the same thing again, after about 30 minutes I had to reheat the chocolate to get it smooth enough to flow properly (even added more oil to thin it out), after being on and running for about an hour the motor quit, just completely died!!!! The heater was still on, the light was still on, you could even feel the motor trying to turn the auger, but nothing!!! Turned it off for a while to see if it was just overheated and let it cool down but when I tried turning it back on... Nothing! It's not a purchase I expected to last forever, but I sure didn't expect it to be junk. (And of course it's past the 90 day warranty) I just suggest if you intend to buy this brand you may want to run it every few weeks just to make sure it's going to last before the warranty expires. According to these reviews and previous owners comments, this brand only last for a couple uses.

September 2010I need to update my previous review. All the information I wrote in this review is correct, but after complaing so much to my husband about what happend to this fountain, he took a few things apart, took pliars and manually turned the thing that the spiral sits on to raise the chocolate to the top and now it's working again. I havn't used it yet for a party so I'm not really sure how long it will work again, but for now it's working.

Honest reviews on Total Chef TCCSF-02 Stainless Steel 2-Tier Chocolate Fountain

This chocolate fountain machine does not work at all. I tried multiple times to get this machine to work with different types of chocolate and the motor will never turn the chocolate and not get warm enough. It put a little damper on my new years party. I bought this last year and I have used it twice. It is very loud! I had to turn it off at one party because it was just too loud to have going. Also it is hard to get it to sheet the right way, you have to keep adjusting the legs to get it even enough to pour down right.

I purchased this unit to replace an old rotary-style thermostat. This works very well with our central-air system. Setup allows you two programs: M-F and Sat-Sun

For each program, you can specify Four Temperatures and their respective times:

1. Temp at wakeup (wake)

2. Temp during the day (leave)

3. Temp in evening (return)

4. Temp for overnight (sleep)

This was fairly easy to install as a replacement for our old unitfasten wall plate onto wall, insert wire leads into well labeled connectors, insert included backup battery, snap main unit into wall plate, viola!

After changing the batteries on the unit, the unit stopped working correctly . After trouble shooting on my own and reading up online, it was very clear it was the motherboard. I called honeywell, and they said the installing plumbing contractor would have to be called ( 80$ service call NOT to be covered under the 5 year warranty) in order for the licensed contractor who originally purchased the unit would have to be the one to file a claim. What if they are no longer in business! I told them I would happily pay for the replacement cost, but they said they could do nothing without the contractor calling and the contractor can't call unless they come out for a 80$ service call. Now that I know this "racket" , I would like everyone to know to ask their heating contractor to put in a "non-professional" thermostat that can be purchased at home depot , lowes , etc. That way i can serviced by you without the expensive service calls. I think Honeywell could have given me a chance to just get a new faceplate. They were unfriendly about it as well. Stay away from any models that start in TH and go for the PTH and save a lot of time and money.

I bought this to replace a previous Honeywell thermostat:

that went flaky on me after about 4 years.

I was initially reluctant to buy another Honeywell, but after reading reviews decided that maybe this was the best choice for me. The convincing factor for me is that this is from the "Pro" line, so it comes with a 5 year warranty. Although I have no clue if that means that it's built any better or with any better quality components or not.

I'm not really sure what makes it a "Pro". They don't actually intend for it to be sold to anyone but contractors, which is somewhat absurd imho. There are a lot of settings that I don't necessarily care about, and going through them requires a somewhat non-intuitive setup phase (that you probably won't be able to figure out without a manual). So maybe that's the reason. But once you have it set up, the basic operation (including changing program values) is reasonable simple and intuitive and just like any other programmable digital thermostat that I've used.

I was a bit wary of the AIR (Adaptive Intelligent Recovery) feature, where the thermostat doesn't turn on when you set it, but instead tries to predict when it ought to turn on to be at the selected temperature at the selected time. Sounds like something that sounds great in theory, but might be flaky in practice. Esp. since one of the reviewers complained about it, as well as getting no help from customer service in trying to disable the feature. I decided that I was only going to buy the thermostat if this could be disabled. But the owner's manual gave no info about how to do that.

So I called customer service. I got a reasonably helpful person who was not an idiot and could speak English. (And when I asked a question he didn't know the answer to, he didn't just make something up -he put me on hold and found someone else that knew the answer.) Anyway, the bottom line is that yes you *can* disable this. While the owner's manual doesn't cover this, the installation guide does. While these both come with the thermostat, they are also both available online. The owner's manual is here:

Fwiw, selection 0 in setup function 13 turns AIR off.

I can't speak to how well the AIR does or does not work, since I just disabled it during setup.

So far it seems to work, although I don't really have too many things I'm looking for in a thermostat. (Although it does improve upon my previous model in various respects, like having a backlight, and having a more informative display, and not requiring removing the panel to program it, and actually doing the right thing when you set a temporary temperature by keeping that valid until the next program change.)

I do have a few minor complaints about the physical design. I would like to see a few more holes in the backing plastic piece to give you some more options wrt where to mount the thermostat and where to run the wires. I had a few constraints relative to my existing installation, so I ended up using the existing left mount hole as is; ignoring the hole for running the wires; using the right mount hole for running the wires; and drilling a new hole for the second mount hole. Not a huge deal, but I could understand if some people would be nervous about drilling into the plastic. Also, I was able to run my wires through the small mount hole b/c I only have a 2 wire system. For a more complicated system, that might not have worked and I might have had to drill a larger hole.

Also, it's a bit of an effort to remove the main unit from the base, which is necessary to change the batteries. I'm nervous that that will put excessive stress where the unit is mounted into the plaster. I guess I'll just have to try to be as gentle as possible.

Honest reviews on Honeywell TH4110D1007 Programmable Thermostat

The value is excellent, and it's fairly easy to install. We have one of these for our upstairs unit and it works well. Configuration is intuitive and the backlight automatically turns off after a fairly short timer. It allows 4 time slots for M-F and 4 time slots for S-S. This does not auto-switch between heat and cool, but otherwise, its' great.

The "Adaptive Intelligent Recovery" is kind of annoying. To turn it off, hold both up and down arrows to go into config mode. Cursor UP to get to function 13, and cursor DOWN to change it to ZERO for off. Then hold both buttons again to exit and save.

This unit uses a couple of AA batteries, or it can use the C (common) line from your AC's transformer. Batteries last 9-12 months in this.

The manual is decent, but this version forgets to have you label the old thermostat wires before you disconnect the old thermostat. This model isn't directly listed anymore, and seems to be replaced by RTH4300B; however, Honeywell still has its manuals online. I'm not sure if Amazon will scrub URLs or not, so here they are expanded and linky:

Review of Friedrich Kuhl SS10M10 Window and Thru-Wall 9500 BTU Commercial

Friedrich Kuhl SS10M10 Window and Thru-Wall 9500 BTU Commercial Grade Air Conditioner
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

There are two similar units that Friedrich introduced this year-see the review for the SS12M10 done by "obmot" and the review for the SS08M10 by "dub". Both of these reviews are detailed and reflect my personal experiences with the SS10M10. Now here is what I have to say: I bought two of these. One came with the compressor ripped off the mounts and had to be returned. The packing experts at Friedrich decided to skimp on the protection for shipping. Whoever was responsible for this packing problem may be unemployed. Judging by the few reviews that I have read the problem is persistent and will probably be corrected so Friedrich doesn't have to deal with so many returns. Because the A/Cs are very heavy and packed in a huge box returning the unit was not fun. I had to take the old unit in a taxi and it barely fit (even though I used a smaller box). One of the batteries that operates the controls died after two weeks; Friedrich was very nice and sent me a replacement for free and a back up for the non-dead unit. The unit is large and heavy for 10,000 BTUs but this can be considered a "good thing" in that the air throw is superior to smaller units and I intend to leave these monsters in my NYC apartment "forever". Also, the unit is very nice looking. The fan cycles on and off too much on auto. A steady noise is less distracting to me then an intermittent one. I switched to "continuous" mode and probably pay a few extra dollars in electricity. Both units cool very well and the EER is excellent. Both units are noisier than one would expect. You may have to shove additional foam to seal noise that leaks from the cracks in between the unit and chassis. While this is really no big deal, most people may not pay attention to this need and would expect such an expensive unit to have the noise better controlled by design and not by consumer intervention. One unit had a rattle problem with the plastic air vents. I solved it by damping the vent with a two small rubber pads that I had to stick in between the vents. The controls are good and extensive programming is possible-more than a normal person would ever need. The ability to shut out the display light is nice. The ability to dim the display to 20% is a good feature but not properly implemented because when the unit changes its cooling mode (automatically) the display brightens to full--try sleeping with the flickering between dim and full in a dark room-not very user friendly. I hope Friedrich learns from these new consumer reviews and improves the units as they are very handsome and have, for the most part, good build quality.

I installed this thermostat to replace my Honeywell 5-1-1 RTH230B because I wanted a bit more flexibility in scheduling my Asleep and Home times.

This was super easy to install on my two wire system. Less than 5 minutes to get it up on the wall. A nice feature is that once the back plate is connected and mounted, you can just pull the thermostat off the back plate and sit in your easy chair to program. I also like the fact that the display is illuminated so you can see what's going on in the dark. I also like the look of the thermostat, grey face with white border, and soft blue illumination.

I initially set the following program based on my schedule-waking up each weekday at 6:30 AM and going to bed around 10 PM. On Friday's I generally go to bed around 11 PM. On the weekends, I generally get up around 8:30 AM and go to bed around 11 PM, except on Sunday night when I go to bed around 10 PM. Here's how I programmed that schedule into the thermostat:

Mon-Thu Asleep 9:30 PM to 6 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 8 AM to 5 PM, 69 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F (done by setting up Monday and copying to Tue through Thu, which was a nice feature). There are no times to set for the Home period, the thermostat calculates that automatically for you, you just set the desired temp.

Fri Asleep 10:30 PM to 8:30 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 8 AM to 5 PM, 69 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

Sat Asleep 10:30 PM to 8:30 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM, 71 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

Sun Asleep 9:30 PM to 6 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 8:30 AM t0 9:30 PM, 71 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

On Friday I discovered (at 1:45 PM) the thermostat was indicating Home instead of Away. So I called tech support. They had the same thermostat in front of them and got the same result. If I set Friday to match the Mon-Thu schedule, the thermostat then indicated Away at 1:45 PM as it should.

They're supposed to get back to me but this is what I figured out. 6 AM is some kind of demarcation line in the thermostat's programming. If you cross that line you get "overlap" (that's what tech support called it) and the thermostat puts the system into Home mode instead of Away. I even tried a factory reset (holding down the + and buttons for more than five seconds). The internal default programming uses 6 AM for every Asleep program.

I'm frustrated that I don't have real control over the programming but for < than $30.00 I guess I can't expect "real" control.

Laying in bed last night I had a vision. As long as I don't cross the 6 AM line with my Asleep times, it should function as I want to. Just have to be a bit creative with the programming.

Here's my current schedule:

Mon-Thu Asleep 9:30 PM to 6 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 8 AM to 5 PM, 69 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

Fri Asleep 10:30 PM to 6 AM, 69 Def F. Away 8 AM to 5 PM, 69 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

Sat Asleep 10:30 PM to 6 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 6 AM to 8:30 AM, 69 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

Sun Asleep 9:30 PM to 6 AM, 69 Deg F. Away 6 AM to 8:30 AM, 69 Deg F. Home 71 Deg F.

By doing that yesterday, at 2 PM Friday the thermostat indicated Away (like it should). I've been monitoring it today (Saturday) and so far so good. It's showing the correct mode and temp for the time of day.

I think I've won but I'll have to monitor each mode throughout the week to be sure. I firmly believe that if you don't cross the 6 AM demarcation with your Asleep times and set short Away times during the weekend, this thermostat will perform as expected. 5 stars for value and ease of mounting, 3 stars for programming. Overall 4 stars in my opinion. If tech support provides a magic answer I'll update this review and overall rating.

Exactly what we needed. We wanted the heat to turn down Monday through Thursday because who goes to bed on Friday night the same time as Thursday night? Saturday and Sunday are different too. So this allows scheduling every day independently. Perfect!

So many people badmouthing the wonderful Taylor 1528 unit I though I'd chime in and let everybody know that they've addressed most of the complaints.

First of all, there seems to be a new version of the 1528 with a different display layout. They should've probably assigned it a different model number but fact of the matter is that they didn't. If you look in in the 1528's user manual at Taylor's website then you'll see how it looks like now. It's easy to recognize though because the newer version has a little map icon of the States and the older version didn't have that. The version number for my unit located on a label on top of the unit states "1528 1010 V0270". So let's get to the list:

The very dim backlight and the unreadable display issues that many have complained about are totally fixed. The backlight is super-bright blue-purple and the display is so contrasty you can even see phantom shades in numbers and graphics.

The reception issue is gone, I've tried going with the unit behind two solid brick/concrete walls and checking if the remote sensor still works, and yes, it works great and the reception is very solid.

You don't need any special cable to connect the base unit to the remote sensor, it's as easy as flipping a channel switch on the remote and pressing a button on the main unit to pair them. Anyhow, if you do need to connect a cable for whatever reason, there's no need to order one from Taylor as the plug is pretty standard so you can even do a cable yourself from a couple of old unused wall chargers. But again, there's no need.

I couldn't test the atomic clock functionality and both units run on lithium batteries (non-rechargeable). Don't know if that matters.

Now for the dislikes I don't like the new layout on the display and the graphics as much as the older version. The new one looks slightly less modern and busy. The inclusion of the map is a dubious choice, it serves no real purpose but sort of ties the unit to one place in the world which is unfortunate.

It still got tiny screws on the remote unit but I didn't find that a problem.

That's about all, apart from what I've said and a little ambiguity regarding the meters/feet above see you have to set when setting up the barometer I'm totally satisfied with the unit. So I'd urge everyone to give it a chance provided you get a new version.

Disclaimer: I had to buy this unit elsewhere because Amazon wouldn't ship it to my place.

Got the station yesterday will return it today for full refund. As previously noted by other users the display is barely readable regardless of whether you use batteries or the provided AC adapter. Too bad as the info displayed are nicely arranged. But what good does it make if you can't read them.

When I recived the TAYLOR weather station, it had no remote probe wire. I tried to call twice and both times got switched to an answering device: Left a message and no one calls back. I also completed the email contact on the web site: no one emails back. DON'T buy from Taylor, the products aren't great (see other reviews) and the customer service can be described thus: THEY JUST IGNORE YOU!

Honest reviews on Taylor 1528 Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Weather Station

I received Model 1528 as a Christmas gift. It is next to impossible to read the very faint displays either using the ac adapter or batteries; I can't get the atomic clock signal on this product and I have placed the base station in numerous places throughout my home and waited up to 24 hours several times, before trying a new location in my home; so far no tech support from Taylor Precision Products customer service regarding a solution. Suggest one consider some other product from some other manufacture.

I was thrown off a bit by the description. I thought this item had a larger display than it does. Also, the LCD display isn't very crisp -kinda gray, actually.
